Rock Sling is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Rock Sling spell launches projectile rocks from the ground that can damage nearby enemies.

One of the glintstone sorceries that manipulates gravitational forces.

Pulls a clump of rocks from the earth and sends them flying. This sorcery can be cast while in motion.

A gravitational technique studied by the young Radahn. His master was an Alabaster Lord with skin of stone.

Elden Ring Rock Sling Guide

rock sling animation

  • Gravity Sorcery
  • Damage is boosted by the Meteorite Staff.
  • Stamina Cost: 29
  • Medium Cost Sorcery (18 Focus Points per cast).
  • Uses only 1 Memory Slot.
  • Requires Medium Intelligence (18).
  • Deals standard physical damage
  • Cast Speed is medium.
    • The delayed projectiles make Rock Sling a good choice to fight enemies that dodge spells (ie. NPC Invaders). They are programmed to dodge the initial cast as opposed to when the projectiles actually launch.
  • Cannot be charged.
  • Deals decent stance breaking damage.
  • Tracks very well on enemies directly below the player, as the projectiles can travel directly downwards.
  • The projectiles will travel in a light rightwards curve after launching, so the player should account for intervening map geometry.
  • Generally inaccurate for close range as the rocks will shoot past the target. However if the rocks are summoned behind the target because they are so close, the rocks will fling backwards and hit the target.
  • Inappropriate for tight spaces, as the 3 projectiles are large and will disintegrate on contact with geometry. There is also considerable spread, and effective DPS is significantly reduced if any projectiles do not make contact. On horseback, this can be mitigated by turning perpendicular to the target (causing all 3 projectiles to travel in an approximately straight line towards the target).
  • So long as this spell is cast from the left hand, and a foe is targeted upon casting, both the center and right-most projectile have infinite range. The left-most rock will drop off as normal.
  • This is one of a handful of unexpected things whose range is increased from wearing the Arrow's Reach Talisman.

the GOAT early spell for any mage build, works wonders with Blue Dancer Charm, is easy to grab along with the meteorite staff that boosts it's damage.

      • This spell seems completely useless, even with a Meteorite Staff. Slow cast time, slow projectile, extremely poor tracking, and doesn't even do that much more damage than Great Glintstone Shard, despite being more difficult to cast and land in all aspects.

"slight rightward curve" could be a curve on the right (as the spell is) or a curve to the right (opposite the spell) - how could this be reworded to match the spell's actual casting?

          • Anonymous

If it only needs 1 memory slot, why does it say 3? I have the int requirement but can't equip it. I have 2 free slots.

            • Anonymous

368 scaling staff plus graven mass talisman. A single rock only did about 170 dmg to an armored strength build. My point is that this is not a BoG counter if it can’t even overcome a str builds physical resistances.

              • Anonymous

The reason there is only 2 rocks on the icon of the spell instead of 3 is because usually only 2 of the rocks will hit your target due to collision with terrain :)

                • Anonymous

Wrecks dragons with stance breaks, good for magic resistant foes, and a decent pick for invader npcs. One of 3 staples along with your preferred glinstone, and night variant

"The projectiles will travel in a light rightwards curve after launching, so the player should account for intervening map geometry." wrong, it does that only while the staff is in the left hand, if the staff is in your right hand they will arch to the left instead

"Is there a point to this spell now? Glintstone pebble is faster, can be chain cast, and has a higher damage to fp ratio."

Can't reply, so will post instead:

Yes, it deals physical damage, hits hard, goes further and also bypasses enemy dodges. It's a good spell to have in general, I always have it equipped

                      • Anonymous

It's affected by the damage increase of blue dancer charm, which deals massive damage for early game, but being naked would mean you are weaker than glass :p

                        • Anonymous

Still good in a ton of pve situations I honestly never got far away enough to see the infinite range in action

Is there a point to this spell now? Glintstone pebble is faster, can be chain cast, and has a higher damage to fp ratio.

1.07 completely nerfed this spell. I’m glad I at least got as far as I did before the patch. I’m not very good and relied on being able to keep a distance between myself and the most damaging foes!

                              • Anonymous

1.07 made rock sling worse now they go in random spots half of the time, while before it would go to the same spot consistently.

Would be nice to be able to chain cast this, feels so janky to cast and stop. Could balance it by making the initial cast fire one rock for lower fp, the second fires two rocks for a bit more fp and the final swing fires three for the current fp cost. Gives the one bread and butter gravity spell a bit more utility so you can quickly fire off one projectile for trash mobs instead of overkilling them with three.

Why does it have to curve? There's just no good reason for it, and it's so insanely inconvenient. It would've been a ridiculously better spell if it just fired straight

The guide is still wrong. This deals no magic damage, only physical. Easily tested with the magic scorpion talisman, which does not change the damage at all. This means that it can be boosted with consumables like exalted flesh, but the only persistent means of improving it with equipment aside from your choice of staff are the graven school/mass talismans that affect sorceries. Still a great spell, but I really wish there were some equipment other than the meteorite staff to strengthen gravity sorceries.

