Ranking of all Spirit Ashes.
This is a community-editable rank of Spirit Ashes, the objective is to help the community identify the best performing and worst performing Ashes based on their FP consumption and overall viability.
- The initial rank on the page is calculated based on how much damage a fully upgraded Spirit does alone against a Draconic Tree Sentinel.
- There are 6 Tiers and it goes as follows: D (<20), C (>= 20 <40), B (>= 40 <60), A (>=60 <80), +S (>=80), -S (Does something special)
- If 2 Spirits have roughly the same amount of Damage, Summoning cost will be compared. Currently (February 2022) there are 64 Spirit Ashes.
- Depending on Playstyle of the Player and Enemy values can change.
- Spirit Ashes are situational. It is best to try out different ashes that you have and see which works when.

This page should include the number of times spirit ashes can be upgraded

So many times, I enter the fog, summon my spirit ash, and then have to solo the boss because the ash insists on fighting whatever scrub enemy is on the other side of the fog. Just dumb.

i love spending half an hour in grey skeleton dungeon 9 so i can fight watchdog 5 that drops 3,100 runes and the worst spirit ash you've ever seen

In all honesty, I think this game would be 10x better if these things just never existed in the first place. I get this was supposed to help newer players to get into the game, but early game is easy enough to where it probably wouldn't be an issue anyway. They would have also had an easier time designing bosses when they don't have to worry about ashes. As compensation, the damage from endgame bosses could be reduced by, like, 20%. I know this wouldn't automatically solve every issue with this game, but I feel like that an Elden Ring without spirits would have been a better game.

Enemies that should have been Spirit Ashes:
Crucible Knights
Omens
Red Wolves
Fire Prelates
Zamor Knights
Leonine Misbegotten
Demi-Human Queen
Duelists and Rotten Duelists
Alabaster and Onyx Lords
Blaidd?
Alexander?

Wish you could sell spirit ashes because then at least I would have a use for them.

Lone wolf and fanged imps are really cool and really powerful if you know how to use them

Shame there's no renowned Cuckoo Knight summon. Guess I'll have to do it myself
I don't have my game open, there needs to be a table to tell me what's a "special" and a "Regular" ash so I can prepare for upgrades when I'm away from my game.

What does it mean if your summon has a banner with a tree on it?

I feel like we've looped back around to where people get upset at you if you don't use Spirit Ashes because they think you consider yourself superior to them

Land squirts should definitely NOT be ranked as low as D. They are actually really strong in many situations against melee-only enemies. Their poison clouds don't just stack up poison, but also deal damage really fast, and they're pretty darn tanky. Just take cover behind them and keep them buffed and alive with healing incantations and they quickly melt anything that comes near. Ainrun used them to great effect in his "trash summons only run" to get past some of the trickiest roadblocks, including draconic tree sentinel.

Would be a cool QOL Update for the page to list everything with 5 in a row instead of 4, so that it compares to the game's listing of items.
You'd see if you are missing something on first glance.

Kinda sucks that there are so many "Renowned" ashes, but only 6 count as "Legendary" for the achievement. Makes you wonder what even the point of a lot of them is, if there isn't even a reason to collect them for collection's sake. Every time I kill an optional dungeon boss and get another renowned (but not Legendary) ashes, I say "well that's cute, but I'm not going to use it instead of the +10 Engvall I've already got, so..."

I wish there were basilisk ashes. Unleashing minions to douse enemies with death gas would be satisfying.

Playing a necromancer and having a couple of skeletons I can summon that get back up if they don't get hit again when they Regen really completes the vibe.

If I use healing incantations, warming stones, or other sorts of healing items, can I give more health to my summons? I’d love to do a play through where I become Elden Lord by being the best healer in the Lands Between.

Either the damage threshold has changed or the ranking have been changed, but either way the description of what rank means what above the list doesn't match what's in the list at all now.
Either additional columns should be added for both subjective ranks (current) and the ranks based on the test fight, or you should just delete the explanation of the ranks.

Give your mimic a Prayerful Strike weapon and it is legit unkillable.

