Draconic Tree Sentinel is an overworld Boss in Elden Ring. Draconic Tree Sentinel is a massive knight clad in golden armor that rides a massive horse and wields draconic magic.

Tree Sentinel is another version of this boss.

After the great ancient dragon Gransax attacked, the sentinels had an epiphany. The only way to truly protect the Erdtree was to become dragons themselves.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Draconic Tree Sentinel Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Draconic Tree Sentinel:

  • Draconic Tree Sentinel met at Capital Outskirts does not move until it spots the player, what can be used to approach him from behind and deal some damage, f.e. by inflciting Scarlet Rot.
  • Consider summoning Tragoth and/or Millicent. They can provide decent damage and can take aggro away from you.
  • Use the Rotten Breath Spell for an easy kill.
  • Bring Rot or Poison Grease.
  • Erdtree Greatshield or Carian Retaliation can parry the horse's fireballs.
  • If it's charging its shield for its lightning strike, roll the moment you see it pull the shield down.

As a general overview, Scarlet Rot is the best way to take down this boss, but if that's not accessible then Poison is second best and also strong. There is an easy cheese method to take him down that is 100% reliable and poses no risk. The cheese method is at the bottom.

Godrick's Great Rune coupled with a Rune Arc can help you survive some one hit skills, such as the fireball or Shield Lightning skills.

Its AI is notorious for shooting fireballs whenever you are at medium-to-long range from it, and it's fond of using this attack as a heal-punish. If you remain at even medium distance from it, it's not unusual for this enemy to use this attack in quick succession until you get close enough for any of its melee attacks. If you need to heal, goad it into launching a fireball, dodge to the side, then heal. You will have just enough time to roll out of the way if it responds to your heal with a second fireball.

Melee Users

As of patch 1.03, Great Horned Tragoth is available to summon for this fight. There are no triggers and he's available from level 1. This summon does ease the difficulty but it's by no means a walk in the park. Survival is the foremost priority. At least 20 Vigor, the Knight Armor, Boltdrake, and Dragoncrest Shield talismans should prevent all one-shots and allow for flask use. Alternatively, have at least 20 Endurance and block his physical damage with any 100% physical resistant shield, using Pickled Turtle Neck for stamina.

The key tactic of this fight is staying on the Sentinel's left side (your right) with the shield holding hand. While on his left, he attacks with a slower shield bash that's easier to dodge, does less damage, and allows room to counter attack. When his horse rears back, either for a fireball or stomp, is the best opportunity to roll to his left side. If using Tragoth, simply pause long enough for Tragoth to strike, this shifts his focus and you can safely flank the left/rear side.

Another tactic is using attacks which stagger and break his poise. Hammers can break the sentinel's poise in 3-4 charged heavy attacks, and with Tragoth it's easier to perform. Jumping strong attacks will also cause more stagger and are necessary as the sentinel repeatedly leaps away and repositions throughout the fight. If your HP and defense are sufficient, equipping the Claw Talisman and Raptor's Feathers increase the damage of jumping attacks.

A weakness of the sentinel that's exploitable is his low resistance to DoT (damage over time) from scarlet rot/poison. Most melee builds will not have access to scarlet rot crafting upon reaching Leyndell. However, Poison Grease and Poisonbone Dart are powerful and accessible early on. Apply the first grease at a distance, then sprint in for 2 heavy attacks before his first swing. Apply the second grease when he changes phases. Keep in mind the rot/poison resistance goes up after the first effect, so additional poisons take more hits. It may be better to use darts for the second application as they can be thrown quickly.

If you can keep his aggro focused on you/Tragoth, ranged summons will do more damage than melee summons which tend to die quickly. Because of it's ranged attacks and poison stacks, Spirit Jellyfish Ashes may be the best low-level choice since with 2 poisons it can deplete roughly 20% of his health.

