Poise

Type Base Stat
Effect The degree to which you can resist collapsing under enemy attacks

Poise is a Base Stat in Elden Ring. Poise can be increased by wearing armor. It can also be raised by various other equipment, ashes of war, Wondrous Physick combinations, sorceries, incantations, and consumables.

Poise Information

Poise determines resistance to flinching or staggering from enemy attacks. Players often casually refer to 'Poise' and 'Stance' as different terms, but that's technically the same mechanic.

Poise HP

  • In Elden Ring, poise works based off an invisible "poise HP bar," which is based off the visible poise stat. For simplicity's sake, the poise value displayed in that stats screen will represent your poise HP.
  • When your poise HP bar reaches 0 after being hit, you are staggered and your poise resets back to your max poise HP.
  • It's worth noting that if your poise HP bar is low and you get hit by a high poise damaging attack, your next health bar will not be tolled. For example, let's say your total poise HP is 51 and you get hit by a 50 poise damage attack. Your poise HP is now 1, and if you get hit by the same attack, the 49 spare poise damage WILL NOT wrap around to your next poise HP bar. Instead of leaving you with 2 poise HP the stagger effect refreshes your poise and you will be left with your total poise HP of 51 again.
  • In PvE, enemies see their poise HP regenerate after 6-15 seconds without taking a hit. It depends on how much poise the enemy has (80 poise=6 sec, 200 poise=15 sec).

Damage Level

  • DamageLevel is the games parameters that determine level of hitstun, and although this isn't related directly to poise it is often used in tangent with a poise break.

Don't know how helpful this will be, but I recently did someone research and thought I would share it. You will need to wear the Bull-Goat's Talisman for both sets to work.

The lightest possible armor set with 101 poise is the Crucible (Axe or Tree) Helm, Unaltered Tree Sentinel Armor, Tree Sentinel Greaves, and the Vulgar Militia Gauntlets, Blue Silver Bracelets, Champion Bracers, Godskin Apostle Bracelets, or the Preceptor's Gloves. This weighs a total of 39.3 Miyazakis.

The lightest possible armor set with 51 poise is the Aristocrat Headband, Altered Fingerprint Armor, Battlemage Manchettes, and Warrior Greaves. This weighs a total of 17.1 Miyazakis.

poise will always be a touchy subject because of the weapons it favors between hyper armor and passive or none at all. you will never get a discerning or balanced viewpoint on it and any purpose poise intended to fill will be hated by weapon users that it makes life more difficult for. i feel like there are better ways than what we have and had in the past. i think thie biggest issue with passive poise is that not building poise didn't reward you, older armored core rewarded light builds with speed to dance around heavies, but in this game the weight is only good for getting bloodhound step light which does nothing for you if you are in the middle of an attack especially if the poise enemy has fast weapons. it does help get you out of certain vortexes but usually just turns into wasting time spamming roll. if theu gave light loads something else, either faster running acceleration, faster cancle windows for rolling ect. then skill could render poise stacking a risk. i think what im saying is, poise and hyper armor are bandaids to a bigger issue and i think that should be talked about

Suggestion: place the PVE values before the PVP ones - just reverse the listed order.

Not everyone plays PVP, but everyone engages with PVE at some point and it's the information that new players will look for first, so it would make sense to have that listed first instead of having to scroll past a ton of info on PVP to get to the few lines on PVE, as that section is drastically shorter.

"Players often casually refer to 'Poise' and 'Stance' as different terms, but that's technically the same mechanic."
it literally isn't, the loading screen/tutorial popup explicitly says STANCE BREAKING. i don't care what your cheat engine table says.

notice how when you hit malenia with a greatsword R1, you interrupt her attack. that's POISE. you can critically hit her by attacking her enough; that's STANCE. two completely different mechanics. how can poise and stance be the same thing if they are both active and doing different things at the same time?

Delicious, delicious salty tears in the comment section.

If you want to use the gameplay mechanic that favours tanks, then build a mother****ing *tank*. AND COMMIT.
Level up that vigor and endurance, equip heavy armor and defensive talismans. Eat those prawns, forgo shields altogether for colossal weapons: your ARMOR is your defense. But most especially, learn WHEN to commit for a heavy charged attack. ALWAYS remember that you can STILL dodge-roll out of PVE attacks you must still respect, and that two-handing your massive weapon STILL LETS YOU BLOCK TO REDUCE DAMAGE. So what if it's not a 100% reduction? You can afford to sacrifice health cut down with that vigor stat, bull-goat armor and dragoncrest greatshield talisman if you actually bother to build a ****ing TANK. Can these naked wretches say the same?

Otherwise just be a moonveil or RoB kiddie and hush.

