Confessor is a starting Class in Elden Ring. The Confessor has high Faith and medium physical stats. It starts the game level 10 with a broadsword, a kite shield and a finger seal. The Classes only determine the starting Stats and Equipment of the player, but as the game progresses, players can freely change their build to their preferred playstyle. There are 10 Classes in Elden Ring that the player can begin the game with.

Elden Ring Confessor Notes & Tips

  • Although designed to be a mix of combat and stealth, this Class can be seen as the defacto "Paladin" class. This one sets players up with a 100% Physical Damage reduction Shield, as well as good Faith for Incantations.
  • While the stats of this class indicate it is the best choice for a hybrid build between Faith and Strength/Dexterity, there is actually no build where Confessor is the most optimal choice, and in many instances is actually worse than Wretch due to the thin distribution of points across Strength, Dexterity, Faith and Arcane causing too many wasted points. Vagabond is often the better pick for a Strength/Faith build, while Prophet is better for Dexterity/Faith.
  • It can be used for an Intelligence/Faith build that primarily utilizes Sword of Night and Flame, since the class has already met the Strength and Dexterity requirements of the weapon. However, Astrologer is equally efficient for this build.

Fextralife comments: choosing the confessor starting class is unoptimal for any build because of the wasted stat points. If you’re going for a strength/faith build, the vagabond is the best choice because it doesn’t have any wasted stats in arcane. If you choose confessor as your starting class you’re going to have a bad time in the early game, but maybe it can pull through by the end

People in real life: man this game is pretty fun

"Worse than the wretch" my left foot! This is perfect for strength-faith because you won't have to worry about leveling faith as much to meet early game incants, allowing you to just focus on strength or any other stat

The basic flail should have been a 12/12 starter weapon for Confessor. Chainlink for Str, Nightrider for Dex, and regular for balance.

say what you will but this is one of the only early game fashion classes with just the altered chestpiece and bandit mask

This class has a single purpose - a SoNaF build, and even there he loses the competition if you count Soreseal in

Besides FTH/INT, you can use this optimally in another way more lore accurate. Just raise Intelligence to 13 and make a DEX/FTH Confessor build using Order's Blade and Two Finger Incantations as well as Staff of the Guilty with Abberrant Sorcery or basic Glintston/Carian spells for a versatile melee and caster spellblade that can 1 hand weapons up to 12 Strength, so a great variety for a build with always a catalyst offhand.

Aside from the Golden Order/Death build with Sword of NandF, Erdsteel Dagger and Clayman Harpoon, I have found Confessor optimal in the case a player keeps 12 Strength and levels Faith and Intelligence alongside Dexterity. The 13 kind comes in handy for a Spellblade Assassin build using the Two Finger Incantation, because tmat that point you can bump the devent (9) Intelligence to 13 and get Order's Blade as buff (scaling with Faith only)

If you want a faith strength build, that also uses arcane for some incantations then the confessor is optimal. If you need more dexterity though which you most likely will then it ties with vagabond

Great class for a Cleanrot Scythe build, which is enough for me. Confessor is janky, but we still love him

Can make a temple knight with the endure ash of war on a heavy halberd or partisan. Needs mind or intelligence less than astrologer's to avoid being tied with it. Can raise magic glintblades after knocking foes down with rejection. Can access order's blade, magic glintblade, and discus of light regardless of which stat you sacrifice to avoid tying with astrologer. Can use greatsword, erdsteel dagger, grossmesser, or sacred pest's glaive if you prefer. Can use sword of night and flame efficiently, but has to remain its mind stat below the astrologer's to avoid being tied. Can use the miquellan knight's sword, but can't efficiently dump into dex and thus is impotent with it. Can use the golden epitaph, but needs to incorporate the 12 dex so it isn't wasted somehow. You could use the extra casting speed as an excuse for the 12 dex if you want. Can also use the clayman's harpoon.

kinda wish this class started with a dagger with a decent crit modifier, to add on to the whole stealth assassin vibe

I think the comparison to wretch is apt. Relatively even stats, access to great utility incants and starts with nice stuff. I dunno what the problem is, if you have to be perfectly efficient just pick whatever your stat calculator told you to. That's the only point of those lol, they don't care if the class starts with nice armor or useful weapons.

Actually the best part of Confessor is not stats, but weapons: Broadsword has Square Off and it has the HIGHEST stance damage(40) (in the entire game); and comparing with Vagabond which also has Longsword + Square off, Longsword has less damage. And Vagabond and Confessor both have 100% phy reduction shield. It makes easy phase at least as easy as Vagabond. And with Finger Seal you can somehow cure yourself, so he has means of Mana -> HP conversion.

