Whips are a type of Weapon in Elden RingWhips usually inflicts little to moderate damage, and perform poorly against heavily armored Enemies, but have long reach.

Whips cannot be parried and cannot be used to perform critical attacks.

Whips can be modified by a number of Ashes of War to change their Skills or Damage Type, so play around with them and see what you like as you acquire more.

Compatible Ashes of War include Ground Slam, Golden Slam, Raptor of the Mists, Beast’s Roar, Determination, Royal Knight’s Resolve, Endure, Kick, Quickstep, Bloodhound Step, Flame of the Redmanes, Hoarfrost Stomp, Storm Stomp, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Ram and Hoarah Loux’s Earthshaker.
(Needs more testing to determine more compatible Ashes)

Weird bug. If you're powerstancing whips on Torrent and then dismount while moving, any jumping L1 attacks you make will not use the left whip until either you do something that doesn't involve jumping (i.e. walking) or do nothing for a couple of seconds. The left whip just stays curled up when you try.

      • Anonymous

You can get Hoslow's whip from Diallos right at the start of the game, then keep heading north for Urumi. This gives you a Strike and a Slash weapon right after you get Torrent. Don't waste your time going for the regular Whip. I'm enjoying having a little faith for weapon incants like Bloodflame Blade on Hoslow's, and Flame Grant Me Strength. You can make up for the lack of backstabs with charged R2s and Determination/RKR, which work at a distance and from any direction. I've been using Determination/RKR since the start, it is great for getting a massive initial hit. I'm trying to use a dual weapon build, but often a single weapon has advantages like less stamina use and serpent god blade or executioner axe offhand, which is good for stealth action. Stamina use on dual whips is so high, you need to go in, then back off and recover, where single whip you rarely run out of stamina. And early game you generally have one very strong weapon due to scarcity of smithing stones.

Currently in Leyndell with Keen Hoslow's and Blood Urumi, sometimes swap out to Magma Whip for Erdtree Guardians, and I am enjoying the build. Early I went no armor with Blue Dancer Charm quite successfully, leveling up Vigor mostly, but I'm starting to armor up for Leyndell and beyond, and building up some Dex and Endurance.

Don't let the lack of ash of war options scare you away from whips. Raptor of the mist is all you need.

It's amazing on whips, the raptor mist crouch counts the same a duck ingame. You'll either go right under enemy attacks or get the procc to dodge incoming attacks and set up for the whip's surprisingly good light jump attack.

The Raptor Mist crouch also sets up for the whip's long jab out of roll or crouch, which turns raptor mist into a offensive set up too. This gets even nuttier when you dual wield whips. Absolute must have for whips to shine.

          • Anonymous

How the hell do you counter these? Genuine question. Long range, fast, short recovery, weirdly high poise damage, I'm physically sweating whenever I have to fight them

            • Anonymous

here's why these are so annoying: 2handed they do 140 poise damage on an R1, and that means they can break everything without hyperarmor, and you can R1 anyone before they get to activate their hyperarmor. maybe UGS or shield halberd for consistent punishing.

              • Anonymous

5/6 of these do strike, but I feel these weapons should have a sweetspot mechanic, where hitting something with the very end of the whip would do more damage and slashing type damage. It'd be more realistic, most of a whip's damage irl comes from the cracker which slices **** up. I also just miss sweetspots in general.

                • Anonymous

The from software games already kinda embrace a sadomasochistic ideology, but with the whip you fully enter the BDSM vibes.

Good choice for a weapon dear tarnished, master Hewg is proud of making for you a weapon able to spank the gods.

                  • Anonymous

I think whips are an underrated weapon class. Strike damage is always nice and they have pretty nice reach and fantastic stance damage. Not being able to crit is obviously bad but I think the main thing holding them back is their extremely limited ash of war selection. Being restricted to white shadow's lore as the only black whetblade aow is pretty tragic. There's some good ashes of war in there but not a lot of flexibility. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that both unique whips have excellent skills and whips are great for power stancing. Unfortunately both unique whips are faith/fire damage whips. I hope in DLCs we get a few more unique whips or ashes of war that can be put on them to allow greater versatility because I adore their moveset but sadly there isn't a ton of different ways they can be put to use.

                    • Anonymous

Ok so I whipped the gods asses one by one the whole run. I can say whips fall off against the final few fights, but for the rest of the game man...I was dominating. A bat screaming? Whip em. Rats bullshitting? Whip em. Humanoid npc's get clapped. 9.5/10 fun weapons, will whip some lands between the booty again.

