Butchering Knife is a Greataxe in Elden Ring. The Butchering Knife scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for characters with high Dexterity builds. Its skill allow users to increase their attack power and execute strong combo attacks.

Signature weapon of the Ogress Anastasia, known to have eaten
countless Tarnished while disguised as a Finger Maiden.

Restores a very small amount of HP when it squarely strikes an enemy.

 

Where to Find Butchering Knife in Elden Ring

The Butchering Knife weapon can be found at the following location:

  • Dropped by Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater. [Elden Ring Map here]
    • This weapon comes pre-infused with the Sacred enhancement by default, although it has no custom Ash of War on it. If playing with beginning patches, Anastasia drops a "Standard" Butchering Knife with no Ash of War.
    • Since it has Sacred affinity but no Ash of War, it seems to be a bug by the programmers but you can revert it to its base Standard affinity by infusing it with any Ash of War and then removing it.

 

Elden Ring Butchering Knife Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Barbaric Roar
  • This weapon can be infused with Ashes of War
  • Butchering Knife can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones
  • Hitting an enemy restores 1% HP per hit, regardless of speed of the attack. As such certain arts, such as Wild Strikes, or backstabbing, which hits twice, are more effective than usual.
    • Confirmed to work the Golden Land ash of war, with each beam healing the user per hit.
  • Has the lowest Strength requirement of all Greataxe class weapons. This allows one to utilize some two-handed weapons Ashes of War such as Golden Land, Prelate's Charge and Waves of Darkness with bare minimum Strength investment.

        So here is the thing for anyone that doesn't cook, a "butchering knife" is not used like any other knives in the kitchen, it's meant to chop rough cuts off of whole limbs and is used in very much the same way a hatchet is used to split firewood, so yes, basically the chef axe! I see no problem with this...

          feels basically the same as the omen cleaver but slightly worse. it has the same R2 but the motion value is slightly lower uncharged. also the damagelevel is 2 instead of 3 (less stagger to pve enemies). slightly lower AR and less range. but it does weigh less and it does standard damage instead of slash.

                          Is really great weapon for a dex int build prisoner starting class. Infused with cold it has a B scaling in dex and also some int scaling. Frost build up procs at some enemies really fast. Use fire pots to reset the frost at bosses.

                              They definitely butchered (no pun intended) this weapon by changing it from an axe to a greataxe and getting rid of its unique 1 handed r2. It’s always been a subpar weapon in terms of damage but made up for that fact by having a unique moveset and healing abilities. Keeping the 2 handed R2, which was trash in all the games except this one, but getting rid of the 1 handed R2 which was the best part of the weapon makes no sense. And now that it functions like a greataxe with the R1’s it loses its speed to poise damage advantage, and its range advantage relative to its class because it’s no longer an axe. They made the Iron Cleaver, which is essentially a different version of the one handed Butcher Knife, but then they shafted the real Butcher Knife.

                              They could’ve easily given it the Iron Cleaver one handed R2 and kept the spirit of this thing intact.

                                    I was WONDERING why the hell this thing was called the "Sacred Butchering Knife" and had FAI scaling when I got it. Seemed to be rather weird theming, like the whole "carving people up and eating them" thing was some kind of holy ritual. Guess it's just a design quirk after all.

                                          Loved it in Dark Souls 3, Love it here too. The only thing that I gotta question about it's features is it's weight. How this piece of metal weighs less than a flamberge makes no sense and I do wonder if it was supposed to be a normal axe at some point as it was in Dark Souls 3.

                                          Anyways happy for it to be in the game. Keep having it, it's a great and fun weapon to use : )

                                            Duel weild poison is surprisingly legit. You get phantom poison build-up and 2% phantom hit healing. Poison mist ash of war heals 1% per tick they stand in the cloud even if not poisoned.

                                                This weapon is definitely the better option for PvP if you're going to be picking from the two HP regen per hit weapons. Great stars has about 30 more AR with the same stat investment (accounting for weight and stat requirements) but also less range, worse moveset and most importantly a poorer ash of war selection. If you plan on only using a single HP regen weapon and not powerstancing for PvP then this is the more optimal choice.

                                                      The Godskin Swaddling Cloth is pretty damn good with this weapon, especially if you're using a weapon art that does many consecutive ticks of damage, the health regen with Prelate's Charge is pretty amazing.

                                                          This with Prelate's Charge + Bloodflame Blade with a keen infusion on a dex build seems pretty nutty so far, especially if you add the Godskin Swaddling Cloth and Winged Talismans into the mix, it's so fun just turning into a nigh undeniable paintrain. (Lord Of Blood's Exultation also seems pretty great with it)

                                                            This is probably one of my favorite weapons. I like to use Bloodflame Blade along with Fire, Grant Me Strength then roll up and activate Waves of Darkness with this bad boy and gain life while I'm doing thousands of AoE damage. Melts bosses like butter.

                                                                Requirements are 16 strength and 20 dexterity. This allows you to use Pulley Crossbow, a weapon that is not far from where you get Butchering Knife which uses Somber Stones instead of Smithing Stones. This allows you to shoot different type of bolts in quick succession since it's a burst crossbow that shoots 3 bolts at a time and can help against stronger enemies by poisoning/rotting them.

                                                                On top of that, if you keep investing into dexterity you can use Hand of Malenia.

                                                                  This is easily my favorite weapon in the game. It may not be the strongest, but it's definitely one of the coolest imo. I feel like such a badass using it, and I like that you can fully replicate the original moveset using Wild Strikes. When I first saw Anastasia using this, I was scouring the whole game looking for it. I used it all the way to the end of the game. It was the first weapon I ever got to max level too. I hope they bring it back in the next game.

                                                                    this and the magma wyrms scalesword have the same r2 despite being different weapon types, this being a great axe and the scalesword being a curved greatsword.

                                                                      Since the HP regen is a percentage of your max HP, you can increase the amount healed by raising your max HP.

                                                                      If you take this to +25, get a big enough life bar, and bring your mimic, you can turn the tables on Melania to life-drain her.

                                                                            I did a small test with Butchering knife (https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Butchering+Knife) + Great Stars (https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Great+Stars). Here are the results:
                                                                            (max hp: 1482 hp)
                                                                            stars: restore 14 hp upon hit
                                                                            stars w/ butch: restore 14 hp upon hit (they don't stack, tried with both equipped as main hand)
                                                                            2 stars: restore 28 hp upon hit
                                                                            2 butch: restore 28 hp upon hit

                                                                              Pair with the Deathbird Poker or the Forked Hatchet, and you can be the Butcher from DS1*, which seems pretty cool to me now that we can mix and match voices and bodies.

                                                                                Interesting.. this weapon has a different 2 handed heavy attack moveset when the stock ash of war is used (barbaric roar). Ends in a jumping attack. Pretty cool. I tried other buff aow on it and none of them trigger this unique Moveset.

                                                                                    I still used it on my STR build because it's my baby lmao. Still kicked ass too, but I'm under no illusion that it's meant for DEX. But hell, if you want to make it STR, do it. Use what you like and have fun.
