Carian Sorcery Sword is a Thrusting Sword in Elden Ring. It was added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Carian Sorcery Sword scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for players looking for a weapon that can also serve as a catalyst for spells.
One of the Carian royal family's glintstone swords.
A smaller piercing sword with a slender blade.
Formerly used by the Carian knights of old before the full refinement of their sorcerous combat techniques, this armament functions as a catalyst for glintstone sorcery when executing strong attacks.
Where to Find Carian Sorcery Sword in Elden Ring
The Carian Sorcery Sword weapon can be found at the following location:
- In a chest that can be found after dropping down into Castle Ensis from the cliff just west of the waterfall to the west of the Highroad Cross Site of Grace in Scadu Altus. [Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link] [Video Link]
Elden Ring Carian Sorcery Sword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Impaling Thrust
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Can't be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables
- Carian Sorcery Sword can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones
- This weapon gives up R2s in favor of sorceries in your spell slot, a guard counter can still be performed by pressing R1/R2 together, and when held in your offhand L2 will cast sorceries instead.
- It is the most powerful spell catalyst at precisely 41 Intelligence if fully upgraded.
- Demi-Human Queen's Staff is marginally better at 40 Int and under
- Academy Glintstone Staff is superior between 42 to 68 Int.
- Carian Regal Scepter is superior for players at 69 Int or above.
- It can be used in conjunction with Carian Slicer, Carian Greatsword, Carian Piercer, Adula's Moonblade, Gavel of Haima, Shatter Earth and Rock Blaster as the alternatives of strong attack melee to further expand its melee moveset.
- There is a prevalent bug with this weapon regarding non-magic damaging spells. The Physical Damage from certain spells scale off the Strength and Dexterity stats of this weapon rather than its Intelligence stat. These spells will underperform when using this weapon as a catalyst.
- NOTE: Patch 1.12.3: The scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.
- NOTE: Patch 1.13: Increased poise damage of dual wield attacks of all Thrusting Swords (in PVP)

Sorcery Scaling is based on the Int stat. The Int of the the character with the staff equipped at the time of posting the Sorcery Scaling is hidden and not seeable without tools. This will help to give a general idea of what catalysts are better at various Int levels until MAX is achieved.
The Sorcery Scaling displayed on this table shows Minimum Requirement and Intelligence 80 as xx-yy.

I would rather have the spell casting action as the ash, impaling thrust isn't one the best choices for a thrusting sword, and the inability to change it is the salt on the wound. All the heavies provide a more reliable way to stagger bigger enemies and they also add more to the moveset versatility in general
- Anonymous
This is the best staff/weapon choice at 41 intelligence btw. Umbasa.
- Anonymous
Just a quick note: you can technically use a jumping R2 with this weapon but only if you do two in quick succession while having a sorcery that cannot be cast in air equipped. This really only works while falling down from heights but thought I'd mention it.
- Anonymous
you're tell me I spend 2 playthrough playing as a Carian spellknight and I miss THE sword that is also a staff??

"There is a prevalent bug with this weapon regarding non-magic damaging spells. The Physical Damage from certain spells scale off the Strength and Dexterity stats of this weapon rather than its Intelligence stat. These spells will underperform when using this weapon as a catalyst."
Has this been fixed? Or are we thinking they did this intentionally as a balancing mechanism? It would arguably fit the theme also.

i put on a buncha carian sorceries like carian piercer n stuff like moonblade on and then a buncha ranged ones including glintstone arc
next thing i know i got a sword that shoots laser beams
i honestly dc if this thing don' got the highest damage, this shi looks cool asf so im using it
11/10 would recommend

