Carian Sorcery Sword is a Thrusting Sword in Elden Ring. It is a brand new Thrusting Sword in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Carian Sorcery Sword scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for __goodfor__.
One of the Carian royal family's glintstone swords. A smaller piercing sword with a slender blade. Formerly used by the Carian knights of old before the full refinement of their sorcerous combat techniques, this armament functions as a catalyst for glintstone sorcery when executing strong attacks.

Unless the sorcery being used as a AoW on the left hand is scaled and treated like a ash, this thing is kind of useless.
- Anonymous
The only uses for this sword I can see are the few sorceries that don't rely on spell scaling that much. Examples include frostbite spells exclusively for the status, night maiden's mist, scholar's shield, and the new sorcery that sucks in nearby targets. For those spells, this thing isn't too bad. It definitely needs a buff, no doubts there, but it isn't completely useless, just underpowered currently.
- Anonymous
This weapon can actually guard counter by pressing R1 immediately before pressing R2 during the guard counter window. Not that it matters since the thing is ass right now, but hey ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Anonymous
Looks really good but its actually pretty bad comparing to any rapier or staff...
- Anonymous
Man, if only this was infusable with ahes of war. Would have made the perfect oportunity for a carian knight build to put carian sovereignty on. Also would have made sorcery scaling quite interesting. I mean, its a regular smithing stone weapon, why cant I infuse it? No, instead we are stuck with this lame impaling thrust. Worst part about this weapon for me.
- Anonymous
Too many people shitting on this weapon that literally carried me through the dlc as a mage
- Anonymous
Carian Piercer, into Gavel of Haima, into Abdula Moonblade, fully charge a Canon of Haima, chase down with a Carian Slicer or another Piercer ftw <3
- Anonymous
Half staff and half sword but it has the power of one third of a staff and one third of a sword.
- Anonymous
Some thoughts:
- it’s not a somber stone upgrade weapon, so let us change the AoW!
- add proper sorcery scaling so this is reasonably competitive with staffs (eg 10% worse instead of 70%)
- create more weapons like this, including greatswords and hammers, and do the same for incantations
That would truly be fantastic!
- Anonymous
Why's so many shitting on this weapon? It's pretty fun to use.
- Anonymous
At +25 with 45 DEX and 60 INT, this sword does 406 damage with carina slicer while an UNUPGRADED glintstone staff does 410 damage.
This is either a bug or reinforces how bad this weapon is at both a catalyst and blade for a melee INT build.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Sounds like this was designed around using utility spells like Miriam's vanishing or Thop's barrier.
- Anonymous
Equipping this on your off-hand will make it actually use sorceries as your Ash of War. Which is weird considering in your main-hand it overrides your strong attack, and staffs in your off-hand always cast sorcery with LB (block/offhand) button. Something is definitely bugged with this weapon.
Maybe it's actually supposed to be an Ash of War sorcery thing and not the strong attack like it currently overrides. Since that's how it operates when equipped in your off-hand, and otherwise seems to have no functional scaling. Spaghetti code?
- Anonymous
Haven't built for this, yet, but going by the comments, the intent of this weapon seems to genuinely be "sword that does magic tricks" rather than "staff that goes BONK real good." In other words, intended as a convenience for spellblades who are only slightly into that nerd stuff and prefer to shank people with metal over glintstone. That drastically limits the number of usable sorceries, but there's a few niches that can be filled.
Scholar's Shield is the obvious one. Already wielding a weapon, scaling irrelevant? Basically perfect for this sword.
Any frostbite spell, though obviously Freezing Mist or Glintstone Icecrag would be more economical than Ranni's Moon or Adula's Moonblade. You'd be going for the debuff more than the damage proc.
Gravity Well and Night Maiden's Mist. You want enemies in close, and with a shield, you have an easier time keeping them in your clouds.
And the one I really want to try, Carian Retaliation. Specifically because not having to juggle a shield, staff, and weapon means having easy access to both Carian Retaliation AND Golden Parry AND actually being able to immediately follow up with a physical attack, all at the same time. And if CR doesn't work, well, Thops' Barrier is right there, and already works better as a spell than an ash.
- Anonymous
Y’all saying it’s bad are using it wrong. It has split scaling. try hitting the soft caps on dex and int and the damage will be much better. For the convenience of using a staff and sword in one, this weapon is a beast if used properly.
- Anonymous
This seems pretty bad statistically until you realize its heavy attack takes precedent over skills, so using it in the left hand allows you to maintain a dual wield rapier moveset while also having sorcery casting ability. Combined with a strong right hand rapier like estoc (with its sweeping heavies) or rogier's (with its fast, double-poke heavies), you can have a robust moveset of thrusting and sweeping attacks with things like carian slicer supplementing your right hand and dual wield movesets.
I'm excited to try a build that uses this synergy
- Anonymous
they need to make this a ash of war, would make builds so much more diverse, should have double katanas or scythes and still shoot spells! would be amazing! need to make whatever weapon its attached to with some scaling at least!
using this in off hand and the frozen needle in the other would have been a sick playthrough experience! but they messed up not having a sorcery scaling stat or better making it a ash of war :( plz buff from soft....... and add dlss and sort the frame rate out in general. hat to turn off rtx as my 4070tis was struggling, even tho ive done the whole main game at 1440p max rtx and settings, playing a 4k max settings rtx off now and its running fine, i didn't buy a £800 gpu to not use rtx tho
- Anonymous
Terrible for PVE. With how much the HP and poise of enemies are so insanely jacked up, the gimmick is not worth it.

