To add a bit of variety to the complaints here, this spell leaves you very vulnerable to damage when you cast it. You need a very large opening to cast it, which you could also use to simply do damage in other ways.
- Anonymous
im a little confused why people are complaining about the spell slot cost. how many spells are you using? even if i head out with a few utility spells, i need only like 3 different damaging spells at most Anyway... flipping through 8+ spells in combat is a disadvantage if anything
- Anonymous
Needs good timing and strategy to be consistently effective, but when it works, it WORKS. Good for dodging and countering low horizontal attacks, but there are definitely a lot of spells that have a way better price/performance ratio in terms of slot cost.
If I'm being honest, you're binding up 3 spell slots almost solely for an occasional, giant dopamine rush, but it's worth it if that's your thing, cause this is by far the prettiest spell in the game imo

100 impossibly stupid dipshits on every boss weapon/boss spell page on this website: duhhhhhh why doesn't this give me the poise, reach, damage output, and ancillary powers of this game's superboss???
I want to love this incantation, but I can't help but feel like it needs to be a little bit stronger for the three slots. Everything about it screams that it should be a powerful incantation, it has a high casting time, cool effects, you get it from the most memorable boss in the game, and it's one of 3 spells in the game that take 3 slots. But when I actually use it, it always seems lackluster. Especially since I'm comparing it to rotten breath, which can potentially inflict more rot than this while not locking me into one spot right in front of the enemies face for longer than it takes for them to recover from the spell.

Ffs, aeonia is not meant to deal outright damage, it is meant to apply a status effect. This spell is the best source of rot in the game, with 150 build-up on explosion & 50 on lingering hitbox and inflicting a stronger version of rot. It is NOT comet azur. Once again, it's purpose is to inflict status, not deal raw damage, that's why it doesn't deals a metric ****load of damage like some people in the thread want it to.
Caelid wasn't destroyed by the raw damage dealt by Scarlet Aeonia itself. It was slowly ravaged by the rot unleashed by it, eating away at life like a vicious plague.

Malenia using Scarlet Aeonia: Levitate 50 meters above the ground, untouchable and invulnerable, looks badass as ****, when the hit lands the ground, it knocks back everything like a ****ing nuclear bom.
Me as a Foul Tarnished using Scarlet Aeonia: Levitate 5 meters above the ground, touchable and vulnerable, looks shitty as ****, the Common Troll stomp me like a poor tiny roach and cancel me out of my spell -> no rot effect.
The ****ing Stone Of Gurranq incantation is 10 times better, faster cast time means dealing more DPS and high mobility, has one of the longest range I've ever seen (you need to aim without using the target-lock system in order to achieve that), you can literally land a ****ing rock at a group of enemies and they don't even have a clue where the hell does that rock comes from because it literally comes from the SKY, that's how long the range is, but this Scarlet Aeonia incantation is a big disappointment, enemies can stun, stagger you out of the spell and then no Scarlet Rot effect anymore, the cast time is too freaking long, it even takes up 3 slots and costs tons of FP !!! WTF ? The only good thing about this Scarlet Aeonia is the rot effect but hey the Ekzykes's Decay needs only 1 slot, faster casting time and just a little bit higher FP than this spell so this spell is awful, 2000 damage for 8 seconds and can't even apply the rot effect to enemies is no where as good as 900 damage for every second. Man, I miss Bloodborne, Elden Ring is just disappointing. You explore the area just to get a useless sword or spell that you can't even use, most of your weapons don't stun the enemies and require you to dodge for 10 times just to land a single hit on the enemy, the most badass time I've ever had in this game was all about using the Aspects of the Crucible: Horns incantation, isn't it awesome just to be the boss once ? Fighting like a real GOD ? not a ****ing FOUL TARNISHED ? Guess I'm going back to play God Of War, Devil May Cry 5 and Sekiro, every single boss and enemies in Elden Ring feel like a protagonist with their skill set, but me as a FOUL TARNISHED I guess I should put my foolish ambition to rest tho I've already got the Elden Ring, but seems like the Elden Lord's only good skill is infinite lives, otherwise the Elden Lord is useless, can't even dual wield the Starscourge Greatswword properly like Radahn, it's like he's a shittier version of everything, he only needs to win once against Malenia after his 200th attempts so the score is Malenia 200, Elden Lord 1. Did you see that, what a ****ing joke of the Elden Lord. Margit was right all the time.

