Dueling Shield is a Thrusting Shield in Elden Ring. It was added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Dueling Shield scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for experiencing the new weapon type added with Shadow of the Erdtree. It has high guard boost, allowing good stamina management when blocking attacks. The shield also has resistances to both physical and elemental damage types, making it a good almost all-around choice.

A "thrusting shield," or combined weapon and shield.
Enables the wielder to attack and guard simultaneously.

An armament once used in ritual combat performed to honor the Erdtree—a custom that had somehow remained within the realm of shadow.

Where to Find Dueling Shield in Elden Ring

The Dueling Shield weapon can be found at the following location:

Shadow Keep: From the Storehouse, First Floor site of grace, go North around the specimen pillar towards the stairs, and turn immediately left after going up them.
Keep going straight until you see another staircase to your right (immediately past the room that Sir Ansbach moves to).
Go to your left towards the large flight of stairs and go up them.
Sneak past or kill the Fire Knight you see to your right.
To his left you'll see a path. Go down it until you get to the bull-like specimen hanging from the ceiling.
Keep your eye to the left and you'll see a corpse with the shield and a small section of wall that will let you get to the shield.

Weapon Skill: Shield Strike
This weapon can be infused with Ashes of War
Can be buffed by Magic or Consumables
Dueling Shield can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones
Despite being a kind of shield, many ashes of war not usually applicable to shields can be applied to the Dueling Shield.
Though its default Ash of War is Shield Strike, it also comes with the actual Shield Strike Ash of War item equipped.
NOTE: As of Patch 1.12.3, Thrusting Shields stamina consumption when successfully guarding while attacking has been increased.

  kinda busted if im being honest. with no buffs other than the physick, i did not move an inch (no rolling, jumping or walking/running) and beat consort radahn. i did it as a challenge... it was not a challenge. guard countered my way to victory.

  I hate that the Carian Thrusting Shield is just a straight upgrade in terms of defense.
  
  It would have been much cooler if the dueling shield had higher guard boost, but still had lower physical damage reduction than the carian shield.

  Can they redo the animations from the ground up? And ya know, give it an accurate hitbox and remove the lunge? The speed to reach/lunge ratio gives this 5 feet of ghost range and the animations don’t actually tell you what it’s doing anyways. The jumping attack is actually invisible, it looks like you’re jumping with no attack but your opponent dies when you land.

  Well it’s not fun to use. It’s definitely not fun to fight. The animations don’t actually convey an attack or block and have absurd ghost range in pvp. In pve it’s extremely boring. Really cool idea but implemented in a really bad way.

  Build I cooked up with this thing is Heavy Infused Dueling Shield with Cragblade AoW, talismans are: Erdtree Favor +2, Two-Headed Turtle, Two-Handed Sword, and Greatshield, physick is Crimsonburst (to help off-set chip damage from blocking) and Greenburst. At 60 STR it hits 639 AR, with Cragblade it gos up to 735, and adding Golden Vow (incantation version) wih Cragblade also active bumps it up to 845. All while the weapon is two-handed, of course. Haven't put this build into practice much yet but seems promising. Marvelous

  Jumping heavies on dueling shields are insane. High damage, high poise dmg, and you have block frames after the attack you can roll out of. Combine that with the fact that jumping can easily avoid lower attacks and you have some situations where you can land a nice chunky jump attack on a boss mid-combo and they just can't do anything about it. Throw cragblade in the mix and you'll not only be doing big hurt but staggering often enough to top off the chip damage as well.

  The Carian shield stats are marginally higher, but the drip is worth it. I mean, the two weapons work exactly the same in practice, and if you're good with the deflecting tear you won't notice a difference. Use the one you like more!

  I know I can't be the only one upset that the Dueling Shield is in every way inferior to the Carian Thristing Shield. Theu should have given the the Dueling shield the higher physical resistance to the Dueling Shield and give the Carian Thrusting Shield superior Fire, Magic, and Holy resistance.

  wish that it had superior guard boost on normal R1s and the current or even reduced guard boost on blocking r1s - basically, reward trading into them riskily using only the block frames at the end of your attack, and punish just shield poking with it cos that's not anywhere near as fun and interesting.

  If you're having trouble against these weapons in PVP, don't bother with kick, keep a weapon in your back pocket that can use PIERCING FANG. The higher the ar of that weapon the better.
  
  The damage on piercing fang completely goes through shields so you will almost always win a trade with a dueling shield so long as you don't have pure caster levels of vigor and armor, even against scholar's shield users.
  
  Dueling shield users tend to be very cocky and just like to throw out attacks because they think they can block and trade with whatever tries to hit them, but piercing fang invalidates that completely. If they're smart, they'll switch it out to something else and you can fight them normally but otherwise, you should always win the war of attrition.