I was wondering why they haven't patched the NPC invaders dodging at the wrong time, then I realized... the AIs are panic-rolling and getting punished for it. It's a humanizing moment for them.

This requires 18 INT, costs 18 FP to cast, and is boosted by the Meteorite Staff, which you need 18 INT to use. What are you trying to tell me, funny developer man?

                                          • Anonymous

The flight curve of the rocks change depending in wich hand is the staff held. If it is held in the left hand - the projectiles will do a slight curve to the right; if in the right hand - to the left.

                                            • Anonymous

Even if the spell is extremely good, I think the wiki is wrong when saying it has split damage, unless the magic part doesn't benefit from magick buffs??)
Tested with a meteoric staff, 58 Intelligence, on the giant next to secluded cell:
                                              768 damage
924 (+an other meteoric staff in off hand)
                                              1144 (+golden vow spell)
                                              1144 (+terra magicka)
                                              1144 (+magic-shrouding cracked tear)
So I guess you should use flame grant me strength and similar physical damage buffs instead

Could someone confirm this and add to the wiki that it doesn't benefit from magic buff?

Absolutely CARRIED. The fact you can get it as soon as you start the game makes it better as well. Will always have a place for my mage build.

                                                • Anonymous

If you have the Arrow's Reach Talisman equipped alongside Rock Sling, and if you cast from your left hand, Rock Sling literally becomes a cheaper and physical-based version of Loretta's Greatbow that has crazy range and can hit from max lock-on range (for the most part, since I think lock-on range depends entirely on the area you're in). Couple with the fact that it does massive poise damage on weakpoints, it can take down dragons if you aim at their heads from far away without ever needing to get close.

                                                  • Anonymous

Funny enough, the curve of the rock depends on the hand your staff is in; rocks curve right in the right hand, and left in the left hand.

                                                    • Not actually infinite range; the projectiles dissolve somewhere around the max range of Loretta's Greatbow. The two rocks on the right just stop descending.

                                                      • Anonymous

this spell can also target the bloody death bird at the palace approach ledge-road grace where people like to do the farm exploit. from above this spell can travel very far

                                                        • Anonymous

As of May 17th 2022, this spell + Meteorite Staff is OP.

I am Level 60 and I smoked the Glintstone Dragon.

Cast range is "anything you can target"

*anything* gets poise damage and falls over after 3 casts. I realize this has been nerfed, it probably should be nerfed again.

This thing does LUDICROUSLY high poise damage to the point where every boss in the game is completely unable to fight back because they just spend the whole time on the floor. Seriously, try it if you don't believe me. A spell designed to keep game journalists from rating the game a 0/10 for the UI not telling them where the nearest assassin's creed point of interest is

                                                            • Anonymous

AN absolutely fantastic utility spell that I will always have equipped. Yes, there are far more powerful spells, but rock sling has certain properties that give it the upper hand it certain situations. Apart from it being the best spell for dealing poise damage, it spawns the rocks on the ground in front of you, and will do so from walls that are just over head-height, so using it from complete safety is possible as long as you can lock on. I can't emphasize enough how useful this property is. also the sideways arc and summon spread means it can be fired from corners in the rare situation where that might be needed.
It's an incredibly versatile spell that remains useful throughout the entire game. It will always be my go-to for smacking dragons in the face for that sweet critical.

                                                              • Anonymous

This spell is a must-have for sorcerers as it's one of the few spells that doesn't deal magic damage but physical damage. Amazing for bosses that have great mitigation against magic damage. Two of the three rocks that you conjure seem to have infinite range when targeting an enemy (as of 1.04 on PC), which most certainly is a bug, but it makes fights like Astel a walk in the park.

                                                                • Having 18 points in INT, this spell and the Meteorite Staff works great against Magma Wyrms, especially if you should happen to want to stop in Gael Tunnel early game. Anywhere from 3 to 5 casts will stun the gecko and then you can stab him in the brain.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Great for killing boss dragons and for grinding the dragons around Greyoll because you can target lock their heads. Deals a ton of damage and KOs in generally about 3 or 4 shots for boss dragons and 2 for baby dragons, giving you time to heal up or deal a crit.
The baby dragons also stay stunned long enough you can get a lot of headshots in without missing the chance to crit before they get back up With the meteoric ore blade, for example, you can get off a full combo and two hits of the next and then stop to crit just before it recovers.