                      • Anonymous

Just wanted to mention these whips have an excellent R2 for hitting invisible moving scarabs. You can get one early in Castle Morne too.

                        • Unlike many larger weapons who counter aggressive playstyle in pvp, this counters passive and reactive players, those who try to space and wait for you to attack. Unspaceable, unparriable, super fast. Put on some status, and you will become the passive player's nightmare

                          • Anonymous

These rule! Somehow I was able to do a few PVP matches a couple days ago despite not having PS Plus and every time I brought my whip I did really well. The instastagger is awesome and the reach paired with bloodhound step is amazing. Awesome PVP weapon. — The Fist of Fury

My only complaint about these are there is no infusable strength whip.

Otherwise it's a solid weapon class compared to past games.

                              • Anonymous

So strange that it does strike damage. A whip would be pretty much the worst weapon to use against anything with armor or hard scales, but in this game it's a very viable option.

                                • Anonymous

Shockingly competent. In addition to having the de-facto long reach in the game, the AR is generally quite serviceable, with the Urumi being able to match or surpass most katanas at 80 Dex with Keen Infusion. Losing the ability to critical stings, but if you like mounted combat that's a total non-issue.

                                  • Anonymous

Apparently R1 turns into a win button in PvP if your opponent is using a colossal sword. The poise damage on these things is ridiculous considering they're just damn whips

                                    • Anonymous

Because of their wild and free hitbox there very useful for things that fly close to the ground like bats and misbegotten archers

                                      • Anonymous

Why can't whips run an ash like glintblade phalanx? It's not like you're using it for anything other than a faux sorcery stick.

                                        • Anonymous

Current playstyle is "shield and whip with backup Misericorde" and it freakin ROCKS. Whip guard counters are underrated (still not great, but underrated)

i just got outranged by spinning slash on the ripple crescent halberd. This is the true elden ring experience.

I would do unspeakable things to have a coded whip with the Urumi’s heavy attack as its version of the unblockable blade on the other two coded weapons

Whips do just about no poise-damage. I just fought the mimic tear with a whip, and we were just constantly trading since we couldn't stagger each other. I had 59 poise. I think whips should do a little more, but then they might be a bit too annoying in PvP.

Strangely enough, noone is talking about how slow dual wield jumping L1 is.
Sure, maybe it's busted in PVP so it has to be 30% longer than something like dual Great Stars, but for the PVE-homies this strikes hard. After trying out other things first and switching to dual whips out of interest, the delay between jumping L1 hit and you being able to do anything is excruciating against bosses that do not stagger well (like Godfrey). Adding to that the low base damage and quite moderate poise damage + no riposte + the absence of good AoWs, whips feel rather situational. They're amazing (to the point of 'it feels like cheating') against small and anthropomorphic enemies that get staggered with every hit, and against flying targets, but that's about it, against other things you will suffer a lot (especially in NG+n).

Maybe, just as the damage numbers are tweaked in PVP vs PVE, the recovery time (or whatever affects the required amount of frames to finish an attack and start doing other actions) could be reduced for PVE, because right now things don't feel fair, when duo great hammers are faster than duo whips.

I got dual hoslow whips on an arcane dex build so I was wondering what I should do with them for pve. I’m not sure if I should use raptor of the mists or bloodhound step on my main one and also if keeping a misericorde as a backup is worth it. Also, should I use occult for the increased damage or bleed for the increased bleed or something else entirely

Bro these things get such a bad rep from petal whip bloodhound step spamming bleed builds that I try to use a two handed sacred infused whip with kick on it and mfs will still point down like they eliminated a toxic threat.

I've been in love with the urumi ever since I first got my hands on it. I used it so much in pvp that now I use it in pve too lol. I really hope the dlc adds some kind of whip specific ash of war though, the only whip unique one is stuck on the giant's red braids which is kinda lame cause you'll only get decent use out of it with a quality/faith build even though whips work best with dex.

also if you're struggling with malenia I strongly recommend trying out the urumi or any other whip really. the long range means you can just hit her before she even gets close and abuse her low poise. the damage may be lower than what you're used to, but it's better than missing and doing nothing. royal knight's resolve is disgusting on whips though, it's the best of all worlds with good range, speed and damage

cant wait for Great Whips that will consist of massive chains, massive thorned chains, massive fire chains, etc. it will be frickin' amazing

Ok but why did they not reuse the DS3 whip skill? It wasn't just a different move either, it reduced stamina regen...

Anyone notice you can’t use frost mist with whips even those it says you can in the description of the ash of war?

