Dissapointed because it looks cool along with the armor. The ash of war looks cool and does a lot of damage but you can easily be stance broken out of it and it takes a long time to realise, for PvP it's easily dodgeable. The only realistic damage is done through the AoW, because the spear itself is just too slow and does abysmal damage.

Would have been better if it had a special charged like that of messmer or the ringed knight's.
Still would use this to beat furnace golems again 9/10

I like this thing, and I've posted a video on youtube about it. Try to avoid using the r2s as much as possible, they are legitimately bad and only good in very niche situations.
Use the weapon skill as your actual heavy attacks, it's your source of mixups and has very good recovery after the projectile or the 3 stabs. Avoid going for the full weapon art unless absolutely necessary, as while it does insane damage it has horrible openings and terrible endlag.
For those who wants to use the weapon
Despite Scaling B with Dex and C with Fth
I did some testings with 80Dex/45Fth and 45Dex/80Fth
And 45Dex/80Fth is only around 10 AR lower than the other
But the real thing is the AoW
Talismans I used for the damage test are
Shard of Alexander
Rotten Winged Sword Insignia
In 80Dex/45Fth Full Combo for AoW did something around 4900-5000 to sewer Omen
But in 45Dex/80Fth
Despite missing the 2nd part of the AoW where you stab the target 3 times and not procing Rotten Winged Sword Insignia because of that
Weapon still did more than 6K damage
So go for the Fth Route because you can use Incantaions better that way meanwhile AoW being way more deadly

Genuine question: Is the first part of the ash of war bugged? When I use the first stage and do the spin, it staggers enemies/destroys destructible objects but doesn't do any damage until the fire explosion right before stage 2. Really confused rn

Finally a worthy boss weapon. Not only is the ash insanely strong but you also get thrown R2s and fire explosion when charged. Eat your heart out, every single base game rememebrance weapon!

Did the throwable R2 attack get damage nerfed with 1.12.2? Was doing a lot more damage before updating to 1.12.2 especially the uncharged R2.

The damage and scaling are actually pretty mid. Wasted somber dragon stone because I thought it would be broken, but still fun weapon nonetheless

Not usable anymore... after calibration
Without buffs R2 from Horseback 2.5K with Charge before, after barely 1.5 K less than 2 seconds aoe and dubble stamina cost not worth to bring on +10
I regret it. It was so good even at ng +4 now it is for the trash. First they deny us the Black Hammer drop and now they destroy Our Funny stuff . Bad days for PS5 players.

Does anyone happen to know what parameter the Ash of War scales with? Is it weapon level, dex, or faith?

I'm a big fan of charged heavy attacks and I'm not exactly feeling this weapon's charged heavy, but otherwise it looks sweet and I'm having fun with it.
- Anonymous
it had the chance to be the coolest spear in the game but the moveset is bad I hope they change it to something like guardian swordspear.
- Anonymous
the ash of war on this weapon is stupidly strong in pvp, if you're caught in the initial hit you're stuck and will be hit by the next one, very annoying
- Anonymous
The ash of war is great! Very strong damage but also very stylish. I recommend using a fast off-hand weapon to compensate for its slow R1. Backhand blade seems to go very well with this.

Very mid weapon unluckily. Damage is kinda mid, and overall is your average great spear movesets, except for the launch heavy attacks that deals very low damage and consume an insane amount of stamina. The weapon art is very good, but realistically, when are you really gonna land it?
- Anonymous
the heavy attack is just terrible. it barely does any stance damage even when charged. U basically dont have a charged R2 and charged R2s are pretty much a necessity for most bosses in the game

Basic great spear moveset annoys me because of how slow it feels compared to the ash and stuff, but I guess I understand it from a balance perspective. Would've killed for it to have some flashier moves though, Messmer wields this thing so much better than we do.

Power stance this with the barbed staff spear dropped by Yori the Elder inquisitor and its pretty fun, you can also powerstance with Vykes spear and proc bleed and madness
- Anonymous
The Heavy attack consumes A LOT of stamina so be wary of using it recklessly.

It has occurred to me that this DLC is showing some love to Dex builds of various compositions. I take no issue with that, as any tarnished worth their salt has multiple characters with different builds.

