Iron Cleaver is a Axe in Elden Ring. The Iron Cleaver scales primarily with Dexterity and Strength and is a good Weapon for aggressive fighters who like to face foes head on. This weapon allows players to take swing after swing especially with the Skill, Wild Strikes

Fairly large iron cleaver, commonly used by the maltreated Misbegotten.

Steeped in resentment, these weapons are swung wildly and relentlessly, often after rushing up to foes.

Where to Find Iron Cleaver in Elden Ring

The Iron Cleaver weapon can be found at the following location:

  • Castle Morne. Dropped by the Misbegotten creatures using this weapon.
  • Leyndell, Royal Capital: Chance to drop from the Misbegotten enemies that can be found behind the big door. [Map Link]
  • To farm easily: go to Castle Morne and unlock "Behind the Castle" Grace. Warp here. Run west , drop down rocks then off castle. There are 3 sleeping on that ledge and one more in the room to your right with the prisoner spirit. Easy backstabs, farm without any fighting

Elden Ring Iron Cleaver Notes & Tips

  • Weapon SkillWild Strikes.
  • This weapon can be infused with Ashes of War and buffed with Magic and Consumables.
  • Iron Cleaver can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones.
  • Iron Cleavers are used by Misbegotten creatures.
  • This weapon has a unique Moveset shared with the Celebrant's Cleaver.
    • The R1 is a fast, close-range series of chopping attacks that do not have the same wide arc as other axes, but hits slightly faster
    • The R2 is a forward running overhead chop, a second R2 will give you another overhead chop, but no extra run (useful for following up on staggered enemies).  Charging the attack will cause you to run a very significant distance, offsetting this weapon's otherwise weak range and allowing for some extremely aggressive offense.
  • This specialized moveset makes it play extremely different than a typical axe-type weapon.  The run-up from the charged strong attack is long enough that you can initiate the move from a relatively safe distance, while maintaining the high damage of the charged attack.  Paired with the Axe Talisman it can make for an extremely lethal weapon, even at high levels.
    • Combining the charged attack with high poise armor (at least 51) will allow you to shake off the attacks of quicker enemies while you are running toward them.
    • Powerstancing with this weapon in the right hand allows you to utilize the raw damage of dual wielding weapons, while still keeping the charged heavy attack available to close distance in fights.
    • Immediately charging the heavy attack coming out of a dodge roll will allow you to aggressively counterattack against enemies that might have otherwise moved out of range.
    • An offhand greatshield can help offset some of the weaknesses of this weapon, leveraging the fast and powerful guard counter that Axe-type weapons have.  This is particularly useful against enemies that would otherwise interrupt the charged attack.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 100
  • Base drop rate is 2% (at 100 Discovery)
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.08, the speed and distance of some attacks have been increased and the recovery time has been reduced. Also the stagger damage of Axes’ guard counters has been increased. PVP's poise damage has also been reduced with this patch.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.
  • Physical damage updated as of Patch 1.08.

The Iron Cleaver can be infused with Ashes of War. Click below for a list of all possible Ashes of War that can be applied to the axe weapon.

Iron Cleaver Poison Upgrades

Requires regular reinforcement with Smithing Stone [1]Smithing Stone [2]Smithing Stone [3]Smithing Stone [4]Smithing Stone [5]Smithing Stone [6]Smithing Stone [7]Smithing Stone [8], and Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, as well as Poison Affinity Ashes of War.

Elden Ring display values for poison and blood include buildup added by scaling via the Arcane Stat. The values on this table reflect the default values only. Your own Arcane Scaling will alter the number while inside the game. If you don't meet the arcane requirements for an arcane-scaling passive then buildup will show as 60% of the base values.

This upgrade cannot be enchanted with Magic or boosted with Consumables.

Ah not funny to fight against this weapon in the arena especialy if you're not confronted with that often. Imo it's too fast and stuns hard.. but it's silverlining ofc: everyone who's using it weren't toxic but honest. Have fun with this guys

God dangit. This was in my iventory the entire game without me ever giving it a try only to find out after defeating all the main bosses that this is the best axe?

synergises very well with the shield bash and crash ashes of war, crash especially. any enemy that gets knocked down by the crash can be immediately followed up on with an r2 (including malenia). put frost on your greatshield for even more damage thanks to the resistance shred.

absolute monster. S scaling in strength, extremely spammable r1s and an amazing r2. you can stack all the consecutive attack and charge attack buff talismans and physick tears to have an extremely powerful moveset for some chops. spam r1 to stack the winged sword buffs then use r2 for a CHUNKY finisher.

here's a good build for this weapon:
80 str, a lot of stamina, millicent's prosthesis, rotten sword insignia, axe talisman. last talisman is up to you, I switch between turtle, godskin swaddling cloth and ritual sword. physick should have the thorny and spiked cracked tears. finally, use cragblade to boost the damage even further and have the turtle shield on your back for even more stamina.

Just put on Cragblade on this bad boy and spam light attack until the opponent get deleted from the game, typically unga bunga moment.

