Whenever I try to make a specialist mage character in ER, I always run into the same problem: Everything needed for the build is guarded or dropped by something highly resistant to the same type of damage as the thing it's guarding / holding. Essentially, if you want to make a mage, you have to start by making something completely different to get around the defenses of the enemies you need to beat in order to build the toon, and then use a larval tear to respec into the build you actually wanted, which somewhat defeats the whole point of seeing if you can run the game with a certain build IMO.

Fire and Gravity sorceries are the only exceptions I've so far found, and the latter only works because of Rock Sling doing physical damage and being available without needing to fight anything for it. Conversely, every single one of the spells above (and even most of the Frenzyflame and Fire Giant incantations too) are either bought or found as field pick-ups - one or two have enemies in the way, but those enemies are either easily lured away with stealth baiting tactics or are not that resistant to fire themselves. This makes pyromancers one of the very few themed mage builds you can do from the start and stick to throughout the whole game without feeling like you're banging your head against a wall of bad game design choices.

The fact that there's only one area where a significant number of highly-fire-resistant enemies live (and it's completely optional) is a nice bonus.

in other words, this type of incantations are mostly supportive and low level fire dmg options… since they all sucks mid-late game and completely overshadowed by giantflame spells

Change the icon for the Fire Monks incantations, thats literally the Giant's Seal which is for Fire Giant's Incantations

for "fire monks", they never thought making a fireball faster or use a bit of thinking to have more original uses of fire… it’s only fireball, fire stream, fire explosion……… the cinematic experience and variety is clearly lacking compared to all other elements

the colour scheme and fire effects for the fire monk / fire giant spells they chose is way better than the fire spells in the previous games. awesome fromsoftware game design.

Seems ever since Fire Magic was broken in the original Dark Souls, From Software has been perpetually traumatized into never allowing fire to ever become the powerhouse it was during the early days of that game on PS3. Much like Lightning Spear has never returned to its glory days of Dark Souls 2's early chapters. From's approach to balance these days is burn me once, and to hell you go. No small increments, no adjustments, no lessons learned. They simply excommunicate an ability school and attempt to never think of it again.

                • I still don't get why flame sling doesn't get the buff from giant's seal. The fire spells in general need more love from the devs. They are slow as hell and barely useful in pvp. Sure, the best pvp players still can make good use of them but overall they are risky to use. Radagons icon doesn't help much either. And if that wasn't enough, the game is full of water surfaces and rain = less fire damage on target. Thais makes fire one of the trickiest elements to use in pvp because you are almost all of the the time doing less damage than normal.

Image we had something like a fire whip. We could do aoe like the bosses do. That would be dope, but no, devs would never allow that. All they want is to make the player get one-two shot f*cked in the ass by every regular trash mob because its what they call "hard".

                    • Wrote a Fire Monk chant. You recite it by casting it:

Catch Flame O, Flame! Flame, Grant Me Strength,
Catch Flame O, Flame! Flame, Protect Me,
Catch Flame Whirl, O Flame! Fire's Deadly Sin,
Catch Flame Surge, O Flame! Flame Cleans Me.

I kinda miss Floating Chaos and Black Serpent from DS3. They may not be great, but they were pretty unique

If we're going to be nitpicky, Snap Flame and Flame sling are not Firemonk incantations. They derive from the Tarnished prophets who foresaw the burning of the Erdtree. Weird, however, is that the flame witnessed by the prophet's in their visions is called "the flame of ruin" (Source: Flame Sling), which IS the Giant's Flame (Source: Surge, O Flame!). Nonetheless they derive from different sources, evidenced by the different parchment behind the spell icons. Also, as others have said, the Fire Monk and Fire Giant spells should probably be consolidated into one category, they share the same Parchment, as well as both mutually being boosted by the Giant's Seal.

I find it odd that theres no Regular Flame Weapon Imbuement Incant that has a long duration. Bloodflame and Blackflame are 2 different types that scale differently and has different durations, theres no middle ground of a regular Flame Weapon Imbuement that lasts as long as Electrify Armament and Order Blade with the same Incant Scaling.

Fire Monk and Fire Giant incantation are the same category. Fire Monk incantations do not include catch flame, flame sling and fire's deadly sin

Hmmmmm, the weapons for fire monk really have high dex scaling suggesting the monks might have high dexterity, maybe the fire giant/monk incants really need high cast speed therefore high dex to cast effectively, but damn it is a expansive stat investment with minimum return.

Fire's Deadly Sin, Catch Flame, and Flame Sling are not "Fire Monk Incantations". This is done intentionally, these spells relate to the burning of the Erdtree (or the cardinal sin) as seen by prophets. This is seen as blasphemy and the church subsequently shuns prophets who see it. This is why the prophet starts with catch flame and their equipment bears punishments from the church. The Giant's Flame is ultimately the only flame that could burn the Erdtree so the incantations are linked in that way but the category of incantations is based on how they were produced

"does not apply to catch flame"

Why? Melee users can swing 1300 hp at my level and magic users can spam 800 damage but I can't hit 400?

At the time of writing this page says:
"Despite belonging to different "schools", Fire Monk Incantations are buffed by the Giant's Seal (+20%), though this buff does not apply to Flame Sling or Catch Flame."
However, the Giant's Seal page says:
"Despite also being flame-based, Catch Flame, Fire's Deadly Sin, Flame Sling, Flame, Cleanse Me, and Flame, Grant Me Strength do NOT seem to be boosted by this seal."

These contradict, so which is it?

                                      • Anonymous

After extensive testing, I can say for certain that the Giant's Seal DOES buff O, Flame! Surge, O Flame! and Whirl, O Flame! but NOT Catch Flame or Flame Sling

So basically, there is no seperate Fire Monk spell school. A spell's school can be seen by the symbol that appears (or doesn't appear) when you cast the spell. The Fire Giant spells all have the same "circle in circle" symbol before they cast, but the two "starter spells" (catch flame and flame sling) have no such symbol.

Would be nice if these were buffed by the Giant's Seal; since the Fire Giant's inspired the Fire Monks to cast these.
