Abandoned Cave Walkthrough

Entry

The Abandoned Cave entrance is located on the eastern wall of the canyon in Caelid, slightly northwest of the Sellia Evergaol. It can be reached from the Smoldering Wall Grace by walking across the tree (could be Erdtree roots?) that spans the canyon.

When crossing the canyon on the tree, there is a protrusion which curves diagonally from left to right (relative to the player's direction, when crossing the canyon from west to east). Stick to the left side of the tree during the section where this protrusion moves to the right, as the right side is not walkable and will result in slipping off the tree and falling to death in the canyon (if this happens, the runes will then need to be retrieved from the tree, instead of from the safety of the cliffside).

Main Dungeon Walkthrough

The dungeon starts with a one-way drop into a deep pool of scarlet rot. Proceeding left after the drop and past the geysers of rot, the player will reach a fork. On the right, past another geyser, is a dead end containing a Dragonwound Grease. The left leads to a dry tunnel, which slopes downward to the next room. The martyr effigy (to enable summoning) is located on the left at the bottom of this slope.

The next room contains, once again, a pool of scarlet rot below and a few geysers. After entering, an item is visible below; the Serpent Bow. To it's right, a Servant of Rot will be standing on some dry land, behind which is the path forward.

The tunnel leads down a few steps, then widens into a room with a Rat and another Servant of Rot. The tunnel then curves right into a small room with two rats and a Fire Grease on a corpse.

Continuing onward, the tunnel opens into a large room with a Giant Miranda Flower (scarlet variant) in the middle with a few shallow pools of scarlet rot on the right edge of the room. Approaching the center of the room causes smaller Miranda Flowers to pop up from the ground. To the left, there is a pile of broken Iron Virgins which can be climbed to reach a ledge with the Venomous Fang. On the opposite side of the room is another ledge with two Servant of Rot. Behind them is a short tunnel that leads to the boss.

Boss: Cleanrot Knights

A pair of Cleanrot Knights (one of each variant) can be found in a large room containing mostly dry land, with a shallow pool of scarlet rot near the entrance.

Upon defeat, the Cleanrot Knight pair drop the Golden Scarab talisman and 7000 runes.

Abandoned Cave Gallery and Notes

  • The interior of the cave, including the boss room is filled with pools of scarlet rot. Some are deeper pools that you cannot run through. There are also multiple enemies that afflict poison. Having items/skills to cure poison and scarlet rot is highly advised:
  • Avoid rolling through the pools of scarlet rot as this accumulates rot on the player's body, resulting in continued buildup for a short period even after moving out of the rot.

The spear guy has very low stance.
Just get wolfs if you want, I did them 0+.

But personally, equip a heavy weapon. I used the omen cleaver, amazing weapon.

You can run through the cave without getting Scarlet Rot. Make a running jump from the first ledge to try and get as far as possible. Then run for a bit along the left wall (you can't run if you don't hug the wall). Walk straight forward towards the broken down virgin. Once you reach the little island with the virgin, hug the right-side wall and run forward (again, you have to hug the wall). Right before you reach the safe area, jump. If you don't jump you will be slowed down. This is how I was able to beat it at level 37 without Boluses or Flame, Cleanse Me.

Fire pots are absolutely the way to go if you have problems with these bosses. They were smacking me around till then. just called out my skeletal militiamen and chucked 7 fire pots and killed the first guy. My pets held aggro the whole time. threw some fireballs at the second then melee d down.

Did this pretty early by focusing on getting Glovewort and Somberstones for upgrades. Glovewort 1&2 can be found in the Impaler's Catacombs in the Weeping Peninsula where you also get the demi-human ashes. Glovewort 3-5 in the Erdrtree Catacombs in Caelid, didn't even clear that bc they are right in that room full of rot near the beginning. Stones are wherever you want to find them, lots of options. I rode to Liurnia to get what I needed, and had a weapon and ashes +5 basically at the start of the game. Only enough levels to use the Bloodhound Fang, starting as a samurai. I was at level 20 or 21 for the Cleanrot Knights. I also collected a few flask upgrades of course, they are all over the place.