Imagine the unalloyed malenia mod became real for the dlc. Now that aeonia incantation for the player to use would be op

This empyrean, this woman so powerful she can become a goddess, turns herself into a flower just for the hell of it! A ****ing flower! Funniest **** I've ever seen, Mohg
- Anonymous
Why should I ever use this over Burn, o Flame?
They deal around the same damage, but the latter profits from so much more buffs, like Godfrey Icon, and costs whole 2 slots less!
- Anonymous
I don’t care if they have to raise the faith requirement or fp cost. If this did more damage and had a stronger scarlet rot I would be pleased
- Anonymous
when malenia uses it: a foking nuke that gives cancer to 15% of the lands between
when i use it: if i get hit while doing it, it do not work, and, if it work, only a mid-high damage
when it will be my turn to nuke things?

Probably the greatest noob-trap in this game, it looks powerful, but really it isn't.

Why does everyone I fight in PVP run right into this?! Is this some new technique for free rot status and 1k damage? I genuinely feel concern for people trying to trade with this

"With the third bloom, she will become a true goddess"
Why is it implying that she will bloom for a third time if we already kill her to get this spell in the first place? Is it a translation error?
- Anonymous
The item description subtly suggests Malenia might not be dead after all - the scarlet aeonia bloomed first against Radahn, second against us the player and a third time upon her death. Suggesting she may now be the "true goddess" in the description, and maybe we'll fight an even stronger version of her in the DLC
- Anonymous
As this spell uses a "stonger version of scarlet rot" it does not proc the Kindred of Rot's Exultation :(((
- Anonymous
awful spell requirements for anyone tryng a Malenia cosplay. Why so much faith when Malenia's weapon is pure dex? am I supposed to believe that Malenia is secretely a faith user too??
- Anonymous
Tested on Greyoll. It totals 7 ticks after explosion for a total of 500 scarlet rot build up
- Anonymous
This spell works incredibly when used at the beginning of the Radagon fight, it will always immediately proc the rot on him and you won’t usually get hard punished because of the spells I-Frames
- Anonymous
I love this incantation so much, if they weren't gonna give hyper armor for the startup they could've at least made it only 2 slots though :(
- Anonymous
Probably my favourite incantation.
The long cast and even long recovery make this an incredibly risky bet both in PvP and PvE but with decent faith and talismans/buffs to up physical damage 9/10 times you hit something with it, they ain't getting back up.
It says in the item descriptions it's bloomed twice already wonder when the first time was since the second time was during our fight with her. Also, they should have made this just a unique skill you can use while using her sword if they really wanted to make it hard to get so people didn't abuse it they could have made it an end of DLC as they did with the embrace beast rune in Bloodborne for the Beast claws.

