The Crucible

 From the definition of "crucible":

1) a vessel of a very refractory material (such as porcelain) used for melting and calcining a substance that requires a high degree of heat

2) a severe test

3) a place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change or development

Source: merriam-webster /dictionary/crucible

A crucible then, in essence, is a vessel into which material is placed, heated, melted, then poured out to create new forms.

In this sense, Evolution could be considered like a crucible.

• External factors put pressure on species to adapt to the new environment.

• Over time new species arise to deal with those new conditions.

• Life forms being the "material,"

• and the changes in environment are the "heat."

• With new species... variations... life has more pathways to deal with the environment.

Diversity is what allows life to thrive.

The One Great can be considered a "Big Bang" for the universe of the Lands Between.

A moment at the very beginning
that is so intensely hot,

that the environment rapidly changes
at imperceptible speed.

Life simply cannot adapt quickly enough
to this rapidly changing environment,

so it, essentially, stays in "molten" form.

A life form might emerge,
like a bit of slag jumping from the vessel,
but is quickly added back to The Crucible.

This process of:
material added... heated... melted... poured...
tested... then re-added back.

Performed on a single continent...
which is only one of multiple continents...
on a single planet...
of nearly infinite planets...
in a single universe.

This process had to start at some point in time.

A moment when enough energy was released to start a universe.

E = mc2

The Crucible has been turning since the beginning.

This is a manifestation of the Erdtree's primal vital energies -
an aspect of the primordial crucible,
where all life was once blended together.

Siluria's Tree,
weapon of one of the two honored as foremost among the Crucible Knights.

The primordial form of the Erdtree is close in nature to life itself,
and this spear,
modeled on its crucible,
is imbued with ancient holy essence.

Note: English & 日本語

The second line of the 2nd paragraph is quite confusing:

その (sono) can mean: "that" or "the"

Even with the prior sentence mentioning the 黄金樹 [おうごんき」(ougonki), "The Golden Tree," as the subject;
I can take that same sentence as a stand alone.

Just その坩堝たる様 means: "The crucible that is the crucible"

But because the Golden Tree is close to life, that means it's close to The Crucible.

Which leads to confusion, as the official statement of: "its crucible," makes it seem the Golden Tree has its own separate crucible.

Crucible Feather Talisman

"Improves the effectiveness of dodge rolls,
but increases damage taken at all times."

A talisman fashioned from feathers
that embody the aspects of various creatures.

Said to have grown
on the human body long ago.

Improves the effectiveness of dodge rolls,
but increases damage taken at all times.

A vestige of the crucible of primordial life.
Born partially of devolution,
it was considered a signifier
of the divine in ancient times,

but is now increasingly
disdained as an impurity
as civilization has advanced.

In ancient times, it is said this grew on the body of a person
A talisman of various mixed feathers

Rolling avoidance is stronger, but
constantly, damage taken becomes greater

This, is a remembrance of the Crucible of life's beginning
a partial reversal of evolution,
in olden times, this was regarded as sacred, but

in the aftermath of civilization, it is dealt with as if unclean

Note: English & 日本語

In the Official English, "vestige" comes from the characters:

名残
「なごり」
(nagori)

Which does mean "vestige," but it also means "the sadness when parting ways."

名 = "name"

残 = "remnants, vestige"

so if the remnants were so important that their name is remembered,

they're looked upon fondly.

More akin to a memento, or remembrance.

The character used for: "unclean" or "impurity,"

穢れ
「けがれ」
(kegare)

by and large, means just that: "unclean."

However, it has further connotation in what is considered unclean:

"contact with: death, pregnancy, menstruation, etc."

Interesting, that as civilization took root,

the very process that allowed its existence in the first place...

pregnancy... is now seen as unclean.

Seeing as the Golden Order is the current dominant form of civilization...

Sound familiar?

"We got ours, now we're pulling up the ladder behind us."

Such a stark contrast to:

"Blessed are old people who plant trees
knowing that they shall never sit in the shade of their foliage."

Note: English & 日本語

The character used for "Rare" is:

「まれ」
(mare)

Which is the same character used to describe the Numen...

稀人
「まれびと」

"A joy-bringing traveler from the Spirit Realm"

This horn is a symbol of good luck.

Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell.
Use to summon the spirit of a winged misbegotten.

A spirit with the aspect of wings
which takes flight to loose arrows from its bow.
The misbegotten are held to be a punishment
for making contact with the Crucible,
and from birth they are treated as slaves, or worse.

Use to summon a Winged Hybrid spirit body

Carries various wings, a spirit body that while it flies, fires a bow
A Hybrid, said to be an existence of punishment for touching The Crucible
A slave from birth, an unclean person.

Note: English & 日本語

• First, and foremost, they are not "Misbegotten,"

混種
「こんしゅ」
(konshu)

= "mix"

= "seed"

They're Hybrids.

