Status Effects in Elden Ring covers information regarding the different status effects that are obtained by both players and NPCs. Status Effects can be equally devastating to the player, Bosses, and other Enemies of the Lands Between. This page contains a full list of all the Status Effects in the game.
The efficacy of inflicting Status Effects is greater against unaware Enemies.
- See Buffs & Debuffs for useful information regarding the stacking or overwriting of effects on your character.
- See Equipment with Special Effects for special stat-increasing or effect-granting weapons and armor.
- See Damage Types to identify the best sources and resistances for all damage types.
- See Affinities for a comparison of each affinity's effects and their respective whetblades.
Elden Ring Status Effects
Poison

Toxins designed to whittle and slowly sap the life from enemies can inflict Poison or Deadly Poison.
When inflicted by Poison, the victim suffers from damage-over-time. The exact damage and duration varies with source of Poison.
Scarlet Rot

Pathogens designed to crumble the very being of its enemies and consume their flesh can inflict Scarlet Rot.
When inflicted by Scarlet Rot, the victim suffers from considerable damage-over-time. The exact damage and duration varies with source of Rot.
Blood Loss

Techniques designed to wound and exsanguinate can inflict acute Blood Loss.
When inflicted by Blood Loss, the victim suffers instant damage based on their max HP (100 + 15%, or 200 + 15%).
Frostbite

Cold and Freezing techniques can inflict Frostbite.
When inflicted by Frostbite, the victim suffers HP damage (30 + 10%), damage negation penalty to all sources (-20%), and slowed Stamina recovery speed. The debuff lasts 30 seconds, but can be cured prematurely by receiving Fire damage.
Sleep

Tranquilizing agents hailing from St. Trina and its lilies can inflict its targets with drowsiness, forcing them to Sleep.
When inflicted by Sleep, the victim falls asleep or briefly loses their balance. This effect can also cure mind control, see Giant Ant.
Madness

Contagious mental illness hailing from the Three Fingers and the Flame of Frenzy can inflict Madness.
When consumed by Madness, the victim is briefly stunned and suffers damage based on max HP (100 + 15%) and FP (30 + 10%).
Death Blight

Corrupted influence extracted from the Rune of Death can inflict Death Blight.
When taken by Death Blight, spires of pure death rapidly grow from their dead body, killing the victim immediately.
Elden Ring Character Effects Icons
A list of icons displayed under your healthbar indicates current statuses from afflictions, but also beneficial ones from allies, Incantations, Talismans or Equipment with Special Effects. A list of icons and their meaning is provided below:
- Icons with square borders represent permanent effects or effects which come from a permanent source such as a Talisman.
- Permanent afflictions can be freely stacked together.
- Icons with diamond borders represent temporary effects.
- Temporary afflictions, such as buffs/debuffs, are often categorized and only one of each category can be active at a time.
- Icons with no border represent effects which seem to be reactive with the world or have contextual requirements, but are not as clearly defined as those aforementioned.

We need a Vow of Silence in this game, and have it also affect weapon skills.
"Increases damage taken" effect is also caused by Crucible Feather Talisman
- Anonymous
Either no stagger on buildup, or fix the issue of build up even when dodging the attack. Having both makes people abuse dual straight swords with cold or bleed, it's such a PvP crutch.
- Anonymous
i think the fact that there's an icon for fp regen over time implying there was a ring for it but doesn't exist in game is proof the universe hates us as a whole
- Anonymous
The "Guardian Garb (Full Bloom)"
Also Produces the Increases healing effect from the Flask of Crimson Tears.

Using malenia’s great rune also causes reduced healing from having it activated with a rune arc. Just found that out.

I actually like the status effect system in concept. Having a gauge that slowly fills up per area of contact or per hit is a great way to implement status ailments in a melee action-rpg without resorting to nasty RNG or making it instant. in fact souls clones (Nioh, The Surge, Code Vein) have shown that the system has potential but sadly souls always execute it very poorly.
- Anonymous
Fire should have had a Burn effect that weakened healing items and/or temporarily lowered max health.
Lighting should have had a Paralysis effect that immobilized you for a brief moment.
Sacred should have had a Purify effect that removed all active buffs and temporarily blocked them.
Would’ve added more variety to combat imo.
- Anonymous
ripostes should have done higher status application. would have made weapons like scorpion stinger make more sense

