Can actually hit enemies through walls with this if they're very close to the wall. I use it to foil obvious ambushes like all those putrid corpses that love to try to shove or grab you when you walk through a doorway in the Haligtree town.

I don’t care if it did like 5 damage and 0 poise damage, I wish the talon slash itself atleast hit the foe. It just seems weird that you’re slashing and it does nothing.

Extremely niche at best, obsolete altogether if you're running Bloodflame Blade on a weapon with innate bleed, which odds are you probably will be if you're using it at all. This spell's range is pitiful and puts you in a disadvantage right out of the gate due to the innate input > attack delay so someone can easily tag you and then dodge roll before the explosion triggers. Would have been much more viable if it at least had a running/jumping attack like Catch Flame (which is 100% a better spell over this)

A BFB-buffed bleed weapon is going to have higher bleed build-up per second than this and without the delay AND you can get it much sooner, which is a bummer because I love the idea of this spell but the reality is it's just flat-out badly designed and poorly thought through.

Not sure if this is helpful to anyone, but it's great for farming those huge Miranda flowers that drop Miranda powder, who I find annoying to fight otherwise w/ regular weapons. Just chain cast it in their face, proccing bleed and dealing fire damage which they're weak to. Even better than Catch Flame for this purpose, because of the bleed.

            • Anonymous

How much blood loss build up does this obtain when paired with 80 arc and the dragon seal? Because that’s possibly what makes bloodflame talons viable

              • Anonymous

True combos into repeating thrusting aow. Pretty good defensively too. Probably one of the better pvp incants up there with pest threads and bestial sling

                • Anonymous

Improved considerably by hitting the first poise breakpoint (51) in PvE. You'll still be forced to trade most of the time, but most smaller enemies won't be able to interrupt your casts and can usually be stunlocked after you hit them once.

Wish you could get the version Mohg uses that has the big explosion at the end. It could be useful against groups of weaker enemies while the normal version's spammability would make it better against single tougher ones you want to proc bleed on as quick as possible.

                    • Anonymous

I wish they would buff this by slightly reducing the time between the slash and explosion and/or a faster cast time, along with a running and jumping cast.

I recently started appreciating this. Absolutely amazing PvP spell, the bane of overly aggressive fist weapon/straightsword spammers

                        • Anonymous

Surprisingly effective in PvP if your opponent decides to bum-rush you, cast this right when they get close and then roll away and they'll likely get caught in the explosion before they can react.

                          • Anonymous

Give this spell a running attack version and it will be so good, ive been using it alot lately, it combos beautifully into morgotts curved swords ash of war with all of its function and blinding effectiveness, but with a running attack for the spell, it'll have the perfect amount of defensive and offensive viability

                            • Anonymous

The explosion from the bloodflame talons is massive and bright enough to hide some ashes of war's startup, like piercing fang or blood tax.

I love spamming this on dweebs that only r1 poke, if you’re good at predicting your opponents this spell is great.

                                • Anonymous

I really love the spell but I think it misses it’s mark and drops off heavily mid to late game. Personally it should be the blood version of Discus of Light in the sense it’s a cheap quick spammable filler.

If the casting was slightly quicker, explosion larger, swipe did fire damage but the explosion stays as is (giving the bleed) and cost 6 fp it be a great alternative for a full caster run and be useful all through endgame. Currently by the time you get it, you’ll get a few hours of use if that then replace it.

It’s a shame, visually awesome, just needs a few tweaks and be awesome.

This incantantation not only combos into WoG, it might play a similar role as a get-off-me spell quite effectively, with negligible stat requirement. Certainly better than Rejection at that.

                                    • Anonymous

Most people only use this for rp builds or used it to chain cast. Its seen as a pretty bad spell, which isnt wrong, but I think I know what it is good for that nothing else does better. If your doing a low level run where your also not using any upgrades, this is surprisingly good for stun locking enemies to death and bleeding them with it and swarm of flies. At higher levels or even low level runs where your willing to upgrade your weapons this thing is basically useless compared to other options, but at low levels % based damage is very useful for late game enemies and has low enough stamina cost to spam it until a posture break

                                      • I like how so many people are complaining about the Initial slash having no hitbox or damage. You are supposed to grab into the body of the formless mother and rip some blood out of it to throw it at your enemies. Its made by Design.

That said, it would be more viable If it would deal damage.

                                        • Anonymous

This has been a surprisingly useful attack for me against Godfrey with Max Casting Speed. Wish the explosion range was just a tad larger but it's great weaving a Bloodflame Talon in right after a dodge, and being able to dodge again right before the next attack hits and the Bloodflame explosion goes off at the same time. Other than that this really does feel oddly like a more defensive Incantation, though I suppose that is how Mohg himself uses it as well. Sort of a "Hey step back or Bleed" attack

                                          • Anonymous

The sad reality is that, for the majority of enemies you face, this incantation gets forced into the defensive role most of the time, due to its only damage coming a moment after casting. This property of it does make it quite good at that though, letting you answer overly-aggressive mobs — such as dogs — with an explosion to the face.
It has a similar role in your toolkit against other Tarnished, though due to how laughably non-committal any attack from a Tarnished is, you are only ever going to get hits by hard-reading your opponent.

