Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring are companions, often mimicking the Lands Between's Enemies, summoned by the the Spirit Calling Bell to aid you in Combat. This page covers how they function, the spirit ashes available, summon costs, and a community-driven list of their relative strength.

How to use Spirit Ashes

To use Spirit Ashes, players must first obtain the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna at the Church of Elleh [Map Link].

Similar to Items, Spirit Ashes can be equipped to and used from your Quick Slots or Pouch. However, they can only be used while not in Multiplayer Coop and when near a Rebirth Monument.

After summoning in a given area, you are not allowed to summon again in that area until you rest at any Sites of Grace or Fast Travel.

  • Players may reuse the Spirit Ashes to dismiss a summon.
  • Leaving the boundary of a valid summoning area will dismiss any active spirits.
  • Spirits may only be summoned once per encounter, so you cannot re-summon them after they die during a boss fight.
  • Spirits cannot be summoned while the effects of the Furlcalling Finger Remedy are active. Use the remedy again to cancel its effects.
  • Summoning spirits require either FP or HP depending on the summon.

Monument to Summon Spirits

  • Players must be near a Rebirth Monument, stone obelisks found at many Points of Interest and nearly every boss arena, to use Spirit Ashes.
  • A monument icon, depicted below, will appear on the left side of the screen when conditions are met:

Unlocking Spirit Ashes Upgrades

Roderika is the only NPC capable of upgrading Spirit Ashes. She offers her services after a short side quest:

  1. Talk to Roderika at the Stormhill Shack. [Map Link]
  2. Head to Stormveil Castle and collect Chrysalids' Memento. [Map Link]
  3. Return to Roderika and return the momento.
  4. Travel to the Roundtable Hold, and talk to her and to Blacksmith Hewg several times until you exhaust their dialogue options.
  5. Reload the area by leaving or other means.
  6. Roderika will now be sat across from Blacksmith Hewg and is able to upgrade your Spirit Ashes

Upgrading Spirit Ashes

Spirit Ash Upgrades universally increase the summons' Attack Power and Defenses.

There are two different types of Spirit Ashes, each with their own Upgrade Materials:

Giant Rat Ashes are unique in that enhancing the spirit ashes will increase their numbers.

Ranking of all Spirit Ashes.

This is a community-editable rank of Spirit Ashes, the objective is to help the community identify the best performing and worst performing Ashes based on their FP consumption and overall viability.

  • The initial rank on the page is calculated based on how much damage a fully upgraded Spirit does alone against a Draconic Tree Sentinel.
  • There are 6 Tiers and it goes as follows: D (<20), C (>= 20 <40), B (>= 40 <60), A (>=60 <80), +S (>=80), -S (Does something special)
  • If 2 Spirits have roughly the same amount of Damage, Summoning cost will be compared. Currently (February 2022) there are 64 Spirit Ashes.
  • Depending on Playstyle of the Player and Enemy values can change.
  • Spirit Ashes are situational. It is best to try out different ashes that you have and see which works when.

I noticed the tuning price tags on spirit ashes are varied. Is the rune cost difference based on quality? Or just From's opinion on the ashes worth?

      • Anonymous

Ghost glovewort is for anything that has an actual name, like Latenna and Tiche, and puppets. Everything else just uses grave glovewort.

        • Anonymous

Why isn't this page sorted by normal spirits and renowned spirits? Gotta say, it's getting pretty tedious having to click on EACH page to make sure they need Grave Glovewort instead of Ghost when it's all sorted in-game...

64 spirit ashes. Pretty sure that's close to, if not more than, the number of places / situations in which you can summon them. For all the times I've thought to myself "This would be nice if we had just this one extra thing" when looking at all the rest of the equipment / spells / items etc., this actually looks like From put too much attention into something for once.

So anybody know if upgrading your Spirit Ashes affects matchmaking like PvP and Co-op? Like how upgrading your weapons does.

              • Anonymous

Now think about this, most of legendary spirit ashes are women. Why? Didn't they like die in a miserable death? Why does fromsoft hate women? That's some lore to miyazaki's real soul and heart.