I think, from reading these comments, and the whole poise debacle in DS3 and seeing how Elden Ring removed passive poise in favor of a hyper armor system...
I think it's fair to say that, at the least, there should be different poise levels for PvP and PvE. Having the same numbers for both has huge problems, mostly the fact that light armors are basically irrelevant since they don't have damage negation or poise needed to trade, and thus severely limits what kind of armors you'll use in the story and against players. I personally think passive poise should absolutely exist in PvE; getting staggered in 2 or 3 hits by a skinny noble while you have medium armors just doesn't make sense and is annoying.

I hate that you can't reach 101 poise without wasting a talisman slot to get it. Why in the world doesn't at least the bull-goat set give 101? No, it gives exactly 100 ofc. Almost like it was done this way to mock the players. Really hope the DLC will bring better armor with more poise too!

                  • Anonymous

It really angers me that all pve enemies have a poise damage variable, yet this is always the same number with a few exceptions, this is why 50 poise does absolutely nothing and 51 suddenly blocks most of the game attacks. They should have given actual unique values to that variable instead of 50 for half of the creatures in this game

                    • Anonymous

passive poise only really serves to augment weapons' hyperarmor, so unless you're using a big weapon or spell like gavel of haima, its trash

                      • Anonymous

I really wish armor sets like the champion set and gladiator sets had high poise despite their relatively low weight and defense. by and large, all fromsoft armor scales all attributes up with weight, and only minor differences and peculiarities exist besides. more weight, more defense, more weight more poise, more weight more status resistance. high poise values in particular are very strictly confined to heavy armors, but being able to be a "berserker" with high poise but low defense would be an interesting new design opportunity - i will get hit, and it will hurt, but not as much as my hit will hurt you

                        • Anonymous

I want passive poise back. But I do know poise stacking is a problem problem with light and fast weapons. I'd just wish they could find a way to balance it.
Like bring passive poise back, BUT make it so the amount of passive poise is also determined by the weapon type you are using. For example if your having a rapier equipped, you only get to use idkm 20 poise of your full Bullgoat set. But if you have an ultra great sword equipped you get to use all of it.

                          • Anonymous

Poise is borderline useless in Elden Ring. There are only 25 sets that have enough poise to not be staggered by small weapons, which is 20% of all sets. They should make it so 25 poise is enough to not be staggered by daggers or they should increase poise on a lot of armours. They could've given poise increases to a stat like vigor or endurance.

Anyone know if Torrent have own poise or scales with yours? Sometimes he gets stun locked while my tarnished was fine from same enemy.

                              • Anonymous

I feel like the hyper armor and big weapons was a solid change, but they overdid it giving every r1 added poise. I think the poise modifier on attacks should be a multiplier applied before a small flat bonus. That way heavier armor set ups would receive far more significant bonuses than light armor would, but light weapons would still be able to trade with light armor.

They did the right thing poise should only contribute to hyper armor for slow big strength weapons and nothing more.

These dullards defending this idiotic hyper armor as if ds3 were any better than elden ring was. Ds3 got the death it deserved and this game will follow suit if they don't revert this failure of a poise system. If you liked ds3 so badly you should have fkin stayed there.

Hyper armor was a mistake. I miss passive poise. Spacing doesn't matter so much as timing your attacks in a latency based game, which ruins the consistency of pvp to begin with. I seriously pray every day that once the DLC comes out Passive Poise makes a comeback. It was genuinely perfect before but now it's just a roll-fest, almost the way Ds3 was at its worst.

                                      • Anonymous

Without passive poise, how long will it be before the likes of the antspur rapier ruins any pvp instance just like murky did in ds3 (or even worse than murky, since the rapier isn't limited to quickstep)? What counter do the likes of mohgwyn spear or hand of malenia have, now that these unavoidable weapons cannot be interrupted?

And before you mention skill, 1: that has not been an existant thing since these brainless gankers were born. 2: half-a$$ed pvp systems ain't nobody's business.

everyone complaining that "heavy armor is useless now"; the same thing was said of DS3, which has *no* poise except during hyper armor frames. and what do people wear in DS3, to this day? heavy armor with optimized poise breakpoints. poise is such an insane advantage that it *has* to be strictly limited. you hit me for 40% damage, I hit you for 100% and get a guaranteed second attack or combo? yeah. heavy armor is still the best weapon in the game.

                                          • Anonymous

Make passive poise information a little more transparent. Implement a red/yellow/green indicator for the poise value on the character sheet. So a player can look at the number and generally speaking see that red means more attacks will stagger, yellow less, green the least. So if the first break point is 51 poise, make that where the color changes from red to yellow. And if the next break point is 81 or 101, make that where the color changes from yellow to green. Not that complicated, right?