Almost didnt pick this up bc i saw so many negative opinions but im glad i did and it helps if you don't think about it like a sword that shoots spells but more like a staff with utility (can critical unlike other catalysts, can shield poke and has an ash of war that's way more useful than spinning weapon on a staff) if you want better sorcery scaling then use a dedicated catalyst but this is literally utility the weapon, it's good not everything needs to be overpowered
- Anonymous
You CAN see the sorcery scaling in game if you compare it to a catalyst.
- Anonymous
I don’t know a lot about Magic & sorcery scaling since I usually never use any spells, but if high-cost spells have a larger increase/decrease in damage than low-cost depending on sorcery scaling, then my thinking is that this weapon, with it’s lower sorcery scaling, would be most efficiently used mixing regular thrusting sword attacks with low-cost fast spells as the damage drop-off on spells would be more negligible in comparison to high-cost spells. Not to mention this provides a perfect opportunity to make use of the melee sorcery options.
Since I am a devoted medium parry shield user, this weapon piqued my interest as it allows magic casting off of a functional weapon while I keep my shield - I don’t have to spend FP to kill things, but I can easily mix it in if I want & when I want.
However, I would probably never use this in PvE since a simple axe does the job well in every scenario. This thing has slight-of-hand potential in PvP, that’s what makes it very interesting
- Anonymous
Why does this have 282 sorcery scaling at 80 int. It should be 350 ish since the actual utility for this sword is so low. You can equip a staff and do everything you would do with this sword except for riposte, which also doesn't matter since 3 carian slicers will do more damage than a riposte with this thing. Some staffs also boost spells so it is even worse.
- Anonymous
sorcery damage is weaker then more staves, however its just like the staff of the great beyond sacrifice a bit of power for convenience. That doesnt make it weak its actually not a bad choice at all.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I'm ok with utility and power trade offs I just wish the AOW didn't over ride other AOWs. I wanted to pair with a shield and use its AOW instead
- Anonymous
it cannot be used to apply scholars armament to your left hand weapon, even though you can apply scholars shield :/
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
There is no good reason this thing can't swap AOW's; let me put the cool new Carian ash you gave me on the Carian sword sorcery sword you gave me!
- Anonymous
not exactly sure why this isn't upgraded using somber smithing stones instead of the normal ones seeing as you can't change the AoW or infuse it, but then again fromsoft has always kinda played fast and loose with the upgrade mats for their weapons.
- Anonymous
we were close to getting the DS2 Blue Flame again, but sadly it not being able to get weapon buffs and only gettting one of them per game cycle keeps it from matching the greatness of it's ancestor
- Anonymous
The Spellblade set DOES, in fact, boost the AoW on this sword. Spellblades rejoice.
- Anonymous
i think this makes spells have a little more stance damage because my carian phalanx cast with this knocks fallingstar beasts out of their charge but doesn't when i use a staff, still could be wrong tho. long story short just bring back the blue flame it was such a cool weapon

power stance this on the left with frozen needle on the right and you become the ultimate battle mage

i wish it had the phantom dex boost, 40 is op but at least 10 would be nice

Very cool, very fun. The weapon damage on an 80 Int build is great, very reasonable compared to Magic-Infused Thrusting Swords of similar length. The sorcery scaling BADLY needs an adjustment. Just for comparison, DS3's Demon Scar (hybrid curved sword/catalyst) was within 5% of the pure catalyst at soft caps (40 int/40 faith); at 80 Int, this rapier has ~22% less scaling than the Carian Regal Scepter. If we could bump that up to ~10% difference, it would make it a LOT more playable.
- Anonymous
I believe the mean that this thing is bad, and not only is that not true if anything it's amazing. Think of it as a staff that can light attack, guard counter, riposte, and shoot out impaling thrust at any time. This is amazing utility and you are going to want to choose spells that will synergize with this. So melee range spells or spells that excel at stance breaking. This will be a bad option if you're trying to pew pew enemies down from range, but if you are doing that as your primary strategy a weapon catalyst is already pointless anyway. It's also worth noting that 300 scaling on an optimized sorcery build is still good damage, more than good enough to beat the game. And when it comes to spells that rely primarily on frostbite for their damage they will be just as good on this.

PvP/Arena Build Below
At level 125 you can create a powerful Battlemage/Spellsword class with mixups and spell variety.
Astrologer Starting Class:
55 Vigor
16 Mind
24 Endurance
12 Strength (for stylish Wolf Crest Shield)
40 Dexterity (equip Radagon Icon for max Cast Speed)
41 Intelligence (Spell Buff Softcap)
7 Faith
9 Arcane
With Miriam's Vanishing you can follow up into Gavel of Haima or Carian Greatsword/Piercer and have an instant poke spell like Swift Shard or Ambush Shard. Alternatively, you can go for 35 Dex and 17 Strength for the Carian Thrusting Shield and Dark Moon Greatsword, while using Millicent's Prosthesis to reach 40 Dex (if you really wanna min/max like me). You can also use the Main-Gauche Magic infused in the offhand for a powerstanced moveset and a convenient parry. I have to say this is one of the most fun playstyles I've tried in Elden Ring, mostly from missing weapon/catalyst weapons from DS3, oh how I miss you Heysel Pick <3