I'm kinda upset with this weapon, with how fluid messmer used it I feel like it should have a moveset similar to the guardians sword spear instead of just generic great spear
For trash: great. Being struck out of the attack a problem on larger foes (~55 poise)
For bosses -
WA: good. But... It'll be cancelled by hits very easily.
Regular moveset: nothing to speak of.
The throw - insufficient damage vs a cast.
You lose a lot of control of your character with the WA, particularly the delay to fetch the spear after the third (ground spears, you're animation locked for about half a second as the spear rematerializes in your hand)
I'd contrast this with renallas two blades, which has a decent regular moveset, and does about the same damage on the r1 stance with way less exposure.
Additionally, the wa suffers cragblade's problem, if they move, it doesn't track, so your 2nd pierce splay can hit air.
I want it to work, but found myself switching back to death knight weapons for the blink.
Not much beats movement capability, and the halberd is a follow-up air hop. Quicker, and you don't get hit.
I'm using it at 37 dex, 64 faith, 14 str.

Okay. So the Axe Talisman DOES buff the throw. Tested on underground omen dummy.

Both 2 handed talisman and Smithing Talisman boosts 2H Charged RT. Godfrey icon doesn't work

I can't get over the fact that the ash of war has THREE attacks if you chain it. Is there any other ash of war like this??? I might just make a Messmer build because of this.
- Anonymous
Great weapon but I must say I noticed that the first two slashes in the ash of war don't do any damage the first appears to do nothing the second can do some poise damage but only the third and beyond part does acctual damage. Still great tho

Favorite AOW of the DLC, actually perfectly resembles his attacks down to the 3 stage move. Really fun weapon
- Anonymous
the Ash of War on this requires zero dex, i love this thing its awesome.
- Anonymous
amazing weapon art, most swagless normal attacks ever, people need to be more creative when it comes to spears
- Anonymous
Really wish it didn't have the base Great Spear R1's. It could have been the Elden Ring Dragonslayer Swordspear (Spear 1H, Halberd 2H)
- Anonymous
power stancing with vyke's is cool and if you put it on your main hand you still get the cool skill to use as well.
- Anonymous
Dex scaling doesn't appear to be working on my AR calculations
- Anonymous
This weapons weapon art is really beautiful, to be hoenst i thought it was just gonna be something underwhelming but im glad I was wrong... TWICE because i didnt know that the charged R2 throws it and makes a burning aoe for a seconds, great and fun weapon works well with Dex builds

Despite the C scaling, actually scales very well with faith
80 dex 35 faith: 750 AR (414 physical, 336 fire)
80 faith 35 dex: 731 AR (319 physical 411 fire)
Both options are great.
Higher physical damage and access to other dex weapons vs higher fire damage and much higher spell scaling. (353 with erdtree vs 239 with frenzied flame seal)
Personally, I’ll always choose the option that gives me godly spell power.

This + Shard of Alexander, Godskin Swaddling Cloth, and Rotten Winged Sword Insignia is a great build as the AOW counts as a successive attack. Also works with Dryleaf Arts which you can use with the spear since its so light.

for anyone wondering what you should use i have :Two-Headed Turtle Talisman ;Shard of Alexander; Fire Scorpion Charm and Rotten Winged Sword Insignia. You can replace the turtle talisman by milicent's prosthesis or the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman. Aim 80 dex and at least 50 faith. I also use the Rakshasa set (it increase damagen dealt and taken so i switch the turtle talisman for the dragoncrest if i get stuck on a boss too long).

This weapon made me change my str/faith bonk build to an dex/faith. This can range, this can bonk doing guard counters and this can combo. Yep, it's that good.

I wanted to love this, but god damn the great spear moveset is among the worst feeling ones in the game. The sluggish 3x pokes that look the same is not great. I wish they gave it a custom moveset based on Messmer's attacks or something.
This weapon art does ridiculous damage, I don't know how good the orb incantation is but damn i don't regret taking this one. It's like a joke

this has to be one the most versatile weapons ever, it’s just plain beautiful.

Throwing explosive spear as charged heavy attack, good reach, decent scaling for dex and faith fire build, sick weapon skill that goes full combo. Yep, I think that's everything ! AND I RATE THIS WEAPON 1000/10 !
- Anonymous
Does the weapon art stack with any of the successive attack talismans? ex: millicent prothesis, rotten-winged, etc.

I was kinda hoping it’d be a regular spear and not a great spear but ah well

Would this be a good weapon to use as a "shield-poke" strategy against the final boss in DLC?