When he has lost 50% of his life bar, he enters phase 2 and adds lightning attacks to his kit. The lightning on his weapon adds AoE distance to his ground slam, so either roll inside the circle or keep a good distance to avoid the larger AoE. He casts a lightning bolt which is telegraphed by raising the shield hand. As soon as the shield drops, roll to avoid the bolt. When he calls a lightning storm, stay back until it clears as he will do a swiping attack with his shield at the same time.

Magic and Ranged Users

Draconic Tree Sentinel is much heavier than the known Tree Sentinel, with stronger attacks that have added area of effect and more options to strike you at range. Their mount shoots fireballs constantly whenever you are at a long distance from them. And it's very recommended to use your mount moving in circles around them while throwing projectiles. Bring lots of ammunition and bring heavy ammunition if you can. It can be simple to throw attacks all the time, but it's still very tedious as this enemy wears heavy armor.

One the Knight enters to phase 2, it may be recommended to always keep distance and switch between being mounted and unmounted, unmounted to dodge and defend and mounted to attack while moving. Mind the area you are moving, as there are trees around that may block you by surprise and some of the Knight attacks are very unforgiving, as some are even able to one-shot some players. Spirit Ashes are very helpful, but don't use them as distraction, instead you distract the Knight while the spirits attack them, keep them focused on you. Don't expect much as spirits will be eventually defeat as the Knight's attacks affect large area of effect.

Faith casters: Upgrade your sacred seal to +14 for S tier incant scaling. 2 stacks of scarlet rot and chip damage from lightning spear is all that's necessary to defeat the sentinel. Most of his attacks are easily dodged from a distance, just be wary of his leaping slam which has a large AoE sphere. Before the fight, use a physick with Cerulean Hidden Tear and Opaline Bubbletear to make Rotten Breathe free to cast and prevent damage from the first hit. Stand far enough away so that just the edge of the blast hits him. Although lightning spear won't deal heavy damage, it's okay because one rotten breath removes 30% of his HP. If you have trouble applying the second stack of scarlet rot, save your spirit summon until after the first stack of scarlet rot wears out. Once he aggros the summon you have time to cast it.

 Poison Mist Cheese Method

This method uses Poison Mist incantation, Finger Seal, and Cerulean Flasks to replenish FP. To cast Poison Mist safely you will need to sneak behind the Sentinel. There are 2 ways, you can summon a spirit ash to distract him, move to the fog gate, quit to main menu and reload. Or you can simply hug the wall on his right side, sneaking while crouched down and you can circle around him. Either way once you're behind him safely, repeatedly cast Poison Mist. It requires 2-3 casts to poison him. The AI doesn't recognize this as an attack since it deals no direct damage, and the sentinel won't move/attack. Once the poison eventually wears off, cast to apply again until he dies. This process takes 10-15 minutes as the poison takes time to tick down.

To gain Faith, use Commoner's Garb (+1), Ruler's Mask (+1), Two Fingers Heirloom (+5),  or a Rune Arc with Godrick's great rune (+5).

Draconic Tree Sentinel Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Hammer Attack Hits the ground violently with his massive hammer. Roll towards his shield side if possible, otherwise back up.
Quick Hammer Strike Perceivably NO windup frames, from idle he instantly brings his hammer down. Stand/ fight on his shield side.
Lunging Strike The boss lunges with his horse and slams his hammer down. If your not close to him he'll run up to you first. After the boss does some ranged attacks he reengages you with this. Roll away from him to avoid combo. With good positioning you can roll directly to your right, aiming to pass his horse's head to get to his shield side.
Sentinel’s Slam Horse rears back as the boss holds his hammer menacingly over his head for a long time. Then brings it down to a massive AOE which will catch you if you are near midrange. The boss tracks the player the entire wind up. Roll or more easily full retreat, farther than you think. Safe area to roll is behind him after he commits and stops tracking you.
Horse Stomp Horse rears back and attempts to stomp on you. His horse will track you and pivot until a moment/ animation commit, then will lung forward stomping down. If melee strafe behind him, otherwise back up.

