Dragonscale Blade is a Katana in Elden Ring. The Dragonscale Blade scales primarily with Dexterity, with reduced scaling in Strength, and is a good Weapon for dealing Slash and Pierce damage against Lightning-susceptible enemies.
A weapon made by sharpening a Gravel Stone scale,
thought to be the source of ancient dragon immortality,
into an unclouded blade.
Alas, the Dragonkin Soldiers never attained immortality,
and perished as decrepit, pale imitations of their skyborn kin.

One of only two katanas that doesn't have that stupid easy mode bleed bullshit
- Anonymous
A bunch of people in comments whining how this isn't good, while using wrong build (faith\int) and crying that this does low damage. The only thing that is low is your intelligence.
- Anonymous
this weapon had a b - faith scaling(+10) in 1.00. Tthere is no true Faith Katana. But two Int(one is a strength with no real investment) and including dragonscale blade, 5 with Physical scaling. RoB had faith too but thats cuz of total lack of arcane scaling and the op weapon art in the game.
They clearly made a mistake by removing the Faith scaling on the Scale Blade most likly someone thought "lightning dex thing" or somthing by giving it 20 dex scaling ( 1.00 had 12 Str/ 15 Dex and 18 Faith, One point more in Str than the Uchigatana) There are only 3 sources of ice lightning and all of them had faith in focus, sure inflicting frost buildup is now its a mage/arcane thing these days but that was most likely a source of the dmg/buildup as well. They did this one real dirty. Same goes for Drake hallberd (str22 /Dex10/Faith20)
- Anonymous
It would be a fun early game weapon, if it weren't locked behind a few dozen hours of game. If you want something unique for Limgrave, ask someone to drop it for you.
- Anonymous
Its sad that there is no reason to use this over the nagakiba with lightning slash or any other aow. The nagakiba is longer, does more damage, has innate lightning damage and blood loss and the aow is far cheaper.

I hope From adds Faith scaling to it in the dlc or at least gives us more frozen lighting incantations. I need it!
Aww look it has a tiny dragonkin soldier head on the hilt, aww so cute

I don’t care this is the worst katana. I like it because it’s fun to use
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Ice Lightning is one of the coolest weapons effects imo and it comes with a pretty solid and great looking Sword, that’s a W in my book. Just hope the DLC adds more weapons with this art.
- Anonymous
Maybe I'm mistaken, but it doesn't look like the blade has a piercing animation.
Contrary to the Uchigatana, this weapon does a Slash when using the Strong Attack.

If you can somehow make this work in PvP, I will have endless respect for you

one of only TWO katanas in the game that DON'T have intrinsic bleed buildup (Serpentbone Blade is the other one, and it still has intrinsic poison buildup)

should had the same r2s as serpentbone to capitalize off the frost from the l2 even if it has to be a little slower (i will genuinely learn japanese to be a creative designer for future fromsoft games of this type at this rate)
- Anonymous
Should have been a straight or Hell maybe even a spear or greatspear. But nah, it's Japan so gotta make it a katana cause "muh glorious nippon" and weeb bait. As if we didn't already have 3 separate busted katana already, while the other types I mentioned have hardly anything of worth in the entite category
- Anonymous
day 1 of waiting for this to somehow become ludicrously op like the dragon halberd did, i stood by this thing since the first miserable trip through the lake of rot and i'l stand by it when it's cancelled
- Anonymous
This thing would've been unstoppable if it had Faith scaling and innate frostbite/lighting damage
In 1.0 version this thing has base frost build up, base lightning damage and faith scaling...
Where did all of those went?
- Anonymous
Worst katana in the game imo. Literally tragic in so many aspects. No faith scaling to pair with dragon cult incant builds. No innate frost. High dex requirement but it has way too much strength scaling. Horrible dex scaling. 2nd shortest katana. Lost it's unique R2's similar to the Serperentbone Blade. Low base damage.
It does fine on a 50/50 str/quality build but a quality uchigatana still beats it by far two-handed. Did I mention you can put lightning slash on the uchigatana as well to completely eclipse this?
- Anonymous
I want to like this thing, but there is just too much odd stuff going on here:
-It has a lightning buff which is not great synergy w/ slash since many enemies that are weak to lightning are also resistant to slash e.g. heavy-armored knights, dragons etc.
-The frostbite build-up is ok but it requires FP to access and it only lasts a short time, making it the only katana with no innate status build-up
-If you're Faith focused (which you probably are if you're using this since Intelligence provides much better options) you're limited to one spell option for a frostbite build (not
counting the two dragon breath spells since they also require Arcane and aren't Dragon Cult/Kin like this and Frozen Lightning Spear).
-Even more odd is while lightning infusions scale with Dex and Dragon Cult incants scale with Faith, this has no Faith scaling and thus no direct synergy with Dragon Cult incants, and its lightning buff doesn't even scale with Dex or anything at all.
Feel like this could've been a really awesome weapon but it just got fumbled so it's stuck being mediocre.