Would be kinda cool to have a Sprit Summon as an item you can get from a Remembrance boss in the DLC IMO
- Anonymous
Would be really cool if we get a Carian Knight summon that is Tarnished shaped like the summons.
- Anonymous
I think summoning in this game would be more interesting if Spirit Summons were allowed in all areas/dungeons, except in the boss rooms.
I don't understand the reasoning behind not being able to summon everywhere but only in some restricted areas?
If the argument is that it would make the game too easy, I would argue it's the fact that you can summon them in boss rooms that makes the game too easy with summons, not open world areas or dungeons. In the open world, it just makes the game more fun, because you're fighting many ennemies at once anyways.

Heyyyy when you try to sort the list by tier, it puts A at the top and S at the bottom. This is probably a bug?

So let me get this straight, Luthel does the most damage by a considerable margin and has good mobility with a teleport and has attacks to work at any range and is one of, if not the best for drawing attention and you have her at the lower end of S tier and have other summons that in your own descriptions acknowledge to be worse than luthel placed higher than her. What happened on this page?

I just beat the game with my crucible knight build and then grabbed all ten great glovewort and all the glovewort ball bearings. Now I'm going through NG+ trying out a bunch of different spirit ashes.
I never really liked NG+ cause it's just the same as the first time round but now I have all the items I want and all the bosses are incredibly easy. But now that I'm digging in a bit more into the spirit ashes - especially really good spirit ashes you only get late in the game like the Beastmen - I'm still getting to see a lot of items I want to find and use, so it's keeping my attention a lot better.
All in all, they're an interesting thing to add to your build and I'm certainly enjoying playing around with them.

An excellent way of reusing assets. The game has enough padding, might as well add some flavor to it. Word of warning, many spirit ashes are massively overhyped by the community. If anyone is reading this, try different ashes and see what works best for you, don't go wasting upgrade materials because some chump just happened to find the perfect summon for HIS build.

"Spirit Ashes Ranked." Yeah, no, I'll be out here using snake guy against Radagon because he's cute.

Love how their AI is totally random, meaning they can start attacking something 2km away from you making them totally useless.

They should add the dragonkin soldier, dudes huge it’d be sick

If they add more ashes in the future, I'd really like to see an omen. Axe or cleaver, doesn't matter to me.
- Anonymous
I wish one of those ashes could make us able to change their costume, spells, weapons and even name. With some trade off to avoid it beign broken but i think it would be nice.

I want ashes for:
- Lesser runebear
- The Lightning Rolling Goats
- Anonymous
Putrid corpse is decent C+ it attracts enemy aggro which is quite good for early game spellcasters and tanks like a champ at higher levels.
- Anonymous
I'd like to see in the future more spirit ashes, a blood soaked albinauric, sprinhares (for emotional support at least I guess), the venom spitting snake (or the Cristal one), a flock of vampires, a single old woman vampire (that sings when she's not agro), all these wouldn't break the game and would be good companions.

Does the level of your spirit ash affect the matchmaking in Caelid colosseum? Or is it still just based on your rune level and weapon level and your spirit ash summon level doesn't matter?

So glad i got the dung eater puppet on my pvp build this is gonna get poopy

I used Deenh for one of my runs. Midgame it's still viable. Then it just becomes a one-time buff and dies quite soon...forgive me, then again, my major comparison point for summons is fighting Malenia. If a summon is good against Malenia then it's one of the best.
- Anonymous
Some summons are great.
Some summons are good.
Some summons are decent.
Some summons might seem awful at first glance of use.
But they all have a job for a certain situation and suited build to assist, there's one for everybody, don't sleep on any of these whatsoever people, just use them properly and join the fray alongside instead of leaving them to it.

How do we not have a crucible knight summon yet (with a toned down moveset)

Better if you had a 'recommended summons against a boss' page instead of the relatively useless tier list. Dung man may well be S+ but there are still better options than him for some fights.
- Anonymous
Make an easy strategy section for summons in your strategies for boss fights... I'm not insulting anyone who uses them. Just saying if the strategy for say a caster is to use a summons to distract then it's a useless strategy for a caster not trying to get carried.