On the offensive, though, Bloodflame Talons really shines against the larger, slower foes that aren't as able to evade its repeated attacks, such as Erdtree Avatars.

The explosion AoE is too small for my liking. You have to be at backstab range to for it to take effect. And the bleed build up is meh.

                                              • Anonymous

Ive been working this spell into my playstyle in pvp. Running an arcane build with communion seal +9. Ive found it to be really good against hyper aggro players who wont get off your back. The initial cast can be slow but the blast always causes a stagger which can set up a combo. Often these combos if your using elonoras, rob, anything with double slash or sword dance can kill an opponent outright. Its not good in every situation, (blood incantations in general are not) but man is it cool when you pull it off.

                                                • Anonymous

Lots of people hating on the fact the initial slash doesn’t deal damage. This is certainly a downside in many situations, but this encourages a very unique playstyle. Against slower enemies, cast this 1-2 sec before the target reaches you, then backstep or roll backwards to get out of range. Works great against shielded enemies.

Also in tight spaces, you can free aim this while hiding behind a corner/doorway, then have the enemy walk into the explosion. Niche, but very fun to use.

                                                  • Anonymous

Why they decided the initial slash has no sort of hit box is beyond me. Same thing with the Carian sword spells having a hit box but Black Blade incantation doesn’t.

                                                    • Anonymous

Haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere yet, but if you dual wield seals and alternate casting this from each seal, it can be chain cast quite a bit faster compared to continuously casting it from a single seal. However, this requires precise timing to work. Activate the next cast exactly when the full red slash is visible, right before the red slash becomes brighter and the explosion occurs.

Once you get the rhythm down, this is a deadly combo with dual dragon communion seals on ng+. Similar concept to how dragonclaw can be chain cast by dual wielding seals.

                                                      • Anonymous

This is stylistically my favorite spell, but I can't figure out what situation I'd use it instead of my whips/claws.. Is the bleed buildup significantly higher than weapons?

The startup is so long, the only hits I get are usually losing trades.

                                                        • Anonymous

While not particularly overwhelming in PvP, especially when catch flame exists, this spell does work well when considering mindgames. The first cast will almost certainly not hit, but players will often try to rush in after the first or second cast, allowing you to cast an additional time to hit them. In PvE it seems to work fine enough, and the bleed build up is always appreciated.

                                                          • Anonymous

Pretty good "get out of my face" spell, has more stagger and range than catch flame, little bit more damaging + bloodloss buildup for 4 addicional fp. It does come out slower wich can be good for roll catching at point blank range but it cannot be casted while running or performing a similar action. I would say its up to preference whether you wanna use this instead of catch flame, but I would use this if I had another weapon on the main hand + talisman on the offhand, and catch flame if playing caster only

                                                            • Anonymous

Personally I think this incantation is terrible for PvP. You can easily be staggered out of it, and it doesn't even do that much damage. You're actually better off using Noble Presence since that gets some poise and can do good damage if you charge.

                                                              • Anonymous

I played around with param patcher (no worries, i don't play online at all), and added a hit to the initial swipe. And let me tell you, the spell feels so much better to use now. Not having any damage on the claw swipe just seems wrong imo

                                                                • Anonymous

Fun fact: the explosion staggers Malenia. Beat her last night with a mimic just spamming this and the flame pillar incantation you get from killing the fire giant (fire pillars knock her on the ground).

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

Is fast, but can also be used as a slower, timing mix up with a fast weapon (like a curved sword or a thrusting sword), and if hit combos into an R1, maybe with a bleed weapon to quickly fill the meter, or you can combo it into fast spells like catch flame. You can also use it to trade if you cast it right before getting hit, and it hits for a solid amount of damage not to mention a potential bleed proc.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

One thing I haven't seen people mention is that THIS SPELL COMBOS.
You can use Catch Flame, or Rock Sling and lead either of those into this spell, and still combo this spell into a Honed Bolt, or whatever else you want to combo with.

                                                                              • Anonymous

I used this thing to tear apart the Godskin Duo after putting them to sleep. It's a terrible combo on big sleep vulnerable enemies. It also just stacks bleed fast on big things in general. Faster, though riskier than the blood flys incantation.

                                                                                • Anonymous

This is a pretty good spell but it requires a bit of foresight to be useful. It works well combined with bloodhound step to position yourself and bait your enemy properly. It won’t do crazy damage but one slash has the potential to stagger in pvp which can then be followed up into a combo with your off hand. For pve I mainly use it to maximize damage if a target rushes me then dash out since the casting time is about a second shorter than swarm of flies.

Since they will most likely step and attack the second see you use it you can unlock and aim at where they will be for a trade. This does decent stagger so you can true combo it into a catch flame or attack with a weapon like a straight sword or a thrusting sword. Rather unfortunately you will still get outdamaged by a ugs so be careful.