                                                                • Anonymous

Hiding behind a shield and poking with a spear is obviously a thing but the giant's braid whip in off hand and a cold spear with the ice spear AoW on it in the right is a lot of fun. A whip is blocking absolutely f**k all but it is very good at keeping enemies at bay and if they can't get close enough to hit you in the first place it doesn't matter.

                                                                  • Anonymous

For anyone who only has one or only uses one, strongly recommend two handing these. The attacks are much faster and, though small, there is a decent boost in damage from the strength increase.

                                                                    • I can only assume those who believe that whips are weak, haven't tried playing through any of the previous games with a whip. No, the damage isn't as high as other weapons. But the reach and utility offered, as well as how potent fire/bleed can be, whips are stronger then they've ever been.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Now they all deal strike damage (besides Urumi).
They've gone from being useless against armored foes, to being super effective.

Urumi was a lot of fun in my first playthrough, stat wise it dealt high charge attack damage, while remaining a masterpiece in PvP. A few warnings though:

                                                                            - Because of its slow speed and slash damage, dragons like Borealis and Ezykes were extremely painful for me (but they were painful because of AoE “Get the hell away from me” attacks. I suggest having a backup weapon available, such as another whip, status ailments, or weapon buffs on it. I wasn’t using any magic or buffs on this character, just pure keen.
                                                                            - With low poise break in PvE (if you are using a single whip, though Urumi does better), you either want to spec into doing damage without critical hits. Axe Talisman, possibly twinblade talisman due to the hit chain on charged attacks, wing sword insignias, and spear talisman for counterattacks with the charged attack.

That should be it for suggestions. If there’s anything I missed then let me know. This weapon is a hell of a lot of fun, and I recommend anyone who likes whips and uses pure dex to wield it.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Urumi is literally the whip class, perfected. It has range, it has even more range with the unique charged R2s, the R2s charge fast, the two-handed R2 is switched so the last R2 attack, which is the best one, is the first R2 attack. The only reason you would use any of the other whips is for bleed. Why do you always do this, FromSoft? You make a class of weapons and then you make one weapon within that class nearly if not completely outclass all the others within that class. Strange decisions, man.

                                                                              • Anonymous

It's surprising that all Whips deal Strike damage except for the Urumi, which deals Slash. But it's kinda nice to use these against rock enemies and Crystallians bc they have decent range. Never really used Whips before, but seeing that they deal Strike damage has changed my mind.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Play how you like but powerstance is not how to use these effectively. They should be used as an offhand weapon to your main hand. Use exactly how people use crossbows but faster and way better tracking if shorter ranged. They can also roll catch in pvp and complement your main weapon if it is short(curved swords/hammers.) In pvp, they cannot be parried so spam your offhand whip when dealing with parry gods. And you should be picking a whip that matches the status effects of your main weapon to build up status.

Whips are a missed opportunity, their default ash should have been a slash that parries weapons in an aoe exactly like golden parry but without the magic effects.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I'm going to be the odd one out and recommend pairing a main-hand whip with an off-hand dagger. While it's not optimal by any means, it covers the two main weaknesses of whips (vulnerable at close range and no critical attacks) extremely well. You can even put the Parry AoW on the dagger, use whichever affinity you like, and two-hand it when you want to crit (or when you just want high DPS).

I'm having an absolute blast with this combo and I seriously can't recommend it enough.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Man some of the whip attacks are absolutely terrible especially in PvP. R2, jumping R2, backstep R2 and roll/crouch R2 are literally the same move and the R2 is just really bad. Theres barely any use for it. Only roll catches if youre lucky. PS crouch/roll L1 is also garbage. Super slow, active frames are stupid long and the hitboxes and the tracking are weird in a way that makes punishing and roll catching impossible. Backstep PS L1 is also bad. Its basically running PS L1 but the startup frames are doubled. The moveset coul really use a rework. Add to that that most AoW for whips are pretty useless. Not even quickstep is good because if you dodge sideways you will attack with the backstep R1 instead of crouch/roll R1 which is slower.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

He will be there mourning over her and you can kill him there. Simple, early game Hoslow's.

The only issue is you cannot then complete his story arc so you must decide which is more important to you or trade for one instead.

I've made a habit of carrying both a Misericord and either the Urumi or Thorned Whip in my two extra primary slots.

I mean it makes a bit of sense that whips would deal strike damage since they have no cutting edge (minus urumi). But this also means whips are now effective against heavy armor enemies as they typically have low strike resist. And that's just a weird thought.

It’s usually when I do it off the horse and then it will do it for the rest of my jumping L1s until I do an R1 or R2
