Zweihander is a Colossal Sword in Elden Ring. The Zweihander scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity, and is a versatile Weapon for heavy-weight combat. This weapon, the lightest of all colossal swords, is able to set a devastating tempo for an encounter through its flexible moveset. 

 

Just about the largest sword a mere man is capable of swinging. True to its name, it is designed to be wielded in both hands, but those of merely ordinary strength will still struggle to do so.

The long blade is heavy and sharp, sending foes reeling back with its broader strokes, while also capable of a devastating piercing thrust.

          This thing is the nichest of niche. Its moveset and range is awesome so it's really fun to use, but man it's so easily beaten out by other options as far as power goes at almost every turn that you really gotta wonder how much that R2 poke is really worth.
          The Greatsword is about better at almost everything. On my build by, only reshuffling offensive stats to meet usage and weight requirements while keeping VIG at 60 and staying within RL125, the only thing I've found this thing out-damages the Greatsword in is with Keen infusion. In Keen the Zwei can outdo the Greatsword, but a 2-handed Heavy Zwei out-damages a 2-handed Keen Zwei and then a Heavy Greatsword out-damages a Heavy Zwei and we're back to square 1. Only way Keen is worth it is if you (ironically given its name) one hand it and run an offstoc with it; its weight allows you to do that pretty comfortably and that gives you a lot of fun options to play with. That said again tho, a Lightning infusion is directly better than a Keen infusion for that as well, higher AR and the split-damage is beneficial given the generally poor Lightning resistance in PvP, and once again, you're back to just running a Lightning infused Greatsword instead. Really really gotta decide if that poke is worth it.

          Only other niche I can think of for it is a Magic infusion on an INT spellblade build. Its light weight compared to Greatsword and Royal means you can run a strong staff with high INT without worrying about neutering your magic damage. The real competition to this now becomes the Iron Greatsword one class below it which on Magic infusion also outdoes the Zwei (oof), but the Zwei does have the advantage of how it plays just by nature of being a colossal, people like keeping their distance against colossals more than other weapons which you can punish with your magic, then poke or pancake em when they're forced to get in close (runs well with Gravitas too to catch them when they're in your space and abuse its range to hit em on the panic roll).
          That's it. That's the only super niche I can imagine it actually excelling at over its other options. Everything else is literally just a game of poke vs power. I really wish it got a little higher AR, just a little bit, that wouldn't have ruined the exploration encouragement they set up for PvE but still would let you run this awesome weapon with its awesome moveset without lingering doubts. B scaling with Dex in Lightning infusion would've been super appreciated too...

            Its sad how much this pales in comparison to the Dark Souls Zweihander, sure it's got low requirements for a colossal sword, is the only one that pokes other than the mediocre Troll Knight Sword, and is the lightest one, but it hits like a rolled up newspaper compared to the other colossal swords unless you're not a strength build or you just love it with all of your heart, it's not bad, but not good either, the only majorly good thing about it is that it has low requirements for it's class, otherwise you might as well ditch it for almost any other colossal sword one you have the minimum requirements for them, its really just a sad shadow compared to the og.

              Charged R2 thrusts of this is more than enough to compensate for the lack of AR, this thing ridicules people in pvp, mocks their grandma, makes fun of their dog, takes their lunch money, it leaves them in shambles.

                  how to bm sweaties in pvp: get a +0 zweihander, poison infuse it with some worthless ash like kick, crouch poke spam your heart out until they give up or alt+f4

                  • Damage wise it's probably best to use this fire or lightning infused on dedicated dex or strength builds. Gets close to or slightly over 800 once you approach 80. Problem is it still gets out-damaged pretty heavily by anything other weapon in its class. Quality infused on a 55/55 build, its two handed AR is equal to the one handed AR of the Greatsword, and you see how that becomes problematic for long term physical viability. So the real use of this is magic infused on an intelligence build. The relatively low requirements mean that it's easier for a pure 80 int build to use this as opposed to any other colossal sword, and it provides a relatively good amount of damage while allowing you access to a weapon class normally out of range for that build. 780 AR for a minimum requirement 80 int magic Zwihander. Not game breaking, but it lets you use that sick moveset without heavy physical investment other colossal sword demand. Likely still better off investing in the points needed for the Royal Greatsword at that point though, 884 at minimum requirements and 60 int (lower int to compensate for the extra physical investment). So... man I wish this was slightly closer in damage to other colossal swords. The moveset and visuals are fantastic, it's just so majorly outclassed in terms of damage on pretty much any build. If it was just a bit higher in damage the moveset would make up for the damage difference.

                      this thing seriously needs a damage boost.... it gets outclassed by almost every greatsword for christ's sake. on some builds the AR between a claymore and zwei are little to nothing, but even in the builds where the zwei beats the claymore in terms of AR, it still get outclassed bc its heavier, slower, and requires more stat investment to wield, also the claymore a better thrust R2, and a follow up thrust after it.
                      i really wish i could use this on a cold or int build to put waves of darkness on it, but i just cant justify it.

                        I don't get it. Is this thing better with STR or DEX? And If I want a hybrid with lets say INT is STR/INT better or DEX/INT?

