Jellyfish Shield is a unique Greatshield in Elden Ring. The Jellyfish Shield is a Shield that scales with Strength. Greatshields weigh a lot, but provide the best protection in the game. Greatshields provide a greater value of blocking and protecting one's self from enemy and boss attacks, but greatly increases the weight and reduces the player's mobility. This type of shield works best at reducing damage or guarding instead of parrying.
Contagious Fury lasts for 30 seconds and increases damage by 20%. However if you then two-hand the weapon the buff from jellyfish shield is removed.
The see-through head is extremely light, but its flesh is supple, providing absolutely no protection from piercing attacks.
Although the text says that "It provides absolutely no protection from piercing attacks", being a 100% physical shield, it seems to block piercing attacks.
Where to Find Elden Ring Jellyfish Shield
The Jellyfish Shield Shield can be found at the following location:
- On a broken wagon next to a corpse surrounded by four Jellyfish, directly north of the Foot of the Four Belfries Site of Grace. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Jellyfish Shield Notes & Tips
- Shield Skill: Contagious Fury
- This shield cannot be infused with Ashes of War.
- Can be buffed with Magic and Consumables.
- Sell Value:
200
- Despite its description stating it provides "Absolutely no protection from piercing attacks" it does in fact offer its 100% physical block rate against piercing/thrusting attacks.
- Contagious Fury boosts all damage by 20% for 30 seconds.
- You can surprisingly stack the buff with a jellyfish shield in each hand if you two-hand the left one, use Contagious Fury, then switch to holding both shields and use the ash of war again, this time using the right-hand shield. Of course, you can't use any weapons while holding two jellyfish shields but it does boost the damage of consumables if you want to be cheeky and kill a boss with throwing knives.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.
- Bug: Can two-hand any weapon and keep the Contagious Fury buff active. Can also switch out the shield for anything else in the left-hand and retain the buff.)
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09.1, the above bug has been fixed.

After some testing you can still have the jellyfish shield buff and use ashes of war of you put the shield in your right hand and the weapon/casting item in the left but you still can't 2-hand your weapon and keep the buff so be aware of that when making your choice.
- Anonymous
Useless since the nerf since the buff disappears the moment you put the shield on your back, which means you can´t use the weapon art of your melee weapon since it is blocked by the buff of the shield so the only use is now for pure mages but how often do yo usee a pure mage carrying a big ass shield which needs points into strength..
- Anonymous
Just let us keep the buff while two handing. Obviously no multi hand glitch or even switching off the shield. Literally just allowing us to twohand the dang thing and use our weapon. End rant. Love you folks <3
- Anonymous
Nerfed: You must have the Jellyfish Sheild on your character and NOT two-handing any weapon to retain the Contagious Fury Buff.
- Anonymous
Still messes with catchflame damage despite being "fixed". just more proof From is incompetent

And back to being a shield only really useful for mage builds

1.09.1 fixed the buff stacking bug with the jellyfish shield. Once again to receive the buff you need to not only keep the shield equipped, but you need keep it on your hand, can't even be on your back or you lose the buff.

- Anonymous
Patch fixed the bug. Unfortunately this includes putting jelly on your back. I was hoping that part at least would stay. I totally understood it going away when switching out the weapon, but I felt on the back was ok like a lot of other buffs. And your back was red! Was super fun on a colossal sword build! Bright side FGMS and GW work for spells/incantations again.

Bug: Can two-hand any weapon and keep the Contagious Fury buff active. Can also switch out the shield for anything else in the left-hand and retain the buff.)
That's not a bug.
- Anonymous
Bugged atm. While buff is in effect some spells deal no damage but still stagger and proc status. The frenzy spells deal no damage while the buff is active. Take caution everyone.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Hope it stays as it is, it is great that you can remove it now
- Anonymous
As of 1.09, buff doesn't disappear if you two-hand with shield on your back.
- Anonymous
if the ash of war is bugged then the oath of vengeance ash of war is too

How badly was the damage buff nerfed in PvP, does anyone know?
- Anonymous
1.09 patch made this shield can be taken off without losing buff. Is this a bug or it's intentional?
- Anonymous
Patch 1.09 changed the Contagious Fury ash of war: The buff is now retained even if the shield is put on your back while you two-hand your right-hand weapon.
- Anonymous
On patch 1.09, you can remove the shield after applying Contagious Fury and still retain the buff. Surprisingly, left and right hand buffs are _still_ counted separately, so you can use just a single Jellyfish Shield to double buff yourself by switching hands after buffing.
- Anonymous
Just want to say that as of the latest update, the buff will stay active even when two handing a weapon. Not sure if this was intended or if it will get patched out.