This has to be one of the most obnoxious weapons to fight in pvp lol though its mostly because I can't stop laughing my a$$ off when I see someone tiptoe dancing towards me with it.

                • Anonymous

Just fought Malenia with this thing, +25 Cold Infused on a 60 Str 40 Int build, Cragblade aow, Light equip load, Blue Dancer Charm, Axe Talisman, Ritual Sword Talisman, Dagger Talisman, Stonebarb and Spiked Crystal Tears for the flask and Stormhawk Deenh Ashes for extra damage buff. Over 1k damage and frost buildup on 2 charged attacks. Such a beastly weapon 10/10

if you don't feel like swapping to a quickstep weapon, this one's R2 is also pretty great for getting through those pesky poison/lava pools

Played some low-level invasions the other day with Determination and this cleaver, a good couple times I outright oneshot poor unsuspecting hosts with the charged heavy. If any of you are reading this, I want you to know that I'm sorry. I didn't realize the extent of my power, and I was irresponsible.

                      • Anonymous

the blend of the quick r1s and the chasing r2 lets you play this weapon with the best of both worlds in talismans. you can use winged sword insignias to easily proc their buffs, and the axe talisman + charged attack tear to boost that r2 damage. because it's an r2, you can use it right after a roll without accidentally doing a dodging attack, and the distance from the charge up lets you take advantage of spacing even on such a short weapon. I recommend using royal knight's resolve if you go for the charge attack a lot, or cragblade if you use r1s more.

Hopefully cleavers get their own weapon class someday, with a moveset as wild as this one. There are currently five "cleavers" in the game; two axes, one greataxe, and two curved greatswords. Throw the Butchering Knife and Scalesword in there too, I wish I could swing them all like this!

                          • Anonymous

Maybe one of the few pure strength weapons that greatly benefit from the Winged Insignia talismans, this weapon is a beast

Pretty disgusting low level PvP weapon. Easy to farm, high damage, insanely good w/ endure and determination, plus its best attribute, the standing CR2, can be buffed up from the talisman and crystal tear you get in limgrave. You don't need to be a filthy twink to make a disgusting build in this game, which is why i love it so much.

                              • Anonymous

Why does it have the damage of a greatsword but the moveset of a club? This thing is literally the easy mode of strength builds, malenia don't stand a chance with how many R2s I get to dish out. Amazing for pvp too, hitting like a halberd but at carian slicer speeds, and cragblade is just overkill at this point. Feel more like a caveman than when I use the club weapons.

This weapon facilitates aggression like no other. Fight like you're angry, it's what the Iron Cleaver is made for

I can only see this as the Kool Aid weapon. It scales exceptionally well on Flame and Sacred, has an overcommitted, almost falling backwards (and extremely good), R2, and an axe murderer R1 spam. Everything about this whole weapon screams psycho zealot. 10/10 do use with Flaming Strike and Sacred Blade.

                                      • Anonymous

I hate the drop rates of this game, I legit did 2 hours of nonstop farming to try and get this weapon but it seems the game just doesn’t give it to you at all. Garbage

A weapon that allows you to move while attacking and close distance with no downtime, in a Soulsborne game in which every action has a massive amount of commitment to it, is HUGE. You can attack around corners with ease, you can chain attack different members of a group like a psychopathic Assassin's Creed character, you can add AoW that already close distance like Sword Dance to ensure that no man nor God will outpace you... it's actually kinda nuts.

                                          • Anonymous

I prefer the Celebrant's Cleaver for the fashion, but my god do these feel good. Never mind the R2, the R1 is so insanely fast.

                                            • Anonymous

A great weapon when you want to dual wield "curved swords" with zero dex investment. Goofy and ridiculously strong R2 is also a plus

                                              • Anonymous

Terrible range but the charge heavy is ****ing insane. You can initiate the charge heavy right after a roll or back step and pressure people so hard. After hunting people in pvp and getting invaded some, I can say that they usually start running while you chase them like a horror movie.
                                                Definitive horror movie weapon

                                                • Anonymous

Do not underestimate this weapon. This thing can chain three or four hits together like it's dark souls 3 and delete entire health bars through veteran's armor. Undoubtedly the absolute best PvP axe for having chasedown potential unlike its competitors, and its club moveset R1s make for great PvE DPS in combination with buff spells or ashes of war.

                                                  • This thing hits like a freight train when heavy infused and with 60+ STR. Use Axe Talisman, Spiked Cracked Tear, and maybe even Cragblade or Determination/RKR (Don't use cry arts that change the heavy moveset) to dish out Colossal Weapon damage with a small axe. Abuse the heck out of this thing's charged heavy and you turn the game into easy mode. The strong attack even works well in PvP if you know how to use it (it's great for rollcatching).

                                                    • Anonymous

Holy Sht, the R1 speed buff is bonkers. With Endure, I can do 3-4 hits per cast. Sure Carian Slicer would probably deal more damage but now I have a Str option to do the same.