Horse Stomp
(Hammer)

Horse rears back like Horse Stomp combined with the hammer raised high. It will bring the hammer down with a quick follow-up. If melee strafe to shield side, otherwise back up.
Fireball The Sentinel’s steed shoots a fireball. Mainly used to punish healing from afar. Roll, either to the sides or forward. Can be parried with Golden Retaliation or Carian Retaliation.
Rearing
Fireball (Close-range)
The steed rears up and shoots a fireball below it. Roll towards shield side, forward for melee.
Shield -
Backwards Swipe
Brings his shield in front of him then swipes backwards. Has longer reach than other shield attacks. Roll, forward for melee.
Shield -
Forward Swipe
Brings his shield behind him then swipes forward. Roll, forward for melee.
Shield -
Forward Swipe
(Repositions)
Appears the same as Forward Swipe, but the wind up is perceivably slower. After attacking the boss leaps away and repositions. Roll.
Shield -
Smash
Brings shield down in a straight line. Roll, forward for melee.
Shield -
Double Smash
Brings shield down quickly twice. First attack appears identical to the single Smash Roll and roll, both forward for melee. If caught can still roll away from second strike.
Shield -
Delayed Smash
Holds shield above his head then slams it down. Can either strafe to his back staying on shield side or roll, forward for melee.
Phase 2
Lightning Strike Raises shield imbued with lightning and swipes his shield sideways. This summons a random field of incoming lightning strikes with hurtboxes larger than they appear. Safe: Full retreat
Risky: If you can see the incoming lightning on the ground you can avoid it. Quickly backpedal to find a safe area to stand in whenever he imbues calls lightning, then move to the safe area.
Honed Bolt He raises his shield imbued with lightning and brings it straight down. This sends a targeted lightning strike down on you. Will trigger if outside his melee range.

Two options:
1) Watch his shield. As he brings it down the lightning will strike in time with that motion. DO NOT roll forward, seems player animation gets caught by lightning.
2) Standing under his shield bugs out the targeting, no roll necessary.

Thunderous Smite Raises his hammer, now with imbued lightning except the AOE is *even bigger* and sends out seemingly random lightning rippling out, effectively tripling the attack radius. The only safe roll area is inside the area where his mace strikes or behind him after he commits and stops tracking you. The lightning ripples will hit you anywhere else.
Lightning Wave The sentinel places his hammer on the ground behind him with horse crouched low then rips his weapon forward, shooting out a massive wave of lightning. Has extremely long range. The tracking on this is insane and this move will end a run since he *combos* it with a follow up Thunderous Smite and possibly another Lightning Wave. Positioning is critical. If you are close you can run towards his horses head and roll into his mace before he attacks. Otherwise you have to roll through the wave.

The sentinel outside Leyndell will spam fireballs at you unless you practically ride his ass. Any space will trigger a fireball. Sometimes his own jumping attack will put him in range to trigger another fireball so you can't avoid it. I have counted as many as five fireballs in a row. Kind of annoying.

Cerulean Hidden Tear + Comet Azur if you sneak and wait for him to stop and stand in the small grass on the left side (he won't spot you). You're welcome.

Finally got the Farum Azula one by using dual Scavenger's Curved Swords. Strength/arcane build, seppuku on offhand and bloodhound step. Flamedrake Talisman, Boltdrake Talisman, Lord of Blood's Exultation and Rotten Winged Sword Insignia.
Stayed very close, spammed jump attacks mostly from behind. Despite his bleed resistance, I was able to proc bleed 3-4 times during the fight.

I put Carian Retaliation before fighting that one on the bridge before the Maliketh fight.
It made the fight much easier.
Instead of trying to get in attacks while dodging fireballs and his giant swings, I just parried the fireballs from the horse and let the glintstone daggers do the damage. The only thing I still had to worry about was dodging at the right time for his lightning bolt attacks, but that's not too bad once you get a feel for their delay

Try using Golden Parry (found nearby) on some of his big melee attacks. They can be surprisingly easy to land. Other than that just learn the dodge timings and try to stay in his face. and don't bother with Torrent

A boss that is miserable attempted solo, and trivialised with summons. Wish there weren't so many like that in this game.