Extremely powerful in pvp if you are also using lusat, great for casters in general
- Anonymous
The description on where to find it says directly north of Foot of the Four Belfries Site of Grace, but it's actually southwest of that site of grace.
- Anonymous
probably the most broken buff in the game, solely because it doesn't override anything.
- Anonymous
Ok hear me out, blue dancer build using a 2h jellyfish shield as the main weapon
- Anonymous
It may have been stealth nerfed, I tried buffing with the shield then putting it on my back, the buff immediately went away.
- Anonymous
Always wrote this off as a joke item until I tried it on a caster. All I can say is praise the Jelly Lord! This shield is great. Low weight and investment, amazing damage boost to ALL damage so long as you keep the shield out and it only costs 9 FP. You can even buff the shield itself with Shield Grease or Scholars Shield without any buff canceling. Also it glows BRIGHT when you stack buffs on it lol.
Final note to reiterate how silly this thing is - you can stack this shield's Ash of War on top of Golden Vow/Rallying Cry, Flame Grant me Strength and Shrouding Crystal Tears. Makes my Healer do 80 Faith Damage and then some while only having 42 Faith. Throw on Fire damage boosting Talismans and an Oil Pot and watch your Giantsflame Take Thee nuke things for 4k.
- Anonymous
It's kinda insane how much you can do with this shield: buff your pulley crossbow's power with it, make shieldpoking even stronger, or just outright 2h it to stagger bosses with sheer strength by virtue of it being a greatshield -- and that's just scratching the surface.
Oh and did l mention this has the lowest weight and stat requirements for a 100% physical defense greatshield? It's low-key nutty.
- Anonymous
can be made into a decent shield if applied with scholar's shield buff
- Anonymous
DOes anmyone knows if the Buff can be combined or the buff increases with the Alexander Talisman?
- Anonymous
You can use the ornamental sword special r2 with this shield’s skill active, since the swords stay buffed and keep the r2 when switched to onehanded.
- Anonymous
So this description says it, "provides absolutely no protection from piercing attacks". Maybe this is in reference to certain ashes of war, like Impaling Thrust and Piercing Fang. Those AoW state that they will deal damage through guarding opponents, maybe this shield takes more damage in that scenario. Just a hunch.
- Anonymous
So if you only get the effect when you buff, why is there a red glow around you all the time?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
"...scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity..." What is the dexterity scale?
- Anonymous
this thing is a pretty big noob magnet, idk why. I regulary see fat rolling hosts with 0 clue what they're doing carrying this thing.
- Anonymous
Being able to use my ash from my weapon while using this, and having to 2h it to use the buff really would be more preferable. As it is, its basically a caster shield that requires too much str to be usable by most casters
- Anonymous
I used this shield with my melee build… by carrying my jellybro on my back while I two handed all my weapons and took all the damage myself. Didn’t want to hurt my friend you see.
- Anonymous
I don't think it mentions this here but if you have one of these in each hand and you use the ash of war of one of them, it'll turn both of them red. I'm fairly certain it's just cosmetic, apparently you can stack the buffs but just using one will turn both red. It's pretty cool cause that's how the jellies work.

I've never understood what upgrading a shield actually does. I'm at roundtable hold and when I compare the current stats to their values after the upgrade it seems like the increase from one upgrade level to the next only improves the shield's attack power not it's guard boost.
What I'm having some trouble with is a brass shield+16 and has the 'barricade shield" AoW shows a guard boost of 64 instead of the 56 all the other brass shields have. But that doesn't change the fact they show no increase in guard boost in the 'strengthen armament' menu. Can anyone explain this please?
- Anonymous
It wasn't in that location and I couldn't find it in the places the other comments mentioned.
- Anonymous
I will stick with rallying standard. The meme vibes are too strong with this one.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
There have been a couple other comments without responses about this. The shield was never there for me. Is there another way to get it or to re-initiate the item? I'd love to get this but it seems there's a glitch. Please help!!!

