PvP or Player versus Player for Elden Ring is an Online feature where players can challenge and fight other players. Players may only enter PvP by two means: one is by invading another player who is in a co-op session (or being invaded by other players), and the other is by being invited into another player's world via a PvP summon item. This page contains information regarding the guidelines, various mechanics for the PvP combat system.

Invasions in Elden Ring

Invasions still occur during single-player gameplay. They are initiated by NPC Invaders and function identically to PvP invasions. However, these invasions often bear relation to Elden Ring's story and occur only at specific Locations.

See our Summon Range Calculator to figure out how to matchmake for PvP sessions.

How do I Start the Invasion in Elden Ring?

In order to engage in any kind of Multiplayer activity, players will need to obtain a multiplayer item. These items are usually consumable. The Festering Bloody Finger is a consumable item that can be purchased and is a good example of an item that will allow you to attempt to invade another player's world as a Bloody Finger. The Bloody Finger is a nonconsumable version of this item. PvP Summoning signs can also be put down with a Duelist's Furled Finger to gain the chance to be summoned by other players in a competitive multiplayer interaction. The sign must be located by another player in the same location within their game. Each Multiplayer item has their own uses and effects. Each of them can be found below.

How do I get out of an Elden Ring Invasion?

A host of Finger can choose a summoned player and send the back to their world with a Finger Severer. This can also be used when you have been summoned to another player's world to return to your own world.

Can Invaders kill Bosses Elden ring?

Once in a successful invasion, as an invader you will not be attacked by any AI enemies you come across. You also won't be able to to go through any Boss Fog Gates to interact with  any Bosses. However those with the White Cipher Ring can use this item to summon help from other players when being invaded by a Bloody Finger which is the complementing item to the Blue Cipher Ring which allows you to be summoned by those with a White Cipher Ring. For Boss help, you can Use a Furcalling Finger Remedy to locate any summon signs in the area near these Boss gates. Summoning players this way will allow them to player with you cooperatively.

Special PvP Scaling

As of Patch 1.07, some Weapons, Skills and Magic Spells have unique scaling that only applies when playing vs another player. This scaling does not affect cooperative multiplayer or solo play, and is used to balance PvP independently from PvE.

PvP Exclusive balance adjustments

Do I have to invade in Elden Ring?

Invasions are an optional multiplayer feature. Players who prefer to play the game solo can choose to remain solo by not interacting with any multiplayer items even while connected to the internet. However, if you do choose to open your game to incoming aid from friends, you will be also opening your game to foreign invaders. The choice is still up to each player. Aside from multiplayer invasions, players will encounter in game NPC Invaders as Enemies in the game and will get a chance to invade other NPCs are part of different questlines.

How do I help with the Boss fight in Elden Ring?

If you wish to be summoned to help you in put your summoning sign with the Tarnished's Furled Finger to be able as a cooperator and help with the objective of defeating the area boss of the world to which you were summoned.

§PVP Rewards in Elden Ring

Defeating an opponent in PvP will reward the player with Runes. The amount of Runes is a fixed amount depending on the defeated opponent's Level; It is a percentage of that player's most-recent leveling cost (eg. a level 50 player drops some % of the cost of leveling up from level 49 to 50). However, the percentage awarded varies depending on the perspective of the player and the type of multiplayer being conducted.

I understand why getting invaded can be frustrating, even more if you're noob but Elden Ring is game that everyone should be able to finish alone without "buddy". Play offline and you'll not be invaded or git good and stop crying how bad you are. Invaders or ping, if you have skill non of that matter. Easy

      • Anonymous

for the sage of pvp community , please add Ping check option.
no more 300+ ping allow to join , no more get hit now but get pain later.
no more un-animate sliding character , no more teleport backstab.
it's not fun for both side.

I decided to try my dex character with low poise in the arena and kept getting matched up with hyper aggressive poise players, I got mad then switched to MY poise monster and no longer had any issues.
          It felt good, really-really good.

          • Anonymous

I wish there was more buffs you could use on pve as an invader that aren't gated behind being a faith build. Making a 3v1 more even by souping up nearby enemies is so awesome when it works

The best fun you can have in Elden Ring PvP is as followed:
Record yourself dying in hilarious ways.
Record yourself defeating your opponent in hilarious ways.
Take scenic snapshots of your character via Gesture emojis.
Post your footages on to social media platforms.
              Share your Character Creation ideas.
Share your Build stats and how to improve it for PvP.

Invaders need to embrace the fact that they are meant to be outnumbered and at a disadvantage instead of crying about how it’s unfair. Just go to the Colosseum for fair duels.

