Elden Ring Ambush Shard Guide

  • Considered a Night Sorcery.
    • Despite this however, the spells damage is not increased by a Staff of Loss.
  • Stamina Cost: 15
  • This sorcery shoots a projectile from behind an enemy, making it useful for enemies with shields.
  • Due to the nature of Night Sorceries, enemies will not dodge Ambush Shards.
  • It is a viable strategy to use this against shield-bearing enemies, since the sorcery will always try to strike its target from behind.
  • This is one of a handful of unexpected things whose range is increased from wearing the Arrow's Reach Talisman.
  • Note: This Spell was changed with Patch 1.07 as follows:
    • FP consumption has been reducied from 16 to 13.

Great sniping tool with less travel time than that of Swift Glintstone Shard. Arrow's Reach Talisman was made for this.

Seems that Ambush Shard will reach any target within 20 meters of you. Casting Great Oracular Bubble(s) or Rancor makes it all the more interesting.

Great for getting an ambush on the ambusher, some enemies will still have the hit count as hitting the shield more often than not.

          • Anonymous

I use this more than pebble. It does similar damage with way more versatility. Enemies that you can't hit with normal spells because of obstructions or weird angles can be hit with it.

Should get affected by Staff of Loss just as other damaging Night Sorceries are. Even if it is intended and not an oversight, its base damage is not that big to keep this "feature".

How anyone can convince themselves this spell is bad is beyond me. Sure the damage is pitiful, but it's also a literal "I press button to pinch that guy 20 miles over there in the ass". The projectile appears like a milimeter behind them and hits virtually instantly. Either they are already franctically moving or rolling or it simply hits. Closest the game has to a press-to-deal-damage spell.

Incredible spell. So much more useful than just enemies with shields (although that is great). You can also cast it at enemies that are obscured, crouched behind cover, when you don't have a straight shot to them. Also you can use it around corners if you are still target-locked

I used this spell when farming the albinauric bow and blue silver set to stay out of the archers line of fire. Took ages to kill them because of their insane magic resistance, but it was better than them two-shoting my squishy behind.

I tried, I really tried using this, and making this work, but it’s just painful to use in pvp… ugh.. yet again, more pvp useless sorceries

                      • This spell is in dire need of a slight casting speed buff and it needs to be boosted by staff of loss. I bet there are people who are keen to make a night sorcerer build. But the staff only boosts like 2 spells? C'mon...

Would be discusting if it came as a ash of war and functioned like the glint Stone pebble ash and phalanx ash...

Ambush shard ash for stagger and then the lunge stab... Would be sick

underrated utility spell for more than merely dealing with shield enemies. It doesn’t require line of sight and can be used in the safety of cover. Another underrated spell is magic glintblade. You can fully charge 5 before any deliver for a peerless opening on unaware enemies. It can also be used to target enemies that are nearly vertically under you since the blade can angle itself back towards you while your regular spells would overshoot the distance and miss your target. Lastly, the glintblade can be used to set up ambushes in inopportune positions while you move to better angles or just run away to reset the encounter (it’s a silent spell as well). Being a rogue mage is a lot of fun and very practical and flexible in pve.

Does this not bypass Shields in PvE? I swear everything I've fought blocks it while facing towards me! O.o

I was looking forward to having some dynamic casting animations like this one for other sorceries. Makes me sad we've spent the majority of another epic adventure holding up our staff and giving it a little twirl.

Doesn't do whats advertised, blocking enemies can block from behind still because this game is trashy like that

                                  • Anonymous

I highly recommend this spell for pure spell PVE players! It’s especially effective at getting at those hard to reach targets, like enemies that hide directly bellow you or above you for it always targets behind them.

                                    • Anonymous

in theory, a shieldpierce spell is a pretty cool idea. In practice, blocking seems to have an extremely forgiving hitbox such that the slightest angle deviation (like, oh, i don't know, strafing even a little) will cause this spell to be blocked anyways

                                      • Anonymous

Don't sleep on this spell, it is absurdly good especially when you bait them with regular spells so don't expect a spell to come from behind them.

This is really funny to use in invasions with Arrows Reach talisman and Concealing Veil. Find a good spot to hide and annoy the host. The host will often start randomly hitting the air because they think you are just invisible. This also seems to cause some people to just disconnect since they assume there is a network problem or a hacker

Great for low-level invasions with the Veil talisman and boosting magic damage as much as possible.

