Armor Sets Comparison Table | Elden Ring Wiki

I think there was a genuine mistake and oversite by FromSoft in how armors' damage negation works. Currently every armor piece is multiplied separately, meaning that they actually reduce damage by less than if their defenses were added together first. I highly suspect that the negation values of armor sets were balanced around being added together and not separately multiplied, but the mistake was never noticed and I will explain why I believe this. Armors typically give better defenses, especially physical, the heavier they are, but have diminished returns compared to how much the armor weighs, which isn't an abnormal concept compared to other numerical scalings in Elden Ring. The thing is though, the diminished returns start to fall off a cliff to an absurd degree that they simply wouldn't if each piece was added together first. If this was the only thing of note I would just assume FromSoft hates poise boys and end it here, but there is more. This game is not supposed to be easy, yet other sources of physical negation like combining a talisman with eating crab, both of which don't require any levels spent to use or medium roll with, somehow give about the same physical negations as a full set of heavy armor which requires around level 40 endurance or possibly even more carry weight. Now here is where things get REALLY suspicious: If armor pieces added their physical negations together then heavy armors would make the user take about 10% less total physical damage and maybe 5% less elemental damage, depending on the armor set. Heavy armors also give higher POISE which will be relevant. In one of the big PvP updates, FromSoft made hyperarmor, aka. big POISE attacks, grant some built in damage negations against players since heavy armor wasn't up to par. It's almost as if heavy armors weren't granting as much damage negations as first expected. BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE! By the progression point that many players would be putting more points into Endurance to use heavier armors they would likely be getting near the Mountaintops of the Giants. This area is notorious for having an unexpected increase in enemy damage, even compared to later game area transitions. This damage increase would not have been NEARLY as abnormal compared to the rest of the game's difficulty progression if armor sets added their negations together instead of multiplying together for further diminished returns. Overall maybe I'm crazy and maybe it doesn't matter that much, but I do think FromSoft fumbled somewhere with damage negations and I hope, but doubt, that it will get evened out in a future update. Damn Bandai Namco and their lack of ways to submit bug reports...

FromSoft should have made all of the damage reductions from armor pieces in different slots add together as a single reduction multiplier. I think they might have even meant to, as a lot of sets have more rounded total values before the diminished multipliers are taken into account. Now hear me out OK?

If you add the physical reductions of the Bull-Goat set pieces together you get a clean 45% damage reduction, but since the game separates them you actually get 38.50510756% damage reduction. Basically if the pieces properly combined together you could take about 12% more physical damage before dying.

Now remember how much the difficulty in Elden Ring seems to spike out of nowhere when you get into the Mountaintops of the Giants? Isn't that about when someone would normally start equipping ultra heavy armors like the Bull-Goat set if they were leveling Endurance?

I think this could possibly be an unintentional "game balancing" mistake that was simply ignored.

It's worth noting that the wiki displays the stats for armor sets added together instead of the multiplication that the game will use to calculate your damage negation stats. The difference between the calculations is negligible when comparing armor sets, but it does cause a large discrepancy between the number shown here and the number you would see in-game when equipping multiple pieces.

The best set (Poise + Weight) is the Mausoleum Knight Set and Greathelm for the mid game, you get 44 Poise for only 28.9 Weight in total. The set is easily farmable from a knight by Black Knife Catacombs and you buy the Greathelm from a Nomadic Merchant. Will work great if you have GreatSword/GreatSpear and a shield, you don't need much in Endurance to med roll.
