Upgrade Materials, or Bolster Materials, in Elden Ring are responsible for strengthening Weapons, Shields, and Sacred Flasks with crucial Upgrades. This page covers their names and effects. An exhaustive list of Locations for each can be found on their respective pages.
While all Upgrade Materials can be scavenged while exploring the Lands Between, certain Bell Bearings allow players to purchase an unlimited quantity of materials for weapon, shield, and spirit ash upgrades. Charts for these can be found below.

Alright im gonna say it whoever made +25 thing his mom is a ho! Stuck at +9(3) it takes so much time to upgrade Elden Ring is really another Cyberpunk accident for me.
Since they upped the maximum level of regular weapons to +25 from +10, they really oughta down the amounts of stones you need per level to 1/2/3 instead of 2/4/6. What were they even thinking, forcing you to get 97 rocks to upgrade a weapon to the max?

It's ridiculous how you can get twinked out in an hour tops with a special weapon. It makes regular weapons complete garbage in comparison until the endgame. Sad.

Not sure if this interests anyone, but I have a route that lets you get to +15 with only 1 boss fight (none if you take a bit more time).
1. Get any decent strike weapon. I usually go for the Morning Star in Weeping Peninsula (then you can cheese the giant dragon for easy levels if the mood takes you).
2. Ride to Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel picking up 1 (3) at Laskyar Ruins along the way, get another 8 (3)s in the tunnel, and kill the Crystalian for the bell to get (1)s and (2)s (Crystalians are easy with strike, one stagger and you can stun lock for the rest of the fight)
3. Ride to the Ruin-Strewn Precipice for 13 (4)s, 3 (3)s (for a total of 12), and 2 (5)s
4. Use the teleport in the Dragon-Burnt Ruins to get to Sellia Crystal Tunnel for 8 (5)s (just LEG IT through there), then head a little north to the dragons and find a breakable statue for another 3 (5)s (total of 13)
5. ???
6. Profit
I'm a monster who constantly deletes their save files and starts again, so I dunno about getting high than this atm lol

they really need to cut the amount of regular stones needed in HALF per tier. its stupid badly balanced currently. somber weapons can get to +9 without fighting any boss and to +10 by just beating godrick early game already.
meanwhile regulars are stuck at 20 until after morgott no matter how much you explore.
meanwhile you can even farm sombers all the way up to +7 infinitely before morgott already thanks to miyazakis handfetisch monsters.
who balanced that crap? make it 1 2 3 for regular upgrade levels. not 2 4 6. thats just silly compared to sombers ONE per tier.

Pro tip: Store your ancient and somber stones in your storage (can be accessed on any grace site) to prevent accidental +10 or +25.

alright first of all whose idea was that +25 weapon upgrade? second why materials are rare? dark souls 2 and 3 was the best.

For anyone wondering, you need 89,496 runes to upgrade a weapon to +24, adding the 129,600 to buy the stones thats 219,096 total

It'll cost you nearly half a million runes to buy all the upgrade materials you'd need for standard smithing stones.

Am I going insane or does it seem like Somber smithing stone weapons way easier to upgrade? Regular weapons need 2/4/6 materials per tier. somber upgrade weapons need only one. I had a far easier time upgrading somber weapons because I had like up to somber stone (9) (equivalent to like a +24 weapon) while I was still struggling to upgrade regular weapons beyond 15 because I couldn't find 6, 7, or 8 smithing stones for the life of me.

what happened to all the creative names, shard, chunk slab etc, everything seems like a placeholder name that was never replaced
- Anonymous
This is sorely missing the amount of materials needed to upgrade to the next level. For regular upgrades it seems to be 2/4/6 (10 in total) smithing stones to get to +3, then the pattern repeats with the next tier of stones. For special weapons, it looks like 1 somber smithing stone of matching level per tier, same for upgrading ashes with gloveworts.

Smithing Master Iji located by Road to Manor bonfire upon teleporting to Liurnia (go north) after cutscene via a portal located East in the South Raya lucaria gate area. (Sells unlimited somber smithing stone 1 and 2, and has (3) 3's, and (3) 4's. Might be of use :)
where did the bell bearing column go?
