Putrescence Cleaver is a Greataxe in Elden Ring. It is a brand new Greataxe in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Putrescence Cleaver scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Arcane and is a good Weapon for inflicting Frostbite.
Weapon wielded by the Putrescent Knight. A great cleaver of hardened putrescence affixed to an arch fashioned from human bones. Gains power from the wielder's arcane attribute.

Give it generous arcane and str, both stats are pumping physical dmg. Don’t know about the magic part, maybe arcane buffs it too, but it’s always going to be small number since it’s just 102. The base physical dmg can compete w other great axes, it’s really high. Loving the standard move set w 2 hand talisman and jump talisman + jump armor. Rest is defense and hp talisman. + knife that just gives golden vow, then back to axe.

Mann i really wished the frost bite build up scaled with arcane but the damage is pretty good atleast
- Anonymous
Why on earth doesn't this have the two handed chop R2 that Butchering Knife has?
- Anonymous
Instant pain in the spine while looking at ash of war. Its very cool weapon tho.
- Anonymous
AOW is very good against humanoid enemies without much armor, against large bosses it is practically useless, at least the freeze applies easier to enemies with a lot of health
- Anonymous
Don't be a fool like me and just spam the ash of war button until you run out of stamina. Combo it heavy attack to better proc frost and get more damage.

Aside from Borealis, I believe this is the only source of frostbite native to arcane.

AOW could have been the coolest team attack with Torrent but From won't let us dream
- Anonymous
Missed out on the heavy throwing the weapon like a boomerang how the boss does it
- Anonymous
The AOW not buffing this weapon with blue flame is huge missed opportunity

AoW (including the heavy followup) are NOT boosted by the two-handed sword, axe, or claw talismans. Shard of Alexander and other talismans that boost stats directly is the way to go.

Would've been nice if doing the spins coated the weapon in blue flame for a time to increase frost damage. Do something with the blue flame, anything, it looks so cool. They dropped the ball on so many things weapon-wise that's becoming more readily apparent as time goes on.

Tried this thing out in Invasions with a poorly optimized STR/ARC build (30/30 at 136). Honestly the damage isn't bad, and the AOW is really good at roll-catching/shredding. If I had optimized, it probably would have obliterated people.
- Anonymous
Anyone saying that you'll never proc frost has clearly never used the AoW
- Anonymous
Does anyone know which talismans work best on this? Shard of Alexander is a given but does this count as a charged skill for Godfrey's Icon? Does Millicents Prosthetic buff this?
- Anonymous
this slab of bones helped me kill the last boss. my favorite dlc weapon, even though its not very good. you will NEVER proc frost with this lol, and it deals less damage than the UGS that scales off the same stats, which has an infinitely better (but not cooler) ability attached to it

God, this thing goes so hard, and is peak aesthetic imo, but the frost buildup is atrocious. Both regular enemies, and bosses will die before I can inflict frost.

Pairs well with blaidd's set , and for the helm you can use the wolf mask or the blue cloth cowl .

It’s an arcane weapon I wish the frostbite would scale off of arcane instead of just being a flat 55

The dark horse of the DLC. With a dedicated build and a good understanding of its AoW, it will surprise you.

I believe this weapon is bugged in the DLC and is doing less damage than it should be in some cases. Testing on the Fire Knight on 7th Floor with Axe of Godrick at 697 AR (physical), a guard counter does about 1300 damage. With this weapon at 698 AR (physical) PLUS 133 magic, a guard counter does about 1100 damage. This doesn't make any sense to me, AND when I test on the basic soldiers outside the Church of Elleh, this correctly does more damage than the Axe of Godrick. So I theorized that something was wrong with the Scadutree scaling on this weapon. But then testing on the shades near the Scorched Ruins at the beginning, it correctly outscales the Axe of Godrick. So what could be happening here? It doesn't make sense that it should do less vs. the Fire Knight unless the magic damage portion is somehow healing the knight, or unless Axe of Godrick has a hidden buff vs. certain enemy types.

