Very underrated weapon. The damage is very high on a strength build with this and the ash is actually very good. The +5 to all stats is great early but does fall off late game but you also get 5 seconds of increased poise. You can just tank through a ton of attacks and with axe talisman andd charge attack physick get off guaranteed heavy attacks.

Absurdly easy to get (by far the easiest boss that drops a weapon) and doesn't take that long to get enough strength to two hand it. This is one of the better speedrun weapons, especially for a mostly strength build.

I keep trying every other weapon, but this one is the one. strength focus build obvi

The BMF Sword... Looks good, has a badass story and an amazing skill works faster than Endure, makes it possible to trade with giants and dragons like a savage, not just cast but POISE-CAST a handful of very useful spells like dragon communion incantations to inflict rot and frostbite with ZERO investment. You get a nice little overall buff too.
- Anonymous
When you consider that the buff is basically free 40 extra levels for 60 seconds it's not too shabby.
I love this Weapon for PvE, when you meet the requirements the damage is just nasty + the AoW is really great damage wise since the Buff. Also for PvP the rolling r1 is nasty

The sword itself is lackluster AF especially for a "legendary armament" it's just a boring typical CGS and the greatsword itself is much bette option tbh.
But the AOW is extremely useful especially in pvp it's like having the godrick GR active for 60 seconds. Those extra stats really pay off well.

Y'know what I hate about this thing? When you use its skill and your character gets completely covered up by an entire row of status resistance bars for several seconds as your resistances adjust for your boosted stats. Not a big deal, but it still annoys me.

I wish this Sword was Given S Scaling in Strength cause its a Mainly Strength weapon and would've Highly Benefited from its Ash of War.

Pretty cool sword

was trying to farm those misbegotten in leyndell for the iron greatsword, got the idea to use this thing to increase my arcane stat. had no idea it also had the same effect as endure, made dealing with that massive group of misbegotten ganging up on me so much easier.

I like to just keep this in my pocket for the buff, especially when I use a weapon with a good spread of stat scaling.

Amazing weapon on a standard vigor, endurance, strength build. Somber smithing stones make this weapon easy to get to high levels around mid game.
Pair with godricks greatrune for overpowered stats (+defenses).
Pick up a heavy armor like tree sentinel and you are set.
Game actually gets too easy and simple this way.
Greatswords arent bread and butter in pvp though

Honestly great weapon for someone roleplaying as an 'anguished warrior' archetype, carrying the blades of his fallen brethren. I paired this was the fingerprint greatshield for my 'Last of the Knights of Plenty' character. This weapon goes very well with the frenzied flame ending imo. Very fun for strength builds overall, even if the weapon art is a bit boring but still neat thematically.

Im running wolverine build, 2 handin hookclaws cos i only have 1 so i cant dual wield. The buff from this affects the character not the weapon and so its a decent buff going into tough fights. It works with the buff from commander oneils spear aswell because while they both apply damage n protection buffs to your character not your weapon they apply it in different ways. The grafted sword increases your stats by 5 which increase your base damage while the rally from oneils spear just increase damage, mix this with a spell "flame grant me strength" n you got 3 very strong buffs, only 60 seconds but it takes my +23 claws from 320 to 580ish AR for some extra damage buff ust use beast roar ash for extra damage and give your heavy attack a combo just like your norm attack. Starting a boss with these 3 buffs + your flask buff and you chopping chunks of health in a few hits. I know the weapons are heavy but the buffs work, just equip em before the boss

The skill gives a 5 sec buff identical to endure, including dmg negation (45/40% in PvE/PvP) & ability to bounce back some attacks. Lasts longer than endure. Very useful for early game PvE and low level PvP with the huge stats buff. Two handed, with Radagon's soreseal and starscourge heirloom, you need only 17 str for it.

Not surprising, this used to be a reward from Godrick's Rune of remembrance at some point, and presumably his weapon of choice.
They probably went with the Axe of Godrick to more heavily emphasize on his ties to the Golden Lineage.

I forgot what patch 1.04 did for this weapon, we need more comments about that.
No, actually, this is ugly.
It's ash is impressive at all times, but it is just ugly.
When I saw someone using it I thought it was a club of some kind, made to look like a giant, elongated pinecone.
If it looked like the claymore hiding under all the grafted blades I might even use it.
As it stands, it will forever just be the thing I use to cast Law of Regression on my non-int characters, for the Goldmask quest.

The Oath of Vengeance skill was updated in the 1.07 patch. According to its page, the attribute buff now lasts 60 seconds and the poise buff lasts 5 seconds. It may also prevent stagger from the hemorrhage/frostbite effect.