Did the cave by just walking fast through the rot and waiting it out on land, then next rot section etc. After the room with the serpent bow, I basically ran the rest of the cave without stopping. Of course, I know the layout, been here in previous playthroughs etc.

Get to the boss and summon +5 demi-humans (if it's nighttime all the better) and used the block-counterstrike method with the knight that wasn't getting torn to shreds by the demi's. They actually killed him and came to help me with the second one. I got rot after he puked on me but I just flasked up and let the boyz take aggro as needed. Really pretty simple and I had the Golden Scarab before killing any boss except the Bloodhound whose weapon I thought would work best in this setup, and the boss that had the ashes I wanted. You could use whatever weapon you want as long as it's a somber weapon imo. I never used the Fang's skill in this test run, it was just the most obvious choice to try.

Level 21 and cleared it with no fuss. Just a lot of riding on torrent to collect upgrade materials. Demi-Humans did most of the heavy lifting and all I had to do was fight defensively and stay alive. If collecting the somber stones in the lakes sounds like a chore, I could have probably done this with a +2 Fang as long as I had those ashes. You could have the golden scarab talisman for the entire game like this.

              • This entire dungeon can be entirely cheese with just one thing: fire pots.
                -Rot servants? Fire pots!
                -Rats? Fire pots!!
-Big flower? Fire pots!!! Now with sniper edition, yeeting pots from the safety of the tunnel you came from!!
-Boss rot knights? Fire pots!!! About 8 pots each, you can kill the first knight before the other one even comes up!!!

There's a LOT of bad design in this game, especially considering the great reviews. And I like the game. But not putting a Stake near the boss fight is total bullshit. Too many game designers use a dart board when designing this stuff.

Mushroom set + immunizing horn charm + fire cleanse me + quickstep. You are all set to go through this hell

                    • Anonymous

Same deal as with lava. Backstep.

And have fire cleanse me ready. By this point you should probably have the faith talisman (+5 faith) if you don't have the stats to be able to use the incantation.

I try to get this rather early in my playthroughs, my current record is lvl 38 no summons. going for lvl 34 on this current character. Bleh

My method for this cavern of hell on my int/fai character: mushroom/cleanrot/vulgar militia armor, opaline bubble tear and speckled tear physick saved for the boss room which, when combined with blessed dew talisman and horn charm, fights the rot tick almost 1:1. For a collection run, throw fire at everything, and kite from the little tunnel entrance as much as possible. For a boss run, use the invisibility spell and sneak through the big bad cavern straight to the fog door! I used greatshield warriors and buffed them with golden vow, let them aggro one knight, then spam cast honed bolt. The AI can't dodge it and it does extra damage due to standing in rot pools. Rinse repeat on #2, and enjoy the gold scarab!

Quite an easy cave to deal with for faith builds. Flame, Cleanse Me negates all scarlet rot throughout the cave, fully charged Flame Slings will destroy all enemies in it from a safe distance, and the Cleanrot Knights at the end go down with a few L2s from the Cipher Pata, a weightless holy weapon that anyone with 30 Faith should highly consider equipping as a back-up (when it works, it works splendidly well).

Why is there a small corner where you can summon ashes? I found that very weird, tried to summon miranda sprout ashes but nothing happened.

this cannot in any way shape or form be described as a fun experience. what were they thinking when they put a duo boss here with NO stake so you are literally forced to start the fight missing flasks and FP and if you happen to die well enjoy running through near instant rot buildup that for whatever reason does damage as well. **** area, at least lake of rot had the courtesy to have shortcuts at certain points

In general because of most of Caelid (especially places like this) I find it is extremely worth it imo to bring my faith up to 12 and memorize "Flame cleanse me" for 12 faith 14 fp per cast and one memory slot I'll sacrifice a few levels gladly to be able to navigate places like this.. particularly scarlet rot covered hell holes with ease and convenience.

Redid this cave today with the Mushroom set on, and my character was able to run through all the rot sludge. Even rolling didn't effect him.