Causes frost buildup but doesn’t an int scaling for some reason?!
- Anonymous
really cool designed weapon but kinda weird is not hex weapon? also as goofy and cool the weapon art is i wish it left some ghostflame on the ground after every few spins.

Favourite dlc weapon. just wish when you running around with it that you hold it with 2 hands at either handle

The weapon has high AR for its class with a proper build, with the tradeoff being that its range is absolutely worst in class. You will often whiff with the weapon against mobile enemies where a longer weapon would catch them backing up. The frost effect is weak for the speed of this weapon class, although you might get it to proc once on tougher enemies for a little burst of damage. The Ash of War is excellent against one strong human-NPC opponent. Against groups of enemies or bosses that cannot be stunlocked, it is virtually useless. Overall, the main weakness of this weapon is that in fashion souls it visually clips into many pieces of armor, helmets, capes, and shields while fighting.

This weapon's AoW should count as a dance by Dancer's Set. I mean, just look at it. Just change the name to Guillotine Dance and give us the combo, Miyazaki.
The weapon art damage is insane. This might be the secret best weapon for real

Anyone know how to build this? Lvl 150 stat / talisman used?
- Anonymous
Slash damage. Are you actually kidding me from software. You drop the biggest banger and give it the worst damage type in the game. I was so ecstatic about it then I fought one dragon and immediately my heart was shattered.

this is the weapon I've been using while cooping after beating the dlc, its not the best, the range really hurts, and the ash of war feels useless in most situations in pve
I have noticed the ash of war do really well against invaders, might just be that im getting lucky and matched against people who dont have much poise, the ash of war follow ups are ok for roll catching too, people seem to panic roll a lot after even a single cast of the ash
899 damage with 50 str (40 base, I'm using the str cracked tear) 50 arcane on my 150 build (without scadutree fragments), I'm sure if i tuned the stats better to account for the two handing str boost itll probably stretch a bit more damage out with the same level cost
also looks pretty cool

Such a shame that such unique looking weapon has the same generic moveset as 90% of greataxes and doesn't have any blue flame attacks that Putrescent Knight uses
- Anonymous
Spam L2 and instantly win against any npc invader or player boss
Note: Does not work against actual players

Surprised this doesn’t get the heavy attack that the omen cleaver and butcher knife get.

I -really- want to like this weapon, but the ash doesn't have enough stun, the frost is so low for such a slow weapon that in practice it simply doesn't proc, the R2 attacks should be the sweeping arcs of Godfrey's axe but are the standard greataxe ones, if not it's own animation (maybe only cosmetic, but it really annoys me lol) and worst of all, there doesn't seem to be any new fashion options for arcane spells that would fit with it. It does hit like a truck with charged attacks though, reaching 2700 for me on a 150 build with just the axe talisman and charge attack physick

Any reason why the description specifically says : gains more power from the arcane attribute? Is it just the scaling, or a special thing?

- Anonymous
A bit bummed this didnt have the boomerang throw on R2, but with how monstrous the weapon already is I get it. The skill is an absolute blender.
- Anonymous
Random arcane scaling on a weapon that should be a curved greatsword? Plus the static 55 frost build up? PLUS a awful ash of war? Yeah hard pass.
- Anonymous
The Frost accumulation doesn't improve at all with weapon level...
- Anonymous
does the frost buildup scales with int in this weapon or is it static 55 no mater of stats?

Similar AR as the Meteoric Greatsword at 54 Str (80 when 2Handing) and 54 Arc.
Greatsword 963 at +10
Axe 917 at +10
This is lighter and faster, plus it has cold. But the sword has better reach and a more powerful AOW.
TLDR: Use both on a Str/Arc character :)

Another ruined opportunity, death spells scale with faith and int and yet all the weapons are just int and now arc? Sad times this should have been int/faith scaling

You can cancel the skills recovery animation by rolling out. This works and is most notable on the base initial skill cast, and also it's R2 followup. Unfortunately, does not work for the follow up L2 variant. Adds viability to the unique ash on this weapon.