I'm getting towards late game but there are a couple of things relating to spirit ashes I should have worked out much sooner, hopefully new players reading this long arsed comment will find something useful and not make the same mistakes I did and waste runes as well as both types of glovewart upgrading spirit ashes they end up not using based on what they read online, the spirit ash rankings in their respective Elden Ring wiki pages and comments only to work out too late that apart from two, they don't deserve their ranking places or live up to the hype around them. I should have seen through the utter bollocks being spouted by certain spirit ash summon's groupies in comment sections much sooner than I eventually did.

The lone wolves ashes can be safely upgraded and relied on to take you a surprising distance into later game areas. Both so-called elite summons Lhutel the headless and banished knight Oleg are available as early as Limgrave, one drops from the boss in Tombsward catacombs the other from the boss in Fringefolk hero's grave. Neither of them should be upgraded until they have been summoned and thoroughly tested against bosses and enemies to be sure you like what they do and they suit how you play, but even then I wouldn't recommend taking them past +6 depending how many ghost glovewart [7] you have and how much you like them. There are two spirits that do live up to the hype and will give much more back after being upgraded than any of the others.

Apart from not believing all the bollocks I was reading, the most important thing I should have been doing was testing out new spirit ashes as I was finding them in the same area and at the same level. I think that is the best way to get a feel for what new summons are about and if you like them enough to think they are worth upgrading, that isn't what I did. I was putting upgrades into summons I had found much earlier blindly based on what I was reading thinking they would make some of the harder bosses more manageable, they didn't and I never used those ashes again. My best example is the albinauric ashes found behind caria manor, I upgraded them to +5 as soon as I found them after reading comments on their wiki page, after summoning them once I think those were troll comments because they got wiped out faster than any summons I've used and it was by not overly powerful enemies.

The two summons I think definitely live up to the hype around them are Omen killer Rollo and the dung eater puppet they have both been outstanding for me and I'd have no hesitation recommending them to anyone. In fairness though I don't have black knife Tiche and I don't use black flame monk Amon, both have stellar reputaions but so does Oleg and I found him okay at best. The mimic tear is a monster summons if you have an optimised monster build, if not it's just another you in the boss room and there are definitely a handful of bosses where that isn't enough.

                  • Anonymous

I have a question, I've got Omen killer Rollo at +9 and he's never needed support from me against any boss I've used him for, but the red albinaurics at the blood-filled lake hit hard and attack as a group they can really f**k your s**t up if you aren't paying attention. I thought the lords heal incantation would keep him in the fight longer, I've never used it before but the description for it says something like heals a great deal for the player and nearby allies, but this isn't how many casts it took to heal Rollo with half his health bar left, its how many flasks. I had to cast it over and over, with nearly 200 FP it took five or six flasks worth of casts to fully heal him I was only seeing a very small increase in his health bar each time it was cast. I can't see how this would be even remotely viable unless you dedicated six flasks worth of FP just to keep him alive and assuming whatever boss you were in the middle of fighting let you do it in the first place. The second tier erdtree blessing incantation isn't much better, it took significantly less casts to heal him but it was very slow. I was just standing there waiting for not far off ten minutes or at least it felt that long to heal his HP from half empty. Can anyone confirm this is normal and what I should expect to see if I try to keep my spirit summons alive with support incantations?

                    • Anonymous

I have no clue what spirit tuning is doing without some stats to compare it to - it's hard to know what to upgrade when all you see is +1, +2 etc. Yeah it's "better" in a source: dude trust me way, but it sucks that there's no in-game data or external guide on what changes when you start sinking resources into these

                      • Anonymous

Dung Eater puppet is so good for casters it's not even funny. He seems to almost always immediately draw aggro from a boss unless I'm up against a very mobile enemy like an ulcerated tree spirit since he starts with his "I EAT ****" battle cry, he's tanky enough that you really don't have to worry about him and cast spells at a distance. The few times the boss decides to look at me, he immediately redraws aggro on himself by just giant dad greatsword swinging his way through the boss, if he's too far away to hit the boss and redraw aggro he goes for the wraiths which will divert the boss's attention to him.

I seriously got him just because I thought it would be funny to have the poo poo man as a summon only to be blown away at how useful he is. Even Malenia got ganked by him greatsword spamming and me casting spells. Legit had her stuck in a corner and in a near constant stun lock for phase 1.

