best way to grind these is to invade (preferably in limgrave as that's where the more skilless hosts beg those with even less self respect to trade weapons), wait until you see the orange light of an item on the ground, interrupt the host/phantom as fast as you can before they can pick it up and either sever out or stand your ground and take them out, managed to get 2 maxed magma wyrm swords, a zamor cs and a grafted blade gs + more from this method and to the few who'll most likely get mad at this guide i only say this: dupe some more for us reds, thanks!

There's only 493,029 of these in one playthrough? Bad game design, how will I upgrade my Ooga Booga's Greatbonker Club now?

        • Anonymous

Why couldn't they make these farmable or being able to be bought? Heck, make it some obscure thing like in Bloodborne where you can buy Infinite but need 60 Insight for one. Idk man, i'm just throwing out ideas.

          • Anonymous

Somehow, Dark Souls 2 did it better. Really, Dark Souls 2 did a lot of things better, but the things it did worse completely sour any positive changes it made.

for those wanting maxed weapons, go to r/patchesemporium and trade for them. usually goes pretty quick and easy for me

              • Anonymous

the second one listed in jagged peak (the one surrounded by 3 slimes) is actually a somber ancient! not a normal ancient

                • Anonymous

Biggest misstep in the DLC is not giving a bell bearing to allow infinite purchasing of these and the somber version.

                  • Anonymous

So I was using str build for dlc and totally wasted spare ancient dragon stones on upgrading useless weapons and shields before finding beast claws, sword lance, Freyja's greatsword, dueling shield, milady (not str weapon but I still wanted to try it out) etc. I believed until the very end that there would be bell bearings for dragon slabs. Shouldn't have upgraded anything until finishing dlc, now I feel like total idiot. Well, ng+ it is

                    • Anonymous

So they added 8 normal stones and 4 somber ones in dlc. It's nice, but I really hoped they will add bell bearing for them or at least make them farmable...

isnt there one in a chest in front of 10 ish albinaurics and assassin just before the lift to mogh, in moghwyn palace?

                        • Anonymous

Fun fact, you can get all of these stones before going to Ashen Capital (kinda obvious I know). But you can't get all Sombers unless you kill Maliketh and go to Ashen for the last one.

                          • Anonymous

Love getting stuck with a dozen of weapons for PvP because I don't want to NG+ my characters before the DLC is released. Sure there are two types of stones for a total of 21. But it doesn't help much because str or dex builds don't have a lot of somber options (and they are usually worse than infusable ones), while hybrid builds almost exlusively use somber weapons

Tbh, It's kinda stupid that in bloodborne you can get all your stuff to plus 10 eventually, even if it'll take forever, you can farm the recorces needed to get the last upgrade, yet, in elden ring, there's no chance other than New-gaming forever
They should just make it so you can buy them from the twin maddens after you defeat placidusax, or the elden beast! Just make them 100,000 runes or something a piece

You either get yourself a +9 L2 spam blood knife, the edgelord's curved sword and the swish swoosh L2 spam magic katana before you even reach the capital or suffer through collecting each and every single smiting stone and doing Nepheli's quest, which no one cares about, so you can update your subpar regular ass GS/straight sword. Your choice.

I may be taking crazy pills, but from the location list I only count 12, and it states 13 can be looted, am i losing my mind?

"Found on a corpse on a floating platform north of the Dragon Temple, guarded by a Beastman" must have taken this one out, even watching the video and going to this spot, there isn't even the corpse there that you take it from.

With all the Rivers of Blood abusers, I wonder how many players missed out on the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in the skull, near The Church of Repose?

Well me personally can only ever find 4 per playthrough so this article is wrong, incorrect, fake.

                                        Just kidding lol

Under the "Locations" subheading, under the "Crumbling Farum Azula" bullet point, under location number 2, it should say that the closest site of grace is technically the "Dragon Temple Rooftop" if you've unlocked it to reach Alexander using stonesword keys. Head down the lift, walk through the doorway on the right, head right, kill the first beastman, head up the broken pillar, kill the dog and the beastman, and pick it up. Easy as pie.

i dont know why everyone is complaining about. In endgame you can buy every smithing stones and smober smithing stones (beside the last one) if you get the bell bearings. It's possible to get all the weapons to +24 or +9 if you have the patience. To be honest you dont really NEED the last upgrade, only if you min-max. And to be honest, to be able to get 21 of the 308 weapons maxed out in one playtrough is more than enough

                                            • Anonymous

Not only regular smithing stones are an absolute nightmare to get, but you have 4 of the slabs locked behind convoluted questlines... This has to be the worst upgrade system of any souls game so far.

                                              • Anonymous

In ds3 i complained about limited slabs and i'll proceed to complain here about the limited ancient dragon stones here, because i'd rather fight godfrey + 2 lord's apparition at the same time than going through a whole world of ng+ just so i can upgrade the weapon my build needed but wasn't available till the very end, like the beastman cleaver. However, it isn't nearly as much of a problem here because weapons go up to +24 and that's enough for 90% of the situations. In ds3 you were stuck to +9 and it was kind of lame.

                                                • Anonymous

Patches absolutely should be selling one (or a somber variant) at the end of his questline, even if at a price of 100k runes

                                                  • Anonymous

Here's an idea: Starting NG+ a small altar is added near Gransax's body in Ashen Leyndell. At this altar you can exchange... something for ancient dragon stones. Rune arcs or something else rare/valuable but farmable. Maybe at a rate of 25 arcs per ancient stone, or 40 for a somber. Plus it adds something new to a NG+ which is why DS2 best

                                                    • Anonymous

Argh, was drunk and upgraded hookclaws to +25 by mistake. Annoying, when I only have 3 left .. They should make more available, because its far to tedious when Im on NW+ and begin to try to get them all again...