                                                      • Anonymous

this weapon was already pretty good, but the recent buff to the speed of axe guard counters, cleaver style light attacks, and the hyper armor on the shield bash AOW have made this thing an absolute monster when paired with a great shield.

                                                        • Anonymous

Is it just me or does the shovel-esque handle somewhat ruin the look? I get that its most likely a repurposed tool, but removing those sidebars would make it so much more of a viable fashion souls choice.

                                                          • Anonymous

bringing back the old reliable space an attack then punish playstyle (ds1 was never hard). I've been trying to play around with different builds involving magic but then I tried this with full strength and alot of armor and idk what I've been doing. THIS IS SO MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE THAN ANYTHING ELSE I'VE BEEN DOING.

                                                            • Anonymous

For PvP, I highly recommend using this with Beast Roar. Open with a running or jumping R1 to get opponent rolling. Follow up with charged R2 to go for the first rollcatch. Follow that up with L2 for a second rollcatch. You'll get one if not both the majority of the time. Couple with the Axe and Roar Talismans to up the damage.

                                                              • Anonymous

Not sure why people complain about the r1 combo- it's so much faster than the regular axe moveset and mostly vertical for bonking small enemies

                                                                • Anonymous

If you use the charged R2 and rapidly run around in circles, it is perhaps the most hilarious and chaotic attack you will ever witness.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Strange how the handle has sidebars, wonder if it is in actuality a repurposed tool, like the glaive, brick hammer or pickaxe.

                                                                    • Anonymous

The charged heavy attack is great. if you only use it to close distance with a boss, you can actually close the distance and hit with a charged attack at the same time, making the concept of charging irrelevant. so instead of moving towards a boss for a punish just use this instead and kill two birds with one stone.

                                                                      • Anonymous

This is basically identical to the stone club. Same moveset. Very slightly lower damage/stamina but very slightly higher strength bonus.

                                                                        • Anonymous

If you're using this at all, use it with the Cragblade War Ash and space enemies with that disgusting charged R2
(bonus if you have the Axe talisman)
This weapon isn't very good, but it is brilliantly stupid in PVP and PVE

                                                                          • Anonymous

In pvp, Storm stomp > r1 is guaranteed, can sometimes get them with a charged r2 afterwards if they start panic rolling and by then they're probably almost dead.

                                                                            • Anonymous

The R1 seems to be the same/similar to the club's R1 attacks, which means they have next to no range and cover a small area, but they come out decently quick. Can finish something off but your bread and butter will be the r2's. I find this is a great weapon for casters that want a weapon to bonk stuff that comes too close since nobody will be expecting an aggressive charge from a caster.

                                                                              • Iron Cleaver + Hammer Talisman + Spike Cracked Tear Physic+ Cragblade/Determination = Death. Seriously tho that Charged R2 is nuts. The AI just doesn't know how to react to it if you space it right. It's a shame you can't combine it with the Roar Talisman, one of the roars, and the Highland axe to make it even better.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Run west , drop down rocks then off castle. There are 3 sleeping on that ledge and one more in the room to your right with the prisoner spirit. Easy backstabs, farm without any fighting :)

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Catches people off guard and panic roll only to subsequently get caught by your psycho ass. Slasher film enthusiasts rejoice!

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I killed the group on the firey hill every time I went on the way to the knight and pair of misbegottens, but ended up receiving the item from one of the misbegottens on the hill.

Axe Talisman, spiked cracked tear physik, Royal Knight's Resolve ash of war, preferably unga bunga high strength to use heavy infusion. Buff up with physik in fight, and before each attack use Royal Knight's resolve, and because of the movement of the R2, you can space attacks and get a full charge heavy off. 2k+ damage typically per hit, sometimes more depending on enemies and boss weak points. Absolutely amazing to use and very potent in power. Have fun kiddos.

                                                                                                  • Like another comment mentioned, I can confirm this drops from ANY Misbegotten in Castle Morne that carries it, not just the one mentioned in the guide above, and yes this includes the ones chanting in the castle courtyard as soon as you enter.

Fastest farming method I found was this:

                                                                                                    1. Start from the Castle Morne Lift site of grace, and go up the lift.
                                                                                                    2. Enter the courtyard and sneak up on the Misbegotten directly in front of you and slightly to the right, with its back to you. This is also the one closest to the entrance.
                                                                                                    3. Backstab it, and this will aggro the two Misbegottens to its left and right, but none of the other ones including the big one at the top of the mound.
                                                                                                    4. Kill all three, and if it doesn't drop, warp back to the site of grace and try again.

All three carry the cleaver so all three have a chance of dropping it. Each run shouldn't take more than a minute or two.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

It has good strength scaling and when you charge your R2 you run towards your enemy, while charging. Dont know how good its in PVP, but definitely very fun and good in PVE. Only downside maybe is the short range

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

"Where to get it" mentions it dropping from a specific enemy, but it actually drops from any Misbegotten in Castle Morne that wields it. I haven't tested if it also drops from the ones you can find outside of Castle Morne.