                                            • Anonymous

1.10 has been absolutely miserable. Tying poise to weapons instead of armor and giving all hyper armor a 60% abs boost has been absurd. This actually nerfs collosals and mathematically buffs Barrier of gold and blue feather etc. And this change doesn’t solve the issue of PS weapons having double the damage of collosas and great swords on trades. PS does double damage while 2h takes 60% less damage… simple math before you add that PS weapons actually do Tripple damage because they hit 3 times total usually before the stun registers. They nerfed BoG only cause they knew 60% hyper armor + 60% BoG would be silly but it’s now 80% when combined with ranged hyper armor options AND another 60% more in blue feather… and I happily add another +30% with Holy Ground. Great when I’m fighting a mage, miserable when I’m fighting a G9 enthusiast whose r1s can now hyper armor great hammers and all my casts are just free jump attacks. I now do half damage to meta slaves and take double damage from moonveil :( invasions are impossible, my favorite weapon, mace and straight sword are useless, great mace can’t poise break great swords, and my collosal builds still ray L2 trades…

Page is woefully outdated. Going to list what I can for the newbies. This effects pvp only. PvE breakpoint is still 51 for most things.
Almost all weapons deal > 133 poise damage now, meaning no more neutral hyperarmor. Variant weapons have variable numbers like Serpentbone Katana R2.

Only TB, whips, spears, rapiers, daggers, claws can be neutral poised anymore at extremely high numbers. Usually only if 1H'd R1's.
I may be a little inaccurate here, but hyper armor only affects these normal attacks: Ham/flail 1H (R2only), Ham/flail 2H, GS/GA/GH/CGS 2H, all colossals
As you can see poise damage numbers are high, but during hyper armor you have 2x poise. Bullgoat talisman also adds incoming poise damage reduction.
With BGT: multiply incoming poise by .375. Without BGT, multiply by .5. That's how much poise you need to have to shrug the blow.
During hyper armor you also have added poise based on weapon: running R1's have .75 times the normal poise bonus. Charged R2's have 2 times. You can add all of these to your sheet poise to calculate if you beat the poise damage.
                                                colossal swords: 1H - 90, 2H - 90
                                                colossal non-swords: 99, 99
                                                CGS/GS/GA: 2H only - 59
                                                GH: 2H only - 77
                                                Ham/Flail - 1H R2 only - 52, 2H - 52

E.G - I want to tank PSS using Golem Halberd. 162*.5 = 81. I don't need any armor or bullgoat's because I get 99 free poise. Now GS is annoying me: 264(2H) *.5 = 132. Beats my 99. Try BGT, 264 * .375 = 99. I will have to resort to wearing armor after all, as I need to be higher than that number.

                                                • Passive poise in PvP is weird to me because on one hand, it made heavy attacks have a real place against poise monsters, plus they weren't very smart when they got staggered, and you could punish them accordingly. However, I do think it's a bit silly that you are rewarded for knowing numbers better, because then you end up with a situation like poised up powerstanced straight swords, or spears, or great spears, etc.

Patch 1.10 heavily nerfed passive poise in PvP only, and that's fine to me because as someone who invades a decent amount, it didn't really matter how much poise I had, 750 HP damage is 750 HP damage. My only wish is for heavy attacks on lighter weapons to have their poise damage increased so that they're a more reliable tool for breaking hyper armor because it's kinda nutty this patch.

Basically, 1.10 patch means that passive poise stock is down, invest in hyper armor

daggers are in the list, but claws and fist weapons are not.
would be nice to see how much poise dmg a weapon actually does

People said poise neft is good for fashion but it quite the opposite. You quite literally reduce the viability of all good looking armor and only the most hideous one are viable.

I guess I'm just surprised by this move because so much time has passed. However, considering it looks like the community is happy about it for the most part, it's kinda cool to see they are still making significant changes, and only to one side of the spectrum. Right on, FS. I wonder what the DLC has in store for us, it's been pretty much a news blackout, just like what they did with the initial release. I wonder if it's on purpose, or if it's like total chaos in development, like people screaming and babies regularly on fire in the office, fist fights with broken glass and stuff like that. What do you guys think?

Alright, so i played a bunch with each of my builds on the 1.10 patch and honestly, this patch has only made poise stronger. Literally two hand a great sword and even at like 70ish you can straight up eat greatswords on reaction with a heavy trade, hell even 41-45 with a greatsword can easily trade standard weapons. This patch has broken poise yes, but not in a way of making it useless, rather it made it a monster to deal with in terms of trading, and makes it even more of a hard counter to annoying dual spears and powerstance standard weapons in general. I honestly think 1.09 did it better with greatswords staggering everything as it gave them a place in the game's "meta." Now it's just made it R1 spam. R2 spam, and even more L2 spam due to abusing hyper armour. Honestly loving it, but i still think 1.10 was a massive step backwards in terms of balancing poise as it feels too easy killing other players by just two handing a weapon.