- Anonymous
I think this is the classic Fromsoft reminder that some item descriptions are straight up lies (which imo has subtle lore implications as well, as they do patch descriptions when they’re unintentionally incorrect)
- Anonymous
The no protection from piercing attacks part is correct. It's not about the damage type "piercing" but attacks which actually pierce through shields. Some of those "can damage through shields" attacks don't deal 100% damage if used against a shield. If the defender uses the jellyfish shield all physical damage attacks which deal partial damage through shields will deal full damage instead.
- Anonymous
In addition to the active buff this is also the lightest greatshield with 100 physical reduction, according to this wiki.

"The greatshields in this game are trash"
*see's Jellyfish Shield*
"The greatshields in this game are the best"
- Anonymous
For some reason using the weapon art makes it so you lose no stamina when blocking; I was testing this out on the Omens in the shunning grounds. I wonder if it's a bug or a secret effect?
- Anonymous
It is the only color that is visible from the white player phantoms that are wielding it
- Anonymous
Says it boosts damage by 20% but my jumping r2 goes from 950 to 1500 when I’m buffed. I have the jump talisman on but that still seems weird? Anyway I’m not complaining.

A jellyfish is basically a soaking wet tissue paper floating in water… not sure how that of all things inspired a greatshield???
- Anonymous
Used Dark Moon Greatsword and Jellyfish shield. Boost to damage with the shield can be used at the same time as R2 attacks with Moonlight Greatsword weapon art
- Anonymous
Commander’s Standard is better once you have the equip requirement. Though more hefty FP cost, u can now switch off it and gain 20% additional damage negation.

The best part isn't even the buff, it's the low requirements and weight (for a greatshield).
- Anonymous

Maybe it's common knowledge, but in-case anyone else was unaware like me before testing, you DO have to meet the minimum requirements for the shield to actually use the AoW. It is functional to simply two-hand it in your off hand, activate the effect, then to back to 1h + shield without losing the effect.
That said, the absolute minimum requirements to use the AoW assuming you are fine with the 2h gimmick is 14 STR / 14 DEX

Weird bug with this when dual wielding these and using the weapon art. If you use the weapon art, both shields turn red. Makes it look like it won't stack, but if you two-hand the right one and use the WA, then use the left, both shields stay red but you get another damage boost. Not that there's really a good reason to dual wield these since the base damage is very low, but they stack multiplicatively for a 44% boost.
A genuinely good way to dual wield this is with another greatshield with a good weapon art. Weapon art priority is right hand shield > left hand shield > right hand weapon, so you can only use this to buff the damage of shields', torchs' and Grafted Dragon's weapon art damage. Pop the buff in the right hand, then use one eyed greatsheild/visage shield/something with shield crash/Grafted Dragon for stupidly high damage when stacking with other buffs.

I’ve noticed that when I come out of caves there are random jellyfish floating around the entrance that weren’t there before. Is the shield doing this?
- Anonymous
where did they get the image for this? it looks completely different ingame
- Anonymous
It is definitely not where the map says it is, I have this shield and I found it in East Liurnia close to where the giant blue spirit Troll and its army are fighting the Godrick soldiers. It's where a bunch of jellyfish are floating around random cargo in the middle of the field, that's the best I can explain it.

Is it possible that they could nerf this to be more in line with the description - specifically, no protection from piecing attacks? With how damage negation is calculated on shields (opposed to armor), isn’t it an all or nothing physical negation? That would make a piecing nerf seem unlikely, unless I am missing something.
Tried to see if this would work with Loretta's Greatbow and was happily surprised to see that it in fact does. It straight up buffs the spell whilst the effect is active. The shields goes on your back (still red indicating the buff) and buffs the spell damage. I'm assuming it will be the same for other spells as well. When 2-handing a weapon however, the buff DOES go away.

Skill name:Contagious fury, in laymans term it means "you jelly?"
- Anonymous
I use it on my Tank-Vagabond and its just awesome, I dont think I need a new one until I finish the game. Great DMG buff, blocks 100% phy damage and its freakin' easy to get - perfect
- Anonymous
this is really fun on a quality build since you are sword and boarding it anyways, the art makes your 1h hits like 2hs lol
- Anonymous
Is this a bug? I went to get the shield on a new character and instead I got the Ice Crest one.
- Anonymous
Might end up using this in the future, now that FromSoft have murdered the Turtle Shell (no longer 100% physical plus they've utterly ruined barricade shield), but I'm afraid I'm gonna need a lot more END until I can handle so much weight without fat-rolling or sacrificing armour.
- Anonymous
Jelly buff + Bloodflame Blade + Nightcavalry Flail has been working very, very well so far. Simple pre buff process and easy rebuffing due to low FP cost of both. Planning to switch to Rivers or Eleonora's once I get there, but until then this shield is great with basically everything. Plus, glow red.