                                                                    • Deals STANDARD Physical damage, but comes with a lot of Poise damage. Tested against Moonlight Altar Crystalians with an unupgraded Hammer (STRIKE damage) vs 18 INT Rock Sling + Meteorite Staff.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Seems the latest patch fixed the exploit that let you spam this spell at certain boss fogs (Gaol Tunnel Magma Wyrm for example) and wipe them out without entering the arena. I used this on a number of the cheap bosses in the mini dungeons to good effect, tried it yesterday and the rocks break against the door/fog now.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

Unfortunately this and the occasional pebble are basically all you'll ever need and the best choice in 90% of situations. The relatively low cost, damage, range (of 2/3 of the rocks, dunno why one has shorter range), posture damage, low risk, and the fact that enemies dodge when the rocks come out of the ground rather than when they're a meter away from their faces makes it OP as hell. Fun to use, but hard to do so without thinking "I'm trivializing the game for myself."

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

In all seriousness though, we needed more than this one fully functional (admittedly awesome) gravity spell when blue sorcery got 400 projectiles in a variety of sizes and shades.

There's a dozen incredible gravity spells in game already, just bound to colossal weapon arts or enemy skills - give them to us pesky int casters!

Also can catch most bosses/enemies that are programmed to dodge all your spells since they will perform a dodge right when the spell is initially cast, but the rocks are actually summoned and projected tenths of a second later, which will catch them right after their dodge.

I don't know if it's a placebo effect from reading it in comments here and elsewhere, but after switching between right and left hand a few times, I believe it's true that this has longer range if your staff is in the left hand. It might have better tracking, too, because after the supposed undocumented nerf, I don't have any more trouble hitting things with it than I did.

Even if the range and tracking has been nerfed, this is still crazy good. The only thing preventing it from being straight-up OP, moreso than bigger/flashier/more damaging spells, is the fact that you're likely to lose to 1/3rd or 2/3rds damage when there are obstacles for the left or right rocks to sail into (the rocks swing a little to the right on cast, at least if your staff is in the left hand, so positioning yourself to put possible obstacles further to the left can help with this.) It's not super high damage, but still does decent damage. It still has good tracking, it still has great range (weirdly, it seems common for a single rock to fall to the ground much earlier than the other two) and most importantly, it still does insanely high stance damage. It staggers large enemies and bosses so fast you need to be careful not to cast it *too quickly* when a fight first starts and the enemy is further away, or they'll stagger so far away you don't have enough time to run up and do the crit before they get up. The only downside is that this can't be relied on as your sole ranged spell due to terrain giving it trouble, you need a backup that shoots something in a more straight line for shooting down cramped corridors or at an enemy on the other side of a doorway. The backup can also be something that does more direct damage to cover that particular role. It will also come in handy in situations where you don't want to wait for this spell's slow casting speed, although I think the casting speed is worth dealing with against a lot of large enemies just for the stagger potential anyway.

                                                                                                            • I'm sad to announce... They secretly NERFED our MVP Spell Rock Sling:

Now, However, I'm whiffing it way more or the rocks fall short before headshotting enemies ... Very frustrating. It was already tricky enough to use.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

However, you can use a stronger sorcery scaling staff to cast it while holding the meteorite staff in the other hand for the gravity spell potency increase.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                                      1. Crazy high posture damage. Stuns every boss in 3 casts or less.
                                                                                                                      2. Crazy range. If you can lock onto the target, this spell WILL hit them.
                                                                                                                      3. Efficient use of FP, can be spammed even at lower mind levels.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

And this is while using the meteorite staff that would boost rock sling’s damage. Have I just been fighting a ton of enemies with way higher physical resistance than magic resistance?? Because this seems consistent with nearly every enemy, even bosses.

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

1: lots of dmg if all 3 rocks hit the target, in late game one spamming can be easily 1k+ dmg.

2: can actually stunning bosses unlike pebbles, which gives you more time to spam :)

Loretta's Greatbow, this can become a surprising middleground.

4: Maybe not mentioned: if you want to have a rock-sling spamming build for the late game bosses for cheesy wins (what I did after ashes of the capital), please invest some mind because after casting this spell your stamina will regenerate a little bit which makes you basically a monster dps if you have tons of fp.

Some annoying thing about this spell:

1: if you are battling in a narrow area or any barrier that is near you or the target, the arc traveling path of the rock may hit the wall and thus significantly reduces the dmg.

2: even though it has much better tracking about the Pebble (fun fact, if you use this to a npc invader almost touching you, the rock can actually sling backward to give a "surprise" attack), still not enough for some long path traveling like flying dragons, you have to wait the target stand still for sweet spamming hit.

3: please use target lock when using this spell, for some wired reason without it the rock basically fly to some really underside spots and not tracking enemies in lots of scenarios.

Even with all of those quirks, this spell still becomes one of my spell staples and that's how good this spell is.

I hope this doesn't get nerfed, but I would understand if it were. Busted spell and I love it. Also think it's broken in a literal sense, opponents dodge at the cast instead of when the rocks are actually coming at them. Which with such good long range tracking works out terribly on the AI's behalf.

Commander O'Neil (spawn him, run out, jump on the big ass tree root on the left of the entrance, spam rock sling, maybe occasionally jump - bam, he cant do **** either, more like commander O'No)
