Night's Cavalry are Bosses in Elden Ring. These imposing knights ride atop dark steeds and appear only at night, wielding large flails and halberds. There are several Night's Cavalry that roam the Lands Between. These are optional bosses, as players don't need to defeat them in order to advance in Elden Ring.

The Night's Cavalry, who now wander the dim roads at night, were once led by the Fell Omen and were deliverers of death for great warriors, knights, and champions.

Night's Cavalry Combat information

  • Stance: 80
    • There is a poise-damage reduction multiplier of 0.2, so every hit deals only 20% of basic poise damage.
    • Resummoning the horse resets their poise
    • Poise cannot be broken while mounted.
  • Is vulnerable to a critical hit after being stance broken or knocked out of horse
  • The horse and rider have separate health bars, and only the rider needs to be killed to end the fight. Killing the horse causes the rider to fall to the ground and become vulnerable to a dismount critical. After some time, the rider will resummon the horse with its Remount attack. It's much more likely to remount quickly if you move far away from it, so stay close to maximize the amount of time it's in a weakened state.
    • Horse is slightly less resistant to damage than rider.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Night's Cavalry Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Night's Cavalry:

  • Use Lightning Spear to whittle down its health from afar
  • Use Glintstone Arc to hit both the horse and its rider at once
  • Use a weapon with long reach that deals Pierce Damage, such as a Spear or Halberd
  • Knights met at Dragonbarrow and Forbidden Lands can be - with precise maneuvering - tricked into falling from the cliff.

Melee Users

Fighting on foot is recommended. They're fast enough to match your pace on Torrent, and the extra maneuverability and ability to dodge on foot will help a lot. Dismounting is especially important once you kill their horse, as they're much more likely to use Remount if you're further away from them.

Keep it Close: The rider is surprisingly maneuverable at a distance, so keep the fight close to them, dodging into their attacks and landing hits as you come out of your rolls. They have few attacks that can hit you if you're on their left flank and none that can hit you by the hindquarters, so try to stay there as much as possible. Your safest opportunity for damage is after a Weapon Slam, but you can get in a quick hit while the horse is rearing up as well. Beware of their surprising Leap Attack, which can cover a lot of distance very quickly.

Bait a Charge: Stand a medium distance away to bait the Night's Cavalry into charging you, then dodge in the direction it's moving (ideally aiming for its left flank to limit its available attacks) and attack once or twice. Once you've landed a few hits, get some distance and repeat the process.

Magic and Ranged Users

Bait a Charge: Stand a medium distance away to bait the Night's Cavalry into charging you, then dodge in the opposite direction from the way it's moving to get some room to cast or use a bow. If you're finding your shots going astray, try firing during the charge when the horse leans its head down and you have a clear shot on the rider.

Horseback: Time your dashes to evade the Night's Cavalry's attacks and shoot while it's recovering or starting the next attack. Be aware that it can cover a lot of distance very quickly, so focus more on circling it and avoiding its attacks then on getting a large amount of distance.

Night's Cavalry Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • They were originally planned to be a wandering encounter, found at random areas around the map, before being put at their set locations. This idea was also planned for the Black Knights of Dark Souls and the Pursuer from Dark Souls II.
  • There are 9 locations where members of the Night's Cavalry can be found, a clear reference to Ring Wraiths from the Lord of the Rings. In the files, they are even called Nazgul.
  • If the player manages to kill the horse with fire damage while hitting the rider as well, the knight will die instantly, no matter how much health it has.
  • Killing the rider during the animation related to getting back on their horse or jumping may cause horse to survive and become invincible. The horse will not be hostile to the player if this happens.
  • While raw number of their poise is not the highest, their effective poise - due to multiplier - is 400. What makes them the hardest enemy to poise-break amongst bosses.
  • The Night's Cavalry is led by Margit, the Fell Omen, as alluded to my Margit's quote if defeated at Stormveil and the description of their Armor Set.
  • When dismounted, Night's Cavalry seem to have a similar moveset to Halberd Banished Knights excluding the storm attacks and a few other moves. This can look odd on the flail-wielding Night's Cavalry.

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

I had a weird glitch with the ones in Consecrated Snowfield. I killed one of them then while running away from second one I was invaded by NPC and the other boss vanished. I tried to reload the map few times but caravan is without bosses and I've got no reward nor chance to get loot from them

      • Anonymous

Ok does these night cavalry summon a f**king ghosly dragonkin soldier and a npc invader to aid the last night calvary because I had to hot dog both of them while they stuck with the guy and both died when he did.

