Axe of Godfrey is a Colossal Weapon in Elden Ring. The Axe of Godfrey scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for strong melee attacks.
Weapon of Godfrey, Elden Lord. It was broken in a battle fought as leader of the Tarnished during the Long March. This weapon is symbolic of Godfrey's vow to conduct himself as a lord, later becoming an emblem of the golden lineage. In the days of the past, a crown was warranted with strength.

One thing I would love to see, if we eventually get a DLC and it’s focused on the Badlands or some other story involving Hoarah Loux, would be the unbroken version of the Axe with better scaling
- Anonymous
Probably one fo the few colossals not completly devestated by aim punch. Still pretty bad, but it's fun using off meta weapons.
- Anonymous
I like this weapon. I really do. But it definitely feels underwhelming all things considered. Wish it had better scalings or more poise damage.
- Anonymous
I feel like this weapon i the ultimate trading machine. If they’re not light rolling and using fists, chances are just tapping the buffed r2 will give you free damage and basically is unstoppable because it comes out pretty quick too. Consider pairing with a long range strength weapon or incant like Siluria’s tree or stone of gurranq to keep the pressure.
- Anonymous
All the problems aside, I still find this axe to be very fun to use. No thoughts, just stomps. Therefore the only weapon I need.
- Anonymous
I know that the scaling is supposed to be canon but please make it A scaling in STR and ditch Dex.
- Anonymous
>requires 42 strength but scales quality, thank you Miyazaki. Thank you so much
- Anonymous
Does almost no poise dmg now, I can poise break a troll with 2 Claymore charged attacks, but even after 4 charged attacks with this Axe unbuffed or buffed with Regal Roar, still can't poise break.
- Anonymous
Think this is bugged now? Even after 4 charged attacks, I sill can't break a troll's poise, but I can do it in two with a Golem's Halberd.
Poise dmg with Axe is rly low now. Been through 3 boss fights (death rite bird etc.) and none of them ever got stance broken even though i hit them with plenty of charged and strong attacks tf...
- Anonymous
Its an off-hand power stance weapon, use it to buff yourself and to give you a situational aoe when fighting large groups in a pinch, youll tank all but the mightiest blows with enough poise and practically one-shot any small shits in your way, even in NG+ and beyond its an invaluable skill to have in your pocket where most aoe spells provide little to no bonus poise for you to pull the spell off.
also keep in mind, that power stancing a weapon means you get no strength bonus from 2-handing a singular weapon, and with this weapons low scaling theres little point in 2-handing it, best used power stancing while having an A-S scaling colossal in your other hand if you only plan on 2-handing a big boy when at or above 60 strength, or a colossal that benefits from quality and high strength like Duelists axe or golems halberd if you enjoy power stancing when at or below 50 strength and dex.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This axe is extraordinarily underwhelming considering the boss battle required to get it, the AoE should be massive especially with the crappy scaling it gets.
- Anonymous
yes i require 14 dexterity to slam this weapon into the ground really hard
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
After using the AOW your one handed heavies will also be replaced with the special heavies, meaning you can totally run something in the offhand while having the full advantage of this weapon's movset, for instance, a greatshield. imagine the potential.
- Anonymous
This weapon is SO annoying but I can't deny how good it is to catch a roll-happy opponent. Especially good against invaders to do major damage and lots of stun.
- Anonymous
actually decent post buff thanks to the AOW changes, scaling is still ****, but you can now become an unstop ogre for 40 seconds everytime you use the skill. First heavy is extremely good, follow-up one is funky at times but overall good damage and excellent trade potential.
Will use unironically.