I find fighting the one at capital gates on horseback much easier than on foot. Torrent allows you to easily get hits in and outspace his attacks, tho you might want to temporarily dismount during phase 2 . You can outrun his honed bolt both on horseback and on foot, I think I even managed to strafe it once, but it's less consistent and reliable than just dodging normally. I dismounted on run and had just enough time to roll, but I think you probably can dodge it using dismounting I-frames, albeit I didn't tested.

I managed to cheese the Farum Azula Sentinel by using the invisibility spell and a +7 staff of loss to get past him, as soon as he stopped moving and stood in the middle of the bridge I snuck close and used poison cloud to get him down.

it's not the coolest way to do it, but you can just lame him out by doing nothing but Carian Retaliation against the fireballs

For every cool boss in this game, there's like five or six other really **** ones. This is one of the bullshit ones. FromSoft got really cute designing some of these smoothbrain ass bosses.

I dual wielded daggers to take him down - Black Knife and Scorpion Stinger. Hit him with Rotten Breath when you have a free shot at the start, and then just dodge and slash. The Scorpion Stinger finishes the Scarlet Rot proc, and occasionally hit him with the Blade of Death weapon skill from the Black Knife. BOD has the added benefit of not getting hit by his fireball during the jump animation. I tried a few times to cast Golden Lightning Fortification on myself during phase 2, but between the fireballs and lightning, never had time and it just got me killed. Easier to just roll and dodge the lightning when the shield comes down.

Halo Scythe (+9) made this easy. Spammed Miquella's Rings Of Light and took 75% off his health before he got his first attack in. (in farum azula)

                                    • Anonymous

Genuinely found the Farum Azula one to be a really enjoyable fight. It was difficult, and took me a while to work out his moves, but once you've done that there is plenty of time to dodge and he has lots of punishable attacks. Killed him two-handing Bloodhound's Fang, rolling through his attacks and using a combination of finesse and jump attacks.

I was able to beat him by spamming impaling thrust over and over. wondrous physic to increase stance break + alexanders + talisman to reduce FP usage. Basically I just did it over and over and stance broke him so much I took very little damage.

this was after 10-20 attempts using non cheese methods.

beat using a strength build using watchdog's staff and magic damage buffs, very good combo for both draconic tree sentinels

it's genuinely like 2/3 of this game is unironically a masterpiece, and then theres a select few areas/enemies that were designed by some neanderthal intern. its actually bewildering how annoyingly designed this is- ultimately made worse by what already makes the game annoying

                                            • Anonymous

Cheesed the Farum Azula one, just lock-on full Comet Azul at him and run away (still locked on to dodge fireballs) til he respawns at the top. 60 int killed him in about 4 laps up and down. Bummed he couldn’t be beaten normally, I can see a version of him being really fun to fight

                                              • Anonymous

This boss is so trash. He does way too much damage for where he is in the game, he attacks far too fast considering the equipment he’s using, his AOEs are so much bigger than they need to be, and that fireball is one of the most annoying attacks in the entire game. He literally spammed that **** 15 consecutive times during one of my runs.

                                                • Anonymous

I love when he hits you with a followup attack while your still down from his first one before you can react. I would rather fight 3 normal tree sentinels than this guy again

                                                  • Anonymous

The one as Farum Azula was a challenge. Tried different tactics until I found one that worked: first, tried a "hit and run" but the lightning strike will get you if you don't track the shield going down (even face on I couldn't dodge it every time).

Then tried the Greatbow from distance but he tended to reset back to the fog gate after some time and I got bored waiting for him to trot back down.

Eventually, I went with Knight's Greatsword (w. Sacred Blade) and Banished Knight's Shield. The shield block and R2 counter worked well up close but really annoying when the horse fireball comes when you are too close and trying to use a flask, as there's no time to dodge. Tried to stick close to him and used Sacred Blade L2 when he rode off to turn around. Phase 2: stayed away from the lightning flames before the lightning strikes and just kept up the same strategy. Talismans: Sacred Scorpion, Curved Sword and Dragoncrest Greatshield. Start with lightning/fire negations and stock up on lightning/fire proof livers.