Unlimited potential held back by ER’s single spell slot mechanic. I find I fumble far too much on controller to swap spells on the fly to make this weapon worthwhile. If ER had a control mapping similar to Lords of the Fallen this would be a lot of fun.
- Anonymous
just infuse the godskin stitcher to cold or something and have a staff in ur offhand, same thing as this but ur attacks and spells both do like 50% more damage
- Anonymous

This things r1 can combo into the first hit of carian slicer BTW. You can get big damage for the cost of 4fp in like half a second. Super fun

Have a 50/50 dex/int build themed around gravity, decided to try this thing out powerstanced with a cold estoc since its spellboost at 50 int isn't very different from the astrologer staff.
I would have been really happy with it except for the bugged scaling on non magic damage spells, I kept using blades of stone for like 1.1k damage for all three bursts and being really confused when gravitational missile did 1.3k uncharged. Rock sling was even worse, it was barely reaching 600 damage for all three rocks while the regular staff got at least 1.2k damage.
Other than that, it works very well as an offhand for a multi hit dual thrusting sword build, if you don't mind giving up your main hand's ash of war. It doesn't do terrible damage considering it's dual nature and has a 110 crit modifier if you care about that.
I still use it some, but until the spell scaling bug gets fixed I'm probably going to be using my regular staff a lot more.

