  • As it deals fire damage, Magma Shot can be used to reset an enemy's frost buildup, which can be useful for quickly proccing Frostbite multiple times. Note that multiple Frostbite procs will only result in more damage, and will not stack Frostbite's reduced damage negation.

All it takes is 10 FTH and your pure INT sorcerer has a decent fire spell. Nice for situations where rock sling is impractical.

I like it, but why does magma pool do so little damage? Throwing knives do more. In Dark Souls series chaos pyromancies' lava did ok damage - nothing crazy but at least it was noticeable and here we are in Elden Ring, where every ash of war does 5x normal attack damage, you can bleed everyone with a single running attack and magma does just as much damage as throwing ruin fragments.

Feels underwhelming on early faith/int builds since your incant scaling is so much better than your sorc scaling and faith gets a million fire options, but it's pretty decent. Just switch to something else for large enemies since the lava pool won't trigger if it hits too high up.

At first I thought the damage wasn't very good, because I was comparing this spell with it's incantation equivalents. Then realized it can be chain casted relatively fast, so its probably meant to be used that way. Even the lava pools seem to stack on each other.

Initial damage is comparable to black flame fireball. Magma shot has lava pool and black flame has black flame. It's pretty much an incantation for mages without any real downside but as a result in terms of dps it's worse than other sorceries. I still use it for erdtree avatars and such

The Faith costs on these are miniscule. Starting as wretch you already have enough faith for one, and the others you can pretty much get to with equipment and talismans to not need to level faith.

I like how all the fire sorcery haters (the same pieces of sht who had excuse generators for izalith staff not wielding any sort of fire) come here to whine TOGETHAAAAA.

In my opinion, this spell needs a damage buff and a blast radius buff, because as of now it's not that good and giantflame makes that spell completely obsolete.

Best used unaimed at charging opponents. Aim at the ground just in front of your feet, and they'll run right into it. Pairs very well with Roiling Magma, which is also best cast at or around you on the ground. Because it isn't used much, I've had so many people keep attacking me like they don't know it's about to explode.

This spell leaves behind some pooling lava that inflicts flinching and a small amount of damage. However, I found it more useful for general combat as a direct-hit spell.
Unfortunately, Magma Shot has a natural inclination to want to hit the ground right in front of the foe you aim it at, so for maximum effectiveness you will need to aim it manually.

Excellent counts armored shield soldiers like Haligtree knights. The AI is undecided whether to lower the shield when on top of the lava pool or keep it up. As a result, successive full-charged hits trap them while dealing damage.

At 32 INT / 32 FAI and with a Gelmir Glintstone Staff in each hand a charged Magma Shot deals slightly less damage than an uncharged Giantsflame Take Thee (generally agreed to be one of the best incantations in the game) cast at 50 FAI with a single Giant's Seal, with comparable cast time. On the plus side, this spell is more FP-efficient (costing 16 FP instead of 30 FP). However, there's a lot of negatives. Magma Shot arcs much more heavily than Giantsflame, and although it does have a blast radius it is much smaller, maybe half that of Giantsflame. This limits its range when locked on, and although you can free aim it it's just so much harder to connect with. The poise damage, although good, is nowhere near Giantsflame ragdoll levels. The stat investment required is significantly higher. The spell is really balanced around having a Gelmir Staff in both hands (each one provides 15% bonus damage, which stacks multiplicatively for 33% bonus damage), which meaning having to swap to access your melee weapon and weapon art. Farming the Gelmir staff twice is annoying as hell. does more damage, The Sword of Night and Flame flame sweep WA hits much harder (especially at lower INT / FTH levels), is easier to land, and hits multiple targets. Overall this spell is OK: useable damage at a reasonable rate, but annoying to aim and slightly lacking in "umph". If they fixed the launch trajectory maybe I wouldn't have fallen back to spamming the Sword of Night and Flame WA so much that run...

whats the best way to use this at lower level? is gelmir staff optimal or would a pure int staff be better?

                                • Anonymous

This spell is nothing short of incredible if you are decent at free aiming. The fp cost to damage ratio is great, it's aoe, doesn't just dissapear mid air like most spells, again, need to free aim. Even if you are a pure int caster, just invest that 10fth, get this, and the elemental resistance boosting incantations for great value.

only real use for this i can see is combining it with a frosbitebuild which uses frozen mist to reapplie the frosbite debuff

Yes it’ll go further if you free-aim it, but too bad it’s not optimal when locked on. Cannon of Haima slings far even when locked on, so it’s not like they don’t know how to implement this…

It is said that the Magma Sorceries deal physical damage, i tested with and without the buff from exalted flesh (+20%) and i saw no difference in damage, so it might be a missinformation

sorcery, but fire? so does not get buffed from magic charm? Only fire charm? Terra Magica work as well? or no.

