Effect | Attribute required to perform sorceries. Also boosts magic power of intelligence-scaling Sorceries and improves Magic Resistance. |
Intelligence is one of the Stats in Elden Ring. Stats refer to various properties that govern your character's strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they are affected by interactions in and out of combat. Intelligence primarily affects a player's ability to cast Sorceries, as well as equipping the weapons required to cast them. It is one of the 8 Main Attributes that players can spend Runes on to level up, increasing the Stat's effectiveness and influencing their relative secondary stats. Stats such as Intelligence are an important aspect of character progression in Elden Ring.
Elden Ring Intelligence Stat General Information
- Intelligence (INT) is a Main Attribute that is required to cast most Sorceries. It is also a primary requirement for equipping the weapons required to cast these spells.
- Weapons in Elden Ring have a minimum Stat requirement that needs to be met before the weapon can be wielded. In the case of spell-based weapons, most of them require investment in either the Intelligence or Faith stats, or a combination of both. For example, the Carian Sorcerer Staff requires 14 INT to equip. Some weapons may also require points in Strength, Dexterity, Faith or Arcane in order to wield.
- Weapons are also given a Scaling Grade denoting the degree to which they scale with an attribute. Each point allocated to the Intelligence stat increases the effectiveness and damage dealt by Sorceries cast with weapons that have Intelligence scaling. A weapon with an Intelligence scaling grade of S will benefit the most from the Intelligence Attribute, followed by grades A, B, C, D, and E.
- Note that attributes will incur diminishing returns at higher levels, significantly reducing their benefits after a certain point with regards to weapon scaling. This is often referred to as the 'Soft Cap'. A 'Hard Cap' also exists in which additional points in an attribute returns little to no benefit.
- When scaling the attack power of a melee armament, like all stats, Intelligence soft caps differ depending on the weapon and the damage type being scaled. Scaling on magic, fire, lightning, or holy damage is always 20/50/80. Scaling on physical damage may be 18/60/80 or 20/60/80. While Cold weapons normally have soft caps of 18/60/80 on physical damage and 20/50/80 on magic damage, the following Cold weapons have soft caps of 18/60/80 for both physical damage and magic damage:
- Cold Dagger
- Cold Parrying Dagger
- Cold Misericorde
- Celebrant's Cold Sickle
- Cold Great Knife
- Cold Wakizashi
- Cold Bloodstained Dagger
- Cold Erdsteel Dagger
- When scaling the sorcery scaling or incantation scaling of a Catalyst, Intelligence soft caps differ depending on the catalyst. The soft caps can be 18/60/80, 25/60/80, or 15/30/45. The Demi-Human Queen's Staff has a unique scaling formula, with soft caps of 20/40/80. The soft caps of Intelligence on each catalyst are as follows:
- Glintstone Staff - 18/60/80
- Crystal Staff - 25/60/80
- Gelmir Glintstone Staff - 15/30/45
- Carian Regal Scepter - 25/60/80
- Digger's Staff - 18/60/80
- Astrologer's Staff - 18/60/80
- Carian Glintblade Staff - 18/60/80
- Prince of Death's Staff - 25/60/80
- Albinauric Staff - 15/30/45
- Academy Glintstone Staff - 18/60/80
- Carian Glintstone Staff - 18/60/80
- Azur's Glintstone Staff - 25/60/80
- Lusat's Glintstone Staff - 25/60/80
- Meteorite Staff - 18/60/80
- Rotten Crystal Staff - 25/60/80
- Staff of Loss - 25/60/80
- Golden Order Seal - 15/30/45
- Frenzied Flame Seal - 15/30/45
- Demi-Human Queen's Staff - 20/40/80
- Maternal Staff - 25/60/80
- Staff of the Great Beyond - 15/30/45
- Points in Intelligence will also improve your Magic Defense, reducing damage from sources of Magic Damage.
- +2 Magic Defense per level from 1 to 20 Intelligence
- +0.66 Magic Defense per level from 21 to 35 Intelligence
- +0.4 Magic Defense per level from 36 to 60 Intelligence
- +0.25 Magic Defense per level from 61 to 99 Intelligence
How to Increase Intelligence in Elden Ring?
Intelligence is one of the Main Attributes that players can spend Runes on in order to level up.
- The ability to level up is unlocked shortly after meeting Melina for the first time near the beginning of the game.
- Leveling up can be done at any Site of Grace once unlocked.
- The amount of Runes required to raise an Attribute increases with each character Level.
- Runes are obtained primarily by defeating Enemies and Bosses. Certain consumables such as the Fringefolk's Rune can also be used to gain a fixed number of runes.
Elden Ring Intelligence Notes & Tips
FAQ: Does Frost Damage scale with INT Elden ring?
- Since Cold Weapons in the game add Magic Damage, Frost scales with Intelligence. (This is not true. Frost buildup does not scale with any stat. However, the magic damage on cold affinity weapons will scale with Intelligence.) For reference, players can take a look at which Stats each Incantaton or Sorcery requires in order to suit to determine what complements the Spell effects best. Players can have a look at each of the Cold Sorceries to see that they each require Intelligence, but not Arcane or Faith. Each of these spells would scale with Intelligence. This also applies to the requirements found in each Weapons or Equipment.