        • Anonymous

Fighting them on foot is actually much easier than mounted, they'll just come to you and half of the time stop and do the Rearing Swing attack which will miss you, and you can whale on them until they run and come back to do it again. Getting through the duo in the snowfield saved me a lot of headache.

          • Anonymous

I've beaten the ones on Consecrated Snowfield using Blasphemous Blade, just gotta aim without lock on and predict where they'll run to.

            • Anonymous

I don’t know what went wrong with this boss. There seems to actually be some sort of mistake in his AI or something. I don’t know if it’s because, for some reason, they decided to make the horse and the knight to different enemies, or if their attacks are just coded poorly… But I’ve never once had a good fight with these guys. The one in Limgrave, for example, will aggro to me and start tweaking like mad, trying to run off the bridge and getting stuck in place, without me having even moved. It’s like they have the same horse mechanics we do, with the ultimate troll that is the torrent backstep animation. Every time they turn to face you, it’s like they have a stroke. And the fact that the horse and the knight are two separate enemies means you can wait for years to get an opening, just to hit the damn horse. The normal tree sentinels and Loretta are really fun bosses to fight (we don’t talk about draconic tree sentinel), I just don’t know why they couldn’t have made these guys good too, especially considering how cool they look. Just some really weird design choices for them.

              • Anonymous

Anyone else think there might be something genuinely wrong with the AI of this enemy? They constantly do this weird stop and go movement and animation cancel their own attacks just as often, and I cant really think of any other enemy that does that. It could be why they're so annoying to fight.

                • Anonymous

Sitting on Torrent drinking my mix with increased Lighning Damage and then play a bit Zeus. Thats how i killed them without much afford :D

When I'm in a "wasting time while running around" competition and my opponent is Night's Cavalry (he won)

                    • Anonymous

Not sure if I experienced a glitch with the duo knights at Consecrated Snowfield during last night's play via PS5. But here's the story:

Died a few times attacking the one with the flail guarding the left side of the caravan. Decided to change tactics so I attacked & got rid of the one with the glaive on the opposite side first.

Went back to the flail one & let him chase me a bit farther from the caravan's way. Reason was to also avoid the other obstacles that also joined the fray in the caravan's path -- those annoying balls that cast lightning & Dragonkin spirits that just keep respawning.

But the flail one didn't seem so aggressive as the other Knight ... It still attacked, but also seemed more preoccupied with trying to catch up with the caravan. So most of the hits I got in was when it had its back turned to me as it was riding back. Could it have been like some sort of glitch?

Anyways, not complaining after I got their armor set & an Ancient Dragon smithing stone :)

                      • Anonymous

I think its peak comedy to poison the horse and bonk them when they run into me until the horse dies and they fall off. You don't need horseback when you have the ability to be incredibly silly .....

                        • Anonymous

For the one at Dragonbarrow, if you get it to follow you to near Lenne's Rise and then to the cliff near the bridge, it will fall off the cliff if you get on the bridge, as it gets stuck near the dead tree beside the bridge.

                          • Cakewalk for mages, a boring slog of a fight for melee builds, even more than some other mobile bosses. Well at least it aint got no oneshot unavoidable attacks, thanks I guess

Getting an unexpected encounter with the Pursuer felt threatening, fun, even if it all boiled down to parrying, every time I see one of these I just see a big ****ing annoyance to deal with.

Cheese for Consecrated Snowfield duo. Kill one troll and the pages in the party,. Reload. Go to the cliff above the carriage from the east side after making the blue ball fire off (can be done when killing pages). Stay on the very edge so as not to aggro the big MF'er ghost thing up on that plateau.

Standing around the eastern edge of that cliff lets you take out the Calvary in full glass cannon mode with whatever ranged you want. Their AI lets them move up to you if you are on horseback or standing too high. Lightning bolts worked well. Status effects are a little hard to proc because one of them moves around a lot.

The one in altus glitches for me sometimes. His model and horse will start hoing vertical like a slot machine then his health goes back full.. wtf.. ive got prolly 1000 hrs in this game and this is the onky glitches iv seen

For as cool as these guys are, they’re an absolute nuisance to fight. You spend 5 minutes waiting for them to give you an opening only to hit the horse.