one unique property of this sword I've noticed is that spells start up HIGHER than when I use other spells. for example i normally offhand my carian regal scepter for my great ocular bubbles or magic glintblades, and sometimes the spells fail if I'm sniping because a wall is too tall for me to get on top of OR i'd be forced into the open. But this sword for whatever reason starts spells like...almost a full magic glintblade's floating glyph above where my spell normally is. I'm sure someone might be able to use this info.
For reference the player character is about 3.5-4 glintblade glyphs in height, and it normally casts at about 5, but with this sword its closer to 6. If that makes any sense.
- Anonymous
Yeah I know its a hybrid weapon but for the love of god a carian slicer shouldn't be so bad with this. I felt bad for my opponent when his creativity yielded less than 200 damage on me, yet an actual swing did much better
- Anonymous
It obviously shouldn't be optimal for spell casting to use this sword since your paying for the convenience of not needing to swap weapon, but god dang, it should be at least close to the worst staff's scaling
- Anonymous
I desperately wanted to like this weapon. The Carian Slicer weaving into the light attack chain feels so clean. On paper it sounds great for a spellblade setup, however, it just scales so poorly on all fronts. At +25, offensive sorceries are doing just above 1/3 the damage of a +10 Carian Regal Scepter. It does less damage than Ghostflame Torch with light attacks and does less damage than practically any non-int scaling weapons that can be greased or enchanted.
The toolkit that it provides and the feel of weaving carian sword casts into auto attack chains is really awesome though! I hope this weapon gets a little love in a future tuning pass!
- Anonymous
Y’all need to calm down. This is a hybrid weapon and is really good if you want to be a master of many things and not only one.
- Anonymous
meant to be dual wielding with other rapier. use it as off hand and you have your spell list as ash of war.
- Anonymous
its sorcery scaling is 39. Carian Regal Scepter has a sorc scaling of 96. I got curious because I'm a Modder so i checked and confirmed in game.
- Anonymous
Finally we can master the sword and staff boyos. Sorcery nation rise up!
- Anonymous
People who are crying about this weapon once again seem to be misunderstanding it’s purpose. It’s both a staff AND a sword, it’s literally in the name. Ofcourse it’s not going to hit for a gabillion damage with your favourite setups, but it will give you more versatility, allowing you to have an offhand shield and never need to switch weapons since this is a two for one deal. I personally love it, people need to remember that not every weapon will work for every play styles, that is why there is many options.
- Anonymous
A lot of people cry about the fact the weapon isn't good for damage. People don't get there are also spells outside of damage (frost build up, buffs). You pair this with Main Gauche in left hand (Carian Sovereignty Frost Infused), use L1 for Powerstance Moveset and R1 to mix-ups.
I do agree maybe it should just be made a special weapon with an ash of war to act as a catalyst in order to also have R2 available, or at least allow us to switch the ash of war to something else.
The scaling is bad and there is no indicator on how much your spells are scaling with it. Cool we finally have a full caster weapon, cooler if it wasn't a thrusting sword with trash scaling.
- Anonymous
This thing needs a sorcery scaling like the staves granted not as aggressive but it needs a bit more than what it outputs at this time.
- Anonymous
This rapier is absolutely trash and needs some serious buffing
Rocking a 72 int and 50 dex build
This weapon at +25 is out damaged by literally every other rapier with magic infusion including the BASE RAPIER at the same level!
Worse than that how ever because this weapon lacks a spellbuff aside from what any generic weapon has unlisted it also gets out damaged by almost every staff including the starter staff UNUPGRADED the only staff this weapon does more damage than is an unupgraded stone diggers staff by a whopping 3 damage... That is pathetic truly,
I get this was made "before they perfected their technique" but come on I expect way more from a CARIAN weapon this is just sad. What makes it worse is that these kinds of weapons used to rock one game prior
Immolation tinder MY BELOVED rocked so hard because it had damage to compete with its peers and because it had a spell buff that could get close to the big boy staves so how'd they screw this up?
They already did it but GOOD!
I will still use this weapon because I want it to be good and should it get any of the buffs it needs I will be the happiest tarnished in the land mark my words.
- Anonymous
For anyone who is curious, you can not scholars armament or grease it. The weapon is 100% bugged. They need to hot fix some stuff like this weapon since right now you better off running with bare fist rather using this weapon.
- Anonymous
Have anyone tried casting scholars armament or grease on it?
I remember DS2 you could cast great magic or crystal magic weapon on Blue Flame and directly increase sorcery damage.
- Anonymous
All of these Carian weapons are garbage, including Rellana's LGS which is very much inferior to Milady in every regard (except abusing the L2R2 to poisebreak very large enemies, but if you're built INT Wing of Astel's L2 is faster, more effective and does more damage)
they gave us all these cool looking weapons and then made them super rigid and weaker than any normal weapon in the same category, it's crazy.
I was losing it when I found out it was basically Blue Flame but a rapier, but unless you're dual wielding rapiers it's just a bad pick.
- Anonymous
people overlooking this weapon's amazing pairing with the Main-gauche, ending in a very versatile moveset where L1 is a quick dual wielding attack, L2 is the Main-gauche's Ash of War, R1 is the 1h attack and R2 is any sorcery you want. The mix-ups are insane
- Anonymous
Yeah it’s bad, its attack is worse than a magic rapier at 80 int, and it’s even worse for sorcery with carian slicer doing ~2/5 as much damage as Regal Scepter. Hopefully it’s bugged and the damage from the sword itself is supposed to also be applied when it connects with an enemy during a sorcery cast, but even then I don’t think it would out damage regal scepter at 80 int
Please From Soft! Please give this thing real sorcery scaling. Its the only weapon im actually interested in on a conceptual level from the dlc and its not usable in its current state. Even a ~340 sorcery scaling would be fine. It just cant keep its like ~180 sorcery scaling it has right now.
- Anonymous
Is there a similar weapon that allows the channeling of Incantations?
- Anonymous
They really should've made the casting button the ash of war I'm missing the neutral running, jumping, heavy attacks
- Anonymous
This weapon has exactly 0 Sorcery Scaling, most likely a bug, as that is a major oversight. Testing with a max Carian Royal Scepter at 75 Int on a Godrick Soldier, got me 866 for a Glintstone Pebble, but a 361 on a Glintstone Pebble with this weapon maxed out to +25.
- Anonymous
on the bright side, you can now mod this thing to be as useful as it is cool
- Anonymous
Everyone acting like this is bad because it doesn't have insane scaling doesn't know how to play the game beyond terra magic fog wall cheese. Really cool utility possibilities with this
- Anonymous
This feels awkward until you realize this is likely intended to be used with carian sword sorceries
- Anonymous
The casting power is somewhat between 155-158 at max, compared to +0 crystal staff and glintstone staff.