The two status effects:
Bar fills up and you die and Bar slowly drains and you slowly die.
- Anonymous
I don't really get how or why the status effects were distributed the way they were among the stat allocations.
Cold affinity and frost spells are by far the most reliable way to proc frost and is mostly limited to int and int/hybrid builds. But faith and faith/arcane hybrids can access it too using dragon breaths and frozen lightning spear.
Rot is split between a few different weapons (3 infusible, one str colossal, the rotten crystal stuff (which is mostly quality scaling with a little int), and the scorp stinger), one faith spell and two faith/arcane dragon breath spells.
Madness is limited to faith spells, vyke's war spear (which is dex/faith) and the fingerprint shield, but potentially works best on faith/arc hybrid because DCS increases the buildup of the spells and Blood/Poison infused fingerprint shield also gets more madness buildup with arcane.
Sleep can be used on one quality-int sword, one torch and with greases. But works best on arcane due to the ripple weapons getting absurd buildup with the poison/blood/sleep grease at high arcane.
Poison/Blood are obviously best on arcane builds or arc and str/dex hybrids.
Death Blight is limited to 1 dex/faith weapon, 1 pure faith spell and 1 int/faith spell.
Overall, it seems all over the place with arc and arc hybrids being the best for most of them with int and int hybrids being best for frost. Wish that the statuses were built more for hybrid builds in general. Like there was a status effect infusion for all the statuses (except Death Blight I guess because that would be ridiculous in pvp), which was suited to hybrid stat building of a particular kind. For example: dex/arc hybrids could get the blood infusion, while str/arc could get the poison infusion, dex/faith could get a madness infusion, dex/int gets the cold infusion, while str/int gets a rot infusion. str/faith could get a sleep infusion. Would add more build choices for hybrid builds imo, because as it stands, hybridisation (unless you're going faith/arc) limits your spellcasting potential while giving you lower overall damage on infusible weapons (you could get a little more AR out of a cold infusion on a str/int hybrid than a pure str build due to the 2-handing str bonus at RL150, but it's split damage). It would be interesting from a gameplay mechanics perspective if particular hybridisations would be rewarded for particular affinities.

FromSoftware is a company where some of the most talented artists, writers, and game designers in the entire industry work... who still haven't figured out how to fix hit detection and status effects after more than ten years. But the best thing about this is that they design bosses like Vordt, Mohg and even Malenia around this borked system that doesn't really make sense. Hell, Bloodborne's rally mechanic thematically incorporates it by being able to take back health from fallen foes for one or two seconds. Such a strange developer.

I’m trying to build my first arcane char. And I was questionning. Does arcane bonus (status effect) apply on something witch does not have arcane scaling? There is some weapons for exemple with bleed, rot, poison but no native arcane scaling.
- Anonymous
Instead of nerfing the status buildup of dual wielded weapons they should have nerfed the status buildup of dual wielded weapons with daggers as an exception. From hates daggers, especially powerstanced daggers.

just be thankful theres no enfeebled status effect in elden ring lol

Table is missing perfumer shield, raises immunity permanently too.

Anyone on here know if procing frostbite on a target increases the tick damage a target takes from rot and poison? Currently running dual Antspur rapiers with blood and poison and I'm wondering if I could get more damage from the rot and poison. It does mention above that frostbite increases damage from all sources but clarification on other status affects would be nice.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
status buildup should be reduced on powerstanced weapons, getting bled out twice in a single curved sword running attack at 450 robustness just shouldn't be a thing
- Anonymous
So I’m pretty sure FromSoft finished developing the damage types then moved on to status effect and decided to do so in alphabetical order starting with blood. After blood they started on cold and that is when they ran into a deadline and had to get the game in the stores. They threw in the mist animation with a weapon slash for the other status effects.
- Anonymous
status effect is not intended to be able to build up when opponents rolled your attacks, it needs to be fixed, status effect can build up really fast already, its very broken = =
- Anonymous
5-6 games in and they still can't make split damage work worth a crap.
- Anonymous
I hate that status effects in this game are just about overpowering your opponent. They should be about applying pressure to your opponent, forcing them to make mistakes. Look to the blood incantations for an example of what I mean. But in reality they're just another way of nuking your opponent's health bar and not all that different from the blue death rays that mages use. As someone who prefers a more technical playstyle, it's really disappointing.
- Anonymous
I’m not sure if this is known, I can’t find this exact info. Do we know how much status effect build up there is per arcane point?
- Anonymous
wtf is the point of sleep. i dealt 1000+ damage with this and the invader tanked all of it. why

https://imgur.com/a/nZbdtS5 about this. Isn't this a Craigblade Ash of War?