Worst katana. Lowest base damage, second shortest reach, no innate bleed, frostbite build-up is mediocre and temporary as you have to apply it w/ the skill (thus also costing FP). The skill gives you both frostbite and lightning damage sure but it accels at neither and the damage/build-up don't even scale with anything.
If it's lightning damage you want run a Keen Uchi w/ Electrify Armament, for frostbite run a Cold Uchi w/ Chilling Mist or Hoarfrost Stomp or whatever. This thing is just the worst of both worlds.
- Anonymous
Frostbite buff is pitiful... only 60 build-up? Chilling Mist inflicts that many times over and Cold-infusions have triple digit native build-up. Skill is more like a lightning buff with a small chance to proc frostbite as a treat.

It would make sens for this weapon to NOT apply bleed ONLY if frost would be native, like it would be a fun touch like the blade electrify and cold burn you making your wound instant coterised by cold ! That would explain the no bleed.
This weapon has one of the biggest style of all weapon of the game but have basic moveset and pretty basic everything, one of the biggest miss opporunity.
It should have
- little but native frost / lightning damage
- Skill should be a more unique combo that when used infuse the blade with a stronger frost / lightning buff
- a bit more unique moveset
Here you got a nice weapon. Overall its a shame that fromsoft tend a bit too much to reuse assets, im fine with regular weapon to share 80,90, even 100% of moveset but time to time change some pattern like they actualy do on some weapon to mix a bit the opportunity and strategy but especialy for unique weapon !
It make sens that some have "basic" moveset, but other like this one no, it should defenetly has more unique aspects
- Anonymous
Still think the lightning damage and frost buildup should be native to the weapon, instead of requiring the skill. That way, it would be comparable to the Serpentbone blade
- Anonymous
I mean it's ok I guess, but seriously just use a Cold Uchi. This thing doesn't even inflict bleed and the frostbite buff is temporary.