I do not think this spell is affected by Virtual dex / extra casting speed

Rots all pvp players within 3 ticks on minimum stats with finger seal. I like to lay down poison mist incant since it lasts way longer and people will forget about the poison after the rot disappears. Pest threads encourages players to run into scarlet aeonia. So poison mist into pest threads and then scarlet once they charge in. Cast regen or some other buff if they’re reluctant. Sacred blade or poison mist on antspur is great. I often respec between dex/fth and pure fth on a rot incantation build. Theoretically, rotten avatar staff/duelist axe and claw mark seal may be a great way to play rot paladin too.
- Anonymous
Against melania in co-op more effective then the rotten dragon. Just 3-2 times in her face. She staggers and still gets hit by the ticks and you have rotten the rot goddess. The irony is unmatched, and way easier when done in co-op. Put some poison on her and fire death afterwards and she is patheticly easy to kill.
So...does this scale with Arcane? Im doing a Faith/Arcane Cleanrot Knight Cosplay build and i have fairly high stats in Arcane.
- Anonymous
this bad boy shreds bosses on my poison build, shut up if you say otherwise, **** you, shut up, i love you scarlet aeonia. its also worth to mention that nobody expects this in pvp and gets rotted in 2 seconds.
- Anonymous
This and Rot Breath inflict a stronger version of Scarlet Rot that scales more strongly with enemy HP. Also, it deals no Rot buildup on the initial hits and instead deals 150 Rot buildup per lingering tick. Oh, also the explosion deals 362 damage at 100 spell adjust, on par with charged Comet, but falling behind Dragonmaw. In fairness, Dragonmaw is ****ing nuts.
With 55 FTH and +10 finger seal, cannot even one shot the knight in gatefront, lol. I guess there is no point to use it in PVP. The visual is cool enough though.
- Anonymous
Still sub par versus most sorceries or frost.
Given 70% of the game is about rot and it's devastation of the lands, is terrible that rot is only found in the last 5% of the game and doesn't stack up to sorceries or faith incantations.
- Anonymous
Insane spell dmg with a nearby 100% to get Scarlett rot. So far no Boss was immune to it. 2-3 times cast and Most Fell on ng 7. Alone crucible nights are able to still beat the crap out of ya
- Anonymous
does the rot buildup scale with arcane if you use the dragon communion seal?
- Anonymous
Very good incantation. Does like 2000 damage on bosses when the flower opens and applies scarlet rot.
Also pretty flower
- Anonymous
It's not documented anywhere, but this does a stronger version of rot than any other.

It’s still bad but at least usable. The biggest problem is that landing a direct hit in pvp won’t rot an opponent, because they have i frames when knocked to the ground. And then you’ll take 2 stormblades for half your 60 vigor, medium armor.
- Anonymous
Blue Dancer's Charm makes even the tick damage rapidly kill nearby players, it's hilariously op in level 40-70 invasions with flocks talisman and ritual swords talisman, add in sacred oath and howl of shabriri (or fire grant me strength if you don't want to be squishy) and you deal almost double damage while inflicting rot lol.
- Anonymous
With 80 arcane it takes 2 full fp bars to induce rot on a dragon, but it takes one of these to induce rot, I'm a pure dragon communion guy but after the nerfs to rot breath this is the move. Frost breath is still the go to eviscerater of tarnished though.
- Anonymous
This doesn't warrant three slots and neither does that sh*t show placidusax's ruin. Compare this incantation to comet azur, it's laughable.
I can cast comet azur at a blistered crow and kill it before it gets near me. No prizes for guessing the outcome when I tried it with this.
- Anonymous
This spell could easily become a top tier spell by doing a couple of the following:
-giving it a different tier of scarlet rot, stronger than the dragon communion ones
-increasing its aoe, tick damage and poise damage slightly.
-increasing the range and speed of the spell significantly. What I mean with this is, having you hover in the air for a couple of seconds, during this time you can be interrupted, which is the draw back of using it, and it’ll teach you when to use it, just like any other spell. Once you launch, hyper armor activates, and you can let the flower bloom without a problem.
-increasing the faith requirement… or decreasing the slots it takes. If the spell is made to be top tier, increasing the faith requirement would be ok as not many would use it, if left unchanged as it is, decreasing the amount of slots it takes would be better

physical damage? i would have definitely thought this was holy damage
- Anonymous
This one is truely a shame.
Scarlet Aeonia has such an beatuiful animation, but...
1.) it uses three (!!!) slots
2.) it takes forever to be casted
3.) it is way too expensive
4) it leaves you for all eternity nearly helpless to enemy attacks
So sad for the programmers that investet so many time and work in creating this thing of beauty. This incantation urgently needs an update.