Dude imagine how much of a nerd u gotta be to engage in pvp in a souls game lol just read some comments here...seamless bros stay winning

                  • Anonymous

Some MAIDENLESS NUMBSKULL used a weapon with BLEED when i invaded them, utter VIRGIN behavior. Some FESCES-EATING DINGUS threw something at me and i was poisoned INSTANTLY, they must have been hacking, there's NO other explanation!!!! Also, Some Total DOUCHEWAD used DOUBLE SLASH and i somehow died to it, so I'm going to make an EDUCATESD GUES and say that it's WAY TOO OVERPOWEIRED, and anyone who uses it would rather INSTAKILL all the BOSSES instead of acgtually PLAYING THE GAME!!!!!!!!

                    • ER PvP is weirdly my favorite Souls pvp despite the multiplayer systems being objectively inferior to the past games (except maybe OG Demon's Souls).

Maybe it's the fact that you can make literally anything work in Elden Ring, maybe it's the first time I actually tried magic in a souls game (and loved it), maybe the time to kill is much faster and less mind-numbingly long, idk why but I love this game

Obviously there are a lot of stuff that needs some tweaking, but it's still been really really fun to me, even two years in

when im invading am i supposed to fight the other invaders? they start fighting me a lot of the time i thought we were on the same team?

                        • Anonymous

Can you heal world enemies when you invade? I have seen cleanrot knights can buff you so that wouldn’t surprise me

                          • Anonymous

so apparently u lose runes if u die while invading? just lost over 2 mil to that. i just did not expect that

Bring gravelording back. Prioritize people that already summoned phantoms and bloat their world with sanguine nobles. It's the only possible solution at this point.

Anyone who goes to this page to say invasions are "toxic" ... hate to say it, I really do, actually. It pains me inside, knowing how annoying it is to hear. But goddamn you people need to stop being garbage and git gud you ****ing scrubs, I miss when soulsbourne wasn't infested with people who think it's Far Cry for ****'s sake. There isn't solo PVE and Coop PVE, there is solo PVE and multiplayer. You want to play with people through the game, you're gonna play against people through the game. A deliberate design choice that has remained the same for longer than a decade.

I’ve done all invasion level brackets but the variety of opponents you get at 139 max upgrade is my favorite.

Contrary to what folks think, twinking can still be nasty, you just gotta nerf overleveled phantoms by invading at level RL1-5 and not RL20-30. Get yourself a passive health regen build, volcano pots, a thunderbolt dagger for the occasional runners and you won't even need to rely on meme weapons or duped items. Just treat those fights as Spear church invasions and you'll never lose.

good lord invading on PC is misery. every single person is just getting carried through the game by their stupid level 700 wizard friends but ALSO get a blue within seconds of being invaded. get staggered by a stray spell, instantly take a double colossal jumping L1 and die. those content creators on PS5 have it fkn easy and they know it. no radahns with brass shields and weapons they dont meet the reqs for on PC. nope, for everyone of those on PS5, PC gets someone who has glitched themselves out of bounds to farm runes, two liurnia ganks, and an instant deathblight cheater.

DS1: dark bead, and chaos infusion/furysword scaling off humanity instead of your actual level, made twinking way too easy and unfair
DS2: soul memory lmao you could invade forest of fallen giants or heide's with a +10 poison weapon
DS3: the tamest twinking has been, but dark hand and prisoner's chain were still completely unfair to new players
ER: go ahead and invade stormveil with endgame armor, maxed flasks, unlimited meat dumplings golem arrows and star shards because it wont matter when the max level phantom takes 53 damage from you, poises through it and hits you with moonveil L2R2, killing you instantly

Is there a way to guarantee you end up matched with somebody equal to your level? Wouldn't wanna screw over lower level characters

i guess tumblebuffing is back somehow? two invaders in a row. one made his magma whip candlestick (L2 lava pools included) inflict sleep and another made both his greatbow rain of arrows and his spinning slash twinblade do frost

                                              • Anonymous

Souls PvP boomer here (lol imagine) and I have not touched this game in almost 2 years (I quit a few months after its release as I was pretty letdown with the game) and ngl, I'm kind of disappointed this PvP never really improved. I thought about returning with the announcement of the DLC and kind of coped that the DLC would fix a lot of things or increase the PvP player limit. Doesn't seem like that is the case. Shame! Cannot believe I kinda miss dealing with the sweaty unscaled bow glitching gankers from Dark Souls 3. Any tryhard PvPers reading this tho, just play a different game my man. FromSoft has rolled over for the majority and the casual players. Here on out these games are just going to keep getting easier and more watered down and favored for people not like yourself. Save yourself the trouble my fellow red friend. Just read the comments below of the bad players complaining about invaders.

These people should have seen the Undead Burg twinks in DS1 and the Scraping Spear/Stormruler invaders from Demons Souls if they think they have it hard in this comically easy game...

Do you get runes for helping someone beat a boss, one time i helped a rando kill the fire giant and i swear i got some runes for it not like a lob but some. Am just crazy?

