Dragonscale Blade is a Katana in Elden Ring. The Dragonscale Blade scales primarily with Dexterity, with reduced scaling in Strength, and is a good Weapon for dealing Slash and Pierce damage against Lightning-susceptible enemies.

A weapon made by sharpening a Gravel Stone scale, thought to be the source of ancient dragon immortality, into an unclouded blade.

Alas, the Dragonkin Soldiers never attained immortality, and perished as decrepit, pale imitations of their skyborn kin.

Elden Ring Dragonscale Blade Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Ice Lightning Sword
  • This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
  • Can't be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables
  • Dragonscale Blade can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
  • Guard Boost goes from 32 to 30 at +10
  • Deals +20% damage against dragon icon 40px Dragon type enemies
  • Deals +10% damage against ancient dragon icon 40px Ancient Dragon type enemies
  • Do note however, that Dragons typically have high resistance for slash-type damage. The Dragonscale Blade moveset consists almost entirely of slash attacks (except running attack and 1h heavy). As a result, this weapon is not optimal for slaying dragons and magma wyrms and may be outperformed by a regular spear or thrusting sword of the same upgrade level.
  • When the weapon skill is activated, the sword gets temporarily buffed with additional Lightning damage, and a passive Frostbite buildup. The blue lightning does regular lightning damage.
  • Ice Lightning effect from the AoW lasts 45 seconds.
  • Buff adds 160 flat Lightning Damage to weapon ar and 80 frost build up.
  • The pommel resembles the head of a Dragonkin.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 500 Runes.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.08Katanas poise damage has been reduced only on PVP.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.

Good weapon, especially for a lower level character, synergies with RWSI and Millicents' prosthesis, with the frost debuff. I do wish the buff counted as a separate hit like with the spell buffs though. Maybe this is powerful enough without it.

      • My favorite weapon in the game. Looks sick, has my favorite element and status effect, good ash of war, great moveset. It would be perfect if it was a little longer and maybe had the flat damage changed to scale with your stats instead

        • Anonymous

While it's missing out on the built in status build of other katana's and the versatility of its halberd counterpart, getting the same 160 lightning damage buff as the dragon halberd on a much faster weapon is pretty insane. That alone makes it worth considering alongside the frostbite and looking sick as hell.

          • Anonymous

Wish they would give it passive frostbite build up of like 50 or something since all other katanas have some passive stat buildup, but it's still pretty fun.

            • Anonymous

              Cons:

              - Glacier slow charged heavy

              - mid damage

              - lack of bleed buildup pretty much that every other katana has

              Pros:

              - incredibly stylish

              - cool weapon art (that is sadly mostly useful against big, slow enemies)

              - Frost buildup for 45 seconds after using weapon art

All in all, one of the worst in its weapon class but personally my favourite.

One of my favorite weapons, dual-wielding two of them rn. Really wanted to be able to use Ice Lightning more beyond just that one spell. Then I randomly found out there are 2 Dragonkin weapons that do ice lightning and I dont even need Faith to use it plus they look nice too. Amazing. I just like the color of the blue ice lightning so much more than the red or yellow lightning we got.

Does the bonus damage to dragons apply to other sources as damage as well when you have dragonscale katana sheathed?

                  • Anonymous

very good low level weapon if you dont mind the exhausting journey to go grab it. boss that drops it can be memed pretty easily with spirit summons.

love this weapon but for the love of marika why is the dragonkin head on it UPSIDE DOWN???? please fromsoft fix my lil dragon boi, turn his head around so its facing upwards when you wield the katana...

should weigh less considering how much shorter than uchi it is. could be a decent option for blue dancer charm build.

                        • If this weapon had innate bleed buildup, it would be one of the best katanas available. However, it's on the shorter side of the katanas and the lightning might be a cool gimmick, its not useful enough to make this weapon viable compared to the other available katanas.

                          • Anonymous

It doesn't even weigh less than the uchi despite being considerably shorter. Could have been a good blue dancer charm weapon.