I wish buffs to your vigor or mind stats didn't require you to drink a flask immediately after just to take advantage of them. It would make rune arcs less clunky too since you wouldn't have to rest at the grace a second time when throwing yourself at bosses.

I would have been cool if this weapon did strike dmg with bleed buildup, kind of like a flail or morningstar

I wonder how one manages NOT to deal strike damage with this hell of a peace of iron. With a kinetic energy required to swing a thing it should rather crash skulls and bones right away making cutting flesh that covers them a mere side effect.

This weapon looks like it should do bleed because of all the blades cruelly put together

Is Strength the only stat of importance to you? Do you enjoy sending the small and weak flying with the lightest of attacks? Does crushing poise like the pathetic stat it is excite you? Then this is the weapon for you my friend! With B str. scaling at higher upgrade levels and the ability to bring even the largest of foes to their pathetic knees in recognition of your true superiority this weapon will have no problems carrying you to your final destination in overwhelmingly crushing POWER! This thing pairs well with the turtle charm for faster stamina regen, winged sword insignia for MORE DAMAGE with successive attacks. I also recommend the Champions armor set and the Lone Wolf ashes for that truely barbarian conquer vide but your best friend wolves will hunt down and destroy poise even faster.

Haven't played since doing 2 playthroughs right after launch, with the patch that buffed speed and guard for colossal weapons, is this one more viable (as in you can actually get away with doing something other than jump R2 spam) and fun than it used to be?
- Anonymous
The buff is excellent early game but falls off pretty hard in mid game.
- Anonymous

If you're doing a pure strength build like I was don't fully upgrade this weapon. The Ruins greatsword outclasses this weapon in damage completely and the buff this weapons gives tapers off pretty hard when you reach the soft caps for certain stats. I imagine it might be good for a quality build or some other duel strength build but I haven't tried it.

I just realized it's made out of several different swords, I though it was some rock spikes or something
The blades even kinda look like raven feathers, hmmm. Would’ve been really cool if the current AoW buffs could be augmented via a charged R2 into a projectile cluster that shot them all at the target for a proc bleed, and then they get recalled back to the sword after hit (or regardless). Maybe they could even make a raven cawing sound while they attack.
- Anonymous
i never did bother thinking about this specific legendary weapon but i was thinking about it and realized that it gets its name because it's made out of several different blades, similar to grafting only without severing limbs
I am pretty sure the ash of war doesn't actually increase poise, just stats. You can find the effect in SpEffectParam -> 1850 (found the ID by using the Hexinton CE table effect logger). I looked at the values and it just increases the stats, not poise, but I may be wrong here. Needs actual testing.

Perfect weapon for a light roll strength build. You get your poise via the weapon’s skill.

It's tough to beat this in terms of raw damage. Unless I'm fighting a quick enemy, I end up using this at +9, or Ordovis' Greatsword +9/Death's Poker +9 most of the time. The poise damage on it is crazy, so, along with the high damage and the AoW, as long as you can get 1 hit in, you can usually just chain stagger them to death if they survive the first blow or 2. Also can be incredible for Crit attacks. When I hit a Golem with a crit, it does almost 11K damage, which is bonkers. Pump your END up enough to wear something like Tree Sentinal, Radahn's Lion or Crucible Tree/Axe set and still be able to mid roll, and you are an absolute tank.

For everyone reading: This is the best scaling STARTING str weapon for that strong build playthrough you've been putting off.
Slap on five somber stones early and use the (relatively) low wielding reqs to start smashing your way through the game.

I would have expected this to have some bleed effect on it just going by how it looks

Ahh, thinking back to the beginning of my first playthrough, young, dumb, and inexperienced. First souls game. Sold this to merchant kale for a whopping 200 runes. Thankfully it cane be acquired early in the game

Been toying with this with my new Str. character since I blew past it the first time. the 1.04 base damage upgrade is pretty huge: It going up to near 400 raw damage before scaling compared to Ruin GS's 303 isn't something to overlook, and considering you can get it very early in the game without dealing with a particularly nasty duo makes it more of a contender.
I'm...mixed on the skill. The stat boost and poise is handy for squeezing out more damage out of the thing, especially early on, but there's clearly better alternatives. Still, if you're looking for an early game Somber Str. weapon this will more than certainly do the job.

