In addition to multiplayer, where you can directly connect with other players and travel together, the game supports a unique asynchronous online element that allows you to feel the presence of others.
Elden Ring Multiplayer Guide
Multiplayer Menu
The Multiplayer Menu can be accessed from the "Multiplayer" tab within the Main Menu. Here, diverse Multiplayer Items can be used to interact with other players.
Players can also set a Multiplayer Password and a Group Password from the Multiplayer Menu.
- Setting a Multiplayer Password will make it so you can only be matched for most multiplayer features by other people using the same password. This, however, does not avoid Invasions nor support multiplayer (e.g. summoned Hunters who activated a Blue Cipher Ring).
- The Group Password gives special priority to certain multiplayer features from players who use that same Group Password. Meaning players are more likely to come across world messages, summon signs, bloodstains, phantoms, and so on from peers sharing a Group Password.
Message Menu
The message menu allows you to write messages that players in other worlds can read at the same spot that you left them. Elden Ring allows you to change the format of the message and add Gestures to the message as well.
Players can rate other people's messages. When a message is rated, the HP of the player that left the message will be replenished.
Multiplayer Items in Elden Ring
Players are able to use Multiplayer Items to engage in the different types of multiplayer experiences. This can be done from either the Inventory or the Multiplayer Menu. Here are all the existing Multiplayer Items and their effects.

Blue Cipher Ring
Puts you into a Ready state to answer, should someone in another world call for help via a White Cipher Ring.
You will be summoned to their world as a Hunter and multiplayer will begin once you are summoned.
Your goal will be to defeat invading players.
Purchasable at Roundtable Hold.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

White Cipher Ring
Automatically requests the help of a Hunter from another world when invaded by a Bloody Finger.
Can also be used after being invaded to summon a Hunter.
Summoning rescuers may not always be possible.
Purchasable at Roundtable Hold.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Furlcalling Finger Remedy
Reveals Summon Signs to invoke players from other worlds.
Cooperative Summon Signs are shown in Gold, while competitive signs are Red.
For either type of multiplayer the summoning player becomes Host of Fingers.
Furlcalling Finger Remedy can be crafted using two Erdleaf Flowers.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Finger Severer
Use as a Host of Fingers to select a summoned player and send them back to their world.
Use when you have been summoned to another player's world to return to your own world.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Tarnished's Furled Finger
Creates a summon sign for cooperative multiplayer.
Arrive as a cooperator (Furled Finger) with the objective of defeating the area boss of the world to which you were summoned.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Duelist's Furled Finger
Leaves a Red Summon Sign to play competitive multiplayer.
This sign will appear in the world of other players so they may summon you as a Duelist Adversary.
Your objective will be to defeat the Host of Fingers of the world to which you were summoned.
Leaving a second Summon Sign will vanish the old one.
Found on a corpse at Stormhill. Map Link
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Tarnished's Wizened Finger
Use to write messages. Your messages will be conveyed to other worlds, allowing other players to read them.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Bloody Finger
Attempts to invade another player's world.
If the invasion is successful, the competitive multiplayer will begin, with you as a Bloody Finger.
The goal is to defeat the Host of Fingers of the other world.
It is possible to re-invade the world you previously invaded.
Obtained by completing White Mask Varre's questline.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Taunter's Tongue
Beckons Bloody Fingers to come invade your world.
This allows you to be invaded even without a Furled Finger cooperator present, and reduces the amount of time before re-invasion is possible.
It also allows for a second invader to join multiplayer. (With two invaders, the maximum number of cooperators becomes one.)
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Recusant Finger
Attempts an invasion of another player's world.
If successful, you will arrive as an invader (Recusant) with the
objective of defeating the Host of Fingers of that world.
It can be found on a table in one of the rooms of Volcano Manor. Map Link

Small Golden Effigy
Send a cooperative summon sign to several nearby summoning pools (activated pools only).
In cooperative multiplayer, your objective will be to defeat the area boss of the world to which you were summoned.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Small Red Effigy
Sends competitive sign to several nearby summoning pools (activated pools only).
This sign will appear in the world of other players so they may summon you as a Duelist Adversary.
Your objective will be to defeat the Host of Fingers of the world to which you were summoned.
Found on a corpse at Stormhill. Map Link
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Festering Bloody Finger
Attempts to invade another player's world.
If the invasion is successful, the competitive multiplayer will begin, with you as a Bloody Finger.
The goal is to defeat the Host of Fingers of the other world.
This item is consumable.
(Can also be used from the Multiplayer menu.)