  Greatsword weight, with blocking ability of the heaviest Colossal Swords/Weapons, plus you deal mostly piercing damage with blocking frames.
  Yeah, this seems like a good weapon class, even if it is so anemic and lacking in variety. Personally I wish there were versions dedicated to the varying houses of Marika's children, but oh well.

  Even after the nerf, both thrusting shields are absolute top tiers in pvp. You can still tank an ugs swing or two greatsword swings without being guard broken, without any additional talismans. Smaller weapons barely tickle.

  Really cool but needs some changes. It’s doing 4-500 thrust dmg in pvp + counter hits along with invulnerability and momentum… should be doing identical damage to spears instead, which is about 220 dmg to a strength build. It would stilll be over powered but obnoxious DLC weapons are a marketing ploy right?

  Absolutly obliterated the Lord of Frenzy with this thing. This weapon is no joke. Charge Attacks are amazing, the amount of Ashes of War it can have are astonishing, can be buffed, has counter damage. This is by far the best new weapon catagory in the game and I hope that Fromsoftware moving forward keeps including this weapon

  if you're struggling against the final boss, this **** is insane with a weapon grease buff and stamina talismans, you take less stamina damage by just spamming L1 + R1 attacks and you can stack bleed or frost whilst doing it. best enjoyed with a mimic tear of course

  Combining this with the deflecting tear and it feels a lot like Sekiro (you can use katanas, but the poor guard boost means you'll get staggered). The guard counter does insane stagger damage, and you can put cragblade on it and drink the poise damage tear for some hilarious poise break memes.
  
  Only thing is, the Carian one seems straight up better for almost all builds if you can afford the slight extra weight and int levels, but maybe I'm missing something.

  Honestly an insane weapon. Has an amazing moveset (crouch pokes are crazy good), has guard frames on attacks, fantastic range and has a wide range of ashes you can toss on it. I've been using this on an arcane build w/ occult infusion and Poisonous Mist, and the swing on mist has deceptively long range. The only downside is that if you're using this weapon you really want to pump up your stamina, since you can get caught mid-swing and be guard broken. You'll want to also use the Greatshield Talisman to minimize the stamina damage you take. Also the guard counter isn't anything particularly special. That said, easily a favorite of the DLC.

  Better guide to finding it:
  From the "Storehouse, First floor grace" run North to the stairs past all the Shadow wizards and Vulgar Militiamen
  Ascend to the 2nd floor and head to the east side
  You will come to a corridor balcony with 2 Vulgar Militiamen.
  The shield is on a corpse against the wall to your left(east on the compass) over the balcony fence and across a narrow walkway

  How to be hellishly annoying in the arena with this beautiful thing:
  
  Put Barricade Shield AoW on it, but leave it as standard infusion. Equip the following talismans for maximum hilarity: Spear Talisman, Greatshield Talisman, Two-Handed Sword Talisman, and finally Two-Headed Turtle Talisman.
  
  These ingredients all come together to cook up a setup so perplexing for your opponent that they'll have no idea what to do against it. Only thing that really beats it is the reverse grip weapon with Blind Spot/Swift Slash AoW but those are busted af currently anyways. Oh, and maybe a greatshield user but you'll both just end up standing there staring at each other with nothing happening. No matter what your opponent does, they can't trade with you nor attack your shield at all without fear of being hit by that juicy counter-hit damage.

  After playing with it... Honestly, pretty good. It blocks enemy attacks while you're in your attack wind-ups, and does piercing damage, so it's practically tailor-made for the counter hit damage bonus. Throw on your spear talisman and it'll do pretty good damage. Throw on the Greatshield Talisman and stack stamina and you can really wail on enemies. Really changes a boss fight when you know you can just power through an attack and only take chip damage while taking a nice chunk outta them. Not that great for counter hits (as in, the attack after blocking) because of the damage & relatively low guard boost.
  Plus, you can stick thrusting ashes on it (I like Blood Tax, but Giant Hunt is a gimme). It's not OP, but it's definitely not bad. Probably gonna be a nightmare in PvP.

  Much easier to understand location: from the storehouse, first floor site of grace, proceed to a bridge on the third floor that leads to a group of vulgar milita. Then face southeast and you should see the shield over the railing.

  Attack-shield with stats compensating being able to attack and block: "fun detected!! cool thing trash as usual!!!" Attack-shield with stats of a weapon and a shield: "biggest cancer ever!! fromsoft no idea balance as usual!!!!"

  Was so hyped for this weapon and its a C scaling Dex weapon at +25 with worst blocking than un upgraded colossal weapons and worst blocking than half medium shields.

  Physical negation is 80, guard boost only about 60. I wouldn’t expect it to have 100 negation but in the very least it should have a a more than slightly better guard boost than the brass shield lol