Definitely a lot better and cooler post 1.07, but still isnt as strong damage and stance breaking wise as other builds. At 150 you’re just better at crowd control than say an optimal moonlight/moonveil/ most dual weapon builds
- Anonymous
Patch 1.07 also Fixed a bug where the effect of the Roar Medallion was not applied to the Regal Roar Ash of War.
- Anonymous
fun fact the roar increase medallion and axe works with this now, so the enhanced heavies can now deal like 25% more damage
The extension of the roar buff helps this weapon out a lot and chaining uncharged R2s under its effect is so very fast now.
- Anonymous
Roar talisman buffs the AOW now can stack with shard of alex too
- Anonymous
i got up to 54 str (80 2-hand) and then dump the rest into dex, then put the highland axe in the offhand and roar medallion on. regularly blowing people up for 1000 damage a swing
- Anonymous
Ok, this weapon is unironically good now. I was able to reach 888 AR while buffed at rl160. Deals great damage on charged heavies. Optimal to stack poise
- Anonymous
Eyy, we got 40 sec buff duration and faster heavies thanks to the new patch :D
- Anonymous
42 str
14 dex
Quality scaling
Miyazaki has a godly sense of humor

For what its worth, I chose Hoarah Loux's earthsaker from the remembrance and it does what it says on the tin. But you look like a complete and utter twat every time you use it. Powerful yes, but it's from Coco the clown's school of weapon arts.
- Anonymous
The Weapon Skill itself is really strong. The weapon? Decently high AR, but most non-colossal heavy weapons will have the same AR and swing twice as fast. Against any large enemy, you'll get tossed around like a rag doll trying to use this. Against humanoid size enemies (anything that can be staggered by the Weapon Skill), the stun and knockup on the WS can carry you. I just wish this had been an actual Greataxe instead of using the insanely slow awkward Colossal Weapon moveset. Oh yeah, this weapon also does less poise and stamina damage than most weapons a full class below it.
really hits home how badass godfrey was that he managed to become elden lord despite being tarnished AND using this shitass weapon.
- Anonymous
Honestly all I want them to do is increase the weapon buff time.
- Anonymous
I listened to comments here and youtubers and thought this weapon was garbage but this weapon is quite good . This can be better with better strength scaling but this is still very good .
First this weapon would get over 800 AR with only investment into strength and dex despite being D is quite significant which is decent and with ash of war you get around 7 to 8 % AR buff for 20 sec with other buffs it would easily cross 1000 AR by a significant margin .
Regal Roar ash of war does about 1600 damage in AOE only to enemies on ground this would kill most normal enemies and only attacks that can interrupt are overhead slam and charge attacks .
The R2 after Regal Roar absolutely sherds enemies it does nearly 3500 without any buffs . It lasts for 20 sec .
This is n't ROB or blasphemous blade where spamming weapon art is a automatic win or giant crusher where one charged R2 with RKR means most enemies is dead . This need a lot more work for this to work when this works it is incredibly satisfying .
- Anonymous
This weapon gets too much hate, yes the strength scaling is bad but the buff you get from the weapon art easily makes up for it. On a 60 str character the buff makes the ar go up to 834 or so one-handed. The R2 combo is also really good and shreds humanoid enemies even when not fully charged.
- Anonymous
why the **** are these strength weapons quality scaling, and why does this weapon suck ass
- Anonymous
Weapon of Godfrey AKA Horrah Loux, singlehandedly the physically strongest person in all The Lands Between. Leader of a people who value strength over all else. Who resorts to flat out wrestling you when his axe isn't doing the trick.
...Gets at max C scaling with Strength. While requiring 42 Str. to one hand.
The roar would be okay if it didn't take actual years to cast, and the buff was more significant. As it stands the only reason you'll use this is for fashion and nothing else. Very disappointing.
- Anonymous
did Godfrey have 1000 strength or something . seriously this weapon is ridiculously weak in your hands compared to what he uses . You can work a build around this but you could use any other weapon without much effort . If the buff lasted another 10 sec it would be a much better weapon
- Anonymous
Godfrey saw how bad this was and tossed like the trash it is.
- Anonymous
As a pure str user...after going the entire game using ruins and a few infused weapons I was praying that there was a remembrance weapon for me somewhere. The Radahn weapons were good but they didn't come close to scratching the same itch Yhorm and Dragonslayer Armor souls did.
I saw this guy....I got my hopes up...I saw the axe and thought "this is what I've been waiting for...this is it."
Upgraded it, ****ed with it for like 30 minutes in Haligtree, and then went back to ruins....biggest disappointment in the game.
They did pure str dirty as **** this game.