Mohg's Great Rune
A Great Rune of the shardbearer Mohg.
Its blessing grants a blessing of blood to summoned phantoms, and imparts a Phantom Great Rune upon successful invasion.
Mohg and Morgott are twin brothers, and their Great Runes are naturally similar.
But Mohg's rune is soaked in accursed blood, from his devout love for the wretched mire that he was born into far below the earth.
Phantom Great Rune
Item for online play.
Obtained after using the Mohg's Great Rune and invading another world.
Consumed upon use.
Enemies inside the invaded world receive a blessing of blood, which boosts their attack power when blood loss occurs nearby. Also, your HP recovers when blessed enemies defeat a player.
Multiplayer Notes
Unlike previous games, while you are in other player's worlds, you can collect materials in the overworld, and pick up items dropped by enemies.

Unless I've missed something, it's only 1-3 player co-op, not 1-4.

I really dont get why people summon people who are like 50x their level to just wipe the game for them. Too scared to actually play the game you paid 60 whole dollars for, like wtf.

replying is deactivated here for a reason. nobody like pvp, we hate all of you invaders, prepared predators who prevent any coop in this game. wake up, you are poison and there is no real pvp in this game.

From soft, I have a great idea. Make. Great rune that prevents invaders as long as the rune is active.
You can make up a boss or something and he can drop it.
I invade a lot, and really feel bad now because I can’t tell the difference between toxic ganks I want to murder and someone just wanting to game with their girlfriend or something.
Just a switch or something for no invasions would make the game significantly better easily. I would hate being on invaded when I’m just trying to play with my friend.

is there a list that show all the boss that represent the open world area. So far as i know, if you kill the old general in the snow mountain castle, you cant summon anyone aymore for the whole right part of snow mountain even if the ice dragon and deathbird in snow mountain are still alive.

Not all invaders are toxic, just like not all hosts and phantoms are wholesome. You don’t sign up for a team, and I’ve seen crap from allies who quit on you (finger serverer) or t-bag their dead host, or from hosts who kick you out before you collect your reward, or who summon you for an ambush duel session. You can’t change people’s toxic behavior, but for own peace of mind you can block players accounts and never deal with them again. I’m not saying block every invader (let’s be real), but there was one that kept popping inside a boss fight, so I blocked the player and so far did not encounter him again. I don’t know how well this works on PC, but on the PS it seems to work fine.

I leave myself on Mute but leave the chat on in case someone wanted to communicate something, and I have to say I love me a chatty Host or FF.
It can be distracting sometimes, but this one time me and another FF escorted a Host from Drainage Channel to Malenia's boss room. The guy never fought her before and you can imagine the panic once the initial cutscene ended. Once the shock wore off and he landed a few hits, he began to laugh gleefully when he discovered his Fire Incantations were dealing heavy damage. It was overall entertaining and he was nice enough to thank us when it was over. 10/10 Would line up to be summoned by him again :)

It hurts my brain to see so many sunbros just beeline toward me during invasions and just let the host get rekt by PvE, like dude your job is to bodyguard the host not 1v1 the red guy.

For the longest time I was avoiding multiplayer for fear of cheaters and cheese builds invading me left and right. By time I was halfway through Mt. Gelmir, I manned up, switched to online, and decided my +16 Naginata was good enough. And....I was right. I don't invade, but I help as a co-op summon and it's a lot of fun. I like that I can send my summon sign from anywhere, even from horseback, and the adventures I have helping hosts add some much needed spice to the playthrough. Diving into danger, killing bosses, and the short celebrations after are wholesome and very satisfying.
My only complaint is that while I'm summoned, my spirit summon (usually Mimic), goes away permanently. Oh, and connection errors are a pain.

If anyone knows the peak time for multiplayer let me know. Tried reading the steamchart for like an hour mybrain can't handle it. Drop your timezone too if you will
- Anonymous
Multiplayer is cool, but I don't really like it. Sometimes you are waiting minutes, it's just Radagon, Malenia and maybe Godfrey, so many connections errors!!!, the host dies quickly, because the HP is much more, you have to change your weapons and playstyle (For me: Blade of Death and Eochaid's Dancing Blade). In 20 or more attempts only one time we finished Elden Beast.