Ouch, I wonder if this is horrible on purpose? An outdated **** of a weapon that was from a time before they invented proper Carian Staves? It's a shame because the concept is so damn cool. Also it's too bad you can't change the Ash of War. Imagine how awesome it would be to have this weapon, then use a Carian Ash of war with it?! I really hope they make it AT LEAST useable. It opens up so many cool build ideas for Carian spell casters.
- Anonymous
Blue Flame my beloved <3 you finally got rid of your FTH requirement from DS3 too.
- Anonymous
Not only does the sorcery scaling need to be put here, it is an absolute crime that even though it is a +25 weapon and not somber why is it locked to the thrust ash? This is the one weapon you need to be able to put the magic ashes on , or at least if they were gonna lock it to one make it carian sovereignty, its an absolute shame that this weapon made it through testing this cool yet this useless
Absolutely criminal that you can't use this to cast Scholar's Armament on itself. However, this is by far the funniest way to cast Carian Slicer. Also might be somewhat practical, as you seem to be able to chain from a light attack with the sword straight into Carian Slicer, which may have some uses.
Upgrades with normal Smithing Stones. Str - E Dex - D and Int - C at +25.
- Anonymous
For those who are interested in the approximate parameter of the sorcery scaling, then with my spell with 80 intelligence using the Carian Regal scepter in the other hand, I can say that this staff is extremely weak for high int characters, the difference in damage is from 2.5 to 4 times, the most powerful spells deal funny 400 damage. I can’t imagine how it can be used other than with Miriam’s Vanish to do a backstep in pvp.
- Anonymous
I really wished they had just given us a AoW to turn any other weapon for casting, if not then at least buff the damage
- Anonymous
I used to think Fromsoft hating INT builds was a meme until this DLC. Not a single good item for INT builds.
- Anonymous
While underwhelming for pure damage sorceries, it deals a good job on more utility based ones. IE :
Adula's moonblade frost proc into R1's for great damage, L1 if powerstanced with another rapier.
Rock sling to break stance and critical hit with the weapon.
Impaling thrust is one of the best AOW in the game with good tracking, good poise damage and FP/damage ratio (though being able to change it would be nice.)
But thinking about it, this with Greatblade Phalanx (poise damage), Adula's Moonblade, Rock Sling, Gravity sorcery (pull enemies towards you)
It favors a very versatile gameplay, once you work around to get the utilities you want it's a very likeable weapon. (I don't really know if the scaling is bugged or not BUT it should at the very least appear on the weapon page to give people the idea of what kind of scaling they'll get.)
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Looks like they drew from the numbers of DS3's weapon catalysts.
Straight up unusable.
- Anonymous
I know it's already been posted, but yes, it is bugged, it has no scaling stat so the sorceries being cast through it are HORRIBLY weak, hoping for a patch soon, I was really looking forward to using this.
- Anonymous
Note that the scaling is glitched as of 6/23 and quite weak in this glitched state. Once it is patched the scaling is expected to improve significantly
- Anonymous
Damage for casting sorceries is terrible (and there isn't the cheesy DS2 trick of buffing it with magic weapon to boost casting power). Ashes of War are often better than sorceries and you can't even change the AoW. It's C INT and D Dex at +25 (and 178 base damage for both magic and physical) if anyone is curious.
- Anonymous
Best way to think of it is as a left handed rapier for either dual rapier or offstoc, which replaces your main hand ash of war with a range of utility ashes instead (excluding scholars armament). Despite the low damage, Piercer is a great rollcatch, terra magica is good bait, greatblade phalanx can buy time or chain you into an attack, glintblade creates pressure, carian retaliation destroys single projectiles and eternal darkness defends you from multiple, freezing mist or night maidens mist can create or deny space, collapsing stars can catch runners, and comet can still interrupt enemy casting animations at range. Miriam's vanishing is also fun.
did any one check if the axe talismen and the tear for havey attacks works with it as the cast is tied to your havey attack
- Anonymous
At 14str 40dex 80int, a fully charged Carian Piercer from a Carian Regal Scepter with 373 sorcery scaling does 1546 dmg. The same attack with this weapon at +24 dealt 636 damage, and at +25 dealt 640 damage. The damage of sorceries cast by it does not increase while 2-handed. For comparison, an unleveled Demi-Human Queen's Staff with 163 sorcery scaling dealt 626 damage, while an unleveled Digger's Staff with 168 sorcery scaling dealt 648. Talismans that increase Str and Dex don't increase the damage of sorceries, but talismans that increase Int do. After selecting the weapon and hovering over the lower damaging staff, the sorcery scaling number was displayed as lower than this weapons, meaning that it does have a hidden sorcery scaling stat. I should also note that with these stats and at +25, it has 538 damage one-handed and 541 two-handed. While held in the right hand, your Ash of War is Impaling Thrust unless a shield overrides it, and the heavy attack input will be used to cast spells. In the left, your Ash of War input will be replaced by spellcasting, and the heavy attack input will use your right hand weapons heavy attack.
- Anonymous
Using this with the new parry dagger, maybe that's why the ability is on the strong attack? Pretty cool because it gives access to a good parry, sorceries and a power stanced moveset. Still kinda weak tho and should be buffed
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
My disappointment is immeasurable... and my day is ruined. WHY?! This could have been so cool!
No sorcery scaling at all. Not even a boost for Sword Sorceries! An ash of war you can't change and it's not even an appropriately themed one! They could have chosen ANY of the magic ashes of war. They went with the bog standard Impaling Thrust.
I just... there are so many incredible new and old weapons. I was ecstatic when I discovered this... only to find it utterly unremarkable in every single way. I went into the DLC with a carian knight build just for this weapon.
Alright... My pissing and whining are over. FromSoft, please buff. Goodnight.
- Anonymous
Another weapon that seems to have been given the curse of ER's weird scaling/upgrade system. Uninfusable, but requires regular smithing stones. Can't be buffed, Spell scaling is basically non existent. And stuck with Impaling Thrust as an ash of war lol
I can see some niche builds in PvP; but so far, this is looking less like the return of the Blue Flame, and more like they dug up the Cleric's Candlestick from the dumpster.
- Anonymous
Tested at 70 Int + Graven Mass talisman Vs Troll at the Secluded Cell
Un-upgraded, Night Comet did 301 damage
At +24, Night Comet did 324
The Incant Scaling is definitely there, but extremely low
Even tried with Carian Slicer incase the sword also is able to hit enemies while swinging.
Sorcery Sword +24 - 228
Carian Regal Septer +10 - 556