Make the build a glass cannon. The only viable low-level base vigor invasion build in the game.

Reminder that the projectile is based on your positioning, not the enemies. If you cast at an enemy while facing their side profile, it'll come out from the opposite side of their profile and not the back. This means that this spell is a little wonky if you're using it on Torrent since you can move while casting so be mindful of that.

The counter of those dragon breath spammer. Just time it right when they use it and those dragon head tarnished will fall to the ground.

Great spell in theory. Too bad the blocking angles are ****y and still block, even if the spell is behind them.

                                                  • Guys, I don't know what you all ar talking about shielded enemies, but I tried it against two different shielded enemies and even if the projectile hit their back while they were shielding, the damage they received was halved than hitting them when they weren't using the shield and the animation was like if they were being attacked on the shield. I will still test in different areas, but for now, it may be bugged against some enemies (?)

                                                    • Anonymous

It's good for enemy invaders/npcs cause they're stupid and won't evade it. It's fun using it against Miriam so long as you're locked to her.

                                                      • Anonymous

This spell is great to have if you need to use it against shielded enemies, weakness is their back, sniping from being behind a wall, enemies that dodge your range attacks, and can stop spell casters. Not a spell for every situation but pretty high on the useful scale.

                                                        • Really handy spell except for the roughly 20-30% of the time it just... doesn't work for whatever reason and hits an enemy's shield, presumably after passing harmlessly through their torso.

                                                          • Anonymous

Hilariously broken on horseback, you just run away from enemies and cast this with zero thought and they get shredded to pieces.

                                                            • Anonymous

Fantastic spell for the Flame Chariot enemies as it hits the enemies driving them for full damage and obviously great any enemies using a shield, too. Also used this to hit enemies that I can't hit with other spells due to walls, floors, balcony railings, etc. You just target lock them and the spell will hit them even if they're not in your line of sight. I love this spell. Just don't use it on an incline and you should have pretty good results. The range is pretty good imo.

Nice thing for hitting targets behind a wall or enemys with a shield. But it hast almost no target lock. It moves straigth in a line and your target "evade" the shot just by walking away.

                                                                • Anonymous

This is good for pressuring casters. The distance it needs to travel is very short, so you can essentially spam this to prevent them from getting casts off.

                                                                  • Anonymous

ive only used this for renalla's 1st phase to snipe the singing children. idk what else you can use this on, its just so innacurate

                                                                    • Anonymous

Amazing spell for any enemy that “blocks” your damage from the front. I’ve found it useful against soldiers with shields (crucible knight im glaring at you), those pumpkin head things, and the slimes with face shields.

                                                                      • Anonymous

I've tried using this in PvP. Can't say I recommend it except as an opener on a stationary target or someone with a big shield turtling on you. It's wildly inaccurate on strafing targets.

                                                                        • I couldn't hit a thing with this spell, most enemies dodge it on accident unless they're standing perfectly still. Rock Sling seems to work better, they always dodge during the windup which causes them to eat three rocks to the face.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Seems to be a great spell for single encounters but due to the incredibly short range chances are you'll get hit by an attack while trying to cast this spell.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Pretty self explanatory from the name of the spell alone. Fires from behind the target, so they don't react to it as if you were casting a spell in front. If you're fighting a boss or mob that likes to strafe your spells and make you waste your FP then this spell is for you.

                                                                              • Anonymous

If the target is moving at all sideways, just give up on using it though. Worst tracking ever.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Are you sick of after 4 games still having to maneuver a shield bearing enemy to get openings to annihilate them with a well placed spell? Do you wish you could just spam a pebble or soul arrow at them like any other mob while keeping your distance?
Then howdy partner do I have the spell for you. Make fights against stormveil knights using the shield utterly trivial: keep your distance and keep casting. Blocking still reduces the damage of the spell sometimed but you can bait them into trying to get closer to you instead way more easily than with a front sorcery seeing as they can't facetank with the shield hitbox and smack you. Quick cast, good damage, useful utility. An easy pick for your 3rd or 4th spell slot.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Ennemies that can dodge the pebble don't dodge that spell tho (Think invader NPCs), which is pretty useful. I can also imagine it might have some uses sometimes in pvp.