I use claws. It meets the concept design. Dual wield + Quickstep + execution high damage is what I like. When facing shields, I pick up the preset Broadsword and counter-strike after defending. Then, if I really want to block things like Crucible, I bought small shield. Throw fire, Recovery. All simple things and early accessible. I don't know if this is the optimal build, but it's fun and Quickstep is ez while block is safe. You just need a little bit of manoeuvre to switch between shield/two -handing claws.

Don't get too caught up in what's "meta". Taking a hybrid Dex/Faith build as an example, going for either a 20/60 split or 30/50 split, you need 137 levels to reach "full build" (with 60 Vigor, 35 Mind, 20 Endurance, 20/30 Dexterity, and 20/60 Faith). Compare that to the Prophet, a class that's generally seen as best of Faith builds and its hybrids, which ***drumroll*** ALSO needs 137 levels to reach that same final build -- potentially a couple more, depending on your choice of weapon's Strength requirements.

As for pure 80 Faith builds, the Confessor needs 148 levels, while the Prophet needs 147. Either way, you're looking at a 1~3 investment difference for end-game builds. That's crying over spilled milk, if I ever saw it. Starting class matters most if you're aiming for the agreed upon 120 level cap for "hardcore" PVP.

I feel like a change for people to stop worrying is if arcane was dropped down by 3 or so points, like how prisoner cuts out faith options from its builds have confessor drop out arcane based skills, makes them good for hybrid builds using either physical skills or with intelligence to become a hybrid caster, let prophet have dragon and blood incantations

                                    • Anonymous

PVE build: Confessor, lv 149. 50 vigor, 80 faith, mind/endurance of your choice that sum up to 50 (I like 25/25 unless I need more of one or the other). 15 str and 15 dex to open up a whole lot of weapons for infusing, including flame art uchi and two-handed blasphemous blade, more if you use the stat boost talismans or physick tears. Int and arc both left at 9, allowing you to use discus of light with the stargazer heirloom and every dragon communion incantation with the silver tear mask. If you use stargazer+tear+any int-boosting helmet, you can cast triple rings of light, but miss out on Radagon's rings of light by 1 point even with twinsage+stargazer+int tear. You cann fix that by raising int to 10 to make it a solid level 150, if you really want to.

Great generalized faith build that can use basically anything faith-based with the right gear, at the cost of a few talisman slots depending on what you want to spec into. You can also take some points out of faith and put it in the stat of your choice if you want to use something consistently without a talisman, but I prefer the versatility - five levels you can flex around freely means more to me than five levels in strength and a free slot.

I prefer to use this class over Wretch, as it at least gives me a bit of solid starting gear... that and i usually try to make the most of my stats by only keeping them as low as the requirements of some more useful gear allows.
As i say: having only 6 to 9 in a stat is still 6 dead levels, it pays to find a minimum use instead~

'While the stats of this class indicate it is the best choice for a hybrid build between Faith and Strength/Dexterity, there is actually no build where Confessor is the most optimal choice, and in many instances is actually worse than Wretch due to the thin distribution of points across Strength, Dexterity, Faith and Arcane causing too many wasted points.'

I mean, if we just want to compare it statwise then Wretch trumps all because a lv1 with 10 stats has more potential then all specialized classes. Funny thing is, it also means more runes need to be spent in order to make it better. Also, big whoop, Wretch has 1 more point of arcane and int, as opposed to confessor with 2 more str and dex, 3 more mind and 4 more fai. This means that, in order to match stats, Wretch ends up spending 11 levels worth of runes to match Conf., where as Conf. just needs 2 to match his stats.

'Vagabond is often the better pick for a Strength/Faith build, while Prophet is better for Dexterity/Faith.'

Vagabond is a safer pick, but I'd pick Hero for STR Fai hybrid since knight set and heater is in roundtable. Prophet is a good choice, but I'd still pick Conf. since it has more survivability and is more balanced stat wise.

                                          • Anonymous

Good for int/fth builds requiring a sum of str, dex, endurance, or vigor that's 2 or more points less than that of vagabond, to compensate for its mandatory 2 extra points in arcane (unless you think the extra arcane justifies itself). Off the top of my head, you could use the spear, mace, sword of night and flame, or a katana (I know these because I'm a dex user, someone might want to post a reply with strength weapons that require at most 12 dex, and there might be dex weapons i missed). Since there aren't split int/fth affinities, you might be limited to lesser golden order incantations when it comes to magic so you can have more concentration on your melee weapon. Bear in mind this class has to compete with prophet.

this class feels like a ds3 herald with a ds1 warrior's weapon of choice and ds3 assassin's spellset, armor and level... what an amalgamation, must be the reason why i never thought of starting with this class, it has a bit of everything but is good at nothing.

                                              • Those 9 points in Arcane are really unnecessary. If they dropped his level by 1 and his Arcane to 8 he would be the best int/fth pick instead of being outclassed/tying with other classes for optimization.

i finally found build this class is efficient for! a hex build with 12 12 dex str for the sword of night and flame and this is tied with astrologer for most efficient starting class

A confessor who is also a spy is a curious combination. It really sparks the imagination as to how they operated.