                                                  • Anonymous

Just got invaded in Leyndell by a bull goat tryhard who immediately popped radiant baldachin's blessing and tried to crouch poke me with serpent hunter.

Another red and blue spawned in and ganked him to death, red bro dropped the blue bro something and severed.

                                                    That's cool

There’s really no such thing as a meta PVP in Elden Ring, given the amount of Weapon classes, infusions and Ash of Wars, that you can build from scratch. Whether it be roped greases, perfumes or pots every small detail has a quirk that will outshine any player who rely on low-effort Moonveil or Rivers of Blood.

In the meantime: block every invader, activate white cypher ring, summon your max level bros and most important use the Seamless mod if you can! Good times.

Then the time runs out because they keep spamming the same spells but you can never get close to them before pointing down at you because they couldn’t kill you with there one brain cell spamming technique. Mages that use melee are fine though

                                                                        • Anonymous

If you like to invade you owe no apologies to the crybabies. Once in a great while I'll encounter a host worth sparing. Other than that, beat down, rinse , repeat. Also, I love the over level ganks early game. Farm them and it sets you up with more runes and rune srcs you will ever need to enjoy rest of game . Pvp dies out predominantly anyway after level 30 til 125. So have fun, get ready to lose some , and ignore the rest of the bs or complainers. There are so many great early game weapons to use too.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I want every ganker and offline-only baby to understand that invasion is a part of these games for a reason. A good reason. Yes it is frustrating sometimes. Yes you will get angry at the BS some (most) invaders do. Twinks and laglords are never fun. I used to only ever go through Farron Swamp offline because I hated getting invaded. But you know what happens when you keep getting invaded? Eventually, once, maybe only by luck, you will win. You will beat the invader. And it will feel really good. You'll be more confident the next time. And with enough time you'll start to win more than you lose and maybe even have fun doing it. It's the same challenge and learning curve as the PvE. Once upon a time, even the trolls in Limgrave were a serious threat to all of us. You keep fighting them, and you learn, and then they aren't scary anymore. Don't hide behind your level 700 buddy(ies). Don't pull the ethernet cord. Don't jump off a cliff. Don't play offline. Just try. Please. You might be surprised.

                                                                            • Anonymous

I can fight 3 people and win in most scenarios, but it just isn’t the same when you invade players that have a sense of humor and fun vs those who are clearly rabid. I get that I am the bad guy to you, but the people that wait for invaders in one spot just to spam as many spells as possible and resummon when one dies are the bad guys to me. But the cool guys are cool keep being cool cool guys. Cool. Dislike if you agree.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Go play in the arena, with the other special kids. Or is it 'cause you tried but couldn't beat anyone so you want to stomp on noobs? :'(

                                                                                • Anonymous

Just try to practice doing it. It is very difficult to do. They are best players in the souls series gaming community.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Here is why pvp sucks. before level 30 is where action is .Some people like to invade. They invade. 75% of hosts have full twinked gear, gank, and max level twink helpers. Those phantoms get downscaled, but still have way too much advantage. So invaders Twink too. Then they actually invade the other 25% casual host player who hate pvp but summon their friends. They get slaughtered. So basically it's a circle of pain because of the summoned max level phantom scenario. Seems apparent little time is spent by the devs in the pvp area anymore. They got pve figured out and that is where they concentrate. If they change pvp mechanics, some group of players will get pissed off. To fix this, they must fix the max level phantom summoning scenario. But they are probably some of the most dedicated players to the game long term . I just think it is what it is and little adjustments are going to be made. If they turn off pvp. Their most dedicated core players to this game will be lost.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Pvp is the same way, an easy version of it for a wider audience.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Host will probably go back, pick up their runes and summon again. A co-op player like me used to get annoyed until I stopped to think about it, especially when more than once the Host ends up summoning me again and we pick up like nothing had happened. I’ve met some nice, honorable invaders; I met invaders who were formerly a Host or fellow summon; I even had a couple of times when prior-invaders summoned me. Sadly enough, these encounters are only memorable because they’re few and far between. Pokey powerstancers? Big AOE enjoyers? Copper pennies in a jar.
Yeah, you invaded us before we could go through Rykard’s gate or while we were fighting DTS. We’re equipped for PVE and you’re equipped for PVP. So you spammed a spell or weapon skill with mega AOE. Glad you finally saw some action that made your brain light up like a Christmas tree. Meanwhile, I put down my summon sign and now and then discard a few rune arcs because my storage is full and a pesky message reminds me that I can’t store anymore. Life goes on, and when PVP dies out as it eventually will because the system is flawed or because a good slice of the multiplayer community is dysfunctional, PVE enjoyers will continue to derive joy from this and other titles. Some might recall an unforgettable encounter with an invader (a good experience and a hostile invasion are not mutually exclusive), but I doubt anyone will be able to tell a dingusbingus from a bussybuster because they mostly wore the same armor, used the same weapon art, and celebrated in the same spastic way.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I’m going in with pockets empty of runes and a goofy-looking character, just to make a random Host’s day. Am I going to get ganked? Probably. Do I care? Nope.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Or it's some person who has like 2000+ hours, and play like they have parkinsons or are only passive (sometimes both, and occasionally, all of the above).

