Large crossbow made from composite materials. One of the largest of all bolt firing devices.

Its limbs are more pliable than metallic ones, allowing bolts fired from this weapon to pierce even forged of steel.

I found that the heavier crossbows also have a "shattershard arrow" type effect that will distract enemies, making them move toward the point of impact of the fired bolt. Might come in handy sometimes.

      • They could substantially buff the damage of every crossbow, and I don't think it would feel unfair. They could give them the ability to change the Ash of War to something like No Skill so you could still use your main hand skill, and I don't think that it would feel unfair. They could give them scaling regardless of if it makes sense or not because Bows have scaling and that makes about as much sense, and I don't think it would feel unfair. They could give use more options for Bolts to use that have increased damage or special abilities that do things beyond inflicting damage or status, like Gravity Bolts that pull you towards the shooter, and it wouldn't feel unfair. I love using Crossbows, if only From Software felt the same way I do.

I'm reading comments saying how powerful this weapon is, I have it at +5 at stormveil castle and it takes 3-4 bolts to take out one banished soldier (not the knights, it's a waste of time to even try) am I doing something wrong? It just seems like a waste of time when my +5 longsword is a 2-strike kill...

What with the random Dex requirement increases in this game? In DS3 there's like 4 crossbows(including arbalest) that need 8 Dex to wield, perfet for the least dexterous class - cleric (RIP). Well at least the light and soldier's crossbows kinda have uses on pure strength builds now

I just found a MUCH easier way to obtain this. From the Rampart Tower site of grace:
Make the jump to the eastern roof. Walk along the ledge to the left until you see the banished knight and exile. Ignore these two and drop down to the nearby bridge. Cross the bridge and defeat the two exile soldiers. Head right and climb down the ladder Defeat the two nearby exile soldiers. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART! Instead of immediately crossing the bridge, stand on the stack of bricks directly left of the bridge, and jump over the wall. This puts you right behind one of the ballista, SKIPPING THE JUMP and avoiding almost all the ballista spam. After jumping over the wall you can continue as normal.

At least the high base damage of crossbows and the lack of scaling means you have the route of investing in 33 Faith as soon as possible to boost your high base damage with Howl of Shabriri and Golden Vow without regret. And I appreciate that the unchangeable skill on these things is at least Kick so you have a great answer for blocking enemies. Could be worse. I wish one could get two arbalests in one run since dual wielding crossbows has some merit (for getting two shots off quickly in appropriately-sized vulnerability windows). But Heavy Crossbow’s damage is close enough to work well enough for offhand (and I might even dual wield heavy crossbows just for the aesthetics), and I can probably get someone to mule/trade me an Arbalest if I reaaaally want two.

What joker put this “NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.” notice on every bow and crossbow page, even though these weapons weren’t changed in 1.09 AND crossbows literally don’t have scaling in the first place?

Before making the jump across the gap to get this weapon, I would highly recommend baiting out a shot from the left ballistae. That particular one seems to have years of sniping experience and will hit you midair or just after making the jump (before you can roll), knocking you back down to make you try the jump again. The one on the right has a worse angle on you and cannot shoot you until after you make the jump.

Miyazaki personally adding the Light Crossbow, Heavy Crossbow, and Arbalest in every game knowing damn well everyone will only use the Arbalest.

i started using this in the off hand and now every weapon i try out it has the arbalest on the offhand as a finisher or to punish mages that run away

I kinda miss old ds3 meta, when using crossbows actually took skill to aim with exploding bolts instead of just dumping sleep bots in true combos.

                            Some more specific directions:

From the Gateside Chamber site of grace head north through the courtyard and pass through the portcullis. Jump up the rocks to the left of the stairs, turn right at the tree, and jump across the gap. Turn right and jump down into the small section of wall with an exile manning a ballista. The arbalest is on a dead body just past him.

so crossbows have less damage falloff and fire in a straighter line for longer than bows but when they start to drop their damage falloff is much faster than bows.

Going through the gargoyle door and jumping down is the most Ass backwards path you can take to get to the Arbalest. Just follow the path from the main gate and as soon as you walk into the courtyard with the exploding ballista turrets, run/jump up the obvious rocky path on your left and hop over the small gap to the ballista above the door you walked in from. The Arbalest is directly behind him.

Alternatively, an easy way up is just jumping onto the rocks in the main entrance, below the rampart with the Arbalest. There's two ballistas and two exiles throwing fire bombs, but they go down in two kukris. Then you make the jump across and onto the rampart with the item.

Using a Stonesword Key to access, additionally obtaining the Godskin prayerbook and Godslayer Seal:
From the Rampart Tower bonfire, take the shortcut lift down to where the Grafted miniboss is fought inside the storeroom (or reach this point manually). Exit into the courtyard with the flamethrowers and barricades. Take an immediate left and hug the wall until you enter a cellar containing rats. You will hit a fog wall that requires one Stonesword Key to open. Continue past this fog wall until you reach an outdoors area again. Pull an immediate right and hug the wall until you reach a ladder. Continue past this point and almost all the way across the bridge, then jump to the rocky outcropping to your right (it's a tight jump). Continue and jump back into a walled-in area with a ballista. The Arbalest is on a corpse in that area.

                                    Saving a Stonesword key:
From the Rampart Tower bonfire, go back into the tower and up the wooden stairs, and exit outside there. Get onto the wooden platform the hornblowing exile stands on and use that to jump onto the wall, then onto the roof of the wooden part of the building in front of you. Follow that down onto the rooftop with the broken pillar, and climb the pillar onto the outcropping. When you reach a spot where you can jump up on the left and get the Claw Talisman, drop down onto the walkway below, and then drop down again. Run across the wooden bridge and then down the ladder on your right. Continue until you've just stepped onto another wooden bridge and then jump (it's a pretty tight jump) onto the outcropping on your left. Continue and jump back into a walled-in area with a ballista. The Arbalest is on a corpse in that area.

Feel free to add these to the article. I just CBA creating an account.

Getting this is a bit tricky to describe, but basically if you go down into the cellar area with the rats in stormveil castle, exit and go to the right to climb a ladder, progress forward to climb another ladder, run past two storm nights in the open area after this and pass over a small wooden bridge while running from them. After you get off the bridge, immediately take a sharp right and jump over the wall into a grassy area. From here, you can jump onto another walled area with a siege ballista on it. Keep running past there and you'll find the Arbalest on a corpse.

                                      • Anonymous

The Arbalest is found past the stonesword key fogwall found in a basement to the side of the large central plaza in stormveil castle, with all the flamethrowers. You need to jump off of the wooden bridge onto where the ballistas are. It is then found on a corpse next to the second balista.