I can't help but feel FromSoft dropped the ball when it comes to PvE status effects. With the massively limited capacity of Madness, Sleep and Deathblight (While Poison just sucks... Even Deadly Poison is just worse than Scarlet Rot) despite them having such potential.
Madness should be able to affect any target (That isn't immune for lore reasons). With non-boss enemies gaining a debuff that makes them attack ANY target and apply Madness build up on hit (Like the maddened Rats you encounter do) allowing the status effect to create actual Chaos where a group of enemies starts attacking each other while you watch and cackle with glee...
Sleep should put all non-boss/Tarnished targets to sleep. Like, full sleep. Not the BS "Sleepy for 1 second then shake it off" nonsense that 90% of enemies present. While bosses and Tarnished should be resistant and offer that brief period of vulnerability (It should also interrupt actions to put them to sleep, none of this "Waiting 10 seconds for the boss to finish doing their 10000 attack combo". It should still be balanced because unlike Bleed/Frostbite it doesn't just nuke their health bar)
Deathblight should simply work on all non-boss targets (Excluding undead/basilisks/wormfaces). It shouldn't be too broken since by the time you actually build it up, you've likely killed most non-boss targets through damage (Unless you're specifically just dancing around Fia's Mist for whatever reason). While bosses should take 10% max health + 5% current health in damage on proc instead of insta-death (Sort of a progressively weaker Bleed)

So would it be possible that certain classes with certain base templates have certain buffs
Do they differ is it just what ever base template you chose I mean there are little hints in the words
But I have yet to be able to find any explanation for this Mysterious buff that shows up randomly like a pickle fowl foot but I have not even found a fowl foot let alone consumption of one
So yeah I’m happy with it but now wonder what all the base templates offer

Is there a way to see what these icons mean in game? Some sort of mouse-over effect?
- Anonymous
so I did some number crunching
if you add every weapon with any of these innate damages together, excluding bleed, bleed still overpowers all of them in options by 27.
For reference there are...
5 weapons with innate Poison
8 weapons with innate Scarlet Rot
50 weapons with innate Blood Loss
6 weapons with innate Frostbite
3 weapons with innate Madness
and 1 weapon with innate death blight

Rot,broken. sleep, broken.bleed, super broken. frost, same as bleed. madness, broken. they all need nerfs.
There seems to be a discovery buff at night not mentioned here. Looks like chicken foot with arrow but without any background.
I would really like if someone could better organize the main 7 status effects, poison maddness etc, I tried my best but the wiki editor is driving me crazy and I just can't figure out how to get it to keep the formatting it currently has. I want the effects with matching icons to be paired together, I always thought that I was a nice detail.

About the icon of 'Recovers HP upon Defeating Enemies', the great stars weapon recover HP also on hit enemies (work in mult hit animations like backstab animation), not only defeating enemies

I'm pretty sure the '???' one means that your attacks causes more Posture damage. For exemple using the Stonebarb Cracked Tear.

What is the % decrease when a weapon with a status effect is blocked? Is there any way of finding this out. For example: A player using 2 Hoslow Petal Whips has the cold affinity and successfully hits the opposing players who blocks the hits with a fingerprint shield. How would you calculate the status buildup of bleed and frostbite in this example?
- Anonymous
Reduces Item FP Consumption is from Primal Glintstone Blade, it also reduces HP 140 I believe

I noticed a status effect i had that wasn't on this list, and i realized what it is. Its the icon that looks like the grace with a red x in the corner, it shows up when you've been ensnared in a trap. It means you can't fast travel until you get to a grace, i'm guessing. Figured i'd mention this if someone wanted to add it to the list above! Thanks for this awesome elden wiki its helped me more than you know!!

Someone know how coop scaling down works? I do a level 1 run with a friend and my friend are scaling down (less life). But we are both at level 1.
The only thing I see is because he are farer in the game than me. Before he hit the capital there was no scaling down.

The Crimson Hood that Roderika used to wear (can be picked up in Stormveil Castle) also increases Vigor a small amount and you get the Red Square icon
Two things I noticed that I don't really know how to fix, it is possible to get a temporary max health debuff through Black Knife Assassin, Skill: Blade of Death, and Maliketh. I've also noticed that the 5th icon in the "Cleanup" table is the same icon as the Rune counter portion of the HUD, so it may not be intended as a status icon at all. I'd love to know if anyone could confirm if it is indeed used as a status icon.

The gold fowl foot w/o background is also for group passwords when someone in your group defeats a shardbearer, though I think this effect lasts either for 5 minutes or until you reload the area/teleport out the area, whichever comes first. I notice it goes away if I sit at a site of grace.

How much status buildup do you need vs an enemy with 0 resistance? Is it 100?

I believe the third from the bottom is the level scaling when summoned to a lower level players world. It seem to kick in at a 10 level difference
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Two things. The windy crystal tear (enhances dodge rolls) physick mix also seems to have the same aggro icon and effect as shabiri's talisman.
I also have seen with the applied affects (bleed, madness, frost, etc) that it take more applications after each successful application. This is not just the initial damage giving a boost, as it takes more every time. Tested on great greyll with both bleed and poison. Implications are that enemies gain resistance after each application.