I like doing these on foot, but if you want to do horsey combat, for the leap attack, take advantage of the fact that you can jump higher. Instead of dashing away (make sure you’re locked on), jump towards the spooky guy and once they attack, do your double jump which will pull you right next to them from behind which lets you get some good hits in.

I have a dex melee build. I first fought the one in Dragonbarrow to try to get BHS, tried to cheesed him by getting him to jump off but to no avail. Decided to straight up meleed him and after dying a dozen or so times, I found out that it's piss easy if you manage to get to left side of him and hit him constantly. Like most of his attacks are telegraphed to be on his right side but the left side literally only have 1 attack and it's a slightly delayed downward swing that can be easily dodged by rolling into or away from him, the horse didn't even bother to tackle too and start running away if you got enough hits in. When he try to circle you he can get stuck on the bridge's wall and exposed his left side to you. Killed him that way and never had much trouble with the others night cavalry by pretty much doing the same thing.

I just found an easy cheese method for the Consecrated Snowfield pair. If you drag them far enough away from their carriage, they will slowly walk back to it, so you can get easy hits off because they are not nearly as aggressive when they're in range of their carriage. Be careful, although they aren't aggressive the can still attack but they will go back to returning to their carriage after attacking.

The ones with the flail seemed to be bugged. One of the attacks seem to behave similar to the blood dogs that instantly one shot you when the game first came out. I have a build with 60 vig and the tree sentinel set and the one in Altus plateau nearly one shot me and it happened again in the consecrated snowfield.

                                                    • Anonymous

I killed the one in weeping peninsula and the horse ended up being left behind. The rider wasn’t in the middle of the mounting animation when I killed him, and the horse still can take damage. Anyone else experience this?

                                                      • Anonymous

Blasphemous Blade + heavy armor, maybe bullgoat talisman
                                                        Spam Takers Flame
You'll poise through their attacks, heal up, and stagger all in one.

                                                        • After reading the comments, this is clearly a very divisive boss type. I personally love fighting these guys. The first one I found was in Limgrave and it kicked my ass. After defeating the one in Weeping Peninsula - with my heart racing the entire time - I had the confidence to take on the OG. I've progressed quite a bit and have apparently missed/forgotten a couple. I look forward to finding them later so I can give them what for!

P.S. Even if it's awkward, I love mounted combat. I feel much safer and I can always get in fully-charged attacks.

Love the attack combo flowcharts. Somebody had too much time on their hands, and decided to do something truly productive with it.

The souls acquired through defeating each rider is probably one of the most explicit indicators of the intended level range per area. Personally, I hoped they'd learn not to heavily rely on vertical progression, as DS1 and Sekiro beautifully demonstrated, but whatever.

consecrated snowfield ones are so obnoxious, i love being invaded ontop of being attacked by 3 different enemies at once that can 2shot me

                                                                • Anonymous

Probably an unpopular opinion but I find these guys super cringe. Very weird hitboxes and extremely high damage. Not fun at all.

                                                                  • This was my first souls game, still is, on my first playthrough, and the final fight was actually really fun, probably one of thre first fights I actually learned the move set for, after learning it I barely got hit and it was a lot of fun.

                                                                    • Anonymous

The glaive ones are the worst... The AI is incredibly indecisive about it's attacks and following thru with them. About 80% of the time I can stand absolutely still when it starts its Grinding Strafe move and it'll automatically cancel and instead circle me before starting another Strafe and canceling that as well.

Not a hard boss but it's definitely a great time waster.

                                                                      • Anonymous

If anyone is having issues at consecrated snowfield that fight can be slowed down, making it less frantic and allows for the safe use of a flask or buff, but both still need to be killed before it gets light so its best to forward time to night at the inner consecrated snowfield grace.
The caravan they are escorting obviously moves so when one of them is lured away from it their station gets further and further away from them as the fight goes on.
This can be exploited by hitting one with an arrow from as far behind the caravan as possible but near enough to still be able to draw one of them towards you.
They started to break off from the fight when their HP bar was just past halfway, but I use guard counter with a defensive mindset for the night's cavalry if you are super aggressive you might not see them do it at all, they lose aggro and start to slowly ride back to the caravan before getting aggro again and coming back to the fight. This happened four or five times before I killed it, this is first hand and current, I did it myself yesterday to get the ancient dragon smithing stone.
As long as you start from the grace nearest to where the caravan starts travelling from, and forward to nighttime, even if it is already night, so you will have the maximum amount of time possible to kill both of them.