TLDR: 1.10 broke poise balancing, but it made it op, not nerfed it into the ground

The mausoleum soldiers surcoat and legs give extra poise over other soldeier armor. So a decent early game mixed set is the mausoleum soldiers set and the great helm for 51, it's lighter than the knights set (and looks good to boot). The masouleum knight set has higher poise than other knights sets and it too looks good with the great helm.

Alright, so apparently we're back to Active Poise. I just have one concern. Did they fix the nonsense of only heavy weapons having hyper-armor frames? Because while I can see the benefits of Active Poise, in DS3 only greatswords and higher could actually use it because of how it and hyper-armor frames worked. This resulted in a knight in heavy armor being slapped silly if he had a longsword but suddenly having poise when he pulled out a claymore. Smaller weapons definitely should have less hyper-armor "health" than larger weapons but they shouldn't have zero.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

I don't understand this decision. The game has been out for 18 months and they went from a DS1 system that players had pretty widely praised, and instead totally switched it around to the DS3 system? DS3 is one of my favorite games of all time but still, this is odd. I just don't understand the logic. Or maybe I am just sore because my first two builds were a mage and dex based characters and this blows my plans for a third tanky strength based character. Mind you, I am not a PvP guy, only co-op, when I play PvP its because I was invaded. How does the dueling community see this?

                                                                              • Anonymous

I thought I was done with the game until the DLC came out. As of patch 1.10, I’m playing it again and loving it after months away. Poise just absolutely ruined the PvP in this game. It made so many weapons entirely useless after early game since every player could just poise through them with just average poise. And I had to waste an entire talisman slot just for Bull-Goat Talisman since not using it was an active handicap. Now we’re back to DS3 poise, boys! The PvP is about skill again and my mind isn’t constantly thinking about and be frustrated by one stat. Best update ever. Thanks, From!

Most of the damn time in a bunch of other games, a lil poke from a switchblade will cancel out your rocket propelled sledgehammer or 5 ton axe, but using certain things like the stamp AOW and taking a hit to trade an eye for a head is awesome, and it prevents the castes weapon from becoming the meta automatically.
That’s another thing that the ashes of war do… and the way status effect buildup works as well.

While the first r1 hit will almost always stagger, you can still poise through the follow-ups. This means that if get hit, you can trade if they r1 spam.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

With poise being completely reworked again in the latest patch, I think the only real use of passive poise is if you don’t want to get staggered by arrows and throwing daggers, which, let’s be real, if every arrow staggered you it would be real annoying to deal with.

I have a sort of soft spot for passive poise, because heavy attack on light weapons like straight swords and daggers actually had a purpose in breaking poise, and 90% of the time poised up dudes were extremely dumb. However, I also don’t like the idea of being rewarded for knowing numbers better. It’s kinda why Dark Souls 1 is infamously known as the backstab game, because if you hit a poised up opponent who knew what they were doing, chances are you got rewarded by getting backstabbed about it and dying.

Keep in mind I’m talking purely from a PvP perspective. In PvE it’s fine.

I was dual wielding flails, and my opponent, who used half of the bullgoat set, managed to poise through the entire l1 chain. Having passive hyperarmor is not a good mechanic.

Otherwise, you'll be getting bullied by 2H R1 rapier BHS try-hards and getting blendered by 1H R1 SS/CS/Katana/Axe/Spear spamming Wi-Fi warriors. 76 poise is needed to tank 2H R1 attacks of all aforementioned classes. 101 poise to tank storm stomp and flaming strike AOWs. 76 is my favorite because equipping the bullgoat talisman then gets you to 101.

There's a reason why all the tryhards wear the Scaled Set and use the Bull-Goat Talisman, or even why they wore Lapp's Set in Dark Souls 3. Poise works, always has worked, and it has been completely broken since its inception.

The reason is simple. If you look at actual fighting games, big bodies usually get one or two hits of armor on cerain slow attacks. They don't get them on their entire moveset. That would be ridiculous. So how utterly insane is it, then, that in every Miyazaki Souls game except Dark Souls 3, heavy armor gives you freedom from being staggered from a neutral position, that it grants you a massive advantage against certain weapons for merely existing in the arena? Not for getting a read, not for a punish - just for standing there.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

If you hate playing against this mechanic, then try scythes or halberds. almost nobody has the poise to withstand these weapons. Scythes also work very well against shield users.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Poise is just so stupidly designed. I can literally stab someone through the guts with a spear, and they just shrug it off and continue their r1 combo. it just feels wrong that i can r1 spam someone to death because my poise is higher than what their weapon can dish out.

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Passive poise is just a terrible mechanic. Passive poise on DS1 was fine because the PVP was back stab focused. In this game, if your opponent has high poise, it can just counter the weapon you’re using entirely. Just terrible. DS3 did poise the best.

Heavy armor provides high poise, making you less likely to recoil from enemy attacks. Wielding a heavy weapon with two hands may also provide similar effects.