Use this with any of the Envoy horns and make the Spongebob build that you were always destined to create.

Why do they show all the useless stats no shield user cares about for every level but not the guard boost change? Anyone know what it's lvl 10 guard boost is?

Walk up to fogwall:
Drink electricity and faith boost flask:
>Cast golden vow
>Cast flame grant me strength
>Cast electrify armament on treespear w/ert tree seal
>Switch seal back to jelly shield n cast it's 20% boost.
My AR is now 1200 at weapon lvl 15 run up to boss with r2 charge, break their stagger crit them for 2k, while they are on ground recast flame give me strength, repeate.. jk most bosses are dead by then
>Mfw faith builds work as intended
>Mfw buff paladin isn't just viable it stomps
>Mfw fromsoft patch's out hoarfrost stomp n SoNF and it doesn't effect me because the light of grace flows through me and I am it's lightning forged sentinel, sent to the lands between by the will of an outer god and thus am untouched as my kills are obtained rightly and such that each life taken widens the smile of my lord ever greater!
Praise the erd tree!
Praise the two fingers!
Praise the light of grace!
But most of all praise this obscenely op jelly shield! May it's fury ever coat my golden spear and send my foes back to the depth fron whence they crawled from!
I've read this works with sorceries, does anyone know if it impacts Incantations?
- Anonymous
20% damage for 30 sec. Seems to apply to non-weapon damage such as spells. Cast time is quite fast, though not as fast as barricade shield. You're also not blocking during the animation, unlike barricade shield where you are.
- Anonymous
I logged in today and went to get the shield and its not there?

I did some testing because I was really curious just how this buff works, as it seems to be very unique.
The buff also seems to apply to weapon greases applied to your weapons. Tested on my +17 Banished Knight Greatsword, normal applicant of the drawstring fire grease buffed my weapon from 452 to 562 or +110. However, WITH the buff from the shield applied my weapon went from 542 to 674 meaning with the buff from the shield active the drawstring grease increased it by +132.
Also, this buff seems to work in tandem with others, for instance if you two-hand your weapon first and apply Sacred Order and then the Jellyfish buff, they stack.

Not worth at all. Due to sole reason: You will lose you main weapon skills. Maybe it's good if you wanna go full metal jacket mode, just with the buff from shield, and normal/heavy wpn attacks.
- Anonymous
It is possible to triple buff dmg. Potions provides magic dmg, then you buff your weapon, then you jellyfish for attack bonus.
- Anonymous
What is the min str required to activate the buff with the shield in the 2 hand position? 14 right now, still not enough.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
So you can't apply a new AoW to this, but can you remove it at least if you want to use your weapons AoW instead?
Does anyone know the max guard boost? I'm having trouble picking this over another shield since I can't use barricade on it.

It feels like a lot of the unique items and spells in souls games are rushed, where you can tell from the description that things were supposed to function a certain way but actually don't. Not only the piercing defense on this shield, but thing's like the staff of the avatar's WA stating that it has the "the most powerful of all the Ground Slam skills" even though most of the comments seem to verify this just isn't true. I'm guessing this is because uniques are the last part of development, but I hope they actually go back and fix these things instead of pretending they aren't there
- Anonymous
Yes it does buff spells. Tested with spells, Loretta Greatbow sorcery, Lusat staff +9, at 73 int and drank flask with magic attack buff. WITHOUT contagious fury, 1466 damage. WITH contagious fury, 1760 damage. pretty darn good
- Anonymous
Confirmed with Carian Regall Scepter +9 and jellyfish shield. Casted Glintstone Pebble sorcery.
WITH contagious fury buff, 909 on a random goat
WITHOUT contagious fury buff, 758 on a random goat
That is around a 20% increase, which is significant.
For context, I am at 73 intelligence.
- Anonymous
Should be noted that this buff works with enchantments on your main-weapon, so you can double-dip for buffs, simply apply the buff to the weapon first, switch to the shield and apply the shield buff after.
You can still use the buff if you equip the shield in your main hand and two-hand the shield, use the buf then single hand again this allowing you to use your aow or whatever you want to spam.