For those wondering, the Gold-pickled fowl foot stacks with the multiplayer bonus
This game would bennefit a lot from a matchmaking feature. Let the player access some filters, like cooperative or invasion/invader level range, even items filters (like testing anti Rivers of Blood builds, or avoiding these encounters). If a RL1 wants to invade a RL125, and the RL125 wants to invade a RL1, why not let them do it? And you may let an option for a open search after not finding any other player within you filters.
The system they developed for the Sousls series was cool and all, but just feel too outdated now.

man random coop is such a crap in this game eather you don't get summoned for ages or if you do open world co op romance is boring and slow

Multiplayer is borderline unplayable on PC with constant crashes and disconnects. And it's almost completely dead, takes like 10 minutes to get invasions or be summoned in all but a few areas. DS3 had a more active multiplayer before the servers shut down than ER has.
Shameful for FROM to leave the PC port in such an unacceptable state for months and they seemingly just don't care at all and have done literally nothing to fix it. Any other dev would've been dragged over burning coals for this but FROM gets a free pass and an "oh well, let's all hope they make an advertised selling point of the game we paid for be baseline functional next patch!". I'm never one of their games again, this is ridiculous.
- Anonymous
some mentions of summons signs, I've only seen one at caria manor before loretta and one or two in a dungeon here and there, I stopped using the furled finger to be able to see summon signs when it became apparent I would not be able to use spirit summons in a boss room if I forgot to deactivate it.

I wonder what it was like when the game first came out, because at this point it’s like nobody is even playing the game. For summoning at least.
Malenia has a lot of summoning going on, but pretty much nowhere else does, besides some early game areas
After coop mode came out i am now wondering why coudnt they do it in og game? This is open world game with ton filed bosses, and dungeons and places what requiring torrent. But all of it basicly locked, you need to resummon after every boss, all caves are locked and walking in open world without torrent is really boring.
So you can invade to someone only if he has a phantom, so they can not completely cheese game, I understand that. But then you have hunters what spawns after 3 seconds you invade and now this is 3 on 1. Literally why should hunters even exist. And even if host has 3 phantoms and tongue active only one red can invade. Phantastic.

How is it possible that there is only one summon sign showing up at sellia tunnel at level 40?
I’ve progressed through the game normally. I spent money on other stuff besides leveling but still.
It’s just one person who is being summoned by other people, and then they show up for me after a few minutes.
There really isn’t more??
- Anonymous
Been pretty surprised by the gaming community… the presence of summon signs totally drops off at night
A friend and I were trying to do co-op through Altus Plateau, as there's still a bunch of stuff for him to do there, and he couldn't see my summon sign... and we tried at multiuple graces around the place.
Once we tried inside the capital, it worked just fine.
I get the whole thing where it locks you out of co-op within a legacy dungeon/catacomb/etc after you beat the boss, but the open world should not have the same kinda restrictions.

If you die while coop'ing the game should give you the option to at least stay and watch the rest of the fight. I want to see if the host makes it. I'm emotionally invested at this point

Try elden-ring-coop.com for finding players online and help with bosses
Y'know most of the connection issues could be solved for PC if From ditched Easy Anti-cheat. I've ran into numerous blatant cheaters, it does nothing but lag the game.

I am sorry for asking but where can i find information about rune rewards after killing bosses as a summon?
- Anonymous
I just invaded a guy that visually had 0 lag and was moving flawlessly. I hit him 6 times with flame strike and he took no damage or animation. Then suddenly he took 1306 damage. How does this happen in 2022?
- Anonymous
I'm glad this whole online thing can be turned off - some of us are not only not interested, but against the concept. Still, however, From insists on pushing the concept with these stupid NPC 'Invasions'. Offline is offline - stop trying to pretend.

Co op is completely broken. I can wait for 10 minutes for summon signs to appear and eventually they all show up at once, dozens of them. The game just isnt't working sometimes. What a joke.

why is the coop so bad me and my girlfriend just want to run around and explore and kill bosses and enemies but it's constantly disconnecting and my girlfriend is not good at the game but she has to be host because for whatever reason i can't host so when she dies i leave her world then we are constantly going against invaders that we don't want and then the cherry on top i cant refill my flasks or anything which is already reduced from me being weakened by being a higher lvl than her.