                                                    • Anonymous

If you have trouble evading his tracking lightning, watch closely. The movement of his shield telegraphs the impact. Once you figured that one out, you know when to roll. Rot and poison triggers slowly , but can save some nerves to finish him off in save distance. His shield is a good counter plus damage against the fireballspam of the horse in later battles. In the Azula version, he will eventually move away from the battle slowly if progressed down the area far enough, if you feel like cheese is in order.

                                                      • Anonymous

This thing is so annoying. Never have I had a boss interrupt me mid action more than this one cause of those stupid fireballs.

                                                        • Anonymous

The best strategy is Poison or Rot and run away, with a bit poison or rot and run away mixed in, and then maybe poison or rot and run away, finally don't forget that poison or rot and running away works pretty good too!

                                                          • So I recently had a play through where I had 3 NPC summons. Millicent, Targoth and Blackguard Boggart i think. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to use my ashes with that many summons but that wasn’t a problem. I just sat back and watched them go to town. I haven’t locked down how I had 3 yet but I just started my ng+8 and I think I have it this time. I’ll post footage asap.

what really drives me up a wall is that his hammer side attacks have such a stupidly huge aoe they hit you behind the horse and even all the way on the shield side man

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  FOR THOSE STRUGGLING:

Equip the composite bow (mine was +14) get 50 scarlet rot arrows and 50 normal arrows.

Keep your distance from him and well out of his attack range, stay locked onto him and keep him to the right side of your screen, always moving to the left away from him. If he charges you, RUN TOWARDS HIM, ROLL DODGE HIS ATTACK AND CONTINUE RUNNING! He is not very agile! Otherwise stay far away!

With the dodge roll attack of the composite bow, you can always punish attack any action of his and have time to roll away from a fireball or lightning bolt. The fireball has an easy tell, you can dodge attack even during a volley if you time it right. When he lifts his shield up for a lightning bolt, start running to the left - he will push his shield up just a little before bringing it down - dodge as he brings it back down, you will either dodge or simply run out of the way.

I normally struggle with this guy but using this technique I can do a no-hit run on him every time.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

Rolling into the fireballs usually works once you have the timing down and giant hunt staggers it pretty well so you just have to stay on the offensive as much as you can.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            1. Use a bow with long range and the Arrow's Reach Talisman to attract him.

Don't be too greedy - use only one or two fully charged shots, then dodge and run away in the back. Be aware that he can still reach you with his lightning inside the building.

                                                                            3. Fully heal, get back and repeat until he is down.

                                                                            • You don't have to defeat the GA at Windmill Village to summon Milli for DTS, you only have to spawn him. I just verified this on an NG vanilla save. Considering that if you spawn him you're probably going to fight him the article is probably fine as is, but if someone is even more pedantic than me they could always verify themselves and edit it.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

The Farum Azula version absolutely sucks, main reason being the sheer amount of spamming projectiles that can one shot or nearly one shot you.

First phase his physical attacks (weapon and shield) are pretty slow but deal a bunch of damage, however they really aren't too hard to dodge as long as you stay close. He always raises either the weapon or shield before he attacks, once he drops the raised arm you should be able to roll through most attacks and get behind him for a free hit or two. Be warned though, the window to counter this dude (including healing) is very, very small. If you're using larger weapons or slow incantations DO NOT get greedy. Buffing with a DOT ailment like poison/rot/blood definitely helps.

Second phase of the fight is a bunch of BS, as he gains red lightning attacks that have massive hitboxes. I've been killed by this dude so many times from the overhead slam attack because somehow the attack's range extends behind the freaking horse.

I find this enemy is much more manageable if you use a quick hitting weapon and use a big shield to tank most of his attacks, and guard counter. His poise is high, but not unbreakable, and when you do break him I suggest using the lull to either heal or buff as he's one of those enemies you can't crit hit. Good luck and happy hunting!

