Starlight is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Starlight spell creates a floating ball that illuminates the surroundings. Great for dark areas. Updated to Patch 1.07.

One of the glintstone sorceries of the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

Creates a small, floating star light that illuminates surroundings.
This sorcery can be cast while in motion.

Granted to sorcerers who depart from the academy to embark on journeys. Even during the blackest nights, sojourns underground, or imprisonment in gaol, the stars are never far from a sorcerer's side.

Elden Ring Starlight Note and Tips

  • Updated to patch 1.07. See Patch Notes for details.
  • There is a rumour that it can reveal hidden sorcerers in Sellia, but this is false, the sorcerers will reveal themselves either by attacking or when you get close enough, even without this spell.

Sure it costs fp, but using the lantern instead of this is like using a candle because a flashlight uses batteries.

      • Anonymous

Lessens the golden sheen on phantoms. Not quite as good as host's trick mirror, but it saves a talisman slot.

        • Increase the Intelligence requirement, remove the FP cost, make it have infinite duration while also making it to where if you cast it again, it would disable it. Basically, make this an actual upgrade over the Lantern for Mages, also perhaps make a Holy Yellow Incantation version for Faith users, the name could be "Sunlight" or something.

          • Tested it more and it doesnt actually reveal hidden sorcerers in Sellia, they just get revealed if you move close enough. The spell itself doesnt affect this.

            • I did some testing, it does reveal hidden sorcerers in Sellia, but the range is so short that they will aggro and reveal themselves before you can enter that range. So its really not very useful unless you are sneaking around with unseen form or something like that.

Personally I love it when mages use this, it makes me smile. Starlight is the only INT spell that isn't cringe on some level.

                • Anonymous

So before everyone writes this off as worthless this spell actually reveals all the invisible mages/enemies in the Town of Sellia much like the Sentry torch reveals the Black Knife assassins in Ordina. So while the torch and Lantern cost no FP to brighten areas this spell is far brighter and serves a useful purpose in one area and leaves your hand free unlike a torch.

Here's your choices when it comes to light:
Starlight: It takes up a spell slot is the brightest have to cycle through spell slots and have a staff in order to use it and some int
Lantern: The weakest light takes up an item slot free and infinite use
Torch: Takes up an equipment slot but brighter than the torch infinite use and some come in status inflicting variants also fire damage but you know switching to a shield or other items to use your build properly is a pain.

You'd have to be not so bright (lol get it lmao) to think this is useless. The lantern barely gives any light at all, I found myself using the torch or just going blind instead of bothering to activate it. The torch has to take up a hand. This is passive.

Has someone found out what the point of this is when there is a lantern that does the same infinitlly without any fp costs?
I feel like there is no reason to use this spell, or did I miss something?

                        • Anonymous

I found sth wierd and useful. When you have this on, revenants don't agro you even when you attack them. Can anyone else confirm this?

                          • Anonymous

Why can't they make this last until you cast it again and take off the cost? Make it like lantern, except you cast it as a spell... It would be so much nicer... Please From, make the duration last much longer at least!! :(

                            • Anonymous

would be neat if this had the added effect of drawing enemy agro like the shabriri talisman. like “i’m over here look at me!” to the boss for doing co-op

So, i've never considered using this over lantern when it comes to exploration, simply because the lantern doesn't require any stats or FP. Though, with this recently getting a pretty substantial buff, I've gotta ask: is this actually any better for luminating dark areas, compared to lantern?

Since no one has seemed to notice this, It reveals all the sorcerers in the town of Sellia making them much easier to fight.

                                      This should have either;

                                      - Had infinite duration and no FP cost and toggle on/off like a Lantern for some extra light at the cost of a spell slot.

                                      OR

                                      - Highlight illusory walls and reveal invisible paths. Heck, throw in some hidden messages a la Seek Guidance.

                                      • Anonymous

This really needs to be some sort of toggleable spell instead, for balance purposes it could cost 1FP per minute or something.

Anyone else noticed rats behaving oddly around this? Dropped into a dark area with rats in Earthbore Cave while using Starlight. The rats only aggro'd after being attacked, almost like they were dazzled. When jumping down with a torch they swarm as usual. Not the first time From has had some enemy interactions with light sources. Anyone able to replicate?

                                          • Anonymous

Should have lowered the spell cost or at the very least added 5% damage to glintstone sorceries while active to justify it's existance. Although for RP purposes it works well with my Star Shaman toon.

Is this the worst spell in the game? From cursory experience, it...

Offers an effect that can be replicated with an easily crafted item, a torch, or a cheaper item that can be purchased a hundred meters away
Has no capacity to do damage
Inflicts no status ailment or debuff
Offers no improvement to player or ally stats
Misses an obvious opportunity to have a use case by not revealing invisible enemies, illusory walls, or mimicry
Produces roughly as much light as a torch without any of the utility of a torch
                                              Costs 2500 runes to access
Has a short duration, necessitating frequent recasting
Can stop working at critical moments
Costs the same FP as magic glintblade or great glintstone shard
                                              Requires a spell slot

                                              So like...why.

                                              • Anonymous

Duration, FP, rune cost, location of vendor, etc. Everything about this just feels wrong. Thops sells this for 2500 runes but a nomad ~100m further into Liurnia along the same path Thops is positioned on sells a lantern for 1800 runes and nomad sells on "earlier" in the game in the Weeping Peninsula. Why treat this like it's superior to the lantern by putting them right next to each other and making this one the expensive option when mechanically it's just worse in every relevant way (the brighter light is never needed in my experience) without any lore reasons for making it bad (if it was supposed to be bad, then the genuinely kind Thops wouldn't make it his most expensive spell).