Haven't seen this mentioned here, but you can also turn around and backstep through the deep rot pools — it's faster than walking and doesn't coat you in rot like rolling does. Very useful in certain areas.

one of the most unpleasant places in the game for sure, i think i'd prefer the Rot Lake, at least its not as claustrophobic, dont have poison-stacking enemies, and you dont have to obligatorily be infected by rot at least once so you can THEN fight a boss, but i guess its the price to pay for my newly-acquired rune farming buff... Miyazaki must have been having a pretty awful day when he designed this though, that's for sure.

                                        • Anonymous

My professional advice? Dont even get that talisman not worth the time and effort instead be like me and do varre questline and kill the huge crow by sniping from the other side ^_^ literally the best rune farming spot out there

                                          • Anonymous

Demi-Human Ashes + Fire Grease (which you can find inside this very cave) are very useful for this fight. The demi-humans will distract and stagger one of the knights while you focus on killing the other one. I was using the Greataxe +5 and spamming jumping heavies to stagger, and by the time I killed the first knight the second one had just finished killing the demi-humans, about a minute's worth of time. I'd highly recommend bringing the Crimsonburst Crystal Tear + Blessed Dew Talisman to try and offset the Scarlet Rot and Preserving Boluses will save your life and are almost required if you don't want to arrive at the boss room with 0 Flasks left. I did this at RL 37.

Very worth doing this dungeon as early as you can, that extra 20% Runes from the Golden Scarab Talisman will be useful for the entirety of your playthrough until you reach the point where you are your desired level and have completed your build, and even then, it's still (kind of) useful for when you want to farm runes to buy consumables like fan daggers or boiled crabs. Shitty dungeon, but the reward more than makes up for it.

I find this cave interesting from a lore perspective. There's the functional Iron Virgin close to the entrance and the cave itself is full of broken ones. Between those and the serpent themed items inside, this place almost certainly belonged to Rykard before being abandoned. What was its purpose? A warehouse for Virgins to support or oppose Radahn? A dump for ones broken beyond repair? Some attempt by Rykard to research the rot? And does it imply some connection between Rykard and the Duelists/Formless Serpents? I assume the Servants and Cleanrots wandered in after it was abandoned.

                                              • Anonymous

Bloodhound step doesn't work as well to get through the rot water as it does for lava. I summoned the greatshield soldiers to draw aggro from the bosses while I used the dragonice incantation on them, it was as close to a cheese as I've seen from a valid tactic. The first knight was dead before the second spawned and that one didn't last long either, I took no damage.

A comment says use the mushroom set and you wont get the rot, that might not be true. When I went through the lake of rot to get to the grand cloister I used it myself with the mottled necklace +1 and immunising horn charm, I was sprinting through the lake to get to each pressure plate and casting flame cleanse me as I needed but as soon as the incantation cleared my status bar it was quickly filling again. When I went to the wiki page to see what loot was around the lake I saw a comment from someone saying the mushroom set and talismans to boost immunity have no effect on how fast it procs the rot and I think they are right. I couldn't be bothered to test it with regular armour, no talismans and the stopwatch on my phone, but even with boosting my immunity I was having to cast flame cleanse me a lot more often than I'd been expecting to.

So, glintstone greatsword staggers the bosses indefinitely. The geyser in the first room is the hardest part of the dungeon.

                                                  • Anonymous

I missed this until level 170 and ended up two-shotting both the knights. Having just cleared the Haligtree, I was concerned when I walked into this boss room. For a second.

Not as bad as it might seem at first. Take a dagger, quickstep through the swamp bit, use red balls to remove scarlet rot, run past all enemies straight to the boss, summon wolfs to make the fight trivial

                                                      • Anonymous

I'm doing an Arcane, poison-oriented build and came to this cave for the Serpent Bow and Venomous Fang with barely any defense against scarlet rot. Figured I'd take on the Cleanrot Knight duo just for the **** of it; after several tries my recommendation for anyone else with the same idea is to use a mob summon like the demi-humans (pass time until night to make them stronger) and suppress the sickle knight with sleep pots so you can better take them out one by one.

                                                        • Anonymous

I got around to having a look in here yesterday, got just past the grace checkpoint and right away there is a massive geyser of rot-water, just shooting the stuff up into the air. I did quite fancy the Serpent Bow, but not enough to make me want to deal with all this boll**ks.