"Half the axe, half the proper scaling" -dev team, probably
- Anonymous
I absolutely love this weapon, but that doesn't change on how horribly it's balanced. It's very hard to hit enemies with it - which is alright - but when you actually do, this should absolutely wreck. And A from STR and that's a minimum. No need for that dex scaling at all. Come on, it's the weapon choice of freakin Godfrey of all people, you know, the badass barbarian who destroyed giants in a war and carried a big-a** lion on his back. I get that the weapon is broken, but it still just feels underpowered for its legacy.
If the barbarians DLC is true, I hope there'll be a way to fix the greataxe (mending it with another weapon like Twin Princes sword in DS3), unlocking its full potential.
One of the most poorly balanced weapons in this game. Crap damage with any scaling, you’re guaranteed to get out-damaged by a katana. From failed to appropriately scale this weapon

it only has c scaling in strength cause godfrey already had 300 str

I hate it when they make a unique weapon's ash of war grant it a unique moveset instead of just giving it a unique moveset.
- Anonymous
I agree it’s underwhelming. I think a quick patchable fix would be to greatly speed up the Ash of War on it. That would make up for the damage and recovery speed a bit. If you’re not going to buff damage and increase scaling, the least you could do is make the Ash of War a little quicker — as of now you can’t use it in PvP because it has short range and an insanely long and telegraphed animated wind up. That would be okay if the range was bigger, but since it’s so short, all you need to do is take a few steps back to avoid it entirely. And then those “lunge” powered-up R2’s from the Ash are also insanely slow. Axes are hated on, but I don’t think they’re as bad as they’re made out to be by the community…however this axe is pretty underpowered compared to even other Axes, forget other best in class Str weapons.

Give the people a higher strength scaling, redeem this weapon!!

>wielded by the biggest and strongest gigachad warrior in the game, able to floor the player character with just a stomp
>c strength scaling
- Anonymous
No surprise Godfrey had to throw that away, his pure strength build was never supposed to be for this kinda-shitty-quality greataxe
- Anonymous
Even on +9 I can get up to 1389 AR which is pretty neat, use Golden Vow and FGMS, a weapon in the left hand with Seppuku ( ofc White Mask and Lord Of Blood talisman combined with Shard Of Alexander) and use its ash of war.

**** weapon, **** scaling, **** damage, full physical but can't be buffed with resin. WTF fromsoft? Why is a boss weapon from one of the last bosses a piece of garbage compared to early game weapons?
*cough cough* Golden Halberd

I’m just hoping that we get the restored version of the axe in the DLC, like Artorias’s sword from DS1’s DLC.

The Most iconic boss of elden ring and the most disappointing weapon from all of the from software games.. really it's terrible :(( compared to rotten axe with lion's claw. there's no single point to use this.
Rotten Axe + Lion's claw:
3 hiits during which you have hyper armor to broke poise on ice giant when 4 just kills him on 130lvl and 70str.
Godfrey Axe
i don't know.. it doesn't have hyper armor, is ultra slow slower than most of the enemies and ashes of war and can be barely used. There are better arts and weapon's at all. it doesn't fit to the Godfrey. i tried many times but doesn't work. You just can use any worst axe or anything and kill stuff 4x faster.
Summary:
Even Rotten Axe + lion's claw can clear and kill groups, elites and bosses faster due to no hyper armor on godfrey art we need to wait to use the art and even if we use it we need to wait to use the charged attacks but the buff expire after 20 seconds.
btw don't try to use it near mages. When they are smart. They will kill you faster than you stomp with any spell just by attacking you and not running from you. Player will be killed 5 times during loading first stomp and it's not a joke ;;
This weapon deserved rework - unique move set - hyper armor - and only str scaling to fit the Godfrey.
- Anonymous
Reminds me of when I got the great lord greatsword in ds1. A disappointing weapon indeed.
- Anonymous
I think this is the closest weapon to the bkga in elden ring
- Anonymous
I messed around with this weapon in pvp just for fun and this weapon is actually remarkably serviceable-- as far as colossals go anyway. While it doesnt compete in damage compared to a giant crusher, it can still self buff, and the unique moveset change is something i wanted to note about: This may have been a fluke, but upon doing an r2 (not even charged), i actually hyper-armored an UGS, with me only having 70 or so poise, which is nuts. If you're a strength/quality build looking to have an option for UGS poke spam whilst looking for something off meta, give this a try.

