Reinforce armaments up to +24

Smithing Stone [8] is an Upgrade Material in Elden RingSmithing Stone [8] is a rare composition of the common smithing stone that is mainly used to forge and strengthen greater equipment level. Upgrade Materials can be acquired through exploration, looting it from specified areas of a Location, dropped by a specific Enemy or Boss, given by an NPC, or sold by a Merchant.

Stone used to smith a variety of armaments. Found in a polar region, it is semi-vitrified.

Strengthens armaments up to +24.

Thought to have been used to hone the weapons of the champions of the War against the Giants at the birth of the Erdtree.

  • Consecrated Snowfield:
  • Yelough Anix Tunnel:
    • 8x can be found in here.
  • Lunar Estate Ruins:
    • 3x Found in a chest under an illusory floor on the eastern side. Attack the floor to reveal the path. [Map Link]
  • Moonlight Altar:
    • 3x Between Ringleader's Evergaol and Chelona's Rise on the western side of the plateau, there is a large open space with three gazebos by the cliffs. The smithing stones can be found in the central gazebo. [Map Link]

  • Miquella's Haligtree
  • Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree:
    • Found on a corpse on a balcony along the eastern walkway. You can reach this balcony by heading inside the building on the left and going up the stairs. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse under a tree at the bottom level in the north of the city. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse in between two ballistae in the northern section of the city. [Map Link]
  • Crumbling Farum Azula:
    • Found on a corpse sitting at the end of the walkway that you begin on when first visiting the region. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse along the curved bridge/platform in the southwest. Before reaching it, a Farum Azula Dragon will swoop in and attack. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse under a roofed section on the left as you reach the end of the curved platform in the southwest. Directly opposite the Crumbling Beast Grave Depths site of grace. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse sitting at the edge of the broken bridge atop the arch ruins in the southern cliffs, guarded by a Lesser Wormface. This area can be reached by taking the lift in the terrace southwest of the large building next to the Crumbling Beast Grave Depths site of grace and then navigating the slopes and pathways by the cliffs. There is a ladder that you can climb on the back side of the arch to get on top. [Map Link]
    • From the previous stone, continue on east towards a shallow pond infested by Lesser Wormfaces. The stone is found on a corpse on the eastern edge of this pond. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse at the edge of the large stone platform behind the large building next to the Crumbling Beast Grave Depths site of grace. To reach this platform, head into the terrace southwest of the building and take the lift to the cliffs below. Navigate the floating debris north of the lift. Beware as a Farum Azula Dragon will swoop in and ambush you from behind as you pick up the item. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse in front of a sleeping dragon, far south of the fountain plaza. This area is on the upper level after ascending the Dragon Temple Lift. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse at the edge of the cliffs southeast of the fountain plaza, past a gazebo and a tree. This is in an upper area accessed after ascending the Dragon Temple Lift northwest of the temple. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse hanging off a ledge in the upper crumbled segment west of the Dragon Temple. To get up here, you will first need to ascend the Dragon Temple Lift northwest of the temple and then head south from the fountain plaza until you reach the Phantom Tree surrounded by pillars. From here, head west and use the top of another group of pillars to make your way to the start of the upper crumbled section. You will need to traverse the massive floating chunks of debris, heading further west. Once you get to the second large chunk, look in the northwest section of it for a series of makeshift stone bridges that will lead you to a gazebo-like structure. Head slightly north from the gazebo to find a corpse holding a Somber Smithing Stone [8] and then drop off the edge onto a small floating platform below to pick up the Smithing Stone [8]. [Map Link]
    • Found on a corpse on a floating section of the plaza with the fallen dragon statue, near the Dragon Temple Rooftop site of grace. [Map Link]

It is possible to have a +25 normal weapon before Fire Giant (and not going to Ephael). You need to almost complete Ranni's quest (3 stones+8 at Lunar Ruins, 3 stones +8 at Moonlight Altar), need to go to Mohgwyn Palace (4 stones +8 around the area), go to Caelid (1 stone +8 near Church of Plague) and Subterranean shunning grounds (1 stone +8). There's an ancient dragon smithing stone at Consacrated Snowfields, inside a skull with crows.

      • Anonymous

There's a fourth one in Moghwyn Palace, but I've forgotten where exactly. Somewhere in the swamp area definitely, in one of the small caves iirc.

        • I tried to add a map link showing an extra stone not shown in the Mohgwyn Mausoleum section, but the link wouldn't work in the edit preview. Here it is anyways: https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Interactive+Map?id=4811&code=mapB

Have to fight all the way to concerated snowfiled but none of my normal weapon go pass +22 while I have 3 +9 somber weapons way before that.

            • Anonymous

Either or both 27 Dec and 26 Sept are right because I got 12 to get one weapon to 24 before going to Haligtree or Farum Azula (but did clear Mohgwyn)

              • Anonymous

Fextra. Seriosuly. It's been a long time. There is a fourth in Moghwyn Palace in the Blood Lake full of Albinaurics. It was not in the small caves.