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

So I assassins gambitted past him on the far left and kept going till he was disinterested, had slightly noticed me, then poison missed him. Not dealing with 10 fire balls in a row from mid to close range.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • I LOVE WHEN THE FARUM AZULA SENTINEL CAN GET AN EXTRA FIREBALL OR A HALBERD SLAM OR SOME OTHER LIGHTNING ATTACK OUT OF NOWHERE. I LOVE WHEN ATTACK ANIMATIONS ARE IDENTICAL WHETHER THEY ARE ABOUT TO FINISH THEIR COMBO OR ADD ANOTHER ATTACK ONTO IT.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

No Torrent, no spirit ashes, just one of the shittiest bosses in the game attacking you through a fog gate. I wonder if Miyazaki even played this far

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

This is completely backwards logic, and makes it harder to learn the bosses movesets the first couple tries. Not game-breaking, but still bothersome.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

Poor beasts just keep spitting fire like there is no tomorrow... Bad case of cruelty to animals, if I have ever seen one.

Probably after it turns ashen. I never fought it and it's not there. Don't have the weapon or shield and it's not in my list of bosses beaten. I've beaten the game and am trying to collect all the weapons I don't need to farm for. Another L Miyazaki has handed me for not exploring the way he wants me to.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Then come me back to the boss arena and cheese him from there as he can't enter the arena. Hahaha. So satisfying as I was losing my marbles with this guy.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

As someone wielding katanas, I swear to god the DTS guarding Malekith is harder than the boss itself. Almost same resists, same 35% slash resistance, but with 30% more HP. Same-ish lethality and trigger happiness at range but at least there are pillars for Malekith. Sticking close ime is also safer for Malekith since just rolling towards him will eventually get you to his back which is the safe side. The DTS by virtue of being mounted is harder to get to its back, so the other option is hug its shield side and that's a bit trickier.

                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

I fight him on horse until second phase and dismount. His attacks are not that hard to dodge but deals lots of damage

                                                                                                                              • Anonymous

His moveset is pretty simple and his moves are very telegraphed. The only difficult one to figure out is the triple lightning bolt he does. You need to watch his shield and dodge when he pulls it down.

                                                                                                                                • Anonymous

I died to him like 5 times before jut going to Placidusax. I beat Placidusax in two tries and leveled up and came back to this dude, and got destroyed another 10 times. I got annoyed and ended up just cheesing it. A fully charged elzykes decay procs rot, and then you can just sprint away and use long range spells. I got him to like 10% health like this before running out of flasks, so make sure you bring enough blue

                                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

The majority of his attacks explode, so there's no moving out of the way. It's just quick time events all over again, press X to avoid. But they don't look like explosions, surprise! The delays on his swings are all different - can you say rollcatch - and the lightning wave can't be dodged thru or jumped over, so if you're in the wrong spot it's a flask tax. Also they couldn't bring themselves to cut any of the suuper cool moves so the AI is flailing about with a set of a dozen moves, 3 or 4 of which work in any given context, so you have no idea what he is going to do.

                                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

It is way too hard for a solo player to know when to dodge the lightnings when he raises the shield upward. It's also completely inconsistent as on horseback I could sometimes avoid the lightnings, sometimes not for unknown reason. This kind of attack shouldn't have a place in a Souls game. Same thing for Thunderbolt AoW, this kind of **** shouldn't exist in this game.

                                                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Went and grabbed my Bloodhound Fang (didn't respec - had 37 dex but not enough str, so had to 2-hand the sword; only enough Faith to buff with FGMS and Bloodflame). Killed him comfortably on first try doing mostly L2/R2 combos; oddly enough he was getting staggered fairly easily by that. Bloodhound Fang for the win!

When it uses the Honed bolt attack in phase 2, using any airborne dragon move, ex: Agheel's Flame and Smarag's Glintstone Breath would make the bolts not deal any damage. I'm unsure if others like incantations like Placidusax's ruin have the same exploit because i don't have them. But it's a nice exploit to use if you're having trouble looking for a good opening.
