Ancient Hero of Zamor is a Field Boss in Elden Ring. Ancient Hero of Zamor is an agile swordwielder that uses frost magic and is found in multiple locations. This is an optional boss, as players don't have to defeat it to advance to the Legacy Dungeon.

Knights of Zamor are the normal enemy variants of this boss.

These long-lived warriors, clad in biting, freezing winds, are said to have been the mortal enemies of the Fire Giants since time immemorial.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Ancient Hero of Zamor Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Ancient Hero of Zamor:

  • Glintblade Phalanx and Glintstone Arc can work wonders as they often avoid projectiles.
  • Avoid relying on your shield, since it won't be very effective in Phase 2

Melee Users

Free Damage: At the beginning of the fight, run in and get in a few hits. They'll often just dodge away once they're fully spawned, although they may also do a Spinning Swing. It's up to you whether the risk is worth the extra damage. You can get in free hits again while it's using Imbue Frost during the change from Phase 1 to Phase 2, which lasts 9 full seconds and doesn't do any damage.

Bait & Strike: Stay outside its swing radius to bait out distance-closing attacks like Leaping Slam and the double clockwise swing combo. In Phase 2, Spring Forward and Triple Swing work as well. These moves tend to have fairly long recovery times, so you can get in a hit or two before backing off again and repeating the process. If you manage your distance well enough, you may also be able to run to the side and get in a hit when it uses Frost Breath as well.

Parrying: Most of this boss's sword swings are parryable (consult the Attacks & Counters chart for exact details), and it tends to have relatively telegraphed wind-ups. If your timing is good, strap on a Buckler and this guy might be a breeze.

Magic and Ranged Users

Stand Back: The Ancient Hero's only fully ranged attack is Frost Breath, which is easy to dodge if you see it coming. This makes it relatively straightforward to stand back and attack from a distance. Just be wary of its distance-closing melee attacks, and keep enough stamina in reserve to dodge away once it tries to close in. It can even be useful to try to stay a bit closer to bait out a slower attack like Spinning Swing or Zamor Ice Storm, and then punish it from afar.

Watch Your Elements: Faith users and archers should keep in mind this boss's weakness to Fire and Lightning damage. Flame Sling and Firebone Arrows are good early options that can take advantage of this weakness.

Ancient Hero of Zamor Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Swing parry icon 40pxSwings its sword in a variety of directions Parry or dodge away and wait for the combo to end. Blocking isn't recommended, because you'll still take Magic damage and build Frostbite in Phase 2. This is usually parriable, but not if the Hero swings while retreating
Spinning Swing parry icon 40pxCrouches down and spins its sword around a full turn and a half Roll away once, then come back and get in a few hits during the very long recovery
Leaping Slam Jumps in the air and slams its sword down in front of it Roll forward when you see the sword become vertical, then get in a hit during the long recovery
Frost Breath Kneels down and blows a stream icy wind in in front of cone that gradually grows larger as it travels.  As soon as you see it kneel, run or jump to the side to avoid being in the area of effect. If you're close enough, you can move to its side or back and get in some free hits while it does this attack
Frost Orb Puts its left hand over its right shoulder and quickly creates a sphere of magic around it, knocking enemies back and dealing minor damage.  Roll away as soon as you see its arm move. Take care not to get hit by this too much, as it gives considerable Frost build-up.
Imbue Frost Once it goes below 60% health, it falls to its knees, then enchants its sword with frost magic before rising and twirling around, beginning Phase 2 Run towards and wail on it as much as you can, as it becomes much more aggressive once it switches phases.
Phase 2
Spring Forward Kneels briefly, then leaps forward into a counterclockwise swing Roll towards it once you see the sword start to fall, then get in a hit during recovery
Leaping Swings Jumps into the air swinging its sword upwards, then swings it downwards as it falls Roll to either side
Twiple Swing parry icon 40pxJumps into the air and swings its sword downwards and clockwise, then swings twice clockwise in quick succession once it lands Roll away twice and then attack once it finishes its third swing
Ice Burst parry icon 40pxShoves its sword into the ground, then pulls it out creating a small burst of ice There's enough time to get a hit in before it pulls out the sword if you're careful. Otherwise, just keep your distance until the move is over.
Zamor Ice Storm Builds up frost magic in its palm, then touches it to the ground to create a large whirlwind of ice that lasts a couple seconds  Although this has a long windup, it's very difficult to stagger it out of the attack so it's best to just leave when you see it charging up. This is a great opportunity for getting in some ranged damage