                                                    • Anonymous

A real shame this mf has unwanted points in Int and Arc. Lower one down to 6 or 7 and it'll be ideal for Fth-related builds. I'll stick with Vagabond then go get the set later.

                                                      • Anonymous

No matter how hard I try I can't make a build where Vagabond or even Wretch is better. Every other class in the game does Confessor's "niche" better.

                                                        • Anonymous

Easily the best looking class imo with decent all around stats except for faith being a little bit higher. Later in the game you can pair the hood with Banished Knight Armor and it looks amazing!

                                                          • I remember when I was stuck between this, Vagabond and the Astrologer while I was pre-downloading the game and it literally took me an hour or so to decide.
I am a PvP guy so having Vagabond would be the most optimal since you need quite a bit of health, strength and dex for whichever build you're going for but not every build uses INT/FTH/ARC. Though even knowing that, I really wanted to have some magic going from the start because they looked extremely fun in this game, so I was left with this and the Astrologer. Went with the Astrologer at the end, thought I'd at least have the most optimal class for any intelligence based build in the future.
Looking back to it now, It's a bummer I didn't choose Confessor because damn do I love the way it's starter armor looks... I searched for a better armor with the Astrologer for so long that it kinda kept me distracted and made me skip a lot of stuff in the first couple areas. Don't get me wrong, the Astrologer set looks dope as well but the hood is what makes it in my opinion, and you lose that if you don't wear the robe, which gets a little boring after seeing other chest pieces along the way.
Fashion souls (or elden bling as they say) has always been my number one priority since DS1, I should've known it'd mess with me... Welp, at least I have a decent SL90, 70 INT mage in the pocket now.

                                                            • Anonymous

Ok, yeah, I started as confessor, but ended up a full mage. I know, horror for min maxing guys, but it works. The little bit faith helped with lava or death sorceries.

                                                              • Anonymous

People need to remember that competitive PvP players who care about every stat point being ideally assigned are a small subset of the player base. For PvE focused players, your starting class is ultimately about making the early game easier and role playing. This is easily one of the top 2-4 starting classes in the game in that regard and great for new players figuring out their preferred style.

                                                                - Balanced stats might be bad for min-max in PVP, but this is meant to be a versatile class with access to stealth, melee, and magic to start. Make a point of getting a bow early and you can do it all.
                                                                - One of two classes with access to Incantations from the start of the game. Much easier for new player than the glassier Prophet with their weak starting weapon. Quick Heal is always helpful and Assassin’s Approach makes this character one of the best stealth options to start along with Bandit.
                                                                - One of two classes with a proper 100% Physical resistance shield to start the game. Does not have the tanky armor you’d expect from most RPG Paladin classes (Vagabond is best option for that), but the armor is pretty good against non-physical damage. So with proper use of the shield and Incantations, this character can be very sustainable.
                                                                - Broadsword is very solid straight sword that is fun to dual wield/power stance but can also do well with shield or two-handed. Again, versatility is big. Samurai Uchigatana is still the best starting melee IMO but this can also be used well into the mid game.
                                                                - Role playing is a bit subjective but I just think this armor is pretty cool and unique. There are so many holy knight/paladin type armors in the later game that this transitions into.

                                                                • Anonymous

Jack of All Trades. A really good class for people that wants a covert-op playstyle like minimal defense and more on lethal melee/mid range approach. Assassin's Creed vibes but with Magic.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Don't understand the hate. In a game where you can respec like 20 times, this is arguably the best class. Always have enough for a small heal and some blood spells. Don't have 7 arcane like the Vagabond. Decent physical stats. Confessor rules.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Imo the best thing about the confessor class is that you will be able to get dual broadsword without needing to trade with other players or go to ng+. If you like straight swords then the best customizable one is broadsword, nothing else comes close. Broadsword is the best straight sword for pure str, pure int, pure faith, str/int, str/arc, str/faith and even pure dex with keen. So if you are a big fan of dual straight swords, dual broadsword will usually be your best option. Now of course, if you have a friend then they could just create a confessor and drop the broadsword for you. But some of use are maidenless and friendless and without ps plus. And if you only play offline, you probably don't care about upholding a meta level, so you can just overlevel and enjoy your dual broadswords.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Started out with a Confessor, struggled a bit at first. This is my second souls game (excluding sekiro, less build focused). Really enjoyed the class, managed to get faith and Dex up to around fifty each with some decent health/int/stamina. Running enough arcane for Elenoras Poleblade now and a dagger for backstabs. Once I got swarm of flies the power fantasy became real. Played into the stealth idea with cloud of smoke, distracting incantation and the bleed spells. Been fun, almost done with my first play through.