If the base parry skill can cost 0 FP, why not make this a 0 FP spell that lasts forever and can be deactivated upon casting again. It would function equally to a lantern but take up a spell slot and require a staff whilst still having a colder and brighter light. Alternatively, why not place the lantern later into the game to make early game dark areas a more significant challenge where the player needs either this, a torch or a consumable like glowstone. There's a multitude of other approaches they could've taken too as others have suggested but oh well

Dude wtf. How is this thing balanced? Some invader shows up, casts starlight, and literally everyone dies, even the invader. And the fact that you can chain cast it to summon GOD HIMSELF!?!!? Terrible game pls delete fromsoft.

                                                  • Anonymous

2-3 minutes would be great but the spell is still quite useful. It's much better than the lantern and doesn't have to be held like a torch. The only trade-off is having to recast in every minute, which sucks but if you are using the lantern also you will still have plenty of light when it goes out, before you can cast it again.

Basically, it could use a buff but it is still probably the best light source in the game especially when you only need that amount a light for a limited time.

                                                    • Anonymous

I'm gonna try running this for a while instead of lantern to see if the radius is worth the lack of infinite duration, on paper 1 minute seems far too low especially for 14fp, if it were 5 or something sure... but I think 14fp should be at least 5mins.

worth noting that the old lords talisman 2x the duration to a whopping 2 minutes!

                                                      • Anonymous

Absolutely shreds the darkness, insane damage to dimly lit areas, can stance break areas lacking light easily so that you can riposte with your eyes. Easily the lightest spell in the game. If you're lacking intellect to cast it, I highly recommend defeating Renalla to buy the Queen's Crescent Crown (7000), using Stargazer Heirloom talisman from the Divine Tower of Liurnia (free), and then rushing to Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree to get Marika's Soreseal (requires one stonesword key). Hope this helps for those who can't get past the dark part in Coastal Cave!

                                                        • Would be nice if it had infinite duration, recasting removing it. Charging allowing it to be a projectile and illuminate the area it sticks to.
Would also be nice if it made illusory walls shimmer; detectable.

                                                          • Some say why you need it if there's a lantern, but I personally like it. Soft blue light seems much more comfortable and what's more important radius is way bigger. I wish for a longer duration of course, or even ash for staves, but it is as it is.

                                                            • Anonymous

If we’re going to use one of our precious slots for this, it really should do more. Longer duration for sure, and maybe even include one of the special torch capabilities like animal repel or invisibility detection.

If there were no lantern, it could be worth it for the hands-free aspect, but currently, lantern makes this spell a wasted slot.

                                                              • Anonymous

Seriously needs to last many times longer. Looks cool so use it for fun if you want but since the lantern exists this sorcery really isn't good to use.

                                                                • Anonymous

Idk I kinda like it. Sure they could've added that it can detect illusory walls or something but just a light source is fine imo.

                                                                  • Anonymous

I love this spell, even though you should use the lantern instead, so I thought of ways From could maybe patch this so it isn't just another spell dropped into your chest after a use or two and forgotten forever. It's insane that, given how difficult it is to get memory slots in your first playthrough and how essential lighting is to dungeon/catacomb crawling, it should take a whole slot, there could be 1 free "utility" slot for spells like this, buff spells (weapon/protection), or the odd spell that doesn't do damage. They could make it so you can "turn it off" by having you reabsorb the spell if you cast it again while it's active; building off that, the spell is pretty pricey for what a lantern does for free, so you could regain a significant % of the FP spent when you reabsorb it. You could give it something the lantern can't do by allowing you to project a ball of light (think Magelight from Skyrim) by charging it since charging spells is all the rage now. Lastly, make it indefinite, or like 5 minutes, as 60 seconds is just ridiculously short. Damn it, From, let me dungeon crawl as a proper mage!

                                                                    • Anonymous

I expect Starlight to be buffed in a future patch; as is, it's completely useless compared to the lantern.

                                                                      • Anonymous

If you somehow have an extra memory slot lying around and prefer blue light over orange light, you can make use of it. It does have a bigger range than the lantern at least...

                                                                        • Anonymous

Not sure why some say this is useless. It's situational but very useful. The light radius is at least 7x bigger than the lantern, gives you a MUCH better idea of the room's space (or, say, whichever safe platforms there are to roll down a long hole) and it's a brighter cold light compared to the lantern's weaker warm light.

Sure, for simple shaded corners during daylight, or to avoid falling into pits inside caves all you need is the lantern, but I'd say the lantern is the bare minimum, akin to the bright aura your Demon's Souls character had, whereas this spell TRULY casts a light inside dark rooms/caves. And while it does take a memory slot, it doesn't take a hand off like a Torch would. I think most would agree spending 1/15th of your FP bar is better than not being able to use Power Stance, a Shield, Two-Handing, or a Staff on your secondary hand - just so that you can see with a Torch.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            Ideas:
While active, provides light and small increase to arcane. Lasts 2 mins.

Provides light only . Toggleable, also made into a ash of war to save slot and provide roleplay.

Provides light. Lasts 2 mins. Automatically dispels illusionary walls in range.

                                                                              • Useless.