One of the things I see quite often posted by fans, and now and again see on a gaming website here and there written by some video game journalist, is someone saying that the soulsborne games are hard, but they are not spitefully hard.

I've never agreed with that sentiment, in every From Software game I've played there has been something that's obviously a F-you to players from the developers. The most obvious is the cursed and defiled chalice dungeon in bloodborne, the Amygdala boss in that dungeon took me over a hundred attempts to kill it, that's not any sort of exaggeration either, I'd died to it a load of times before I thought of keeping count of how many times it killed me. I wasn't able to summon anyone to help me with it either and I can't say I blame anyone not wanting any part of that particular boss. In the end the only way I was able to kill it was by using a weapon called simon's bowblade, I hadn't invested in the attributes needed to make a blood-tinge weapon deal any sort of significant damage, but the only way I was able to kill that Amygdala was by keeping my distance and shooting in the head when I got the chance, it took me a really a long time to kill it.

I know a lot of players had similar issues with the watchdog of the old lords boss in the same chalice dungeon as well. The die hard fans who won't hear a bad word about FromSoftware will say they were optional, that no one was forced to play them, but if you wanted the platinum trophy or some of the highest tier caryll runes you had to beat the cursed and defiled chalice to get to the Pthumerian queen that gave the last trophy needed for the platinum.

In all honesty though I think Elden Ring has far more of these F-you's to players from the developer than any of the other FromSoftware games I've played. I mean who the f**k thought having two cleanrot knights as a boss fight was a good idea, and then thought what it really needed to make it more fun was to fill the boss room with water that inflicts the rot status effect?

I used a dagger with quickstep and avoided getting scarlet rot through the whole cave( except from bosses)

                                                            • Anonymous

Those two poison-staff users on the ledge with the janky ass jump are cancer. Whoever put them there needs to have their kneecaps removed and then throw down an X-games ramp naked.

                                                              • Anonymous

Creds to whomever left the random message at the cave in-game about backstepping through the deepest rot sludge. Made the whole thing slightly less horrible so I figured that I'd pass it on.

                                                                • Anonymous

Ah there I can found the Golden Scarab Talisman lol... remember I entered that dungeon very early in the game, saw all the rot and damage over time and said "kthxbye" lol

                                                                  • Anonymous

Lost 70k runes trying to get back from the evergaol, it wasn’t worth it at all, level 120 and it was still a horrible dungeon

                                                                    • Anonymous

This used to be my 'favorite' Caelid location. Then I went to War Dead Catacombs. Now this is a faint fair memory.

                                                                      • Anonymous

FWIW A lot of people are on here saying you can avoid rot by using a dagger with quickstep. Well that is true, if you are trying to clean this place out of loot, etc. However if your goal like many is to get to the boss for that talisman, quickstep is unnecessary. I have tried this just now on a brand new character, no levels, ran straight to this cave from the start (well I got the horse but yeah). All you have to do is start at a diagonal coming from the sight of grace and facing towards the cave like area which is the direction you have to go anyways when you drop down. Just run and jump as far in as you can, you will land next to those rot geysers but if you do this as soon as you get up from the Grace they won't hit you. Maybe not 100% of the time, but I can say I tried this 20 or so times and never got hit by the geyser. When you land just hold run and forward to walk as fast as it will let you towards the mushroom covered land that is safe. I do this and rot only gets to about 80% build up, never more. Let it wear off, then do the short sequence to the left of that point. Very small pool there. Finally run and jump at a diagonal again in the next room, clearing all those geysers and the mushroom dude below. Once you run the cave 1-2 times you will have it memorized, it's actually not much of a cave when you do it like this. Everything else is just running and occasionally dodging the mushroom people's poison spells. I can now pretty consistently get from the start of the game, to the horse, to this cave, and then all the way to the boss fog gate without killing anything or getting hit by anything. Beating the 2 knights is a whole other thing though haha.

                                                                        • I can't believe i missed this place, just shows ya how much u can actual miss, I spent so much time in Caelid also, i do remember seeing that iron virgin and going across that branch, but i just stayed on it, looked around and didn't see that cave, Makes so much sense now was it was looking that way and it being there. Really got to study your surroundings and think why is this or that here. I try hard not to look up things but i'm in late game now and found the Silver Scarab and thought the gold one must be later cuz its good for farming, but nah i coulda had this tons of hours ago while farming runes. Feel kinda sad i didn't find it on my own, but i wanted that gold one!

