Serpent Flail is a Flail in Elden Ring. It was added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Serpent Flail scales primarily with StrengthDexterity, and Faith and is a good Weapon for dealing highs amounts of Fire Damage for a cheap cost and for Faith builds.

A flail with coiled snakes for bludgeoning heads.
Fire roars within the snakes' bodies, inflicting horrible burns.

Some of Messmer's army used these flails to burn hornsent—to brand them with agony and fear.

Where to Find Serpent Flail in Elden Ring

The Serpent Flail weapon can be found at the following location:

  • Fog Rift Fort: Head down using the ladder past the first tower, and defeat the enemies. Beware of the flamethrowers. Use spells or arrows if you have them. Reach the end of the area to find a chest that contains this item. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map] [Video Link]

I know its supposedly a callback to the boom hammer, but that just feels like an insult to the boom hammer

I don’t usually comment on things here, but.. Serpent Flail of all the weapons, from the famous to the hated was never something I really fell in love. But somehow, this fiery, tangled weapon with its two swinging balls has won me over. For me, it's the simplicity of the moveset, elevated by the Ashe of War, that turns it into an unstoppable force. The sheer power of the booms hit so hard, it’s almost exhilarating.

Use this with the stormhawk deenh spirit.

The spirit buffs you when summoned and again randomly during combat.

The buff grants you 20% more physical damage and stance damage.

This allows the 2 handed exploding jump attack to do 40 stance damage.

Most bosses have stance in the multiples of 40, with 80 being very common.

2 jumping attacks for morgott, 2 for malenia, 2 for draconic sentinel etc.

This is incredibly good at stance breaking compared to slower larger weapons.

Of course the main reason to use this is for fun explosions, but this is a great bonus.

I just wish they'd buff the speed of charged heavy attacks or make them do far more damage to set flails apart from other weapons and be more than just inferior hammers.

          • "Ash of war that adds a fixed passive buff that is only useful at low levels"

On a high-requirements weapon of an underwhelming class. I guess "Flare, o Serpent" sounds cute and badass, but that is kind of it. Before you start OoH bUt ItGoEs BoOm they could have made it on every strong attack for the duration, now it is lame

Calling this thing the new Boom Hammer is an insult to the Boom Hammer. Comparing this piece of absolute trash to the glory of the Boom Hammer is like comparing a chihuahua to a wolf. The flail only explodes if it hits the ground while the hammer explodes on EVERY swing. Plus the hammer can attack whilst igniting while the flail can't and the hammer has a good moveset in BB while ER flails have the worst one in the entire game. This flail is awful and it feels like we are being mocked, they could have made a true Boom Hammer successor and instead we got literal hot garbage. Bring back actual trick weapons.

Wish they modify how damaged is dealt on the explosion attacks. At the moment it's 2 instances of damage, phys+fire from the weapon impact and fire from the explosion. In it's current form only the fire damage from the impact benefits from oil pots as it's the next instance of fire damage.

If they changed it to only physical damage from weapon impact and a buffed fire damage from explosion, the explosion would benefit from oil. Obviously adjust the explosion damage by adding the fire attack rating at 50 faith onto the explosion part to match damage in current state.

This change would make it so oil, Alex shard, and fire knight helm all contribute more damage to the skill.

Underrated as hell weapon for both PvE and PvP. Super low FP cost for the weapon art and gives a tiny passive buff until you proc the explosion which can be procced by a roll attack that will rollcatch most people.
I'm not sure which talismans buff the AoW tho because it has a weird interaction, i'll do some testing later

                  • Anonymous

God I wish the explosion would go off on guard counters and the final R1 in an attack chain. Imagine hit, hit, hit, BOOM! The FP cost is low enough that I wouldn't mind buffing again just to get the 4th final hit to explode every time. If I wanted the 95 bonus fire damage on 247 I'd just use flaming strike.

This weapon paired with FP regen talisman is chefs kiss. 16 seconds to cast the buff again or 8 seconds when used at low FP.

I hope to God they buff the charged r2 attack speed to be on par with hammers, you can get 1.5 charged hammer r2s in the time it takes 1 charged flail r2.

Honestly surprised we got a DLC Flail. I thought FromSoft forgot they existed like 90% of the way through development of the base game considering Spinning Chain just... DOESNT have an Ash of War to collect lol

this and nightrider flail on flame art against the scadutree avatar was a blast, so much down time to l2 then jump attack, was on 0 scadutree so it was still hard near 80 tries i would say, so much fun i recommend.

Serpent winged helm, 10% jump attack boost from chest (Raptors or Gravebirds), Alexander Shard, Fire Scorpion Charm, Claw Talisman, Fire cracked tear, Oil Soaked Tear, Golden Vow, Flame, Grant me Strength and two of these explodey bad boyes. Deliver devastating damage for the cheap price of 16 FP (8 per flail) per jump attack.

I've never felt so conflicted with a weapon before. The moveset sucks, but the aow is so simple yet effective. I guess if it was on a hammer it would have been too good

                            • Anonymous

I have never really liked using flails in ER, they seemed to just have an incredibly poor moveset, ash of war flexibility, and just all around more difficult to use than just a regular hammer. This weapon has got me acting unwise and considering to actually build around it and try a flail again, seems like a fun weapon.

At 80/80 dex and faith, with the fire knight chest, winged serpent helm, fire scorpion talisman, alexander jar shard, and claw talisman, a jumping L1 with two Serpent Flails will, provided it lands square, hit for about 8.2k. Consider for a moment that Messmer is 20% resistant to strike, and 40% resistant to fire. Yeah.