If I summon someone to help me with a boss and I die, do they get sent back to their world immediately or are they allowed to remain and try to finish off the boss and have it register as defeated for me?
- Anonymous
Is there a true multi-player where you don't get sent back on death or boss completion?

Password phantoms need to be removed entirely or reworked based on level tiers in like in DS2. I cant believe DS2 actually got the system right, its game breaking in Elden Ring.
Theres no point in balancing weapons, bosses, enemies, etc. When a max level password phantom can be summoned into your game, give you end game weapons, runes, armor, etc. and proceed to carry you through the game one shotting all enemies and bosses.
It makes PvE balance a joke since someone else plays for you, and makes PvP balance non existent as you can just gank everyone and one shot them under level 60.
If you're right up against a player-resistant breakable object (like the lean-to shacks all over the place), and get summoned, it'll break when you come back.
- Anonymous
is there a location to email or message for a brand new guy to ask questions?
has anyone figured out how the area boss mechanic works? which bosses count as area bosses, that will lock you out of co-op once defeated? does each area boss have a 'radius' of jurisdiction? e.g. tree sentinel is the area boss of everything up until Stormveil? but then do Agheel and the Deathbird have their own areas? do they overlap? it's really confusing my friends and I

I’ve played souls since DS but never engaged in coop or pvp. I know it’s changed over the years however I’m not sure how the scaling works. I understand passwords and any level can join. What I don’t understand is the weapon scaling with RL. I’m rolling a RL1 with a +17. With this situation what level should I be placed with. I haven’t seen a a sign in forever just NPC. Really I’m not looking for someone to walk me through boss I can do that myself. What I need is invade for the white mask quest line.
Who else is RL1ing this lol. I’m surprised on how much can be done just in weapons and items.
- Anonymous
I’ve been looking and maybe I’ve missed or don’t fully understand leveled weapon stats.
I rolling RL1 but have a lvl16 weapon. What are the rules for invading and coop. I need to do white mask quest line.
Thanks

if you can't find a friend's summoning sign for co-op, try going to a place where the area boss have not been defeated. It worked twice for me.
- Anonymous
It seems that the game considers that Lyndell Capital and Lyndell Capital of Ash are two different places, since it does not allow us to coincide there to play coop with friends. I think Fromsoftware there has been brutally wrong.
- Anonymous
So I did some math on the buff you get when someone in your group activates the group password buff. I was getting a 4.78% buff to my runes gained.

The upside of having a group password should also be noted. If certain enemies are slain by people with the same group password, everyone gets bonus rune acqusition.

i’m on PS4 and my friend is on PS5 and we have had some good success co oping with a password in the past (setting both multiplayer and group password) but lately it has been incredibly hit or miss (moreso the latter). we both restart our systems / internet when troubleshooting and haven't been able to play together consistently in the last couple of days. I think summoning worked 3 times out of 30+ attempts. the inconsistency is a bit ridiculous. we’re meeting all the conditions for co op i’m sure, I have been scouring any relevant thread I can find and at this point i’m at a loss. i’m curious if many others are experiencing these cross gen issues, specifically PS4/PS5. cheers fellow tarnished!

I don't know if it's because two of us are on the series X and our other buddy is one the one s but the games desync and it'll tell him and I that each other have left the host world however we are both still in our friends world and the enemies glitch out and take damage from both of us and teleport around the room to were we are. It's pretty cool. It's like we're fighting bosses through different dimensions.

After playing with my friend i noticed my health went almost identical to my own once they upgraded their weapon, at a +9 blasphemous blade I was only missing 30 or so HP. Where as before I was getting one shot by almost everything while they had +5. So I think weapon level plays a huge part in scaling

Messages need fixing, the fact that placing them in the middle of boss fogs or bonfires literally stops you from interacting from then breaks the game.