                                                                        • Anonymous

He has 23 total Int+Faith points together with Prophet and Astrologist, but let those two focus only on one attribute, because the other one is very low and for roleplaying too. Church spy Confessor who fought herecies like Fell Flame, Godslaying and other incantations, but soon he got absorbed by the Abyss that he fought against. He soon met Gideon Ofnir, a fundamentalist, who made him realise that there is Knowledge that matters. (Btw funamentalist incantations require Int-Faith too)

                                                                          • Anonymous

Church spy Confessor who fought herecies like Fell Flame, Godslaying and other incantations, but soon he got absorbed by the Abyss that he fought against. He soon met Gideon Ofnir, a fundamentalist, who made him realise that there is Knowledge that matters. (Btw funamentalist incantations require Int-Faith too)

                                                                            • Anonymous

I think this is the best starting class out of all options. You get a sword with great weapon art, strong against bosses. You get a 100% shield. Balanced stats. Urgent heal. And a badass outfit. What more can you ask for?

                                                                              • Anonymous

"b-but is stat inefficient" stfu you are a bunch of nerds.

I will play as a battle nun with my cool clothes and kill demons in the name of the lord.

                                                                                • Anonymous

I see some dissenting opinions about this class, I'll give my 5 cents:

                                                                                  >> This class works very well for some builds, especially when used with a certain "legendary sword" that requires a mix of intelligence and faith. it's a good pick if you know what you are doing and stick to it

                                                                                  >> On the other hand, it is necessary to say that initial point distribution is kinda bad! There are not many ways to optimize this class, outside of very few builds, and you will likely have 1-3 points in the trash (personally 1-3 points is almost irrelevant, but if you like Min-Max...)
Also, this class is bad if you don't know what you are doing. Pick the Vagabond class if you are a beginner.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

this class is basically Herald in DS3, which has shitty stat spread
if you plan on a dedicated Str Fth or Dex Fth build, pick Vagabond or Prophet

                                                                                    • Anonymous

This class is called Intelligencer in the unupdated version. Will this be changed? I pick the class merely by the name that will appear later on in game

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Starts out as lvl 10, the highest of any class. This will make levelling up cost more but you'll be more powerful from the start compared to other classes (vigor is at 10 though so not a good choice for tanks).

                                                                                        • Anonymous

The point in this class is to buff yourself then make attacks with a melee weapon of choice. If your needed for team fights then throw a group heal incantation.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Confessor is, imho, a poor choice for initial class...
It's a classe made for Faith builds, but that is sub-optimal on most of the said builds.
Want to go full Faith for incatation or Dexterity/faith , Prophet is beter.
Want to go Stregth/Faith, Hero and Prophet are better.
Even if you go with some kind of Int/faith build Vagabond and Prophet are, likely, better options in most cases.

Terrible class for beginners. But hey, the cloths look realy good!

                                                                                            • Interestingly, if you play the ps4 disc version without downloading any updates the shield this class starts with doesn't have 100% physical block, it has 91% instead. Makes me wonder how many other things were changed at the last minute before launch day patch

                                                                                              • Better for a Faith build overall. You need to progress a bit in order to get to Roundtable Hold, but once you do the Prophet spells are sold there for fairly cheap. Great for a incanter sword build.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

This will be the class I start with today after work. I honestly don't care what's happening at work right now. Already downloaded from early this morning and now just making it through the day....................................................................................

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

So, uh, what's the point of this class again? Other than fashion the prophet is pretty much better in every single aspect if you want to run a Faith build. This class doesn't even start with an offensive spell

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Gonna be doing Confessor for my first blind playthrough, needed something balanced skewing towards faith so this is perfect, will be running a "spellsword" type build

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

really cool looking class unfortunately as far as i can tell its not very efficient stat wise as i couldnt find a way to make it better than prophet warrior or samurai for dex/ faith or vagabond for quality/strength

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Okay looks like Miyazaki threw all the stealth utility skills to faith.
If you're the type to play the "NightBlade" class this is the most obvious choice ( besides that many Blood related weapons have requirements in faith )

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Sabaku really did this class honor in the red bull presentation event, just get a double weapon build and you are basically OP for the early game.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

I think a dex/fth hybrid could be very powerful in invasion pvp, especially since you will most likely always be outnumbered now. Force a skirmish, use the finger item to teleport away, heal yourself up with an incantation, sneak back and do a surprise attack with a bow from within a bush, repeat. Even fulfills the class fantasy of a spy/agent/dirty fighter. War of attrition.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

idk what will scale with arc yet (def some incantations, prob even a few weapons), so i don't want to start with a lot of points in that, int or vig for min/max. This looks like a great start for faith/dex or faith/quality. perfect for my sleepy monk build. i really want a conical farmer's hat and a bo-staff with a halberd or twinblade moveset.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous
