Runebear Combat information

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Runebear Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Runebear:

  • Use the Lone Wolf Ashes
  • If you see the Runebear winding up for his grab, hug his left leg and roll with it.
  • Stay close to the Runebear and roll into its attacks

Melee Users

Keep to the Belly: Try to stay underneath the Runebear. Dodge through its attacks and attack back as hard as you can, dodging forward whenever it swings or rises on its hind legs. Most of its attacks will pass over you, giving you plenty of time to deal damage. Blocking is risky since its attacks do massive Stamina damage.

Break its Stance: Although the Runebear has relatively high Stance, once it breaks it'll be knocked out for long enough to get in a few attacks and a critical hit. This may make it worthwhile to use charged heavy attacks, jump attacks, or other means of dealing lots of stance damage.

Magic and Ranged Users

Since the Runebear is safest up close, your best bet as a spellcaster is to use short-range spells and follow the same strategy as melee players. Bow users who are unwilling to switch to melee will have quite a challenge. Use a Shortbow for its attack speed and fire arrows at point-blank range.

Runebear Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Claw Maul Raises its claw and slashes it forward. This attack has a deceptively large hitbox and excellent tracking If you're underneath the Runebear, this attack will miss. Otherwise, dodge in when the paw reaches the top its arc
Smash Rises briefly onto its hind legs with its left paw raised, then slams it into the ground This attack has limited range, so back away or move around the back of the Runebear
Bite The bear opens its mouth and lunges forward Roll into the bear, trying to end up in the safer area underneath it
Lunge Leaps through the air towards its target, covering a lot of distance Roll into the bear, trying to end up in the safer area underneath it
Charge Ducks down and charges forward. This attack has nearly no windup and covers a significant distance.  This is the most unpredictable attack. Once you see the bear turn around, prepare to dodge to the sides, otherwise try and block.
Double Paw Smash Rises onto its hind legs with both paws raised, then slams them both into the ground creating a shockwave If you've got some distance, you can jump over the shockwave. Otherwise, roll in once its paws are level with its face
Bear Hug Rises onto its hind legs with its arms spread wide, walks forward a bit, and grabs you with both arms Roll once it's taken a few steps, or simply run away. If you get grabbed, mash buttons to free yourself quicker.
Beast's Roar The Runbear fires off a sonic projectile from its mouth. Commonly used at a distance Dodge or block the attack. If you're up close, it will use this attack less frequently.

Runebear Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • A bug may occur when the Runebear grabs the player. If they manage to escape by mashing, the boss may fall through the floor and instantly die.

Is it just me or the one in Caelid, when you get out from the Siofra Well, is a little different? It really feels like that one was tweaked to be 0.5 faster.

Maybe i’ve just fought rajang too many times in MHW but this dude was easy asf. Used square off on the +4 starting broadsword. That art of war is lowkey busted- does good damage and amazing stance damage. Focus on his arm movements, those will tell you when to roll into him. You can get a heavy Square Off on most of his openings, and you just need 3-4 for a crit.

I found runebears to be pretty ****ing difficult until I was told to start using charged heavies on them to break their stance and then riposte them. This seems like extremely stupid advice when you hear it, because you can probably recall many times where it feels like you barely have enough time to do regular R1s between their attacks, but then I actually tried to do it out of desperation (while also staying near their crotch at all times) and... my god. I am a certified bear hunter now. And honestly, I feel like this entire time Miyazaki was on his knees begging to us to try this because the goddamn Axe talisman is guarded by a runebear as a fairly big hint. Nowadays, I not only rarely die to them, I often only have to use 1, maybe 2 flask charges.

To be fair, I think the sudden charge attack they can do is bordering on unfair - and gives me flashbacks to Oceiros in DS3 - and also the riposte can sometimes be a little difficult to actually execute because they don't stay down long and you tend to fight them in uneven terrain in the wilderness. But even the Snowfields bear no longer fills me with dread to fight... if only there was a point to doing so.

Back in my prime I was able to take out all 3 at the pond back in Limgrave earlier than I ever thought I was capable of doing. Now I'm afraid that when I start playing when Shadow releases I'm going to suffer trying to do so again, amongst many others of this games ridiculously made enemies.

And what haunts me is that in all the faces of all the bears I discover no kinship, no understanding, no mercy. I see only the overwhelming indifference of nature. To me, there is no such thing as a secret world of the bears. And this blank stare speaks only of a half-bored interest in food.

              • Anonymous

Stay really close to their crotch area, only time they can hit you is with pounce or aoe if you roll correctly

god i hate these things, somehow i find malenia easier than them..

for anyone struggling, get a shortbow or black bow and cover it in rot arrows, then you can just block. attack recovery is long enough to regain some stamina before the next attack. yes, even doing this, i find malenia easier. the damn things are too fast!

Bad times agead when you stumble upon this boss so early in the game as an astrologer. There's no path back without losing your runes so you're screwed until you finally beat this thing that's randomly resistant to magic damage.

if you aren't scared when you see a giant hulking bear charging at you at 50 mph you are braver than Godfrey.

These are among the enemies in the game where strategies to kill em feels more like cheesing. Going standard melee combat is just tedious and ridiculously punishing. Som of their attacks have nearly no wind up and shreds you. They turn on a dime in a split second and have more HP than a some of bosses. Say things like "these aren't hard" etc is just cocky and silly imo. Yes i can take em head on but im not having fun trying to land 100 swings on a guy that kills me in 2 and leaves no breathing room. Though FROM has a knack for making even late game builds never feeling too OP. I guess you could call em a hubris check. A slap to the face to remind you ya aint so tough after all.

I get why people hate them but I honestly had no issue with them unless my camera bugs out when locking on. Grossly over exaggerated saying these are hard and extremely reddit.

Having over 3000 health and being that much of a c**t is obviously a big f**k you from the devs. The so called lesser rune bears are not much better.

there’s one of these in the consecrated snowfield that drops a larval tear and has more hp than malekith, what a travesty

I swear whenever I see a Runebear I hear a Wrestling gong ring somewhere and the words 'LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!" before getting bodied in a second.

My strategy for killing runebears is always the same. "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of Candy Land?"

i ended up killing him using the basic torch kale sells you, didn't have a slash weapon and lone wolves were useful at drawing aggro for half the fight. turns out even a torch is a good weapon to kill them.

                                                          For Consecrated Snowfield:

Most of the Runebears are in a cave or something similar and allow you to use ranged attacks and status effects to take them down. However, the one in Consecrated Snowfield leaves you no option but to go toe to toe or hit and run while mounted. I opted for the toe to toe fight on my bandit and used the following method: I used Rot Breath to quickly dispatch the 3 pilgrims (one of which spawns the Runebear). Once the Runebear spawns I hit him with a blast of Rot Breath. I then make use of the Flame of the Redmanes to break his guard. On the first break I hit him with the second blast of Rot Breath causing him to become afflicted. The rest of the fight is rolling under his belly and out between his hindlegs hitting him with the Flame of the Redmanes - scoring critical hits every 2 blasts. This was definitely a tough fight but very rewarding in the end.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I had a Runebear wavedash at me to land their grapple. Like actually scoot without motion 5-6 extra meters.

                                                            • Anonymous

The most annoying thing about Runebears is the attack where they abrutly charge at you and if you're behind or to the side of them, they instantly rotate before they charge at you. That nonsense is so god damn fast that I've yet to consistently dodge it and the worst is when they decide to spam that attack back to back. Once had a Runebear do that FOUR TIMES IN A ROW.

                                                              • Anonymous

I was fighting the Runebear in Earthbore Cave, and it grabbed me so I spammed buttons to get out of it, and I did. When I did however, the bear fell through the floor and died from being out of bounds. I don't know if this is a glitch that could work every time but it worked pretty well for me.

                                                                • Anonymous

Is there a page on the enemies that randomly turn into rune bears? I've run into two, one near the Agheel Lake South grace and one in the blizzard section of the consecrated snowfield. The second one was half buried in the snow, with some buddies trying to dig him out.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Here's what I did with the one in the Consecrated Snowfield: Get in CLOSE. Like under him and then roll around to behind him as he stands up to do the pounce attack. I got hit with his charge, but he missed with every other attack.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Not sure if it's just me, but on PS5, every single time I get grabbed by a runebear and mash out of it, they fall through the floor. This seems to be 100% consistent, even on relatively flat ground. In certain areas they even fall through onto another floor below, and remain there. You can even drop them into underground tombs if they are underneath.

It got to the point that my way of fighting runebears is to just make sure there'd be nothing underneath the terrain except the killplane, then let them grab me so I can mash out of it and have them fall.

                                                                      • Anonymous

P.S. I love the game but god damn some of the enemies suck ass to fight xD

                                                                          1. physick

                                                                          5. scarlet rot

                                                                          • Anonymous

Even if you dodge 2 attacks he relentlessly follows up, gives no opening to heal or riposte. Only times i beat this monster was cheesing it from some place he cant reach.

                                                                            • Anonymous

I read somewhere that the wolfman Blythe or whatever no longer speaks to you and is hostile if you kill runebears. Is there an exception for this boss?

                                                                              • Anonymous

Highly recommend fighting these on horseback when you can. High speed keeps you away from most of his high damage attacks

                                                                                • Anonymous

is it just me or is the runebear disguised that drops a larva tear in concentrated snowfield lower fps than anything else lmfao. I was trying to get the larval tear from it then when I fought it I noticed it was in like 10-20 fps while every5hing else was in 60. When he did that hug grab attack I could clearly see the difference lmfao.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Stay under it, get in as many hits as you can, and dodge towards its back if it stands up on its hind legs. The charge attack is borderline un-dodgeable, so always be prepared to heal a few times, but it rarely charges if you're close.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Rolling into the attacks made all the difference as well because you can find a spot under/close to him where his huge attacks won’t affect you as much.

If you get caught in its grab and you button mash out in order to take less damage, you'll pop out and he'll fall through the ground and fall into the killbox below the world. This has happened on almost every bear I've fought in the game since the most recent patch. I only figured this out because I'm terrible at dodging his grab. Don't know if it works on the dungeon boss in Earthbore, since I beat that dungeon before the patch.