parry icon 40px: Attack can be parried

i still dont understand why one of these is at the end of what is arguably the final hero grave you find in the game, you find a whole party of these right at the entrance of the mountaintops, the phase 2 is not strong enough to make this a final dungeon boss at this point in the game, i wish this guy had a more unique second phase

fromsoft's sprinkling of frost, a somewhat obscure mechanic not readily available to player characters, on bosses just smacks of them cheaply increasing difficulty. along with his dodging of spells, absurd poise (GL with landing staggers, heavy swingers), this boss is yet another eye-rolling chore in this game.

'Zamor (christened Louis-Benoit) (1762[ – February 7, 1820) was a French revolutionary from Bengal, who, as a boy of 11, was taken from Chittagong, Bengal Subah, Mughal Empire (now Bangladesh) by slave traders. Later, he was gifted to Countess du Barry and became her servant until informing on her to the Committee of Public Safety. He participated in the French Revolution and was imprisoned by the Girondins.' - Wikipedia

Why do they wear manacles around their wrists? What kind of hero wears those?

How much of their story was written by the victors, to hide the deep evil committed for the sake of that victory?

One of my absolute favorite minibosses/enemies in the game. Their sword and armor set are my favorite to use, but the first time i fought him was one of my favorite experiences ever, they fight so elegantly i just end up prolonging the fight to look at their animations. The abilities and moves are genuinely fun to play against and as a beginner player on my first playthrough, the fight against the first zamor hero taught me the more fast paced combat than ds3 and earlier games. I just think i love their design more than anything, and as i said before their armor is my favorite in the game, i always go get it. All in all, i think people hate on this fight more than its needed, as once you start learning their attacks its really fun and you feel like youre dancing with the boss. :>

I wish you could get their frost repulsion attack as an incantation or maybe AoW. I’ve always found that attack to be so cool and clean.

On my second playthrough as a dex/bleed character, I discovered that poison, dual weapons of the same type/status effect, and jump attacks were effective in the Weeping Evergoal. I copied the same tactic in Hero's Grave, but with Mimic. Bloodhound or Tiche work as well.

As a sorcerer, I struggled mightily with him because of the way he dodges. I finally killed him with Ambush Shard, which isn't dodged. Just had to learn to dodge his attacks to survive the second half of the fight and patiently keep hitting him with Ambush Shard.

As far as bosses go, its a glass cannon. So while I wouldn't call it "difficult" (you just have to take some hits), I have a hard thinking of a boss off the top of my head that is less fun to fight. Because man! this boss uses all the cheats:
                        - Input reads casting, attacking, quickuse, dodging, blocking, running, walking, looking in its general direction... everything. It input reads freaking everything
                        - Dash attacks that can cross the whole arena
                        - Runs away with a smack to the face
                        - Every melee is a two parter and roll catches
                        - Half arena AoE

wish you could still summon them as a spirit ash like in that screenshot that was leaked before the game came out.

I get the music being the heroic one because of the "Hero" in the boss's name, but honestly, who else thinks "Black Knives" would have suited them a lot more?