                          Flame infusion to be Giantdad certified. Basically removes scaling but has the highest base damage. Same thing as chaos.

                            A lot of comments on here saying that the Zwei scales better with Dex. This is only true if you are one-handing it. When two-handing, the Zwei will get better damage from Heavy/Fire as opposed to Keen/Lightning all the way to 80 in their respective stats.

                              Its stats are kinda meh compared to other colossal swords, but it can be acquired very early pretty easily, it has a long range thrust for a heavy attack, it's the lightest of all colossal swords, and its viable for most builds since its one of the only colossal swords that isn't strictly strength scaling, it's hardly broken but its low requirements, light weight for a colossal sword and high poise damage make up for the fact that its not that damaging compared to to others in it's weapon class in my opinion.

                                At 60 STR, my +24 Heavy Zweihander does 698 damage. Meanwhile, my +20 Heavy Greatsword is at 720. 4 upgrades higher and still less damage. How can people not see a problem here? Thrust or no thrust this thing needs a damage boost.

                                  So I was doing some testing against crescent moon axe un-upgraded. The AR on the axe when infused as actually higher than Zwei, but the damage on mobs was 10-20pc higher on Zwei. So basically it punches above it's actual AR.

                                        I love this weapon. It's the only ultragreatsword that can reasonably be acquired and used before you even fight your first boss both in terms of finding it and in terms of leveling. It's strength requirement is low enough that you can use it long before any other weapon in it's class even without putting all your points into strength, and it hits way harder than anything else you can get or use for a good long while.

                                        It's not the best greatsword in the game, but for how easily it can be acquired I'd forgive a lot worse than somewhat lackluster stats.

                                                    This sword is a must-have for any build. Dex? Yeah. Str? Oh my goodness yes. Heck, I did a Fai build and still used this bad boy more than my actual magic just because I felt more comfortable with it. ------ Also, does the spike on the sword look like it pierces the player's shoulder instead of being used as a resting place?

                                                      This is, in my humble opinion, the best colossal weapon in the game. During my 1s playthrough i keep going back and forth between different weapons and the Zwei for my STR build. It has everything: Good damage, good build flexibility, long reach, high poise damage , excellent move set (The R2 and the crouch/roll R1s are amazing), low weight and low stat requirements. I have tried so many weapons.... great mace, nightrider glaive, great sword, crescent moon axe and many more and none of them feel as complete as the Zwei. What an amazing weapon.

                                                        Imagine this weapon with the Godslayer Greatsword moveset (which more closely resembles how actual zweihander combat works) and a critical attack where the Tarnished half-swords the blade by grabbing the ricasso in their off hand and thrusting it into their opponent. That would take this sword from 10/10 to 11/10.

                                                            I wonder what it'd be like if this had like 110 crit or something.

                                                            Meaning the choices for similar infusable weapons would be Guts Sword for raw damage, Claymore for speed and then Zwei being the refined gentleman's choice that capitalizes on parries + poise/guard breaks.

                                                            Could even give it a unique crit animation, leaning into its R2 thrusts. Where instead of swinging it like a baseball bat, you instead run your target through, then kick them off the blade as you pull it out.

                                                                    the low requirements, the near perfect moveset and the colossal poise dmg with well range make the zweihänder viable in every build.
                                                                    in pve the running attack with two hyper-armored follow up attacks wastes most groups of enemies, thee will never be afraid of engaging and traiding with trash mobs.
                                                                    for smaller enemies and huge ones it is recommended to aim thy attacks freely to overcome hitbox issues.
                                                                    in pvp this fair sword is very versatile, not only the fast crouch-poke, the chargeable heavy-poke adds delayed suffering to hosts experience.
                                                                    the swings are fast but slow enough to catch rolling rams during their breaks very well.
                                                                    to inflict serious poise dmg, try jumping, or a more tried jump with lions claw.
                                                                    if this isnt enough, grab a second one for more broken AoW moves that most bosses will take on a twitter-rant to nerf the strength scaling on this weapon even more.

                                                                    are thee scared of banished knights? is one enemy at a time thy limit? thee cant fulfill your accord with thy foolish stat spread?

                                                                      The damage type description is a bit confusing, but from some testing, I am quite sure that the Zweihander deals indeed pierce damage on its thrusting attacks and standard damage on the swings.

                                                                      Its AR is barely higher than the Claymore, but due to the higher motion value of two-handed colossal swords since patch 1.04, it deals quite a bit more damage.

                                                                        Running this 2H with 70STR at +24. Using Spear talisman for thrusting counter attacks, axe talisman for charged attacks, the cracked tear for charged attacks, golden vow, flame grant me strength and royal knights resolve. Every punish window I can get a charged R2 off I do 3.5k damage in one swing which is a lot given how quickly I can put RNR up. I nearly one shot the Red wolf of radogon on NG+ with this.

                                                                        The punish on rolling r1s and crouch r1s is insane too, I get 1.5x the normal damage with the spear talisman on. Hitting 2.2k with RNR on.