This thing should have an automatic frost passive. It’s stupid how they get rid of the bleed build up and don’t even replace it when the weapon is clearly meant to have frost build up.

Probably my favorite katana in the game. I admit there are better options for stats but this one looks really cool and it has ice lightning which is enough for me

It’s a decent katana unlike the meta chasers or idiots in the comments who put no time in testing it, comparing it, and optimizing a build around it would have you believe. It’s definitely not the best but certainly isn’t terrible and almost any weapon in the game can be great if you actually git gud and know how to optimize it. Maxed out and buffed(maxed, buffed and with 60 dex you get 679) it’ll obviously outdamage a maxed keen uchigatana. But a lightning Uchigatana with lightning slash will out damage by like 30-40points(maxed, buffed, and at 60 dex it’s about 714) . But a frostbite procc will give the Dragonscale better dps than a lightning Uchi with lightning slash. But you can do better dps by powerstancing the lightning Uchi with a cold Uchi. Ig it really comes down to whether you want to proc frost faster or have alittle higher dps. But you could always just two hand a cold Uchi with chilling mist, instant proc a boss then switch back to the lightning Uchi. I personally like to powerstance this sword with the serpentbone blade for deadly poison and frost procs. I’ve been shredding enemies with these two weapons. Imo Fromsoft should make an exception with this weapon and have it’s lightning buff scale up with dex(obviously not too much for balance reasons). Maybe nerf the base damage a little so it isn’t op. It makes more sense to me lorewise for this weapon to dish out more lightning damage instead of it having a flat value. Especially since the boss fight that drops it is pretty tedious. But other than that it’s a decent weapon, there’s obviously better alternatives but you can definitely make it with this weapon.

Using this with +25 cold uchi at NG+6, very fun build, although it’s pretty uneven since you need to buff this to do any passive or extra damage, and when you do it’s lightning, that with cold uchi doing magic damage makes it a little wonky, but still fun.

Every stage of the weapon art makes Malenia flinch, its like a risk free R2. I went into her arena 2 handing the sword just to test it vs her and wondering how i was going to have change my build to make her easier because i wasnt optimized at all then I ended up killing her in like 15 minutes, almost killed her on first attempt with the weapon but i choked in phase 2 at the last moment. Its like my 8th malenia kill just playing through the game normally and it was the easiest weapon so far, no i dont have a life thanks for asking.

For as cool as this weapon is it sucks that it kinda sucks. Bad in pvp and way better options in pve. It needs tradable hyper armor on the aow and a small aoe from the lightning strike to ward people off and boost it's trading potential. Would make it strong but not ridiculous op.

Is the ice lightning frost build up increased by your arcane stat? Should be right, but this feels like one of those weird times fromsoft would just gimp a weapon with no scaling or some dumb ****.

                                              • Anonymous

This thing now rocks at low levels. Currently wrecking Godrick for people with it at +3 using the dex talisman, lightning physick and lightning scorpion talisman. Haven't tried it in PvP yet but should be good.

                                                • Anonymous

Lightning damage boost you get from casting should scale with Dex and the “Ice Lightning” effect should act as a bloodflame type of status, where when you strike with the weapon the Frost status effect slowly builds up. This would not make the weapon OP imo, but it would make it very worth using even in endgame.

why does every comment try to add suggestions to make this op like other katanas? let me enjoy my cold zappy blade

patch 1.07 the weapon skill grants 160 but not 130 lighting damage to the blade, and the buff lasts longer as well. In mid-game (means you have +5 or +6 upgrade and probably in Lyndell) this almost doubles the attack power. Since the base physical damage isn't very satisfying, with the buff the katana is still weak comparing to some super strong mid-game weapons with more status effects (cold grave scythe for example), but it's a decent choice. Do note that the lightning damage buff from weapon skill doesn't scale with anything if you want to fight your way with this cool katana until end game.

                                                          Increased weapon attack power.
Increased the duration and attack power of the effect that grants the weapon a lightning attribute. [45 secs]
Reduced time between the skill activation and being able to perform actions.