                                                                        • Anonymous

this boss is pathetically easy. any basic weapon can kill it with ease. once you knock him off his horse, hes basically dead. just stab him a bunch while hes on the floor.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

I just read that if you kill the rider when he is getting on the horse it makes the horse invincible. Just now he died of poison right when he mounted up and the horse ran hella far away but its still alive and invincible.

                                                                              • Anonymous

For Fist and Claw users, once you knock them off their horse, you can chain grab them with Lifesteal fist until they die.

                                                                                • You can bait the one in Weeping Peninsula into dropping off a cliff somewhere. I have no idea where, I was just running from him in panic and he died off screen.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

The two in the snowfield can be fought separately, you just can't rest inbetween them. Just kite one away from the other and you can fight it alone.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

The night's armour set reward for killing both at consecrated snowfield is a really nice looking set and I think it has to be a strong contender for the nicest in the game, but my preferred sets are the tree sentinel and Radahn's set but without the stupid, hair sticking up all over the place hat that goes with it. When I compared their stats in the equip menu though it was disappointing to see the difference side by side and it makes no sense especially considering the night's cavalry being able to take hard hits the way they do.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I thought the two night's cavalry in consecrated snowfield was a duo fight and I couldn't see myself beating two at once, that's not what happened though.
I don't know if it's been changed in an update, but getting one to aggro with a bow doesn't automatically aggro the second as well, at least it didn't yesterday for me. I made killing both high page and the wandering noble that carries a horn my first priority, high page can be a handful and if the noble had sounded its horn they all would have been on top of me.
A couple of things to be careful with though, riding on the caravan seems to prevent the spectral dragonkin from spawning. But if you ride it too far wanting to be sure nothing can interfere while you fight the second, the albinauric archer f**ks around albinauric rise will see you and they will start landing hits.
I had to get off and hug the rocky ledge out of their line of sight but I walked into the middle of a dire wolf pack and they killed me.
It's a good idea to loot the caravan in the daytime before fighting the nights as well, I wasn't able to open the chest while the caravan was moving and one of the trolls destroyed it trying to get at me.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • OK, I'm just tryin to help ya'll out.

#3 Ice Spear - Dropped by a Night's Cavalry boss in the eastern Liurnia landmass, near the broken Gate Town Bridge

This combination can literally kill anything in the game including Malenia, the big dragon, the beast shaman, the nights cavalry - all of them. Even the duo in the snowfield - just put one yeti to sleep and then lure the morningstar dude out of range and put up your shield and just POKIE POKIE POKIE.

Malenia - Just put up your shield and POKIE POKIE POKIE.

The Knight outside Maliketh ... POKIE POKIE POKIE.

The Dragon in Farum Azula - POKIE POKIE POKIE.

Greatshield talisman helps, Dragoncrest shield talisman helps... but literally you can kill every ****ing thing in the game with a good shield and ice spear on the halberd.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Those two at the snowfield, there's no way I'm fighting two of them at the same time. Nope. Ran around and Rot Breath-ed them to death. Didn't even feel guilty about it.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I've been hit and miss with the night's cavalry. I know I can kill them, but they have the same intimidation factor for me now as they did the first time I saw one. when it notices me then stops the horse and stares at me just before charging me down, it always gets my adrenaline pumping and I make mistakes then die. I've been at leyndell for a while, but I only saw the worth of the guard counter in the shunning grounds. I thought it might be worth trying on the night's cavalry near the 'altus highway junction' grace and the one I've been having most trouble with near 'lenne's rise' grace in dragonbarrow, it worked a treat. using the guard counter made light work of both of them, I had the curved sword, dragoncrest shield, greatshield and carian filigreed crest talismans equipped and a brass shield with 'barricade shield' AoW it was very effective. 'barricade shield' doesn't just block the night's weapon, it works on the horse's attacks as well, the horse's attacks can also be guard countered. the one using a flail on the road near the 'altus highway junction' grace is the easiest of the two to kill using the guard counter, the one near 'lenne's rise' grace in dragonnarrow has a glaive, the barricade shield works just as well to block its attacks as it does with the flail, but this one has a combo that can hit you either in the middle of or just after hitting it with a guard counter. it needs a bit more care, but it does ride some distance to turn around and come back for another attack giving enough time to use at least one flask. I don't know how effective this strategy would be without barricade shield to mitigate the stamina hit you would otherwise take from blocking their attacks, but once you've got that you'll be golden. the curved sword talisman is in stormveil castle past margit. if anyone is having trouble with them I recommend trying this. I can't see it working in consecrated snowfield fighting two at the same time though.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Probably an unpopular opinion, but these guys are so much easier to fight on foot. Keep your shield up, block an attack, and get yours in. Really only have to watch out for the side shove move - otherwise you can get his health down pretty low before knocking him off the horse. He will always run away and give you time to rebuild your stamina - just gotta do the patience dance