Insane weapon, while also being a catalyst.
You get an offstoc and a staff for your off hand
just keep in mind it overwrites your mainhand aow
- Anonymous
My guess is this will be very annoying with stuff like the new miriam spell and other utility spells like scholar's shield.
- Anonymous
Okay, if what everyone says here is is true, that means that at minimum requirements, this sword
should be the second best staff underneath the demi human queen staff until 22 int where is also ties with astrologers
- Anonymous
Should be noted that you can not guard counter with this weapon since spell casting is tied to r2 and with no sorc scaling the damage is abysmal - hope from patches this weapon it could be a great successor to blue flame and pvp mix ups could be excellent
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
At max upgrades the magic damage is about 45-50% of my Carian Staff. I could get past the ash of war and weapon damage in exchange for the versatility.. but I mean from Staff a charged Comet is doing 2407, from the sword 1060. Now I don't rely on my magic for everything; it's not the focus of my build however IT IS a core component to my build and my hardest hitting abilities.
Dex / Int Arcane Trickster
- Anonymous
this weapon is definitely bugged. when equipped in your offhand it functions like a normal catalyst. however unlike a normal catalyst or offhand weapon it overwrites your MH AOW. just something to be aware of.
- Anonymous
A weapon that you can't change the ash of war, and the spells you cast with it does 25% of your usual damage with a staff. This thing needs a serious buff...
- Anonymous
At 80 INT and +25 using it to cast scholar's armament on another weapon (this weapon isn't buffable unfortunately) gives +125 magic damage, which gives around 167 sorcery scaling based on the formula. Hopefully they buff it because catalyst weapons are cool.
- Anonymous
Ok so that new v-something greatshield that puts the finger shield to shame and you turtle with this rapier, then use miriam's teleport spell.
Could be cancerous
- Anonymous
Okay look....this is cool. This is really cool. I loved the weapon/catalyst hybrids in DS3 and this is shaping up to be similar. But look....just hear me out...staff weapon with a twinblade moveset. THEN give it the heavy spellcast. Wizards would rejoice!