Let's be honest, if you're making a katana build you're using either RoB, Moonveil, HoM or the meteoric ore blade

                                                            • Anonymous

This one is fun to caught people off guard with it AoW many player avoid the first strike, but the second lightning hit them as they rush to atack you

                                                              • Anonymous

An easy fix to the Meteoric Ore Blade, Serpentbone Blade and Dragonscale Blade Katanas would be to increase the Meteoric Ore Blade Katana's scaling to B Str, E Dex and B Int, making it the Strength equivalent of the Moonveil Katana.

What I would do with the Serpentbone Blade katana is to make it buffable with grease or incantations(Similar to Bloodhound fang or Treespear), giving you the option to get bleed from Bloodflame Blade or more poison build up from Poison Armamanent.

What I would do with the Dragonscale Blade Katana is give it a passive frostbite of 50, making it more viable without using its Ash of War. The last thing I would do is change the Ash of War. It's simply not a good AOW to use as a weapon buff. What I had in mind would be to give it a AOW duplicate like some of the other Katanas have, like moonveil having a better version of unsheathe and ROA having a better version of Double Slash. So my idea would be to give it a better version of Piercing Fang(Nagakiba's AOW), and what I would change about it would be to make the blade call down a bolt of ice lightning into the blade whilst holding the weapon horizontally similar to Piercing Fang, and when thrusting, bringing down the bolt of ice lightning upon a foe like the ash of war it already has, giving the 130 flat lightning damage and 30 frostbite build up instead of 80, since it already has the passive 50 frostbite.

By making these changes, It would make them more likely to be used and be able to hold their end against the Moonveil and Rivers of Blood Katanas.

                                                                • Anonymous

Shame its unique moveset form the network test was removed and added to the Serpentbone blade instead of making the other weapon different. as of now the only thing this weapon has over the others is its S scaling in fashion which is more than enough to use it over the others

                                                                  • Anonymous

I kinda wish it had intrinsic frostbite build up, either that or bleed. Kind of annoying that even Moonveil has intrinsic bleed build-up, but this one doesn't have any status effect.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I think this is a very fun weapon, the katana pretty decent, damage is ok and I'll deal with it, but the weapon skill is so much fun to use, that initial hit on cast feels rewarding to land.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Dual wield with Serpentbone in the offhand. Works a treat! Most enemies will die in one or two hits - if the frostbite doesn't get them, the poison buildup will!

                                                                        • Anonymous

I think all this needs for a buff is to make the skill's initial stomp hitbox a little larger, because when you get the stomp, the lighning cleave is guaranteed to hit. it's kinda annoying how you have to be in dagger range to have a decent chance at landing it.

I'm still gonna use it regardless since fashion > stats

                                                                          • Anonymous

This could have been faith scaling considering it's lighting and dragon stuff, and the actual frozen lightning spear incantation is faith scaling. Feel like it woulda brought it all together with the other arc and int katanas.

                                                                            • Anonymous

This should have had higher base damage than every other katana to compensate for the fact it has no innate bleed.

                                                                              • Anonymous

This katana made me think of historical obsidian weapons, with in-game gravel stones manifesting how obsidian usually can be sharper than steel, but very fragile. Hence, no blood loss buildup. But here I am, in the middle of testing out this weapon against most unlucky enemies in my path, first of which was Blaidd. (He should've left me a Black Knife Assassin to freeze and shock, though.)

                                                                                • Anonymous

I love how so many comments are pointing out that this shouldn't be a faith weapon because "lightning scales with dex", even though every lightning incantation requires faith.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I am definitely not the first one to say this, but oh god, just WHY is this not a Faith-scaling Katana. Even a measly C/C in Dex/Faith with innate Frostbite and base Faith-scaling Lightning damage would have already made it truly unique and cool weapon. We would actually have a cool and effective weapon to complement any build centered around lightning-based Dragon Cult Incantations and Frozen Lightning of Dragonkin. Instead Dragonscale blade is forced to compete with the tops of their respective food chains - other Katanas like RoB and Moonveil and Dex-lightning sniper rifles like Bolt of Gransax without anything unique to offer. Yes, it looks amazing and has fantastic lore to it but that's it, sadly.