Has anyone noticed a reduction in the damage their go-to spirit summons are doing after the latest update? I'm especially interested in Lhutel and Oleg. There's nothing about spirit ashes getting nerfed on the wiki page for the patch notes, and I can't say for sure myself because I didn't get Oleg from the fringefolk grave dungeon until after 1.05. But if you read the comments on Oleg's wiki page you get the impression that he is a monster summons with some claiming he carried them through this or that boss fight, but when I summoned him at blood-filled lake near Mohgwyn's palace he was upgraded to +6 and his damage for a single hit was between 70 to 90 first time I summoned him and never went over 110 the second time.

I only started to think they had been nerfed to some extent when I summoned Lhutel also +6 in the same place. She did more damage than Oleg but not by very much and it was exactly the same when I summoned one after the other at impassable greatbridge and saw the same sort of damage from them there as well, neither hit for more than 130 and it doesn't seem right. I was using Lhutel to speed up the rune farm much earlier upgraded to +2 and +3 she wasn't having any trouble killing the Radahn soldiers or the mounted knight. Can anyone confirm this or is it my imagination and damage in the low hundreds is what those two elite summons have always done? I'm asking because I can do much more damage myself with incantations for the FP cost of summoning those two.

Greatshield Soldiers are my instant squad. They think I'm super funny, and they all like my music recommendations. They ask me for dating advice and never talk behind my back. Greatshield Soldiers are always there to hype me up, and support me at any contest or competitions I enter. I credit Greatshield Soldiers, at least in part, for making me the person I am.

Taking the idea from finger maiden Therolina, I tested this out: You can heal your summons, at least with Lord's Heal. I tried it on banished knight Engvall, the greatshielder ashes, and the demi humans. Not that it would be a huge fight priority most of the time, but it's good to know.

Which ashes deal primarily lightning damage? I know Kristoff and the Farum Azula beasts do some. Are there any others?

Next in the dlc: summon the spirits of 5 headless runebears, who teleport around and cause bloodloss. Also cause an explosion when they die for good measure . 10/10 would buy it.

The tarnished summons their spirits to cuddle with them when they go to bed. I will not elaborate any further

So spirit ashes are deceased creatures, and puppets are living creatures ensnared by some kind of evil magic that makes them completely obedient to their master. Would be cool if you could choose to free the puppets and restore their independence. Maybe even recruit them as allies or unlock some unique dialogue, quests and item rewards.

I'd love a royal revenant spirit ash. Those guys are a royal pain in the rear, summoning one to fight for me would be cool as hell. No doubt this guy would shred.

                                        • Having a Royal Revenant spirit summon would be cool. Those guys are a massive pain to deal with, and I'd like to have one on my side for a change. No doubt such a summon would absolutely shred and stance-break whatever is unlucky enough to become the target of its ire.

I'm surprised this info isn't in the list: Rollo can proc bleed with his Great Omenkiller Cleavers, and Finlay can inflict Rot with her Cleanrot Knight moveset.

Spirit summons really don’t last long with main bosses on new game 5/6+ & beyond. The elden beast will kill dung eater within a min & I think he’s the tankiest

If you use ashes then you are playing on hard mode. Don't let elitists tell you otherwise. You're making the boss harder and less predictable which makes it more difficult. You're making the game harder than it normally is.

I'm sure every player ever has seen an enemy and had their own unique "what do you MEAN, I can't get that as a spirit ash?!" which makes me oddly happy. Anyway, I just came here to complain that there's no giant ant spirit ash!

                                                  • Anonymous

Marionette soldier should be S or A. They make several bosses (especially duo bosses) chumps due to their non-stop arrow barrage constantly drawing aggro, and at +9 they're tanky enough to last entire boss fights.

                                                    • Anonymous

Summoning spirit ashes becomes a REAL problem when you rely on them too much. I only summon them for unfair bosses like tree sentinel duo. Not summon them for every single fricking boss in the game unless you're doing a summon only build.

tbh having a spirit fighting alongside you make you feel a sense of camaraderie, and you feel a bit sad when they die. anyone feel me?

                                                        • Anonymous

I really wish that there were more Spirit Ashes that changed themselves in some way once you upgrade them enough, only the Rats do this and while that's neat, I think it's a wasted opportunity that they didn't do more along those lines. Like Page becoming upgraded into High Page and getting the Pulley Crossbow that they have, combining Oleg and Engvall together if you have them both +10, The Albinauric's becoming Red Albinauric's, I could state more idea's but I think I've made my point.