Great for low-level invasions. Not op or twinky (like his Halberd counterpart) but decent to challenge yourself against 2v1/3v1s. Of course someone has to drop it for you or use chea- i mean reach lake of rot and defeat dragonkin soldier hahah (also good for pve)
- Anonymous
They need to add bleed and faith scaling and it would be viable.
- Anonymous
Think a cool tweak to this weapon, and Lightning Slash in general, would be if when you charged yourself/the sword with Lightning, you get a small Dragonbolt Blessing-like effect where enemy attacks bounce off you at reduced damage and leave them vulnerable to the downward swing. That'd be some pretty cool outplays.
Just learned today that the pommel is a dragonkin soldier head. Also why dose a katana have a pommel?
- Anonymous
"ice lightning sword" is like naming lions claw "somersault attack"
- Anonymous
added faith scaling when you use the skill is all i ask, if they can do it for the great club they can do it for this
- Anonymous
This thing needs bleed buildup to be competitive again. Or they should make a frozen lightning buff you can add to your weapon like bloodflame blade.
- Anonymous
I think it’s good at low lvl and then at high (99 str 99dex) levels, but in between, it’ll get outperformed by a lightning uchi w/ lightning slash, especially in PVP. In order to match normal dps of the uchi, you need the enemy to already be frosted. W/o frost it’s very subpar, leaning towards slash rather than lightning.
Biggest problem with this weapon, though, is that the buff is just way too expensive. Regular lightning slash costs 10FP, I can use it 8 times at 78 FP/10 mind. It’s easy to weave into a combo or blow a slash on a regular enemy. Meanwhile Ice Lightning Swords costs 25(!!!) FP, so it can only be used 3 times in the same scenario. AND unlike the uchi, this weapon is entirely dependent on having the ash activated to do meaningful damage/build status. I seriously find myself planning out how many enemies I can kill in that 40 second window with the dragon scale blade just to maximize FP, while with lightning uchi FP is literally never a concern. Plus you often sneak a slash with only 5 FP left. And then the dragon halberd only costs 15 for the 1st spin, so the buff is almost 50% cheaper on the halberd compared to the katana????
I put like 1-200 hrs using just this weapon. When I switched to others I realized how hard this weapon is held back. Needs SOMETHING to bring it up to par. More physical AR? Maybe 20-40 lightning AR? So the buff is meaningful? Innate frost/bleed? Not pitiful range? Idk.
So I was doing a Jetstream Sam build, then someone named "Raiden" invaded me with this sword, and I took that personally...

It’s not easy being the best katana in the game, but he carries the burden
- Anonymous
radahn can be fairly easily cheesed with poison and rot at a low level if you want to get your hands on this early. And for the dragonkin, poison and bleed are your best bet (poison mist uchigatana worked well for me)
- Anonymous
Good weapon, especially for a lower level character, synergies with RWSI and Millicents' prosthesis, with the frost debuff. I do wish the buff counted as a separate hit like with the spell buffs though. Maybe this is powerful enough without it.
My favorite weapon in the game. Looks sick, has my favorite element and status effect, good ash of war, great moveset. It would be perfect if it was a little longer and maybe had the flat damage changed to scale with your stats instead
- Anonymous
While it's missing out on the built in status build of other katana's and the versatility of its halberd counterpart, getting the same 160 lightning damage buff as the dragon halberd on a much faster weapon is pretty insane. That alone makes it worth considering alongside the frostbite and looking sick as hell.
- Anonymous
Wish they would give it passive frostbite build up of like 50 or something since all other katanas have some passive stat buildup, but it's still pretty fun.
- Anonymous
Cons:
- Glacier slow charged heavy
- mid damage
- lack of bleed buildup pretty much that every other katana has
Pros:
- incredibly stylish
- cool weapon art (that is sadly mostly useful against big, slow enemies)
- Frost buildup for 45 seconds after using weapon art
All in all, one of the worst in its weapon class but personally my favourite.
- Anonymous
One of my favorite weapons, dual-wielding two of them rn. Really wanted to be able to use Ice Lightning more beyond just that one spell. Then I randomly found out there are 2 Dragonkin weapons that do ice lightning and I dont even need Faith to use it plus they look nice too. Amazing. I just like the color of the blue ice lightning so much more than the red or yellow lightning we got.

Does the bonus damage to dragons apply to other sources as damage as well when you have dragonscale katana sheathed?

Looks cool. If i grow bored of every other weapon classes, i might use katana and i will get this

very good low level weapon if you dont mind the exhausting journey to go grab it. boss that drops it can be memed pretty easily with spirit summons.

love this weapon but for the love of marika why is the dragonkin head on it UPSIDE DOWN???? please fromsoft fix my lil dragon boi, turn his head around so its facing upwards when you wield the katana...