Did my first run of the game with ash summons on just about every boss and am now near the end of my first run not using any ash summons and gotta say it really makes the boss fights a different challenge but pushed me to get allot better at dodging and actually learning the movesets of bosses more carefully, for anyone looking level up their own playing skill level i strongly recommend doing a no ash summons run
- Anonymous
Would have been interesting to me if ash summons had various level of stat requirements to use (ie certain int faith arc ect.) so that specific summons would be part of the strategy of a certain build but just giving something this strong to every character for basically nothing seems like too much imo

If you talk to Roderika and immediately after that travel outside limgrave and sit at a site of grace to unlock the round table she will be there and you can skip the step of her quest that requires finding the chrysalid. This is useful on a summon heavy/only play through or to set yourself up at the start of a new character
We have black knife ashes, banished knight ashes, Albinauric archer, even mimic tear, but no crucible knight ashes? Curse you miyazaki

I noticed the tuning price tags on spirit ashes are varied. Is the rune cost difference based on quality? Or just From's opinion on the ashes worth?
- Anonymous
Ghost glovewort is for anything that has an actual name, like Latenna and Tiche, and puppets. Everything else just uses grave glovewort.
- Anonymous
Why isn't this page sorted by normal spirits and renowned spirits? Gotta say, it's getting pretty tedious having to click on EACH page to make sure they need Grave Glovewort instead of Ghost when it's all sorted in-game...

64 spirit ashes. Pretty sure that's close to, if not more than, the number of places / situations in which you can summon them. For all the times I've thought to myself "This would be nice if we had just this one extra thing" when looking at all the rest of the equipment / spells / items etc., this actually looks like From put too much attention into something for once.

So anybody know if upgrading your Spirit Ashes affects matchmaking like PvP and Co-op? Like how upgrading your weapons does.

Now think about this, most of legendary spirit ashes are women. Why? Didn't they like die in a miserable death? Why does fromsoft hate women? That's some lore to miyazaki's real soul and heart.

I'm getting towards late game but there are a couple of things relating to spirit ashes I should have worked out much sooner, hopefully new players reading this long arsed comment will find something useful and not make the same mistakes I did and waste runes as well as both types of glovewart upgrading spirit ashes they end up not using based on what they read online, the spirit ash rankings in their respective Elden Ring wiki pages and comments only to work out too late that apart from two, they don't deserve their ranking places or live up to the hype around them. I should have seen through the utter bollocks being spouted by certain spirit ash summon's groupies in comment sections much sooner than I eventually did.
The lone wolves ashes can be safely upgraded and relied on to take you a surprising distance into later game areas. Both so-called elite summons Lhutel the headless and banished knight Oleg are available as early as Limgrave, one drops from the boss in Tombsward catacombs the other from the boss in Fringefolk hero's grave. Neither of them should be upgraded until they have been summoned and thoroughly tested against bosses and enemies to be sure you like what they do and they suit how you play, but even then I wouldn't recommend taking them past +6 depending how many ghost glovewart [7] you have and how much you like them. There are two spirits that do live up to the hype and will give much more back after being upgraded than any of the others.
Apart from not believing all the bollocks I was reading, the most important thing I should have been doing was testing out new spirit ashes as I was finding them in the same area and at the same level. I think that is the best way to get a feel for what new summons are about and if you like them enough to think they are worth upgrading, that isn't what I did. I was putting upgrades into summons I had found much earlier blindly based on what I was reading thinking they would make some of the harder bosses more manageable, they didn't and I never used those ashes again. My best example is the albinauric ashes found behind caria manor, I upgraded them to +5 as soon as I found them after reading comments on their wiki page, after summoning them once I think those were troll comments because they got wiped out faster than any summons I've used and it was by not overly powerful enemies.
The two summons I think definitely live up to the hype around them are Omen killer Rollo and the dung eater puppet they have both been outstanding for me and I'd have no hesitation recommending them to anyone. In fairness though I don't have black knife Tiche and I don't use black flame monk Amon, both have stellar reputaions but so does Oleg and I found him okay at best. The mimic tear is a monster summons if you have an optimised monster build, if not it's just another you in the boss room and there are definitely a handful of bosses where that isn't enough.
- Anonymous
I have a question, I've got Omen killer Rollo at +9 and he's never needed support from me against any boss I've used him for, but the red albinaurics at the blood-filled lake hit hard and attack as a group they can really f**k your s**t up if you aren't paying attention. I thought the lords heal incantation would keep him in the fight longer, I've never used it before but the description for it says something like heals a great deal for the player and nearby allies, but this isn't how many casts it took to heal Rollo with half his health bar left, its how many flasks. I had to cast it over and over, with nearly 200 FP it took five or six flasks worth of casts to fully heal him I was only seeing a very small increase in his health bar each time it was cast. I can't see how this would be even remotely viable unless you dedicated six flasks worth of FP just to keep him alive and assuming whatever boss you were in the middle of fighting let you do it in the first place. The second tier erdtree blessing incantation isn't much better, it took significantly less casts to heal him but it was very slow. I was just standing there waiting for not far off ten minutes or at least it felt that long to heal his HP from half empty. Can anyone confirm this is normal and what I should expect to see if I try to keep my spirit summons alive with support incantations?