                • Anonymous

There is one in the inner consecrated snow fields
From the site of grace head north until you find a candle tree, then activate it and follow the ghost until he walks off a clif
On your left is a pile of stone tablets, climb it until you get to the giant tombstone at the top, the smithing stone is in front of the tombstone.
I feel like this has to be a place holder for DLC content,

The one in the shunning grounds, the one in caled, 6 in the alter, and the 4 in mohg palace makes 12 and margit or morgott is not required. you can also kill gurunq or do sellens quest and side with jerren for an ancient dargon.the 7s and 6s can be obtained through tedius paths and falling star beasts and the 5s are easy. 1s to 4s are easy since you can get the bell bearing without killing margit/morgott. Happy breaking margit! crap i am not ymfah

Don't farm in Halligtree for these. Drop rate is ridiculously low. Like 3 drops in 3 hours farming with 250 discovery. Totally bonkers.

                      • Anonymous

There are four total in the Mohgwyn Palace area. x3 mention on this list and one missing from this list in the Palace approach area, lake of blood with the trees and the red frog dudes. Specifically near a tree where the path turns out into to area with those fuking giant birds.

                        • Anonymous

The list here is missing the one nestled against a tree in the blood lake in Mohgwyn Palace patrolled by all the red albinaurics (the area with the blood tax AoW). Given this list and that missing one is how you get 12 before margit, if getting OP early is your thing.

I could swear I upgraded my gugs to +24 on my first playthrough before even entering farum azula, snowfield, mohgs area and shunning grounds is this list incomplete or did the fire giant smash my head too many times?

                            • Despite what some comments say, the 1% drop rate for Yelough Anix Tunnel is totally accurate. With 194 item discovery I had to kill about 520 miners to get 10 Smithing Stone[8]. Pretty much exactly what you'd expect for a 1% drop almost doubled by the discovery stat. (also on the way I got about 20 [7] stones, about 35 [6] stones, 60 or 70 Gravel Stones, and 20 pickaxes. and a million runes.)

It seems that with latest patch u actually can upgrade ur tool before Snow Area. IF u picked it in Caelid/Moonlight Altar/Subterranean Shunning Grounds and Four More in Moghwyn Dynasty Mausaleum. I have perfectly x6 stones(8) for +24 and Legendary Stone after Nepheli quest

                                • Anonymous

Whoever said that you can get +25 before Morgott is blatantly incorrect. I've just scoured the entirety of Moghwyn Palace + swamp, every nook and cranny multiple times and there's only the 3 smithing stones 8 in the cave. Please don't spread misinformation on the wiki.

                                  • Anonymous

Even if you perfectly explored every area in the entire game you're stuck to getting two +24s. And that's a big if, since for a casual player even getting one +24 before Farum might be considered good. By contrast you can get 13 regular slabs, and almost all are available before Farum. This severely hampers player experimentation whereas if you're running Somber weapons you might easily have 5 or more weapons you're keeping up to date. There should be more regular smithing stones prior to the vendor for sure. Idk if any From game has been more stingy about upgrade drops, which is a real shame in their game with the longest first NG cycle and an early available respec.

I have some annoying thoughts about smithing stones in Elden Ring, and about a player’s ability to upgrade their weapons in the early-midgame. Running through my map, I count ten mines in the Lands between: Limgrave Tunnels, Morne Tunnel, Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel, Gael Tunnel, Ruin-Strewn Precipice, Sellia Crystal Tunnel, Altus Tunnel, Old Altus Tunnel, Sealed Tunnel, and Yelough Anix Tunnel. Of these ten, the vast majority — the first nine — are in the early to mid game. This makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is the distribution of regular smithing stones. (Somber stones are their own problem in this game.) The distribution looks like this, in order: two mines have smithing stone 1’s, one has smithing stone 3’s, two have smithing stone 4’s, four have smithing stone 5’s, and one has smithing stone 8’s. I hope I don’t need to point out how lopsided this is. For one, no mines contain a reasonable quantity of smithing stones 2, 6, or 7. Smithing stone 5’s are very over-represented, especially in Altus Plateau where all the mines there are filled with 5’s. And to top that off, once you make it to the Mountaintops and the Consecrated Snowfield, there are practically no more mines left to search for upgrade materials. I think anyone can testify that finding all the smithing stone 6’s they need to upgrade multiple weapons before Morgott is a huge pain in the ass. And forget about upgrading more than one weapon to +21 before Godskin Duo. There is absolutely no reason for there to be so few mines in the late game, nor for the mines in the early game to over-represent 5’s at the expense of 2’s and 3’s. This could be easily fixed by literally just changing what kinds of smithing stones appear in which mines. Fill Morne Tunnel with 2’s, Sealed Tunnel/Altus Tunnel with 6’s, and slap a mine with 7’s into Mountaintops and now you have a mine for each stone! Problem solved.

One of the Consecrated Snowfields locations is plain wrong!! The breakable statue near Forlorn Cave does NOT contain 3x Smithing Stone 8, but 3x Smithing Stone 7!! Is it that hard to get the facts straight on this bloody site for gods sake???