                                                      • Anonymous

These are a bit of a luxury considering how small the upgrade from +24 to +25 is. The limit on somber ancient stones is a lot harsher since unique weapons benefit a lot more from the last upgrade.

                                                        • Anonymous

Anyone knows why everytime i upgrade my second weapon to +25, the game start to drop FPS from 60 to 1 or 2 FPS ?

                                                          • Anonymous

So is the dragon stone on the walkway where the first putrid avatar is and on you right as you exit the prayer room a somber stone?

                                                            • Anonymous

I don't agree with everyone who are saying the dragon, and somber dragon stones should be unlocked to buy from the maiden husks to buy in the NG+ playthroughs. I don't see why anyone would need to max out every weapon. Maybe having the option to trade a remembrance for one would be reasonable middle ground though.

                                                              • Anonymous

The Dragon Temple stone description need updating. It cost me an hour of searching from the original Dragon Tower grace. Instead, start at the Dragon Temple LIFT grace. Go down the elevator, get off, ignoring the enemy ahead and turn down the right corridor, then right again. Kill the enemy. You'll see a pillar leaning out toward the platform where the stone is. Go across the platform to the next one. Beware the beastman and dog. The stone is on your left. Bam, there you go.

                                                                • Anonymous

Using these should change the appearance of your weapon when upgraded for a more legendary look. I mean, these are limited in quality, plus the stones themselves give glowing shiny effect. Upgrading to +25 or even +10 doesn't feel that special since it's like just another upgrade.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Even though in the overworld, there are less no.8 smithing stones, but you can buy them from the twin maiden husks after beating the God-Skin Duo and giving them the bell bearing. But you cannot do the same for the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones.

                                                                    • Anonymous

There are a lot more of these than I was expecting. I only need three but like another comment has already said, it's the no.8 stones that are the problem. It doesn't make sense for there to be more ancient dragon stones available than the no.8 stones.

                                                                      • Anonymous

They could have went the route of after you beat Horah Loux or even the last boss they would become available for purchase. Or have them available for trade with Rune Arcs or starlight shards.

                                                                        • Anonymous

There has to be 14. I started collecting all of them and stopped once I realized I had 13 in total – 10 in inventory, 1 in my Uchigatana, and 2 I locked myself out of (Jerren and Garranq, who I killed by accident when he went berserk). Imagine my surprise when I started farming the Beastman's Cleaver, only to find I hadn't collected that one in Farum Azula. So now I'm sitting on 11 in inventory, with another 3 accounted for, as explained before. Couldn't say where I got the extra one, but it *is* at least 14 in total.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Makes no sense how it's possible to get 10 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones before Farum Azula, but even if you find every Smithing Stone (8) on the entire map you can't upgrade more than 2 weapons to +24 until you beat the Godskin Duo there

                                                                            • Anonymous

I found 10 before Farum Azula, and I sided with Sellen instead of Jerren. Maybe I found a 14th? (No idea where it could've come fom) Maybe Sellen also gives one in newer releases?

                                                                              • Anonymous

In Farum Azula, I'm not quite sure, considering there is one found by a dragon, but I believe I had one of those dragons drop one of these. I know the dragons drop gravel stones. But it may be something to look into. I DO know a Gold Aura item was on one of those Dragons, it was one of these stones.

                                                                                • Anonymous

really wish we could have a few more somber ancient dragon smithing stones in lieu of these. I mean how many weapons can you realistically get to +24 in a single playthrough without grinding? I'd guess 3 at most, considering you need 12 of each level smithing stone. Meanwhile you can easily get like 10 of each level somber smithing stone, and you only need one of each per weapon.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I'm sitting at 11 and I sided with Sellen. I thought I should have 12. Have the two from Nepheli's quest. And I re-checked all of the other locations and no Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are on the corpses. Only thing I can think of is the Night's Cavalry duo bosses didn't drop one. Or one of the pick-ups didn't register. Oh well.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

he can be attacked at any time and upon defeat will drop the beast eye and an ancient dragon smithing stone.
just did it myself while only having defeated Godrick

                                                                                      • Anonymous

In the consecrated snowfield, there is a noble stuck waist-deep in the snow, being dug out by two of his friends.

I'm fond of this weapon for a couple of reasons. It sucks that it doesn't have thrusting attacks like the claymore but it has:

                                                                                          1. Intrinsic bleed, so Occult is bae
                                                                                          2. For some reason you can mix and match certain weapon arts that aren't possible on most greatswords. You can do thrusting weapon arts like repeating thrust, or you can do katana weapon arts like doubleslash. It gives it an edge in pvp by being unique with what you can add to it.

                                                                                          Great dueling greatsword.

                                                                                                    • There's another one that's not listed here. After you finish the Storm Wybern Merdith fight, jump down the platform to the overhanging branch, east onto the pillar and jump down from there onto a floating platform. Follow the path and take your first left. It's just behind the chest which gives you a Pustulent Bolus.

                                                                                                        • Maybe I'm mistaken, but between these and the somber ones you can max level up to 20 different weapons. I feel that previous souls games were way less generous with those. I remember only having like 1 or 2 slabs each playthrough for Holy or lightning infusions in ds1. And then you had to farm shards for hours.

You don't have to beat the boss, you can run past it to the right and then up the parts of the cave jutting out to get to the corpse holding the stone.