If folks are worried about magic damage of spells not being great, I use both the graven talismans and both the godfrey and radagon icon for faster casting of charged spells and the damage buff. Yes, that means that the talisman slots are all taken up and there are probably meta options that folks are deeply uncomfortable giving up, but the versatility of having a bunch of spells for all ranges of attack as well as being able to hold a shield in the left hand that can be buffed with Scholar's Shield (I use the wolf shield one you can find in Ensis - 73 guard boost at +25) is fun
- Anonymous
This sword is so fun to use. Being able to cast from an attack into Carian Slicer or Piercer with a follow-up Gavel of Haima is so cool. Great for mix ups, but also very demanding to play strategically, which is part of the fun. I also have Eternal Darkness to deal with ranged magic and Magic Shield to make fighting in melee or against heavy hitting weapons viable. I haven't gotten Miriam's Vanishing yet, but I think that would be such a cool final addition to the prepared spells. The closest possible analogue to playing an Eldritch Knight from DnD, which puts the roleplay icing on the cake.
- Anonymous
I kinda wish you could infuse this thing, something like Glintblade Phalanx could be helpful, especially if you like cleaner spell rotations.
- Anonymous
You should be able to enchant this weapon like the blue flame from DS2!!
- Anonymous
why do you need a sword catalyst if he worse than a Carian knights sword as a sword and worse than Demi-human Queen staff as a catalyst?
- Anonymous
Wish this could buff itself with Scholar's Armament, and that the Ash of War was something like "Carian Sorcery" so that you'd still have access to a full move set.
- Anonymous
I really wish this weapon could just TELL US how much Sorcery Scaling it does
- Anonymous
I dont see a lot of people talking about it, but impaling thrust is on it for a lore reason. Lorewise, this weapon was made before the invention of any of the magic ashes of war, instead the magic ashes of war were modeled after this weapon. Example, glintstone phalanx plus impaling thrust is basically a rudimentary form of glintstone phalanx aow.
- Anonymous
Almost 100 different weapons added, yet you couldn't give us more than one weapon catalyst?
Honestly, I'd absolutely adore this weapon if it had better dex scaling
- Anonymous
why +25 tho? there are already plenty of +25 upgrade path. also whoever found this from +10 to +25 thing he did a bad job
- Anonymous
This thing's ash of war should've been Carian Retaliation. On off hand, would've been a catalyst for casting and parrying.
- Anonymous
This weapon needs a rework. I specked a build for this thinking it may be interesting, especially in conjunction with weapon sorceries. But it’s underwhelming in every regard.
Its base damage is trash, should’ve been a thrusting straight sword moveset instead of rapier.
Second, the spell scaling is is trash.
Thirdly, and most importantly, the weapon art L2 shoulve been the spell cast.
Without an r2 for guard counters or jump attacks you may as well use a staff with higher spell scaling.
disappointed this weapon could’ve been so based..
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Cant guard counter properly as im on pc and using keyboard mouse -_-'
- Anonymous
this thing looks so bad (mainly because of the oversized hilt imo), and it only doing thrust attacks kinda kills it for me
- Anonymous
Like Staff of Wisdom from DS2, many spells cast from a much higher point, namely the tip of the blade. Because of that you are able to sometimes hide behind cover and still get some spells off. The opposite is also true though, where if certain enemies are too low to the ground or too close to you, it may whiff entirely. On a completely separate note, I think Fromsoft was kind of forced to have the weapon catalyst of this game be attached to a thrusting sword since there are quite a few spells where you hold the entire pole of the staff and thrust it into the ground. This would look odd on something like a Straight Sword or Hammer like we had in DS3.
- Anonymous
At 45 int, it's not far from academy Glintstone in terms of scaling, can use in main hand with offhand staff of loss for good spacing assuming your PVP opponent is underpoised it'll keep em on their toes. Niche battle mage tool for dex/int
- Anonymous
Why doesnt this thing have aow Glintblade Phalanx? Like I 100% dont understand why it doesnt have that.
Also, drop the magic damage(add spell power instead), allow the thing to be buffed. So we can use Frozen Armament and Scholars Armament on it, even lighting and poison armaments if you want. Should Buff Armament Skills.
- Anonymous
Would be cool if there’re more weapons that serve as both catalyst and melee armaments. Might be quite broken but changeable AOW will be nice.
- Anonymous
DEX scaling should be C minimum and it absolutely needs to boost carian sword or glintblade sorceries.
- Anonymous
Ok I get the disappointment I see in the comments here, but honestly this weapon can be really fun if you stop focusing on damage only. Versatility is where it shines.
I'm using it on my carian knight full int buid, with a magic infused main-gauche in my left hand for parry and the unique power stance moveset.
- R1 for quick poke
- L1 hits surprisingly hard (especially jumping L1 , which hits 3 times at closer range)
- L2 for parry, most people won't expect it on that kind of build + 110 crit boost hits hard. Save it for R1 spammer and good reads.
- R2 is your trump card to keep them on their toes. It's like an ash of war you can change on the go mid fight. Depending on the situation you can extend and mix your moveset. Slicer, piercer, greatsword ...
It takes some time to get used to, but eventually you have access to one of the most versatile and varied melee moveset , and most importantly ... IT'S FUN !
- Anonymous
impaling thrust carries this thing so hard. no point in even using spells on it
- Anonymous
It's criminal that this thing doesn't scale Carian sword sorceries higher. It should include DEX in the scaling of all melee based spells. Like Carian Piercer/ Greatsword/Slicer or the even the Hammer spell. So long as it's not a ranged projectile with maybe the exception of the Lorreta bow spells this should have spell scaling on DEX.
- Anonymous
why is this so bad? this is only good if you are a melee build with small amount of inteligence
- Anonymous
Not being able to break 300 sorcery scaling at 99 int is a crime.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This weapon Physical to Magic damage ratio should be 30/70, same with blocking with it considering it's made from Glintstone. It should also have the same scaling as the Regal Scepter but that would be too OP, so having the same sor scaling as Academy Glintstone Staff is fine IMO. It should also be infusable but without changing the affinity, but with only Magic or Cold AoW and the physical ones (piercing fang, repeating thrust, endure etc)
- Anonymous
Behold! The only Int weapon in this entire 40$ DLC! A worse and lamer version of something base DS3 had four of!
- Anonymous
Idea to buff this:
+Rogier Rapier's Charge Attacks
+Ash of War is the Spell Cast
+Make it a somber weapon (should have been from the start)
+Innately faster casting speed maybe?
- Anonymous
My biggest gripe with this sword is how incredibly unnatural it feels for me to press both R1 and R2 simultaneously if you use it with a shield to block counter. Wish they made it keep the heavy attack and change the AOW to the button to cast spells instead.
- Anonymous
I pair this with the carian thrusting shield and use scholars armament. Now i have a mage who can use spells from afar, or block and poke from close up, or miriam vanishing into you and bonk you with haima havel, or a suprise shield crash! Most fun i've had as a sorcerer in arena
- Anonymous
I like it!
It isn't exactly what I wanted, but I like it. Personally, I wish we had a dagger and a spear that was a catalyst too
- LOOKING AT YOU, BARBED STAFF-SPEAR, incantations could have been PERFECT for you especially with the new ones added in SOTE- but it's really nice to have a decent rapier and a convenient vehicle for carian sorceries and whatnot.
Delightful for spellblades too. So, not quite what I was hoping, but it's nice to have in the game.