Elden Ring Intelligence Builds
Sad fact: The higher INT you get in game, the lower INT you get IRL
- Anonymous
If you want to be respected as a mage abandon the spells and just infuse your weapons with magic and use those exclusively. Casting spells with a stick is sad AF
- Anonymous
picking a full casting int build on ur first playthrough / first souls game is such a terrible idea it's honestly bad game design it's even an option. so many new players just don't realize spells are terrible and are forced to use summons because of it, while also not learning the mechanics of the game at all due to using a ranged build. I feel like this spoils so many people's experience with this game.
- Anonymous
Inteligence attribute means knowledge and it is normally related to scientists/sorcerers but may be required for some incantatios/miracles too, which means religious people have to invest in knowledge too for mastering some powers.
Golden order fundamentalists require int for their incantations to demonstrate religion is not only believing in what you can't see, you may believe in a philosophy too which requires you to study instead of just memorizing prayers and restricting your behavior. I can't remember a fundamentalist incantation to make you kneel.

This page is missing the Smithscript Shield as of commenting this.

Beware, levelling this stat apparently makes you incapable of greeting your summons during coop.

staff of the great beyond is supposedly 25 int 25 faith instead of 27/27, someone check and edit if it's necessary. i don't have the item

Should make the builds section smaller somehow. Scrolling down 10+ pages is too much

Any info on softcaps relating to magic consumables? I just finishe a consumables only run and had a lot of fun with it, but I never knew if it would be worth investing too much in int. I aimed at 50 dex/str and 30 arc, but I could find no good info on the int scaling.

Look I just to be a cool wizard with a cool wizard hat, robe and staff who can cast spellz, It's pretty straightforward

Pure-Magic is one of the most boring, strong, and simple builds.
Does not require many brain cells and neurons from the user
Therefore, it is ironic that the intelligence of the users who actually score is -99.
- Anonymous
Joe many mages does it take to change a log by bolb? None! They're to busy! They're vigor!
- Anonymous
Literally ruined my first play through of this game leveling this up trying to go for a spell sword build. 0 cool weapons, 0 cool spells, boring ass gameplay. Should have gone with faith...
- Anonymous
Ah yes the best stat to mine salt out of whiny basement dwelling sweaty tryhards who base their identity around pvp invasions in a video game cry more.
- Anonymous
The Greathood on this page erroneously states -10% HP when it should say -9% HP
- Anonymous
After doing 1 NG and 1 NG+ run using both int and faith idk how ppl say faith is better than int for pve (btw if u want the most braindead time of ur life just use double staff of loss with night comet)
- Anonymous
Ironically, running intelligence builds requires least intelligence irl
- Anonymous
Coming from a melee/str only playstyle, this sh't is fun and the fastest and easiest playthru I had.
- Anonymous
the person who wrote this page didnt even include the scaling of Intelligence. Just filled it with useless stuff smh
- Anonymous
The majority of the intelligence weapons scale better with other stats than intelligence. I found that kinda funny.
- Anonymous
The one issue I have with int builds is that they only have magic damage. Str have pure physical and fire, dex have pure physical and lightning, faith have holy, fire, lightning; arcane has pure physical, fire and even magic dmg options. Int is 100% countered by barrier of gold
- Anonymous
only 15 out of 30 intelligence somber weapons have completely unique skills. When counting i only counted skills that dont have an ash of war version.

My fellow mages, LEVEL VIGOR. PLEASE. THE PVP FIGHTS ARE OVER IN TWO SWINGS OF MY ZWEIHANDER. Also going entirely intelligence for damage usually isn't a great idea. Mix some strength in there; I unga, therefore I bunga ya know?

Intelligence: The stat which governs magic resistance and damage. Lore-wise, it seems to be the stat associated with an understanding and manipulation of lifeforce (Both crystalized in the form of glintstone and its much rawer essence wielded by ancient ancestral spirits) , rather than with any particular cleverness. The primeval current is the cosmic collection of ley lines through which this energy flows, shaping reality as it does so. Through study, mages can harness a fraction of this power to "bend" fate, although it seems to be a scorned and mostly forgotten practice among most modern sorcerers, barring the carians. The reality bending aspect of glintstone sorcery is also the foundation of gravity sorceries.