Every page I look at on this wiki for any weapon is people complaining that it's not strong enough. But then, when you get OP weapons like RoB? Everyone loses their minds and says it needs to be nerfed. Anyone says that they like to use a crazy strong weapon? They're a shitty player with no skill, nerf it. But this weapon isn't as OP as humanly possible? Buff it. The same thing happens with most of the boss pages too. It's just everyone complaining that it's a re skin or it's unfair (there are a couple actually unfair bosses, that is true, but it's rare). If you just judged by comments on this wiki, everyone apparently hates this game.
- Anonymous
Awesome visual design, from a boss who is literally THE Warrior, and it gets nonsensically low quality scaling & zero stance damage. The ash of war is so artificially slow your character spends 70% of it standing in place doing literally nothing. Did they try to botch this weapon??
- Anonymous
It's weird that this weapon has high base damage and bad scaling because thematically that's in direct opposition to Godfrey's entire schtick; it should be the other way around with low base damage but high scaling.
Because that's strength from within and not because of some mystical OP weapon.
- Anonymous
I mean if they want this to be a quality weapon at least make dex scaling also a C.

People really crying over every weapon for not having A/S scaling uh? For the ones who don´t know weapon scaling is not only based on your stats, it also considerate base damage, and generally unique weapons have better base damage, ashes of war with really good scaling.
I have tested the scaling in comparison to Colossal weapons with 60 points in investment with the Wretch(note that the AoG need about 30 points in Dex and 50 points in Str to minmax, not just all points in STR -.- ) and to summarize the Axe of Godfrey only looses to the others colosal weapons about 10 to 25 points in AR. absolutly marginal, the only real contender is the Giant Crusher wich the diference is about 145 point in AR BUT every Colossal looses to the GC because this thing need 60 Str, wich means you are more restricted with build diversity and the other real dowside is the weight, 8,5 more, that is 26,5 weight in a single weapon, if you are playing PVP you have to invest more points in End to be able to wield this weapon. Personally I prefer the range of AoG with his really good skill, it has good damage, can be delayed and have incredible poise
Just try the weapons that you like, don´t just look the wiki and discard everthing like a robot just because it has a B or C
- Anonymous
Look, at the end of the day it isn't an unusable weapon, it still does enough damage. The problem is that it simply doesn't really stack up against counterparts and that Godfrey is probably the most badass boss in the game without feeling like bs, making the weapon not live up to him. Which is obviously disappointing. It doesn't help that by the time you get it you'll already have found and used better weapons, which only increases the sense of disappointment.
I kinda wish the weapon art could be charged, where uncharged it would do a quick aoe shockwave like Godfrey likes to use. These would not do much damage but would help stagger and combo into actual hits. Whereas when charged you'd get the current weapon art. This would not only make the weapon a lot more flexible, it would also allow it to be paired with Godfrey's Icon, which just makes sense to me.
- Anonymous
People need to stop comparing everything to things like Rivers of Blood or the old Moonveil. This is far from a bad weapon. Speccing into roar/charge attacks, you can see some really high damage numbers, poise through most things, and stagger things out of it. But it isn't just press one button and face roll the entire game. And people will sadly say anything that doesn't do so is "a waste of time." This is a fun, balanced weapon that isn't a "CHEESE PvP with this INSANE OP WEAPON" Youtube clickbait title. I highly recommend this if you want a strong weapon that is just enjoyable to play with. My only gripe there is to it is that you get it rather late unless you rush the story before optional content. Makes a fun NG cleaner upper and a great NG+ main.

Yes, the scaling is disappointing. Yes, the enhanced heavies aren't very good.
But worst of all, this weapon doesn't have the satisfying cleaving sound effects that Godfrey has when he swings his axe into the ground. A true shame.

Not gonna lie, the more I look at it, the more I get pissed thinking this should be one of, if not, the best strength weapons in the game. This scaling, moveset, base damage and recovery time is infuriating for a weapon that belonged to one of the most legendary characters in the game. Moves like a hammer, needs more attacks swinging sideways like Godfrey does. Ash of war needs faster recovery. And above all else better scaling and higher base damage. I’m f*cking tired of From just not giving a f*ck about the weapons of these legendary bosses. Firs Gwyn’s sword, then the Firelink Greatsword and now this? Colossal weapons in this game are already undercooked as it is, this is just a slap in the face. This should absolutely be one of the best weapons in the game and meanwhile From only cares about katanas and sorceries.

jesus christ, this thing is just unusable in pvp. too slow to pressure, too weak to trade. the weapon art and heavies look badass, but everyone with a brain can dodge them easily. why does fromsoft hate strength?