                                        • Anonymous

Idk why they did this system like this, I feel like I could upgrade nearly every somber smithing stone weapon to +10 with ease, but anything requiring regular smithing stone just takes way too long.

theres 3 of these in mohgs dynasty mausleum, in the dark cave area with the bloody helice guys
past the merchant and on the left of the lords rune

Can be farmed with very low chance (even with Silver Scarab) from Haligtree Soldiers. From Prayer Room site of grace run forward and farm 9 soldiers, then teleport back. Roughly from 30 soldiers you will get 1 Smithing Stone (8).

                                              • Anonymous

Miners in Yelough Anix tunnel DO NOT drop Smithing Stone (8), or the chance is so low, that it's not worth wasting time farming. Miners only dropped Smithing Stone (6), (7) and Pickaxes with Silver Scarab and chicken feet.

                                                • Anonymous

They should decrease the regular smithing stone prices again if you want get another weapon to + 25 you need to farm enemies for runes or stones which is just tedious . You need 43,200 to buy just 12 of these since you probably will need to buy lower versions as well it would easily take over to 100 k . At least rune farming spot in Moghwyn palace is good

                                                  • Anonymous

If u want you can have a +25 weapon before Morgott:
                                                    1 found in caelid
1 found in the shunnig grounds
4 in the mohgwyn area (1 in the swamp + 3 in the family cave)
6 in the lunar altar area (3+3 from the chests)
And for the ancient dragon stone, ypu can get it from Guldranqq if you kill him
Or just wait afrer Morgot if u done nepheli's quest

                                                    • Anonymous

If you reach endgame and haven't gotten the bearing from farum azula, explore the yelough anix mine and the mountaintops of the giants. They scatter 7 and 8s in these areas, which I assume is to encourage exploration. I do find it dumb you can get +9 somber (+24 equivalent) before the capital I believe. At least that only hurts you if you want to do coop/invasions.

                                                      • Anonymous

Absolutely moronic that you can get deep into endgame and still not find enough of these to upgrade a second weapon. Got dozens of weapons I'd love to try but can't. Thanks, FromSoft.

Can confirm, 3x Smithing stone 8 in Moghwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. Just past the Lord rune, at the end of the tunnel where the Second Blood dude appears

Rare drop from Haligtree Knights. Start from Prayer Room Grace and kill everything up until Elphael Inner Wall Grace and you may see Smithing Stone 6, 7, and 8 drop. Probably just as rare as from miners but a lot more fun to do. Decent runes too for the effort.

wish you could get good stones early by fighting powerful field enemies. take a secret shortcut, do whatever. something special for casual runs after you've cleared the game struggling the first time.

Are there any other farm locations for these? I have 3 and I've never been to the mountaintop of giants/snowfield, or farum azula. I know I got the caelid and subterranian-shunning grounds ones, but trying to figure out where my 3rd one came from.

                                                                • Anonymous

So, technically the one "west of Ordina" is west of Ordina, but it's pretty misleading as it sounds as if it's near Ordina. It would be better to say it's in the westernmost section of the map which happens to be at the same north/south level as Ordina.

                                                                  • Anonymous

A little Northeast of the Consecrated Snowfield site of Grace, there's a scarab hanging off the tree that drops a Smithing Stone 8.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I found the Smithing Stone [8] in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. This place is a mess and a maze, but I can try to give directions: Across from the chamber where the Underground Roadside grace is there is a door, which cannot be opened from this side. You should be able to find a video on how to open this door, but it would take too long to explain in this comment. Once you've opened the door, go through it and cross the wooden 'bridge' (don't go down the ladder), there will be a pipe on the right side that you can jump onto. Jump onto the pipe and follow it all the way to the top (there will be imps). Once at the top, jump off on the left side onto a platform. Once you land you will see another platform (with an imp on it), slightly higher than the one you just landed on, jump onto that platform and hug the right wall and enter the hallway on the right side. You will see a ladder on your left that you can kick, ignore it, look down and you will notice a pipe with an opening/hole in it. Jump onto the pipe and into the opening. Once inside the pipe, immediately go southwest, through a (broken) metal gate and immediately turn right, (there will be an FP beetle), then ignore the first left, the road will now turn left and then right, go through the gate and down the slope. On the bottom of the slope there will be a weak enemy around the right corner and the item you're looking for a Smithing Stone [8] will be on the left side, on the bottom of another (dead-end) slope. If you managed to follow this, congratulations you can upgrade your weapon to +24 before the Consecrated Snowfield / Farum Azula!

                                                                      • Anonymous

Kinda sad how you can get 3 weapons using somber stones to +9 before you get to Leyndell but you can't even get 1 to +24 unless maybe if you wrong warp to Farum Azula. I know you don't really need a weapon upgraded that high at that point but if we include everything except Farum Azula, you can only upgrade 2 weapons to +24 compared to 11 somber weapons at +9.

Idk, maybe they should reduce the number needed per upgrade level by a bit or increase the amount we get in the later areas.

                                                                        • Anonymous

This is in a breakable statue that can be busted by the big bear sleeping nearby. 3x +7 Smithing Stones can be found with this.

Its in the ravine in consecrated snowfields between the minor erdtree and albinauric rise. Also I found at least 4 all around the secret haligtree place, but no idea where they were.