                                                                          • Anonymous

****ing terrible dungeon. I don't know how stuff like this gets released in a game thats supposed to be fun

                                                                            • Anonymous

Spam fire pots on the sycthe and use skeleton minions to distract the spear, stay distanced and glinstone pebble

                                                                              • Anonymous

Key clutch tips (i was level 44 with only 15 vigor and only used wolves summon): (1) Use dagger shortstep to get past 1st rot pool; (2) You can run past the 2 rats and 2 spellcasters but learn how to dodge the poison homing spells as you make your way up; and (3) Cant stress enough, use the Lordsworn's greatsword (+2) and use jump + R2 when you first attack the spear knight and scythe knight... After learning how to dodge their attacks (through many deaths) i started the fight attacking the spear knight and then i baited both spear knight and scythe knight away from rot pool... Then summoned wolves and let wolves attack spear knight while i attacked the scythe knight... Seriously just jump+R2, then R1 2 times then dodge away and repeat on scythe knight until he dies and then spear knight ... I had used all 4 potions by time scythe knight was down and had 1 or 2 low hp wolves left on spear knight

                                                                                • Anonymous

Flame Cleanse Me, was a great spell to heal poison and scarlet rot. Requires 12 faith, but worth it. You can avoid most of the geysers with timing. The first one, you can run-jump off the cliff after it erupts, and then roll until you hit the island. Then go left, but watch out for the geyser. Timing is important. After that, you can run past the flowers, rats, and the thing with the halberd until you get to the tunnel. Regroup, and do the boss fight. Recommend a multi-unit Spirit Ash summon (i used wolves) and... if you're magical, blast them with Comet. Found each of them took 4/5 hits and wala! Golden Scarab. Good luck.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I can get the Talisman and beat the boss easily at lvl 30.
You want to get it asap, as the extra runes help ridiculously.
To do so, start as either the Wretch or Mage. Get the horse, spirit bell and the treasure room near the map marker. You want 12 Strength and 15 Dex to start. After that pump int and Mind to 20, starting with mind.
Jump to the giant area, and get the grace near the knight.

Get the jellyfish summon from red hood girl, and get the golden seed downhill. You want to head to the catacombs after this, in the opposite direction. Get the Uchi. Help Alex, and head across the bridge near the lake.
Head to the church and grab the flask and tear. If you have 1,000 extra runes, buy the heater shield from the merchant in the forest.

Head down the well and raid everything you can. Near the Horn bow, there is a hidden 7 rune item. Go back up and head to the church.

Go up TWO jumps and head to the mine nearby. Talk to Alex and go outside. Zoom to the Caelid side and scooby doo through the cave. Now head to the Seaside ruins and go to the guarded treasure room.

Kill the rats and open the trap chest. Once there, open the chest and scooby out. You will die a few time from the bull**** mages, but you will find a site of Grace and a Rot grease nearby. Go down the hill, past the gasbags and either way is good. Get the rotten dog ashes and the SoG for later. Head the opposite way to hit the Street of Sages. Grab the set, staff and the spell in the treasure room. Rest at the SoG, and you will get Roundtable invite. You can now zoom back to Alex’s location and enter the bossfight with as few runes as possible. You want to die. Then convert all flasks to blue, and cast Rocks through the fog wall. Aiming is a *****, so you might run out before killing the boss. If you can’t kill it in 3 tries, level up some. You need 23 int anyway, so..You need Somber smithing Stones, which you can find up to +5. Liurnia has the +3 you will need. To get it head north past the Stormhill Shack. There is a path northeast. Head through the wolf tunnel and grab the SOG. Get the maps and keep heading north. There should be a mining area sign far to the north, similar to the lake Agheel one. Get the mine and continue north. There will be some corpses in chairs along the river. One of them will have the +3 we need. The +4 is in the mine, which you should scooby through. Finally, you want the magic Knife in the mine too.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Saw a lot of folks shiting the pants when talking about the two bosses, easyest boss fight i had in this game.
Took 0 damage, im using 2H Greatsword. Just rushed to the spear dude first and rekt him, rolled up and ****ed up the blade dude.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Shitty dungeon. Practically impossible to avoid the aoe splashes of the rot eruptions getting down there. You can avoid the big bursts, but the air lingers. Just take an extra fp flask in to the dungeon, quickstep your way through it, replenish fp before the boss, use summon (+5 ghost upgrade summon can basically solo the boss) get out of this hellhole with an awesome bow and talisman. **** this place.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Used Demi-human Ashes +5 just at the door and they ganbanged the 1st knight. I just kept switching knights until they were dead. The little guys interrupt the knights and swarm them enough so I could freely spam my reduvia.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