Really great for constantly falling short of your target since it’s like trying to sling a wad of wet paper towels with one of those plastic launchers people use to play fetch with their dog. Just kinda lobs in a small arc. Pretty disappointing considering all faith fire spells have incredible arc or insane straight line range.

Pair this with the Darkmoon greatsword's frost beam to reset frostbite effect and you have a super "ice and fire" build

                                              • Anonymous

This spell is great for resetting frostbite on targets so that you can proc it again for big damage. So if you need to incorporate fire for your PVE frostbite this is the go to spell.

The tragic thing about these spells is that they don't really make good sorceries or pyromancies. Blue sorceries are reliable dps at a relatively low cost, while pyromancies are usually expensive burst spells that inflict a lot of damage and aoe when you need it. I can tell by the cost and inability to be chain cast that these spells were intended to be like pyromancies, but they just don't deal enough damage in most scenarios to supersede either of those spell archetypes. Not to mention that this spell is bugged on horseback, and roiling magma doesn't stick to enemies like the description seems to suggest. The most unfortunate thing about from's balance philosophy is that both these and the death spells will probably just be left in the dust, unless later dlc add some sort of content to make them more viable like the ringed city did for hexes.

                                                  • Anonymous

It would be nice if the lava dealt more than 8 damage per tick on a 40/40 int/faith in pvp, but alas hybrid sorcery suffers.

                                                    • Anonymous

There seems to be a funny combo of using frostbite for a bit of burst damage on enemies then hitting them with fire damage to cleanse it so they can get the burst damage again. I was wondering whether this and the other lave sorceries could be useful for that as well. Since it's faith requirement isn't too low perhaps this would be the best option of the four sorceries that could do that.

                                                      • Anonymous

A niche spell compared to pebble and the other straightforward homing missiles but it has it's uses. Never hurts to carry a backup spell that doesn't do magic in case you fight something resistant, and the arcing shot makes it situationally useful against pumpkinheads who otherwise are a pain to kill with homing spells that zero in on their armored head.

                                                        • Anonymous

Great for killing anything weak to fire but otherwise it's just outshined by lots of other sorceries. If you are playing an INT/Faith hybrid and boosting fire attack then it might be worth using, otherwise avoid this outside of the niche situations.

                                                          • Anonymous

It should be noted that this spell can be lobbed over a considerable distance if you aim the camera up just like you would a fire pot. The spell can also be panic casted right at your feet if something is right in your face since its an aoe blob. I find using this spell is much more consistent when facing enemies unlocked aiming at where enemies are standing rather than locking on. The only drawback with the long range lobbing though is the projectile will fizzle out if you are try to lob it from a higher point to get more range, but on even ground it will always last long enough to detonate on the ground.
This is speaking purely on its utility not damage/efficiency.
AH also its bugged to cost double if you don't charge it while on horseback :s

I don't think that it should work like that, but if I charge that spell, it fp cost is like a half of normal spell cost. Does anyone else noticed it?

                                                              • Anonymous

This spell isn't really worth using. It's not the worst sorcery but it requires much more fp than Great Shard, is slower to cast and has very limited range and in return it only deals roughly the same amount of damage. Theoretically it might have some use when encountering magic resistant enemies since an astrologer can use it with a faith boosting item without investing in faith but the fp cost remains pretty steep for what it does.

                                                                • Anonymous

Good alternative to Rock Sling in cramped / short ranged scenarios, as a non-magic option for magic resistant enemies. Unfortunately not much stagger.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Tested with 80 Int and 10 Faith on +10 Carian Royal Scepter.

Like Rock Sling, this spell is useful against enemies which resist magic damage. When distances are too short / cramped for Rock Sling, Magma Shot will be more ideal. The projectile has a small AOE so you’re likely to deal full damage to two targets if they’re right next to each other.

Unlike Rock Sling, Magma Shot doesn’t seem to have much stagger - I wasn’t able to knock down trolls with it.

The damage in comparison to Rock Sling ranges from comparable to superior, depending on the enemy. For relatively stationary targets like plants and land squid, the damage is vastly superior to Rock Sling: 1800 to 2500 vs 1000 dmg. The damage varies depending on how many magma pools spawn, and how many pools the enemy is touching.

However this doesn’t necessarily mean that Magma Shot has many use cases outside of magically resistant zombies and possibly claymen (haven’t reached that far yet on NG+). Most relatively stationary targets are also large, and it is far more efficient to use Adula’s Moonblade vs. large enemies. E.g. the land squids I tested on took 4000+ damage from a well placed Adula’s Moonblade.

                                                                    • Anonymous