It should say that you get less runes from bosses if you summon someone. I got under 400,000 from both Melania and Mohg with a summon (not ash)

A message to FromSoft, from a guy who has been invading since Demon's Souls on PS3:
You cannot stop me; not now, not ever.
Here is a list of things you've tried so far, which have not worked to deter me. In fact they've only made me harder, erm I mean stronger.
* I, as an invader, am always out-numbered: guaranteed 2v1, most often 3v1- it matters not. I laugh at your "throw more bodies at the problem" mentality as the grave I've dug for hosts and their cooperators is bottomless. The extra bodies merely serve my flasks.
* I, as an invader, do not care that my souls have been dropped at the back of the map because I died invading someone else's world. Those 90k were infinitesimal and I'll make them back with the next 26 consecutive kills on hosts and their cooperators.
* I, as an invader, scoff at the fact hosts 'pick up where they left off' after ALT+F4'ing Elden Ring once I've killed their carries in front of them. This only boosts my ego further.
* I, as an invader, can't get enough of the hunters you've willingly led to the slaughter. So what if their hosts are so trash at this game that 2 cooperators weren't enough? Throw another body in the grave and add another sip to my flasks.
* I, as an invader, adore the meta-weapon-art-crutching that causes hosts and their cooperators to fall into predictable patterns of attack.
* I, as an invader, SIMPLY CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF THE WATERED DOWN AI OF THE MOBS when I invade. Why would the pests bother attacking when they can simply walk around the host, looking at him like he's got candy for them? It matters not, they all die in the end.
* I, as an invader, adore how you spawn me 500 miles from the host. I care not if you spawn me outside the walls of Castle Sol, I'll put on my nikes and sprint up that host's dark moon so fast he'll be forced to say "NANI!?"
* I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting, as you've given invaders so many disadvantages it is impossible to keep up.
As you can see, none of the above deters me- I've accumulated over 500 rune arcs across multiple invaders ranging from SL45 to SL160.
Here are some things you could try, but I can assure you they also will not work:
* Force invaders down to 1hp at the start of each invasion - So what, I'll still win 80% of my invasions.
* Ban my steam account - So what, I'll buy another.
* Ban my computer's hardware profile - So what, I'll buy another computer.
* Range ban my ISP's subnet - So what, I'll sign a new ISP contract.
* Disallow multiplayer from my state - So what, I'll buy a new house and move.
* Disallow multiplayer in my country - So what, I'll immigrate to Japan and bring the fight to your plebians on your home turf.
* Send a Black Knife Assassin to kill me - I WILL BECOME THE EMBODIMENT OF A VENGEFUL SPIRIT AND SO HELP ME I'LL INVADE FROM THE AFTER LIFE.
FromSoft, as you can see, you cannot deter us. Your resistance only strengthens our resolve.
To that end maybe let off a little bit so I don't have to go so hard on people to sustain my hard, I mean strong, nature.

I'm no tester, so hopefully someone who knows what they're doing can run this over; however, I can say my experience across multiple characters, and that of my friends, and their friends.
There are co-op restrictions that aren't listed on the wiki yet. Specifically, clearing certain bosses blocks off summoning in a region they're connected to, even if other bosses are still in that region. Assuming there's no fog wall in the way however, you can summon from another region and take a long walk back there; but the co-op regions aren't mapped out yet, and are notably different from the regions on the map.
For example, Castle Morne is an obvious spot to test this. If you kill the boss inside it, you can no longer summon within the castle; but if you haven't locked out the nearby region, you can summon on the stairs up to the castle, and just walk inside. Theoretically, it could work in the opposite direction, where you would clear all of that island but the castle, and then summon in the castle and trek out from it.
Another thing I've seen personally and heard several people attest to is that a few specific bosses seem to lock off almost all of Limgrave when killed together: the Mariner in Summonwater, the eastern bridge's Night Cavalry, and the introductory Tree Sentinel; even though other bosses such as Agheel remain, that's within the regions these bosses cover. Theoretically, you should be able to summon just before Margit without killing him, and still be able to go back into a cleared wider Limgrave (such as for the Agheel fight).
These restrictions are unaffected by password matchmaking.

Is it possble to summon 3 friends and to play at 4 players in coop? Because we have tried but we could not have more than 2 friend.

I think it would be cool if being a chaos follower was more fleshed out in multi-player. Like being a chaos follower would make you hostile to all parties in multi-player except other chaos followers, so if you were summoned by a host who isn't a frenzy follower, you would be able to kill them and so on. And invading would be a free for all.