If you have multiple group passwords set in multilayer, do the rune buffs from that stack?
E.g. you get 5% more runes from one group and an additional 5% from another, or is the buff always 5% regardless of how many groups you're currently in via their passwords?

I've killed Malenia but I don't have Malenia's rune activated and I still have the Flask Debuff Icon (Number 15 / 16 on the list), though there might 2 things that can trigger the debuff; I have done the Volcano Manor contracts on this playthrough and I am thinking that might be why I have the debuff. I'm on NG+ and haven't done anything major except for those contracts at Volcano Manor.

The flask debuff symbol in a square(icon nr. 15) comes from Malenias great rune when its activated. It makes your flasks weaker.

They should make it so that status doesn’t go through rolls, rn they stagger so if you get a proc while you are in a roll/quickstep/bloodhound step the enemy can just get a free hit on you with madness or bleed or poison/scarlet rot/frostbite you even if you’ve avoided every one of their hits.

Temporary physical damage debuff is caused by wearing Silver Tear Mask https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Silver+Tear+Mask

Would be great if they would add a debuff/buff bar to the enemies when you lock onto them with tab target. In boss fights like Radan its hard to tell at all if your rot arrows are doing anything

The Blessed Dew Talisman grants the Red tear drop symbol currently listed in Work in progress! Its probably the symbol for health over time.

The "temporal Gain FP on kill" effect is granted by the Sacrificial Axe. Killing a target restores 4 FP. Buff indicator is displayed after a target has been killed, but will be removed if the weapon is switched.

The HP debuff from embracing Fia is also caused by wearing the Twinsage Glintstone Crown.

"Temporarily attarct enemies' aggression." is applied to the caster after casting the Howl of Shabiri incantation.

Not sure if its here, i didnt see it but elements have positive and negative effect with theit opposits and their conductors. For example of you stand in water your lgihting negating goes down by atleast 8 while your fire neg goes up by about 9. This works for all targets including bosses and minor enimies as well as pvp. Also is affected by rain. Im unsure about snow or cold temps as well as extream heat areas but id presume they due. Rolling in poison also makes you take more poison build up. Again im assuming the same happens with rot.
Curse seems to last the longest with build up timers than any other status effect. Could only tret this with the ugly eyed frogs. (I know those aren't their eyes) needs more testing but i dont think you can dual coat status effects unless they are passive. Applying them as active seems to only have the right hand work while the lect hand just gets and damage boost.. i hope to be proven wrong here.

You get the temporary physical damage boost from the spirit summon Stormhawk Deenh. Symbol is the sword with a diamond background and white up arrow. The hawk will screech periodically, buffing your physical attack power. The boost lasts for approximately 30 seconds.

Scarlet rot is NOT instant death. It deals sizable chunks of your health every second in a similar, yet more powerful, version of poison. You can get it and survive pretty easily

Cannot craft is one of the icons unknow. I did some early datamining and discovered what many mean off top of my head i know one is cannot craft usually in battle. There is also 2 other status states not listed here I have the Img on my Main Computer pulled from game if you like me to add, missing lot of the Accolade status types like poise boon & Group_server_cheat icon that lets you know you are in pool with other people who modded files or cheat (offline as well once going online the values must match or be reasonable/logical. This game seems to keep track of steps taken, walls hit, hit/miss %, Runes (and where they came from it seems from files game has odd values for runes. Runes you earn in one area are not the same as ones from another area for example if there is a misalignment it talks with anti cheat service and bounces back 5 times to ensure the move to cheater pool os enabled) please excuse my English I have just learned it 2 yesrs ago i am from Italy.

Hello everyone. I hope someone can help me: in the last game session I had two horrible temporary but frequent debuffs that I don't know what they depend on: Physical damage temporarily reduced and the same about absorbtion. I can't understand what they depend on. Anyone know something about?thanks

the temprarly flask down effect is from blackflame protection incarnation and it lowers the effectivnes of flasks and gives damage negation

Pretty sure the one with two flasks and red cross means you cant use your flask (similar to undead hunter charm in ds3), i think i got that effect from one of the enemies near outpost at northwest from church of irith
Guys the ones in squares are permeant effects, diamonds are temporary effects.

The one below the Sacrificial Twig buff is the temporary prevention of rune loss on death, provided by Twiggy Cracked Tear in the Flask of Wondrous Physick.

What exactly is "The rune (gold chicken foot) happens during the Rune weather event" supposed to mean? Please elaborate on these things. It does not make any sense whatsoever to someone who does not know about supposed "weather events"!