There is a way to get through the Abandoned Cave without incurring Scarlet Rot. It involves some long jumps, resting between areas, and NOT getting hit by the geysers.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Get a beefy summon for the cleanrot knights and you should be good. The main issue is the scarlet rot beforehand. 1 or 2 cures should do the trick though. GL.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

reverse gank fight, just bring 5 little friends with great shields

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I was able to easily cross back west from the evergoal and then look at where I came from to see a darkness with a branch leading into it. Took forever

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

The run-up to the boss is feasible without engaging any enemies. I did it a bunch of times (because I died to these fkn gankbois a bunch of times) as a squishy 15-Vig 40-Faith build not using quickstep.

The biggest threat is that first geyser. Gotta jump as far as you can on the left side of it after it erupts. You can walk through to the first high ground right after that without getting rot, but just barely. Then you gotta wait for the proc bar to go down, which sucks and is tedious.
But after that you can just sprint to the fog gate pretty easily sticking to the right wall of the cave.

As for the gankfest boss, I used the Banished Knight Engvall ashes not upgraded. Honestly any tanky ash will help but its still a toss-up because that caster spams those golden disks like crazy, I swear he doesn't ever run out of stamina. After too many tries I was able to cast my way to victory with lightning spears.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Jump R2 spear knight a few times the stab in gut. by now Knight 2 is spawned, Jump attack spear knight a few more times and he's down. Then just let wolves go after 2nd knight while mostly safely pellet from a distance with fire arrows from short bow. Surprisingly easy. . . after many deaths trying with the katana, the greatsword really works well against their poise.

You can summon ashes. Right there, in this tiny spot. Anyone found out if this is some kind of secret, given the right summon?

Beat the bosses 3rd try at lvl 55 with +2 Oleg. Burst one down as fast as you can and then it's gg.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

After reading all the comments iv put this off for ages due to fear. I'm a very bad melee build with no cleanse so I was worried but it was over hyped. Died to initial geysers twice trying to find safe spots but just rushed it and powered through with crimson tears and no consumables on the third push. If it helps anyone out there this is what I did.

I had 8 "Crimson Tears +7", 2 Cerulean Tears, and damage negating-strength boost Physick.
                                                                                                                      700hp, Immunity (306/111 but I still got rot almost immediately), Bloodhound's Fang+7 (284/234).

Dropped in and rushed though killing everything minus the plants. Drank crimson tears around 10% health each time.

Walked into the boss room... Summon Marionette Soldiers Ashes +3 (they are weak but fast attacks hold aggro), drank Physick, drank Cerulean Tears and spammed whatever one was aggro'd on me with Bloodhound Finesse + heavy attack. They seem very week to Slash/bleed (or just very weak) and it melted him before he could attack then jumped on his partner while the Ashes had him distracted.

I'm a bad build that still uses original samurai armor. I accidently had on increased horseback damage and immunity talisman (which seemingly did very little). I could of ran past the MOBs and used consumables. If I fumbled though it, any melee build should be able to. Good luck

I don't want to put it off since you'll net more rewards with the scarab equipped, but having done this place legitimately at level 1 previously....I never wanna do it again.

One is just as you enter the room with the Giant flower and its just to the left of the entrance to the room. The second one is in the boss room far to the NorthWest corner of the room. Warning those as rolling around those areas will count the same as rolling in the Scarlet Rot. Hope this helps

Just spam your skill as soon as you drop into the pool at the start. I make it through with maybe half build up each time.