It’s called intelligence and yet those you level this seem to be averse to leveling vigor
- Anonymous
its a shame how str/int is kinda gimmicky, most str/int weapons lean way more on str than int, and there are virtually no utility spells or damage spells that are useful at low int. str/faith is much better imo since there are tons of nice utility spells that don't cost a lot of fth to use.
- Anonymous
the scaling displayed on this page for +0 Carian Knight's Sword (D/D/C for str/dex/int) is wrong, it should be D/D/D (it only gets to C/D/D at +9)

honestly such a fun stat in ER, alongside ARC. too bad theyre still pretty op so you really cant have any balanced fun.

This page needs editing. Horn Bow requires 10 str, 14 dex, and 12 int (not 10, 10, 14 as displayed).
- Anonymous
i find it funny how most intelligence builds play the game in the most brainless way possible

Literally the best (second best if you are addicted to bleed) stat in the game: almost no enemy or boss is strong against magic damage (except Renala who is a complete push over and red wolves, and slightly more defense on mages), has frostbite as % damage and a defense debuff which prock can be reset with 1 fire damage hit, gives access to spells unlike pure dexterity, gives acces to gravity magic that destroys any flying enemy and can pull them off cliffs, gives more defense against magic damage itself, is completely unaffected by weather conditions and environment (I'm looking at you fire damage) and lets you use law of regression that cancels any used buffs and heals all status effects...
Sure there is almost no variety to damage types unlike with other stats, but why bother with them when almost everything either is weak or has neutral magic defense...

This page keeps repeating that determination from a right hand weapon applies to spells from a left hand catalyst and idk if maybe that was something that got patched but it definitely doesn’t now, nor does Royal Knight’s Resolve

Correction: The Falling Star Beast Jaw requires 34 STR not 24

Why has the Intelligence page not been given the UI update the Faith and Arcane pages have? It's been slowly reformatted over the past month and a half but Faith and Arcane were both fully formatted within a week of each other. It's usable right now, I just want a more clean UI.
Does intelligence increases cold infusion rate? Like arcane?

Instead of filling the main page with useless level 50 builds, there should be the information about weapon / magic softcaps and hardcap.
- Anonymous
thinking maybe the caps are not set in stone across the board, maybe different spells and staves scale differenly
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Does intelligence effect the damage of frostbite or the build up? I know that putting points into arcane can make bleed and poison build up faster, but is it similar for int and frost?

Okay so just learned about the cap with catalyst spells that require multiple attributes like int and faith or arcane and faith. The weapon scaling continues to increase by 2s and 3s well into the 60s but according to fextralife the spells that use both cap at 45 for arcane, is that true for int/faith build as well??
- Anonymous
Sword of St Trina has an interesting Sleep Ability. Does it scale with intelligence? Has anyone tested it?
- Anonymous
So on both faith and arcane, we have a list of weapons that need those stats to properly use, can we get the same thing here for int, so all "int" required weapons can be found on this page like those other two pages?
- Anonymous

- Anonymous
last cap is at 90 intelligence, beyond that you get very little benefit (1 or 2 points of spellbuff per int on the strongest staves)
- Anonymous
I hate that some holy incantations require investment in intelligence like seriously why from soft they've never done that before in their games.
- Anonymous
Imp Head (cat) increases intelligence by 2 points when worn.
- Anonymous

Soft Cap for INT and FTH for specifcally weapons seems to be around 50. You can obviously put more points into it, but only every 3rd or 4th is actually going to get you more than +1 increase in attack rating. Tested it with the Darkmoon Greatsword and Royal Greatsword for INT, as well as the Inseperable Greatsword and the Ciper Pata & and Coded Sword for FTH.
- Anonymous
Are the softcaps for int and fth different? Does int continue to scale well past fth to make up for the lack of sorcery variety?
- Anonymous
i found the soft cap at 80. has 352-353 spell buff with boss staff it can be raised further but like 1 point at a level.
- Anonymous
Soft cap seems to be 80, and I didn't notice any significant curve on the progression. But after 80, it gives next to nothing.
- Anonymous
Intelligence 16-38 you get 1 point MagicAtttack per level. 38-?? only 0,5 so you need 2 points for onr mage attack
- Anonymous
"Intelligence enhances many aspects of magic and sorceries, not only increases the maximum capacity of FP, but it also increases the quality of Spells" (stated below the first paragraph on last update: 25 Nov 2021)
So unlike sorcery builds, faith builds need to invest into mind and faith if they are willing to improve the FP pool (I'm guessing you get more FP from the mind stat than Intelligence stat to balance faith builds with sorcery builds, I could be wrong though).
I'm a chill guy who lowkey don't give a f*ck so use whatever you want homie you play the game how ever you want