There's currently a mod for the "restored" version of this axe, by Garden of Eyes. For those interested. Changes the skill and the enhanced heavies a bit and changes the look of the weapon.

The weapon of the first Elden lord shouldn’t blow this much ass. Increase the strength scaling and make the stomps the size of a small country just like Godfrey does, and it might be good.

Well he gets a lot stronger after throwing away his axe so it all makes sense

If/when this game gets DLC I really hope get a restored version of this weapon. I really want the unbroken, double bladed version of this thing.
Do you know what the worst thing is? This weapon even failed in trading damage with your opponent. When you try to trade, you will get attacked, right? But for some stupid reason, your upper torso will twist after getting hit, causing the swinging path to stray from the intended path and then miss. You will literally miss an attack when standing right in front of your target trading damage. I've tested dueling with people, even a dagger can cause this problem to happen. If anyone cares about this weapon and wants it to be fixed(maybe next patch), help submit a bug report to FromSoft.
- Anonymous
Tested that the 1.04 patch for colossal weapon damage while two handing does not affect the alternate R2 moveset after using the WA buff.
Even if you're two handing the weapon it doesn't get increase in damage for the the alternate R2. Goddamit FromSoft, the least you can do is make it so the alternate R2 attacks are affected by Godfrey Icon if you're not interested in buffing this weapon

I might be wrong here, but considering the shite scaling, this weapon might perform best at 42 strength, because of the high base damage.
basically get good damage for minimal investment at RL 125.

I have 1 problem with this weapon, the buff duration, ash of war can be easily dodged, but R2 with buff is where this weapon shines in pvp, unfort the buff last So fkin quic and u need to repeat this long ass cast time ash of war
- Anonymous
At 99 strength and 99 Dex, this weapon at +10 does 918 damage - 963 when 2 handed. When using the skill, 1007 1 handed - 1060 2 handed.
- Anonymous
Missed opportunity to make this weapon's dodge attacks after the Weapon Art Buff make it so you stomp the ground instead to imitate Godrey, you could make the AoE small so it wouldn't be broken and would be quicker than the cool but abysmal dodge attack it shares with the others

such an absolute shame that the first elden lord, an absolute titan of a man who's renowned as a true leader. and one of the most powerful lore characters. Even having WARRIOR in his original title of Hoarah Loux, Has a weapon that scales mediocre with WARRIORS. people who use STRENGTH as a primary. Fromsoft could remedy this by emphasizing the weapon art itself and buffing that to be better. make the reason to use this weapon more worth it, i suggest the following and hope even a few of these be incorporated but. Probably wont be:
Decrease the long windup of the initial weapon art cast. Make it a little faster AND reduce the recovery for when its finally cast.
Increase the scaling of the damage buff it gives, Give us more AR than it does right now.
Increase the duration, Right now it feels like it only lasts 15-20 seconds (Testing required) make it 30.
Increase the radius of the AOE Stomps even by a little. for both the initial cast and the heavies thereafter. Not an insane amount, but right now just about any enemy with any sort of mobility just dashes out of this.
At the time of posting this. the weapon itself is just lackluster compared to just about every other colossal weapon in the game. Boasting higher AR. usually longer reaching too. And the utility of being able to put ashes of war on them makes them much more versatile and usually far more damaging than what Godfrey's Axe could hope to be. not to mention adding extra scaling with Heavy. I do hope this weapon gets better in the future. Just like the Grafted Dragon, its a completely missed opportunity.
- Anonymous
Give this the black knight axe moveset from ds3 and then this thing will actually be worth using.
Consider using Axe Talisman and Roar Medallion alongside this weapon. Roar Medallion buffs your self-buff SLAM by 15%, and Axe Talisman gives nice damage boost to your R2s, which you will be constantly using when wielding Axe of Godfrey.