                                • Anonymous

I have tested this thing and even posted a video on yt fighting Romina with it. The 2H talisman, with fire scorpion charm, and the fire + oil tears with 64 dex and 52 faith and a +9 flail, and only scadutree lvl9 were doing great amount of damage (2.5k uncharged heavy).

Could have been even better if I used golden vow, flame grant me str for more damage, but they weren't even needed.

The shard of alexander and messmer/winged serpent helm, didn't use either because it only affects the aoe of the explosion, not the hit itself.

The only thing I dislike about this weapon is that the charged heavy takes 90000 years to come out so you're just better using it uncharged with the fire explosion because even the bosses have time to run away from it.

All in all, great flail, actually surprised how nice it works and who doesn't love a weapon that goes boooom!

                                  • Anonymous

The Ash of War explosion deals 7 additional PvE poise damage.
Therefore it turns a regular 2h Flail's jumping R2's 26.4 to a combined 33.4 with this ash active. Which helps it go over a very important breakpoint since most elites/bosses have 30 / 65 / 100 poise, meaning this flail can poise break a lot of enemies with one less jump attack!

-Only costs 8fp while Royal Knights Resolve costs 15. Pairs well with fp regen talisman.
-Skill adds +90 fire damage for 25 seconds or until you use the explosion
-Explosion occurs on Heavy attack, Charged heavy attack, Running heavy attack, and Rolling light attack (all 1h or 2h)
-Explosion attacks deal around 11-15.8% more damage with weapon contact + fire aoe of unknown calculations
-All explosion attacks deal similar damage, except charged heavy attacks which deal more aoe damage depending on proximity
-Charged attack talisman ONLY boosts damage of weapon contact, not aoe.
-Alexander shard ONLY boosts the aoe damage, not the strike from the weapon, so is only around 6% more damage total
-Winged serpent helm ONLY boosts the aoe damage, not the strike from the weapon, so is only around 4% more damage total
-Fire boosting items work better than normal flame/fire weapons as they boost fire aoe AND fire damage from striking with the weapon.
-Aoe damage is ONLY boosted by faith. Dex still boosts damage on contact with weapon as ar increases.
-Oil items are negatively affected compared to RKR fire weapons, as only the weapon gets the bonus fire damage, not both. Only 17% more damage from oil pot vs 25% on normal 50/50 split flame art flail with royal knights resolve
-The skill is basically a combination of the flaming weapon skill that gives +90 fire damage buff and a royal knights resolve based around the explosion attacks.
-fromsoft please add sleep perfume i beg you
-Have not tested the 2 hand talisman or the charge attack physic, but I'm assuming they only boost the damage of the weapon strike, not the aoe.

Overall, the Explosions are fun and the damage is high. It is better than any flail infused with fire/flame and royal knights resolve for the purpose of big damage and normal attacks. Half the fp cost too. I have not tested stacking all fire/physical damage gear, so numbers can get so much high. Very good weapon in pve.

Charging a flail heavy attack feels like the 2 year wait for the dlc to drop. What im trying to say is its way too long and needs 2 swings charge up instead of 3.

Using two of these, with Golden Vow, Flame Grant Me Strength, Winged Serpent Helm, Shard of Alexander, Fire Scorpion Charm, Claw Talisman, and the Flame Cracked Tear, a jumping powerstanced attack with both ash buffs applied deals a little under 5000 damage on the omen outside Underground Roadside grace. I had 58 dex and 60 fth, AR is listed as 724 with no non-talisman buffs applied. Without incantation buffs, deals ~4000 damage give or take. Without physick buff, I got to deals around ~3500 damage (This one was the most inconsistent for me). With only one AoW buff applied, deals around ~2500 damage. No AoW applied at all deals around ~1500 damage. (Note: Since flails have a "sweet spot" for damage, damage numbers may vary depending on what part of the hitbox lands). They made a good flail :,)

Step 1: Get two of these
Step 2: Put on the claw talisman
Step 3: Use the ash of war on both at the same time
                                            Step 4: Jump
                                            Step 5: Profit

                                              Just tested it

                                              Boosted by:
                                              Winged serpent helm
                                              Messmer's helm
                                              Fire scorpion charm

                                              Not boosted by:
                                              Shard of alexander
                                              Godfreys Icon
                                              Talisman of the dread
Claw talisman (jumping attack explosion not boosted)
                                              Gravebird armour
Any talisman that boosts attack types (axe talisman ect)
                                              Fire knights armour

Maybe because it got updated but now, Shard of alexander didn't work, Winged serpent helm also didn't work, before and after equip these things it did 1702 damage on solder of godrick, nothing changed.

                                                • Anonymous

The skill is affected by Shard of Alexander and also the Winged Serpent Helm.

Not affected by Godfrey's Icon when using the buffed Charged Heavy, I guess only Darkmoon Greatsword get's that luxury.

Pretty decent skill when fully optimized, nothing crazy.

Works better on a Jump Attack build, since the Flail Charged Heavy takes 3 minutes to come out.

powerstance jumping attacks with two of these for double boom

also gets kinda crazy with fire scorp, claw talisman, alex shard and then the flame and oil tears

                                                    • Anonymous

Skill deals extra stance damage. I can stance break the omens in the sewers with 2 heavy jump attacks, or 2 light jump attacks with powerstance nightraider flail. With other flails it seems to take 3 heavy jump attacks. No idea what the actual values are and if it makes this weapon any good, but the fact that the explosion can trigger on jump attacks and not only r2s is nice I guess. Too bad it doesn't trigger on guard counters.

The explosion deals about 35-40% increased damage when triggered by a charged r2, compared to explosions from every other move.

Additionally, the explosion from a charged r2 knocks enemies away. Which is cool and all, sadly flails have the worst charged r2 in the game, so good luck landing it.

Other than that I really like the idea of this flail.