This is the ultimate twink weapon to kill low level invaders btw. You can get absurd Defense values (which reduces incoming damage by a flat amount) by stacking a number of bonus stat buffs.
1) Start with the Samurai class
2) Rush Strength Knot Crystal Tear (Stormhill) and Starscourge Heirloom (Fort Gael). These will give you the stats to wield the GBG without leveling anything up.
3) Go head for Morne castle, picking up a +1 somberstones near the Night Cavalry at the bridge, the morningstar near Irina, and a +2 somberstone near jellyfish at the beach. Also while you're running around, don't forget to pick up Golden Seeds, Sacred Tears, Lift keys, and other such key items.
4) Skip straight to Castle Morne bossfight and kill the Leonine Misbegotten. Receive the GBG as your reward.
5) Upgrade your weapon to +1, +2 at most for pvp search range purposes. *Remember this build is better the lower level you are.
6) Kill Greydoll using the Morningstar for a free 70k souls (Route: 3rd church of Marika teleporter -> Bestial Sanctum -> Lenne's Rise spiritspring-> Minor Erdtree spiritspring -> and you're right at Greydoll & Fort Faroth). Level Vigor to 30, Strength as much as you can (probably around 20 at this point).
Optional Step: pick up Radagon's Soreseal from the fort. I don't use this because of the increased damage taken, but it does give you another +5 str, dex, vig and end, if you want to stay even lower level than what I am suggesting)
8) Kill Margit for your second talisman slot. You can now equip that Radagon Soreseal if you want.
9) Skip through Stormveil using the main gate (it might take a couple tries to learn the ballista timing but the grace is right there. don't worry about dying) then kill Godrick with Nepheli's help for his rune & rememberance. Use the 40k total to level your str to 28 or 23, depending on whether you want to equip Radagon's Soreseal. Remember, this build is better the lower level you are so don't level just because you have excess runes.
10) Go back to the starting gate and access the Divine Tower of Limgrave to activate your Godrick's rune. With this rune and Oath of Vengeance active, you will essentially be at level 120 in terms of Defense. Take a few hits from some random mobs and laugh at the absurdly low damage you take. But you're not quite done yet.
11) Next go grab the Dexterity-Knot Crystal Tear in Liurnia on an island near the Scenic Isle grace. While you're at it, go grab the Two Fingers Heirloom Talisman (optional for more stats) in the Purified Ruins as well as the Sacred Tears and Golden Seeds in the area.
12) Sprint through Raya Lucaria Academy & kill Radagon's Wolf and Renella. Use the runes to buy out Boggart's stock of Boiled Prawn.
13) Speak to the Fingers to receive your third talisman slot. Speak to Gideon so that Nepheli spawns in Roundtable Hold. Speak to Nepheli for the Arsenal Talisman (optional for equipload). Then go to the lower level of Roundtable hold and kill the invader for the Taunter's Tongue.
Congratulations, you've done it. Now you have a build that, at level ~40, has Defense equivalent to a character that's 105-130 levels higher. Accessible, cheap, and efficient equipment that you might want to wear for defenses are the Chain Armor set, the Knight Armor set, and the Scaled Armor set. Add on the Boiled Prawn, and you're nigh unkillable. If you want another stat raising talisman, Millicent's Prosthesis-Wearer Talisman is the next easiest to obtain. You could also go all the way to Godfrey and get your last talisman slot as well as access to Boiled Crab, but that's a bit tough with a +2 special weapon.
Now all that's left to do is to activate your Taunter's Tongue at the Academy Gate Town grace (no gank squad pls, you don't need it) and murder the poor unsuspecting invaders that are simply following Varre's orders. Crouch poke and trade your way to victory.
Someone needs to mod every blade on this to be a mini godrick, so we can get godrick the grafted blade greatsword
Lobosjr took this all the way from nearly when you get it to the very end. He killed Malenia with it. I can see why, with those 1,200 damage jump attacks.
Someone needs to mod every blade on this to be a mini godrick, so we can get godrick the grafted blade greatsword

At 74 str two handed the damaged increased by about 60-70 for me due to the buff. Pretty solid and rivals the greatsword in terms of damage now, as well as having great blocking stats for a weapon.
- Anonymous
Yo man, we heard you like swords, so we put swords on your sword.
- Anonymous
Just so you know, the activation of this skill grants you extra poise (aside from the bonus poise during 30s). It allowed me to stand against a Fire Prelate's jumping attack. Aka you can use it to gain Hyperarmor. Also you can use the activation to poise through even troll attacks. This ash of War is basically Endure with a 30s Godrick rune and Poise bonus, but w/o Endure/Stamp's Dmg negation. The cast time of this is also pretty fast.
does anyone know if the buff still lasts if you have it on off hand/ switch to another weapon ?
- Anonymous
I still say the skill needs a buff to last longer. Should be 1-3 minutes not 30 seconds. We're talking about a non damage skill for a legendary weapon