- Anonymous
Kinda crazy how even S scaling for INT can't even save this weapon, I guess the terrible base AR just sets it back too much.
Even at 99 INT it still gets lower AR than a magic infused Antspur (551 vs 588 with rot), while also having lower sorcery scaling than an Academy Glintstone Staff (302 vs 373). The basic Rapier even has slightly more AR when infused for magic, and that gets the benefit of 130 crit modifer.
It's worse at being a magic thrusting sword than every other magic infusable thrusting sword, and worse at being a staff than an easily obtainable midgame level staff.
- Anonymous
honestly i wish this thing was better, but as it is i'd rather just have a magic infused rapier with a staff offhand. i'm sure there's some use out there in a spellblade build or something, but as it is it reminds me more of the cleric's candlestick than the heysel pick or demon scar.
- Anonymous
Why does this weapon trash the spell damage of spells like gravity spells? Is it a bug?
- Anonymous
I kinda think this weapon should have kept its R2’s, and the ash of war should have been uniquely “Catalyst: Sorcery” or something like that, make the thing upgrade with sombers and be done with it.
Seems like the Serpentbone Katana though imo, where it was potentially meant to take any ash of war and infusions, but was deemed too powerful and was hastily nerfed before release, keeping its regular smithing stone upgrade requirements while locking in its placeholder AoW.
- Anonymous
so basically a spellblade build but the spells are bad (low sorc scaling) and the blade is bad (thrusting swords is one of the worst weapon classes)
- Anonymous
For some reason it doesn't do much damage using rock sling? Other sorceries do okay damage, it's just rock sling doing poor damage? I'm dealing around 168 damage to the dancing women at Windmill Village at +13 and 63 intelligence and Graven-School Talisman. Can someone confirm?
- Anonymous
Fun fact: if you use this with a shield and attack while blocking, that counts for activating Carian Slicer's faster initial cast after a different attack feature, a scenario unique to this weapon.
- Anonymous
I actually like how the spells do damage now with this sword after the new patch updates. Made me do an entire build around it.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
When you use this to cast spells that use the bottom of the staff, like Fleeting Microcosm or Shatter Earth, there's a little extra animation where your character spins the sword around into a reverse grip so the spell uses the blade of the sword instead of the pommel. I just thought that was a neat little bit of attention to detail.
- Anonymous
love this game and the dlc but this weapon makes me realise how much of a stepback elden ring was, like really? a single weapon catalyst? dark souls 3 had 4 in the base game and 2 more with dlcs, also no int + faith infusion for whatever reason and to add on top of all that, reduce multiplayer limit and no covenant.
- Anonymous
I'm having so much fun with this on my sword and board build
- Anonymous
Hmm. A thrusting sword that replaces R2 with spell casting & has a good PvP Ash of War... But does it actually work in PvP?
- Anonymous
i wish this could have ashes changed, i was looking forward to carian sovereignty on this thing
- Anonymous
really said that you cant put aow on this, makes it so much more irrelevant than it otherwise wouldve been

do not use magma or death sorceries with it. the lack of faith scaling should be obvious lol

at 80 int the carian regal scepter does about 50% higher damage from spells. The testing I did the spell greatblade phalanx did 906 dmg with the carian regal staff, and 594 dmg with this sword (600 +50% = 900). But I think a cool thing you can do with this is powerstance it with antspur reaper in the main hand, Switch to antspur reaper just to cast seppuku ash of war with poison affinity then switch back to this. Then you have a powerstance dual rapier that procs bleed, poison, rot, and has the abillity to cast spells that can proc frost. You could theoretically proc all 4 status effects on a boss for the memes. Your magic damage will be low but you can use terra magica to boost your melee damage by about 30% (while you stand in it), greatblade phalanx / rock sling for lots of poise damage, or carian retaliation to parry melee and spells.

Ooooh, a weapon that can have multiple "ashes of war". This will be great for PvP in the hands of the right player

You need more than basic math skills to be good at PvP & PvE

Sorcery scaling HAS to be low, or this weapon would be broken in PvP. Think about it - Which does more damage? 1) A staff with high scaling that is a dead giveaway that a spell will be cast and will result in the spell likely being dodged in PvP. I.e. 0 damage because the spell misses. 2) A sword with low scaling that allows decent damage on regular hit, & the included surprise factor that a spell can be cast at any time and allows even the more typically dodgeable spells to land

Works best as an offhand rapier with larger weapons. Sacrifices your AoW for some long range spells.

Don’t use heavy damage spells. This one is for the weaker spells

So if I were to use this with Carian slicer, would I hit with the spell & the weapon?

this doesn't even deserve the "close enough" treatment, what an insult to blue flame
nice to have the blue flame back after being stuck with candle sticks in ds3. its not the best but definitely a fun and interesting way to play or if you wanted to be weird maybe give this to a mimic tear?