                                                                            The R2 poke is the only reason I would ever consider taking this over the Guts Greatsword. Both are fun and have their uses though. I love both with Lion's Claw for PvP and PvE. Guts Greatsword probably better for PvE though imo.

                                                                                The zweihander is one of only two colossal swords that come with r2 pokes. The other is the troll knight's greatsword, but that one cannot be infused or have the AoW swapped out, and furthermore has an int requirement.

                                                                                Charged r2 pokes benefit from the bonus counter damage on thrust attacks, which can be further bolstered by the spear talisman. Slap on Royal Knight's Resolve, stack on other body/aura buffs, and get ready for some true big boy damage.

                                                                                For the true artisan, put on Flaming Strike, a Glintstone crown of your choice, the tree sentinel set, and uphold the tale of the legend himself.

                                                                                    Its still a pretty great weapon even if it doesn't look as strong on paper. The lower weight makes it easier to put something like the sacrifical axe on your offhand to fuel your weapon art (for pve) and lets you put less points in to END to keep your level down in pvp. Same length as the greatsword, but with the much more useful poke r2. Use with lion's claw in pve (take advantage of the length) and quick step in pvp (quickstep into R2s) - because other CGS will be crouch poking the effective damage on this will be about the same as those due to R2s having a much higher damage multiplier (I think crouch pokes are actually weaker than R1s?)

                                                                                      I will add that IMO this weapon is fairly lackluster on horse back. Yes, you have a charged attack that drags on the ground n can launch enemies but it's normal attack is this slow downward swing with no combo or follow up, just the same slow swing n recovery time.

                                                                                          In Demon's Souls DS1 & 3, the Zweihänder weighs 10 units. DS2 of course being the odd one, having it weigh 12 units in that game.

                                                                                          Here, the friggin' thing weighs 15.5 units. It's almost 60% heavier than its DS counterpart, and I don't know of any weapon that has received this big of a nerf. It's completely nonsensical too, I've never heard of the Zweihänder as this sort of broken, overpowered weapon that needed to be toned down nor is the irl weapon known for being exceedingly heavy, quite the opposite!

                                                                                          You could argue that it's because the average weight of Colossal Swords is higher than in Dark Souls, but it's almost the same as in DS2, with every other title in the series having a higher weight cap. It makes 0 sense for it to be this heavy in this game is what I'm saying.

                                                                                          Its low weight and ease of access is usually THE big selling point of the weapon. But you're only 2-3 units away from the next options, which really isn't that big of a deal given the immense starting weight.

                                                                                          I'm fine with this being the weakest Colossal Sword, damage was never its selling point. I'm not fine with a weapon that weighs almost as much as a friggin' Black Knight Greatsword to be this weak in comparison to every other option, however.

                                                                                            For all the people who think that the Zweihander is the weakest among all Colossal Weapon in Elden Ring. It is simply not.
                                                                                            The Zweihander has several advantages over their alternatives, because
                                                                                            - it has the best Moveset (including a poke R2, which the Greatsword doesn't have)
                                                                                            - it has the best Damage to Weight ratio (even with a B scaling)
                                                                                            - it gives you the access to use every AoW on it (e.g. Storm Stomp into R2 poke, Giant Hunt to roll catch, Quickstep into poke attack etc.)
                                                                                            - it has the fastest recovery time after every swing
                                                                                            - it grants you faster Hyperarmor, because it has fewer initial startup attack frames
                                                                                            - (it is and looks like a real sword without some fantasy/anime reference)

                                                                                              Since I discovered this weapon, I just can't use something else. Even for PVP. It sure lacks a bit of power but you can still invest a bit in faith or use some goodies to make it hit much harder (knight's resolve...).

                                                                                              It looks cool asf with some heavy armor, without an anime vibe too it.

                                                                                              For annoying, fast enemies, just crouch attack and poke them to death. Since it's a forward attack, you will have MUCH MORE chances to hit them before they hit you rather than with a regular attack.

                                                                                              For tougher enemies, you can stunlock a lot of them, sneak behind them, charge attack, follow by heavy attack and make them do a backflip. While they are on the ground charge attack, follow by... (you get the idea).

                                                                                              In fact what I love about this weapon is the versatility, you can handle fast enemies by rolling on their last combo hit and attacking just after (roll attack?). And for slower enemies you can most of the time break their poise or throw them in the air with heavy attacks.

                                                                                              I was trying to make pancakes with war cry before... but it's so situationnal to use. And why use a weapon art like that on a weapon with perfect complementary attacks?

                                                                                              Then I discovered knight's resolve, the perfect damage boost needed for this perfect weapon.

                                                                                              TLDR I like it. (now with formatting, hopefully)

                                                                                                Too underpowered. Yes it is lower weight therefore it should have lower damage than other C. Swords, but it does TOO little damage. It BARELY outdamages the Claymore FFS. As it stands it makes zero sense not to just put a few extra points into END and use the Greatsword for the massive damage boost.

                                                                                                Not to mention the poor physical guard boost. The Greatsword blocks 17 percent more physical damage making guard counters actually viable.

                                                                                                I'm sorry but a thrust heavy and lower weight do not make up for the poor balancing. From killed this weapon.