Not a hard boss, but a very annoying and evasive one, i absolutely hate that stupid shockwave blast that comes out instantly with no windup that he does that completely knocks you over and hits you before you get so much as a millisecond to even react to it, again not what i'd call a difficult boss, just a very annoying one, who constantly input reads, and predicts you before you even know what you're doing yourself.

this boss is extremely annoying, you need a key to fight it, and you can get the stronger version of its talisman for way less effort. just skip it honestly, not worth your trouble

Some of the Ancient Hero of Zamor's attacks are parryable aren't they? How come it's not listed that they are?

the name of their AI starts with buddy, and so do the weird pale guys in nokron, given their connection to godfrey by being so close to those crucible knights, and thus the war against the giants, that the tall zamor guys fought in.
could they be related at all?

This boss crumples to jumping heavy attacks. Every. Single. Time. Without fail. It hardly even matters what weapon you're using, it'll stun him out of almost every single one of his attacks.
Spamming this one single move (and being mindful of the Ancient Hero's attacks) is a foolproof method for victory.

The order you fight the evergaol challenge bosses seems a little off from what I've seen so far. Adan thief of fire at the first evergaol you find in Liurnia dies surprisingly quickly to a +5 greatsword with freezing grease, dead before he could use any of his fire incantations. Darriwil likely the first evergaol players are likely to come across in Limgrave, is a proper handful though. Ancient hero of Zamor at the weeping peninsula evergaol is a real handful as well and not any sort of walkover but three volcano pots and a hit or two with +5 greatsword with fire grease is enough to kill him, as long as you can survive his frostbite AOE. I haven't tried the crucible knight at stormhill evergaol yet, but if its anything like the crucible knight enemies in-game, its another one that's going to be a proper handful. It just sort of seems that the evergaol bosses were randomly placed with no thought as to the skill level and weapon upgrades available to the player when they are likely to stumble across them.

You’d think being the immortal enemies of the Fire Giants would mean that they resist fire, having learned how to fight them…nope.

The tips telling you to take advantage of their "weakness" to magic have obviously never seen Fire or Lightning at work. Melts this boss without any issue.

If you're a mage, just spam Stars of Ruin as you should when fighting nearly all human enemies and dodge-heavy enemies in general.

Sword of night and flame +5, Lhutel ashes +4….distracted and hit him with 5 flame special attacks, done in 40 seconds

For the Saint's Hero version, I demolished him with a Fire Godskin Stitcher +17, Flame, Grant Me Strength and Flame of the Redmanes. Weak to both Fire and Pierce. His attacks leave a lot of room for backstabs and heavy attacks. When he kneels down to spread Frost on the floor, circle to the right and nail him from behind.

If you are looking for an early flame weapon to fight this boss at the Weeping Evergaol, try the Steel-Wire torch. It does pretty good damage against the boss, and the weapon art hits even through a dodge.

                                                            Saint Hero Grave version:

                                                            1. Bolt of Gransax charged full bolt him 1 itme upon entrance, his half HP gone
                                                            2. He entered phase 2 and enchant his blade with frost at same position.
                                                            3. Charged up another Bolt of Gransax while he enchanting, finished him off.

Not worth fighting. He's only about 5k runes and drops a weaker version of a talisman you can rush for at the start. You also can't stack the two talismans either, so there's not point in fighting him for the weaker version you don't have to fight anyone for.

Quite easy with bloodhound fang. Start with charge attack and bloodhound finesse. Then recharge focus when he transforms. For phase 2, just dodge and time your Bloodhound finesse. Especially when he does his forward ice breath.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

You only start really missing with them during the second phase when he starts using higher mobility attacks, though you can still make enough space to ward those off for a bit. I just pumped him full of those until death with the nearby lowbie catalyst, a couple blue flasks worth of FP, and like 10 Int. You might need to clean up after that if you beef some of your shots, but hitting him like 3 times is much easier than hitting him 30. Mileage may vary with high level variants though.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

Does decent damage since they're weak to magic damage and unlike Glintstone Pebble and Arc, the boss won't sidestep to dodge Ambush Shard at all (her sidesteps seem to be wider than Darriwil or his hitbox was wider with the crouching, because Arc at least hit him most of the time). The only time it misses is when the boss bends to blow ice or dash in. Made first phase incredibly easy.