• The character combination for "ashes":

遺灰
「いはい」
(ihai)

遺 = "bequeathed items of the deceased"

灰 = "ash"

does indeed mean "ashes,"
but more specifically they're cremation ashes.

Remember, that burning of the dead
is considered taboo in the Golden Order
.

• "punishment"

「ばつ」
(batsu)

or

「ばち」
(bachi)

The former, "batsu," means "punishment",

but "bachi" means "divine punishment."

The official English version calls them "Misbegotten,"

which is completely different to 日本語 calling them "Hybrid."

This small difference in the term "punishment" reinforces the ideology

that anything not of the Golden Order is to be considered vile.

Even when those entities come into contact with The Crucible;

which even the Gold Tree arose from... supposedly.

• The previous point is reinforced further by the final line,

referring to the Hybrid-folk as "unclean"

穢れ者
「けがれもの」
(kegaremono)

Recall from the Crucible Talisman,

that this term specifically defines "uncleanliness" along the lines of:

"death, pregnancy, menstruation, etc."

Carried by knights loyal to Godrick.

The red tinge in the gold coat mirrors

The color of homeward yearning.

A greatshield painted with a gold coating
A weapon of knights that served Godrick

This (gold) coating、emulates the Golden Tree's beginning
by having traces of red。That is the color of homesickness.

 Note: English & 日本語

• There is no mention of "matter," only "beginning."

原初

「げんしょ」
(gensho)

Every time the official English states "primordial,"
it's referring to this character combination.

Which only means: "beginning, origin, source, starting point"

"Primordial" has more prehistoric connotations.
As if the Golden Tree has been present,
in this form,
since the One Great.

• The color combination used here is bits of red on a gold background.

Contrast this to Beast's Blood, that has the reverse:

Gold bits on a red background.

 The Crucible: Evidence

the first Elden Lord.
The great tree ornamentation is the knight Siluria's mark,
displayed also by her men.

Holds the power of the crucible of life, the primordial form of the Erdtree.
Strengthens Aspects of the Crucible incantations.

The Great Tree ornamentation, is a symbol of knight Siluria and
their subordinates

The origin of the Gold Tree、holds the power of the Crucible of Life
Strengthens the Crucible's various incantations

Note: English & 日本語

• This provides an excellent example of the differences for

"primordial" and "origin"

最初
「さいしょ」
(saisho)

= "the most"

= "beginning"

This character combination, by itself,
is closer in meaning to "primordial," the prehistoric beginning;
or "the very beginning."
Hence, why it's used to describe the very first Lord, Godfrey.
Compare this to:

原初
げんしょ
(gensho)

Which means the "beginning" of something;
that could have occurred at any point in time.
It could have been at "the very beginning,"
or any point thereafter.

Hence, why the official English statement of:

"Holds the power of the crucible of life,
the primordial form of the Erdtree
"

doesn't make sense when compared to 日本語.

The English version claims the Erdtree's (the Gold Tree's) primordial form
holds the power of the crucible of life.

i.e. Erdtree's primordial form = crucible

Which isn't the case.

The origin, as in the location where the Gold Tree started,
holds the power of the Crucible of life.

i.e. Erdtree comes from the Crucible

 • "Great Tree"

Synonyms are prevalent within 日本語, but they have varying degrees of meanings when referring to the subject.

Take the word "I" for example,

「わたし」
(watashi)

「あたし」
(watashi)more feminine

「ぼく」
(boku) a bit more formal

「おれ」
(ore) more masculine

「わし」
(washi) used by older men

「われ」
(ware) "mine self"

Get the picture yet?

Each version means "I", and therefore can be considered a synonym.
However, they all have slightly different connotations;
in essence, they can be made far more specific.

With the Crucible Tree Helm, the ornamentation is specifically called:

大樹
「だいき」
(daiki)

then later, the Golden Tree is specifically stated:

黄金樹
「おうごんき」
(ougonki)

It would not make sense to call this helmet's ornamentation like that of the Golden Tree.

This becomes even clearer when presented with a distinct example of Golden Tree ornamentation.

Golden helm of the heavy cavalry Tree Sentinels who serve the Erdtree.

Very few are permitted to wear a golden wood crest of such size as seen on this helm.

黄金樹に仕える重騎士
ツリーガードの黄金の兜

黄金の樹冠はひと際大きく
それが許される者は稀であった

Tree Guard Helmet

Heavy knights who serve the Golden Tree
Tree Guard's gold helmet

The Golden Tree crown is splendidly large
Those allowed to wear this are rare

Note: English & 日本語

 • "Great Tree"... continued

Here it is very clearly stated that the ornamentation looks like a Golden Tree,
and is even called that, or rather "Tree of Gold":

黄金の樹
おうごんのき」
(ougon・no・ki)

Which means the ornamentation on the Crucible Tree Helm is of a different tree.

Specifically, the Great Tree.

Remember, the Golden Tree came from the Crucible.
And the Crucible, is somewhat, portrayed by Siluria's Tree Spear.
Which shows a striking similarity to the Crucible Tree Helm.