I don't get why Lhutel the Headless is still ranked 'S' on this list. I've tried to use that ash with multiple characters now and every single time it massively underwhelms. Makes boss combat completely unpredictable because of the way it appears and disappears.. Also its damage output doesn't impress me as the spirit spends most of the time just flitting in and out of existence... I'd rate Lhutel a B at best.

                                                            • Anonymous

Yeah I’m honestly not too big of a fan on spirit ashes, if i get frustrated on a boss…i have the easy fix…mimic, and then i feel completely disappointed that i have no self control to not use it lol

                                                              • Anonymous

This would be a good system if you cut all of the legendary ashes like Black Knife Tiche or Mimic Tear. These are wayyy too strong.

                                                                • Several notes on some Rare/Legendary summons:

Deenh buff doesn't stack with your auras like Golden Vow, Finley HoT and Fire resist buffs will also be overwritten by any HoT or body buff like Flame, Grant Me Strength.

Engval requires more time than Oleg to perform his special attacks, which frequently opens him up for interrupts even with such a high amount of poise.

Ogha's attacks knock targets back quite a bit, and her Gravity shots have punch-through. She is a Red-Eye summon though, so do not expect her to follow you around.

Rollo has high poise, but very slow movement and attack speed. He can proc bleed, but Floh will do the same much faster AND cooler.

Lhutel, and other shield-bearing Knights, has quite a few AI inconsistencies which prioritise survivability over damage. Which would be tolerable if it was not for her aggro whipe on every teleport, making her both a mediocre tank and an inconsistent burst DPS.

And Tricia frankly prefers to shield herself over you as her spiritual leader. I usually get 1-2 shields per fight while she enjoys all the rest.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Sometimes, they will do a great job attacking enemies and/or bosses, or they might just find a random dude across the map to beat up.

                                                                    • Anonymous

The Crystallian is no B-. Whoever tested the ashes did so against the Draconic Tree Sentinel who does blunt damage aka the Crystallian's only weakness. Against anything else it is TANKY AS HELL. I just used it *completely unupgraded* against Morgott and the dude could barely dent it.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

The lone wolves are better than a B surely. They attack rapidly and interrupt most attacks leaving many bosses stun locked for you to dispatch with ease. At +9 they have very high health also making them incredibly hard to deal with, plus they’re wolves.

                                                                          • Anonymous

having two fellas or a smelly tank distract mobs or bosses is great for slinging rocks at them from a distance :)

                                                                            • Anonymous

this ranking is complete nonsense? Lhutel the Headless is ranked S with specific mention of the deathblight..... that cant be used on any single enemy you can summon against? nor the fact the teleport dodge drops aggro??

                                                                              • Anonymous

Putrid corpse should be like a B- at least. They are tanky af and have the enemy aggro self buff which keeps bosses pretty busy on them while you wail a tune on them

                                                                                • Anonymous

Did they all really have to be silver? Fancy having creative imput in every summonable character and someone comes along and says okay good job on the colours and textures and details but they're all semen coloured now so

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Is there an explanation on what exactly spirit ashes are lore-wise?
I think they are the spirits of dead creatures and heroes that are buried at the root of the Erdree or something like that, but then I realise that Ranni sortof summoned a spirit ash of Rennala in her boss fight but Rennalla is technically still alive.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

This list is weird. It doesnt mention that dung eater can cause bleed and debuff enemies (which is a pretty big deal).

No mention of stormhawk and finlay using an aoe buff which affect the player, carmaan can heal himself with potion and engvall and oleg is about equally good (engvall cause a more stagger damage so why is oleg A+ while engvall is B?

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Would it kill you to put them in the order as they appear in your inventory? It's unnecessarily hard to figure out which ones you don't have.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

This is a odd question, does leveling spirit ashes affect weapon level? For example can a wl 0 with a +10 spirit still co-op with people at wl 0?

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

In defence of Lhutel I guess?? For me, Lhutel has tanked her way through every single boss fight, generally lasting longer than I do, and annoys the enemies/expertly dodges by just disappearing. Her lances are useful too…stealing my final blows but it's whatever. The disappearing act also gives her mad range, especially for bosses that move around a lot. Offence, defence, mobility, evasion, distraction—check. Though she does occasionally scare the hell out of you by just appearing. That +10 was a good investment, especially since you can get her reasonably early in the game.

                                                                                              • Anonymous