I have no clue what spirit tuning is doing without some stats to compare it to - it's hard to know what to upgrade when all you see is +1, +2 etc. Yeah it's "better" in a source: dude trust me way, but it sucks that there's no in-game data or external guide on what changes when you start sinking resources into these

Dung Eater puppet is so good for casters it's not even funny. He seems to almost always immediately draw aggro from a boss unless I'm up against a very mobile enemy like an ulcerated tree spirit since he starts with his "I EAT ****" battle cry, he's tanky enough that you really don't have to worry about him and cast spells at a distance. The few times the boss decides to look at me, he immediately redraws aggro on himself by just giant dad greatsword swinging his way through the boss, if he's too far away to hit the boss and redraw aggro he goes for the wraiths which will divert the boss's attention to him.
I seriously got him just because I thought it would be funny to have the poo poo man as a summon only to be blown away at how useful he is. Even Malenia got ganked by him greatsword spamming and me casting spells. Legit had her stuck in a corner and in a near constant stun lock for phase 1.

Has anyone noticed a reduction in the damage their go-to spirit summons are doing after the latest update? I'm especially interested in Lhutel and Oleg. There's nothing about spirit ashes getting nerfed on the wiki page for the patch notes, and I can't say for sure myself because I didn't get Oleg from the fringefolk grave dungeon until after 1.05. But if you read the comments on Oleg's wiki page you get the impression that he is a monster summons with some claiming he carried them through this or that boss fight, but when I summoned him at blood-filled lake near Mohgwyn's palace he was upgraded to +6 and his damage for a single hit was between 70 to 90 first time I summoned him and never went over 110 the second time.
I only started to think they had been nerfed to some extent when I summoned Lhutel also +6 in the same place. She did more damage than Oleg but not by very much and it was exactly the same when I summoned one after the other at impassable greatbridge and saw the same sort of damage from them there as well, neither hit for more than 130 and it doesn't seem right. I was using Lhutel to speed up the rune farm much earlier upgraded to +2 and +3 she wasn't having any trouble killing the Radahn soldiers or the mounted knight. Can anyone confirm this or is it my imagination and damage in the low hundreds is what those two elite summons have always done? I'm asking because I can do much more damage myself with incantations for the FP cost of summoning those two.

Greatshield Soldiers are my instant squad. They think I'm super funny, and they all like my music recommendations. They ask me for dating advice and never talk behind my back. Greatshield Soldiers are always there to hype me up, and support me at any contest or competitions I enter. I credit Greatshield Soldiers, at least in part, for making me the person I am.

Taking the idea from finger maiden Therolina, I tested this out: You can heal your summons, at least with Lord's Heal. I tried it on banished knight Engvall, the greatshielder ashes, and the demi humans. Not that it would be a huge fight priority most of the time, but it's good to know.

Which ashes deal primarily lightning damage? I know Kristoff and the Farum Azula beasts do some. Are there any others?

Blaidd spirit ashe just because it would be ****ing sick to have essentially Guts fighting at your side
The bit about the Caelid Colosseum being the only colosseum to allow spirit ashes is misleading. Unlocking the one in Caelid unlocks the use of spirit ashes in all other colosseums.