There's some (very few) honest invaders, when I find em I usually don't fight if the host isn't a noob. Love you guys

Other pvp problems aside, wonder how much pure blood knights medal kills mid level pvp as far as invasion frequency. It really dies mid level for me. My assumption is players use this when obtained about lvl 30. They go to moghs area, farm runes very easily and just add attributes to get to high level. Which will range them out of any mid level invader. I experience huge dropoff in invasions from about lvl 35 til 100+.

It would be messy, it would be chaotic, but i WOULD come back for that, instead of this hot mess very few bothers with.

The idea anyone would invade and not try hard is one of the most idiotic waste of time notions playing a game. I guess invading and just letting the other TEAM win would be fun for maybe the village idiot. Winning=fun. Hence why most invasions are gank situations against a 3 vs 1 with max level helpers. The host wants to win. The tryhard term was created by players who hate pvp mainly because they can't win a fight against red guy in spite of having every in-game advantage in the book. You must make a well-thought-out Build for PVP.
Then, understand how and what your Build needs to function properly for PVP.
The Build must have a main focus that's centered around Strength, Dexterity, Quality, Intelligence, Faith or Arcane.
Once you've decided on what Build you're trying to make, collect and max-out a ton of Weapons or Spell(s).
(Even weapons that might not immediately interest you.)
Having a wide variety of weapons is important for the different scenarios you may run into, during invasions.
Don't forget about Infusions, Ash of War, weapon skills and Talismans.
You only need 54 to 60 Vigor.
Finally equip Flask(s) to Pouch and use the quick bar for consumable items.
I hope this helps you and anyone who didn't what to do.

Then beat in 2 seconds by max level helpers at every level of the game in 3 vs 1 scenario. This game has effectively destroyed pvp with terrible design and pvp gameplay. Play for pve then move on. Do not waste time with it. Seriously. Just read through these threads . Aside from people who don't invade anyway , they are all valid complaints. They might as well get rid of it as they obviously are not going to fix or change anything now or in dlc.

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

It's a little fun very early. Laser beams , magic bombs, and max level phantom l2 after that. You do not have a chance. Very boring to boot.

                                                                                                                              • Anonymous

I always wonder, why tf fromsoftware should ever listen to constantly complaining, hyper optimal pvp players that always make their setups through duping or evil engine, thereby violating the game rules? They always be suffering, they're always crying how trash the pvp is, and they will do it after dlc comes out.

Ok, well, if invading is this unfair I have to be unfair back. I will play through leveling and upgrading as little as possible so I can have more talismans, better flasks, and better physick tears than the host. Ill have ashes of war, affinities, and special weapons they shouldn't have access to. Maybe thats twinking but at least I'm not having someone drop them for me or using cheat engine.

As an invader you can only win with instant kills like ledge knocks, high level magic or L2 cheese and even then only against very unskilled players.

I'm the Tarnished who needs to run around Elden Ring with an AoW that does a lot of damage, pray to kill one in 3x1.. then face a 2x1.. and then 1x1 finally.. apart from the fact that most invasions are high levels with spam spells/skills.. I'M HAVING SO MUCH FUN! stop this mimimimimimi! you're just another cursed Tarnished! Brazil says hello.

Insane burst damage is kinda the only real tool an invader has against a group of 3 in a vacuum. As much as I dislike the non-viability of tank characters for pvp, it makes total sense.

                                                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Gamers who say that using cheat engine/other hacking tools for pvp is justified because of numerous ganks and twinked hosts with their OL phantoms must understand that these abominations also use cheat engine and wouldn't exist in the first place if not for it. But that's doesn't matter anyways, we've crossed the point of no return long ago and devs can't do anything about offline save manipulation.

Building a good pvp character is just like building a trading card deck. Your choice in weapons, Ash of War, spells and talismans must be built around a certain theme to make truly effective. But be careful, some equipment work well together but others may detract or be counterintuitive.
Two or more weapons can be of the exact same class but have different R2 attacks (standing/running/jumping). Utilize them all, not just L2.
It doesn't hurt to find and collect every Sorcery/ Incantation/ Consumable you need, since some can even be used in combos or setups.
Remember to only play to the strengths of your Build (Strength/Dexterity/Quality/Intelligence/Faith/Arcane).
Reverse backstep attack(s) can give you an edge.