                                                                                    • I've been testing this out in PvP for the last couple days, with 14 STR and 54 Dexterity, it has exactly 500 AR (one-handed) at +10. There are definitely better options when it comes to katanas since this doesn't have any passive effects such as bleed or frost but damn does it look cool, maybe the coolest. The damage itself is enough to win your fights, in fact, this weapon has the fairest damage output in the game imo. Also it's element buff is quite a rare thing to find in the game so it has a unique feeling, plus it's nice to see some variety in PvP. ツ Cool weapon, having fun with this and the Frozen Lightning Spear combo so far!

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Genuine buff idea biggest problem is it's highly telegraphed and your opponent has to genuinely screw up just for you to land it perhaps a rework perhaps a two-step Ash of War so you would have the weapon buff and then the attack as separate FP costs and perhaps the blade attack to be much faster and a damage boost overall

                                                                                        • Anonymous

This should be buffed. Adding lightning damage as default might work. Or default frost build up. Or hyper armour for weapon skill animation. Either of these 3 will make this katana useful. As of now, it's just fun but really lacking.. the AR isn't even high enough to have such handicap.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I just wish this either dealt Bleed, Frost by default, or the buff scaled with Faith. I like the idea so much but it's just so bad compared to everything else in the katana class.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Needs a small buff, either hyper armor for the weapon skill or adding lightning dmg to the weapon's physcial attack (like the bolt of gransax spear) or a default frost build up. A very fun weapon to use, but not really useful in most situations.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Should have at least had a weapon attack draw/slash like the uchi, but with the added buff and strike. The scaling makes sense, lightning scales to dex mostly. I get why everyone's complaing, but in th. End it makes sense as far a stats go.. it's just that lousy WA... Elden Bling says don't carefulness rock it till my socks fall off.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

"Please note that the sword crafted from literal gravel stone scale, infused with ice-lightning AND bonus dragon damage actually sucks against dragons."

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

WA has same FP cost as blade of death for...? I imagine the flat 130 damage is crazy if you can get it early but I did not and it's very underwhelming which is a shame. I just wanted a cool katana that didn't make me feel obligated to go dex/arc :(

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I'm pairing this with the Serpentbone Blade for maximum Elden Bling, so that's two questionable katana on one Maidenless.
Boy do I wish they at least give it some passive lightning damage or minimum frost build-up.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        This weapon looks pretty cool.

                                                                                                        But man, is it lacking.

The relatively high FP cost WA with a short duration is awkward, the attack it's attached to is bad and it's necessary to make the sword not complete junk (As the 80 frost build up helps match against every other not-trash katana's 55 bleed build up)

Still, it can hit like a truck, especially if you grab it early, because the buff gives 130 flat lightning damage at all upgrade levels and is independent of stats. But it can fall off later on in the game when stat caps are being hit and things are being upgraded to +9/+10 or +24/+25.

But later on, you'd probably be better off with a Lightning Uchigatana/Nagakiba with Chilling Mist.

As they'll do more lightning damage (Which is less resisted than the slashing damage this weapon primarily does and you can boost it better with Lightning Scorpion/Lightning Tear), proc Frostbite faster and also have bleed procs to boot.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

For those saying "stop complaining about it lacking faith" or something along those lines:
                                                                                                          - It was a Faith katana in the test; as well as having a cooler heavy attack and had passive lightning damage.
                                                                                                          - Katanas have no faith option besides ashes, and ashes are honestly not too amazing anyways
                                                                                                          - It literally does not go alongside it's own magical counterpart; Frozen Lightning Spear, which is a Faith based incantation.
                                                                                                          - Lightning in general for Elden Ring has been jank with it's "I wanna be a dex element :)" while having a large portion of it being Faith.

At 55/55, it only gets ONE less attack rating than a 20/90 dex build (one handed). It could even be seen as better quality, because of the much higher 2 handed strength scaling.