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

I've killed the nights cavalry in Limgrave, weeping peninsula, both in Liurnia and one in caelid that patrols the road near the nomadic merchant in caelid south, when I stopped panicking every time they charged straight at me and was able to stay calm when fighting them, I had no issues going though them one after the other, no cheese strategy and not doing hit and run on torrent. The nights cavalry on the bridge near Lenne's rise in dragon barrow is a different story though. I'd expect enemies of the same type to be harder when encountered at later stages of the game, more resistance to damage and able to do more damage to me as well, but this nights cavalry in dragonbarrow seems to be a completely different animal. I know how to fight them effectively on foot, but this one is jumping around a lot more than any of the others did, I dodge an attack and go to hit him with a jumping R2 but he jumps away before I can connect the hit, then I have to dodge again and then again right away, but because I've been having to constantly dodge attack after attack from him don't have enough stamina and I usually end up taking a hard hit from his glaive. He can't kill me with one hit but I've still died plenty of times because I'm finding it nearly impossible to get into some sort of rhythm because of all the jumping around he is doing, it makes him unpredictable.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

I killed the first Cav only to be invaded when fighting the second one. I'd recommend killing this invader first, they spawn West Northwest of the Inner Con. Snowfield Gracepoint.

also, As another commenter has noted, When I fought the first cav (flail) I noticed that he de-aggrod when he was far away from the carriage. You can get a few free ranged hits in before he aggros again. Would recommend. I used Lightning spear on horseback.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

You can break the AI on the Dragonbarrow one by going up the tree on the bridge. He runs around then stops to stare at nothing because he can't touch you. I discovered it while trying to bait him into jumping off for the lolz.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I've killed the knights in Limgrave, weeping peninsula, both Liurnia of the lakes and the one near a merchant in Caelid without cheesing, but the knight on the bridge at dragonbarrow is kicking my a*se continually. None of the others were jumping around as much as this one, maybe one out of every ten attempts to land a jump attack is connecting, its not helping that I'm having to dodge roll as much as I am with this one either, even using the pickled turtle necks, physik and talisman to boost stamina recovery don't seem to be helping much. Does anyone have any ideas that doesn't involve a cheese strategy?

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Beat him and he gave me almost as many runes as Radhan! It was a drawn out horseback battle where I just rode around in circles lol

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

They can't hit you unless a jump lands them on the pillar, in which case, you just jump off, lure away, and hop back on once it's down.

                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

For anyone having trouble with the Ck secreted Snowfield pair, I noticed a glitch that occurred when fighting them.

I drew them away from the hearse carrying the treasure and was getting my ass whooped by both of them. Somehow our fight came back to the hearse where the treasure was and they instantly de-aggro'd and started walking away.

I just cheesed them with lightning spears but tried meleeing one. In one instance the fight started again but in another save he would aggor, than walk away. It was weird but I hope this helps someone.

This means you must defeat BOTH bosses in one go without resetting the world otherwise the defeated one will respawn rather than remain dead. Prepare your resources and plans ahead of time for this.

At 95% reductions after bubble + other buffs and talisman it does nearly 300 damage still. This means, unmitigated at 0% damage negation, it would do nearly 6,000 damage. I noticed it due to the fact that when I ran with Bubble I didn't get dented but slammed still by hit attack and did some more testing. I'm leaning more towards this being a glitch as this simply seems absurd.

Literally down to zero flasks, zero FP, and almost no HP. We stood there, looking at each other for a second and I charged in and got the first swing. The Forbidden Lands one? Trying to maneuver without falling off a cliff and Vulgar Militia hooting around? Took way more tries and in the end he got stuck - so I blasted him and didn't feel sorry.