This thing acts as a staff! You can use your selected spells when pressing heavy attack. This thing is not useless at all

If you can't change the Ash of war whats the point of its existence? That could compensate the lack of scaling for casting, but if you can not properly use it as a catalyst but doesn't let you use ashes of war to compensate, why would you ever use it?

Seems like theres no sorcery scaling on it, and you cant change the ash of war, which is a shame, it would have been really cool to have put the Wing Stance ash of war, so you could cast with heavy, and use wing stance to get an actual heavy attack

Strange weapon. E/D/C Str/Dex/Int when maxed. At 20/80/80, it's weaker than Cold thrusting swords (614 AR vs Estoc's 621 and it doesn't have any Frost buildup). Pure dex/int definitely won't work out. The sorcery casting is weak. I can't think of a use case for this in any decent optimized build (including frost) other than some low level pvp build with strange requirements or Blue Flame nostalgia.

We need to rebel against fromsoft making useless weapons. We do not spend our hard earned money to pay for DLC thats inferior to 2 year old content. No more dead skills and weapons its unacceptable.

Good Job FromSoft. You made an even worse Scholar's Candlestick.
Found! You have to beat Rellana and then go to the waterfall to the left of the exit. Jump back into the legacy dungeon via the rafter of the gate and walk across to the other side. Its in a chest there with nothing guarding it.
Sorcery Scaling seems to be bugged on it. I dont think it gets upgraded with smithing stones. All sorceries hit like a wet noodle.