should weigh less considering how much shorter than uchi it is. could be a decent option for blue dancer charm build.
- Anonymous
If this weapon had innate bleed buildup, it would be one of the best katanas available. However, it's on the shorter side of the katanas and the lightning might be a cool gimmick, its not useful enough to make this weapon viable compared to the other available katanas.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I like this one a lot, a katana without bleed, so that boss fights last longer.
- Anonymous
It doesn't even weigh less than the uchi despite being considerably shorter. Could have been a good blue dancer charm weapon.
- Anonymous
This thing should have an automatic frost passive. It’s stupid how they get rid of the bleed build up and don’t even replace it when the weapon is clearly meant to have frost build up.
- Anonymous
Probably my favorite katana in the game. I admit there are better options for stats but this one looks really cool and it has ice lightning which is enough for me
- Anonymous
It’s a decent katana unlike the meta chasers or idiots in the comments who put no time in testing it, comparing it, and optimizing a build around it would have you believe. It’s definitely not the best but certainly isn’t terrible and almost any weapon in the game can be great if you actually git gud and know how to optimize it. Maxed out and buffed(maxed, buffed and with 60 dex you get 679) it’ll obviously outdamage a maxed keen uchigatana. But a lightning Uchigatana with lightning slash will out damage by like 30-40points(maxed, buffed, and at 60 dex it’s about 714) . But a frostbite procc will give the Dragonscale better dps than a lightning Uchi with lightning slash. But you can do better dps by powerstancing the lightning Uchi with a cold Uchi. Ig it really comes down to whether you want to proc frost faster or have alittle higher dps. But you could always just two hand a cold Uchi with chilling mist, instant proc a boss then switch back to the lightning Uchi. I personally like to powerstance this sword with the serpentbone blade for deadly poison and frost procs. I’ve been shredding enemies with these two weapons. Imo Fromsoft should make an exception with this weapon and have it’s lightning buff scale up with dex(obviously not too much for balance reasons). Maybe nerf the base damage a little so it isn’t op. It makes more sense to me lorewise for this weapon to dish out more lightning damage instead of it having a flat value. Especially since the boss fight that drops it is pretty tedious. But other than that it’s a decent weapon, there’s obviously better alternatives but you can definitely make it with this weapon.
- Anonymous
Using this with +25 cold uchi at NG+6, very fun build, although it’s pretty uneven since you need to buff this to do any passive or extra damage, and when you do it’s lightning, that with cold uchi doing magic damage makes it a little wonky, but still fun.

Honestly a waste of such a cool weapon- would've been so much better as a faith katana than quality

Every stage of the weapon art makes Malenia flinch, its like a risk free R2. I went into her arena 2 handing the sword just to test it vs her and wondering how i was going to have change my build to make her easier because i wasnt optimized at all then I ended up killing her in like 15 minutes, almost killed her on first attempt with the weapon but i choked in phase 2 at the last moment. Its like my 8th malenia kill just playing through the game normally and it was the easiest weapon so far, no i dont have a life thanks for asking.

For as cool as this weapon is it sucks that it kinda sucks. Bad in pvp and way better options in pve. It needs tradable hyper armor on the aow and a small aoe from the lightning strike to ward people off and boost it's trading potential. Would make it strong but not ridiculous op.

if this was permantely covered with lightning it would be the coolest weapon ever

Is the ice lightning frost build up increased by your arcane stat? Should be right, but this feels like one of those weird times fromsoft would just gimp a weapon with no scaling or some dumb ****.

Should have innate lightning like the halberd? You get this later(usually) and it's far less impressive

Lightning damage boost you get from casting should scale with Dex and the “Ice Lightning” effect should act as a bloodflame type of status, where when you strike with the weapon the Frost status effect slowly builds up. This would not make the weapon OP imo, but it would make it very worth using even in endgame.

patch 1.07 the weapon skill grants 160 but not 130 lighting damage to the blade, and the buff lasts longer as well. In mid-game (means you have +5 or +6 upgrade and probably in Lyndell) this almost doubles the attack power. Since the base physical damage isn't very satisfying, with the buff the katana is still weak comparing to some super strong mid-game weapons with more status effects (cold grave scythe for example), but it's a decent choice. Do note that the lightning damage buff from weapon skill doesn't scale with anything if you want to fight your way with this cool katana until end game.