Unless you can get a good stealth hit in pvp (preferably in an enclosed space) do not use. Even if you land on top of an enemy they still have plenty of time to run out without taking damage, due to the delay of the flower opening.
- Anonymous
This procs rot much faster now! And is seriously so much fun to use with the recent buff
- Anonymous
This flower is insanely good. The wiki claims Radagon resists rot, but in my experience a single cast of this is enough to rot him. Hard to line up in PvE vs opponents with ranged attacks or high poise, but if you can stagger with the plunge part it sets up the rest.
- Anonymous
It needs more poise during the flower bud, right before the explosion. You still get interrupted, and the bud still consumes fp even without going off and flowering
- Anonymous
Actually usable now that it's been buffed in 1.07. The most significant difference is that you can now roll out of the recovery animation much earlier, shortly after the flower explosion occurs (in addition to some hyperarmor adjustments and the actual impact causing poise damage). This means with good positioning and timing, it's possible to get it off even against the ridiculously hyperactive cocaine addicts that are the endgame bosses.
You can actually use it to jump over specific attacks/ground AOE's if timed correctly, makes you feel like an absolute badass if you time it to successfully jump over Godfrey's phase transition stomp and inflict rot on him in return. Not to mention it just looks cool as **** in general, an absolute visual feast for the eyes and always impressive to see someone who knows how to use it in co-op.
- Anonymous
What an underrated spell, especially now. Obviously not the strongest and it requires a bit of positioning to use properly but it's still pretty decent. Most of all though its dang fun.
- Anonymous
As of patch 1.07 it still is nowhere near worth the cost or the slot requirements, but it is at least usable now.

absolutely beautiful and fun to use don't really care what meta shitters think since they sacrifice all style just for a crumb of damage.
- Anonymous
Just a warning to people thinking to use this in boss fights, you get so much hyper armor while casting this that some bosses from a neutral state will get to perform full combo's on you while you are stuck in the recovery frames. with 55 vigor and 128 flat/48% physical reduction I have been combo'd down from 100% during the recovery unable to control my character in NG. If your planning to use this spell in PVE bossing be very careful when you cast it. No idea why they thought giving hyper armor frames to the longest recovery animation in the game was a good idea.

this is my favorite spell in the game and i hate all of you people.
- Anonymous
Has some niche use against enemies with high rot resistance. You'll need to be able to tank a hit or two while it goes off though. Good time to use it is when an enemy is getting up from being hit by a critical attack. Has a cheaper FP cost compared to the double cast of rotten breath and can low profile some attacks while the flower blooms, but otherwise rotten breath has it beat.
- Anonymous
So I killed malenia(who might be blade of miquella), got her cool nuke spell, only to be locked in an huge animation and literally everything just walked up to me and grabbed/comboed me to death? Goddamn rotten breath is better in most ways, which is a shame, because this is much cooler than breathing on people :/

Most beautiful thing in this game, deserves a freaking boost. Leaves you vulnerable for long time.

I use this spell very often- it immediately rot every big enemy and ticks so much time ( dragon , rune bear etc) I always managed to survive first bloom and better inflicting rot then dragon breath .
- Anonymous
To all saying malenia bloomed in the room next to her boss arena, you are wrong. You can pick up clothes that are from one of milicents sisters, they are right next to the flower. The travelers clothes, meaning its a sister of milicent that made it there only to bloom
- Anonymous
I see a lot of complaints about no hyper armour or DR on this spell so I’ll offer the thing that let me beat its owner in 2 attempts:
Have we tried popping an Ironjar beforehand? You don’t need to roll to cast it, its movement isn’t based off of your walk speed , so it seems like the perfect temp solution till From decides to care.
- Anonymous
I tried to use this on maliketh. I thought the whole insanely long recovery time was just malenia’s thing, so that we can heal or cast spells to damage her. Boy, was I so wrong, I used it on maliketh, and he just stood there hitting me until I die, while I keep doing that supermodel pose
- Anonymous
You aren't going to believe this, but Scarlet Aeonia is the only way I could find to beat Mohg on my NG+ run. I've been trying to do it with no spirit ash summons and I didn't want to use the Mohg Shackle. Two days of trying every single incantation I had, respeccing to arcane, every weapon I had, etc. Nothing worked, then I have one last ditch effort when I see Scarlet Aeonia, the world’s most beautiful and useless spell in my spellbook. I had nothing to lose so I tried it. Killed him on the first try lol. Something about it just works on this creepy SOB. And I have never found another place that this spell was worth it.
- Anonymous
This incantation would benefit greatly from hyperarmor. It would still be a risk to use, but at least there would be a potent reward, even if it trades.
- Anonymous
Mentioned this over on the Prosthesis Wearer's Heirloom page but it def fits here too:
"when the young girl encountered her mentor and his flowing blade, she gained wings of unparalleled strength"
If we take this part literally it could mean that Malenia "bloomed" in a battle with her mentor. This would finally put the debate about Malenia's third bloom to rest since all 3 are accounted for in the established canon.
- Anonymous
Pros:
- Looks cool af
- Basically guarantees Scarlet Rot proc on any target that can be rotted
Cons:
- Makes you die because you're stuck in recovery animation for approximately 4 whole eternities
- Takes 3 spell slots
- Attained from the hardest boss in the game (As well as one of the end game bosses, making it basically a NG+ spell)
- Anonymous
This spell travels further vertically during casting than it does horizontally when you actually try to hit something. How tf does that make any sense? I can miraculously levitate like 10 ft in the air and when I majestically crash into the ground I’m only capable of 3 feet max
So, the only use for this spell is to scralet rot bosses what usually too hard to rot with rotten breath. Like Placidusax, Radagon, fire giant and malenia herself, lol. Still pretty trash consedring it need 3 slots and you may die while sitting in the flower
Malenia is a god so she gets to show you True Terror. We're some half-dead schmuck that wasn't even worth stealing the limbs off of for grafting (or... however the hell we ended up in the cave instead of glued to Godrick). So we get a nearly-completely useless wet fart of a spell that she uses to send us straight to the nearest Stake/destroy an entire continent in a tantrum.
- Anonymous
damage reduction and hyperarmor while using this is literally the easiest buff ever, if it is really the only buff it is going to get
- Anonymous
why doesn't wearing the full malenia set turn this into a nuke like the actual battle
- Anonymous
As others have already said, it's relatively underwhelming given how long the casting takes and the fact that your character is stuck with a really long recovery animation without any kind of damage mitigation afterwards. Worth noting though that it does apply a "deadly" version of scarlet rot that will absolutely melt boss HP bars, and is technically more FP efficient than rotten breath. But actually landing the attack can be difficult, especially against the late game hyperactive bosses who never stop attacking and constantly dash all over the arena like cocaine addicts, and you're basically guaranteed to trade 1-2 hits in the process especially if you're fighting solo.
But it does look cool as hell, and it's incredibly satisfying the land, I'll give it that much. But honestly needs another buff, either speeding up the casting time significantly or allowing you to roll out of the animation immediately after the flower explosion.
- Anonymous
This one and flame of the flame god are competing for coolest looking yet useless spells in the game and so far this one is number one
- Anonymous
Rot buildup should be changed to 200 on the explosion and 100 on subsequent ticks
- Anonymous
One of the coolest incantations so far even for animation, but needs to be buffed especially for PvE. The casting makes character vulnerable to hits because of slow recovery casting time, and the rotting takes a while to gain effect. I had to spam a few times on bosses, works well with many weak enemies surrounding though.
- Anonymous
some may say that rotten breath is better, and they are right. But this spell has what rotten breath lacks. PRESENTATION!
- Anonymous
why do all the cool looking incantations in this game suck : (

If you summon torrent while the scarlet fog is still visible he'll get it too as if he's an enemy. I'm pretty sure summons are unaffected though.

I'd rather get the colorful explosion or the spirits instead of this.

Nuking Godfrey with it is so much fun, the ecstasy you get from firing WMDs is unparalleled.

A lot of people are complaining about how "weak" this incantation is and comparing it to the two Rot breath spells from the Dragon Communion school. I really only have one thing to say to those people; I see whats important to you is min-maxing as opposed to using what you like and what looks pretty. I've gone through all of the endgame with Scarlet Aeonia after rushing to and beating Malenia and it absolutely cripples bosses, you just have to use it correctly, it's not just a free win button.
