Greatshields | Elden Ring Wiki

Greatshields are a type of Shield in Elden Ring. Greatshields usually weigh a decent amount and provide the best protection in the game. In exchange, they cannot be used to parry (barring certain unique greatshield skills). However, they are commonly compatible with Shield Bash to allow the user to strike without breaking their guard. Most attacks with greatshields that strike the ground will stagger lighter enemies nearby in a very small radius; this can be observed with regular attacks or dash attacks versus weaker bipedal enemies such as Wandering Nobles.

Greatshields, while guarding, also have the ability to cause a lot of attacks barring heavy guard-breaking ones to bounce off them, interrupting a lot of enemy combos and opening them up to guard counters. This also synergizes well with their high innate Guard Boost, meaning your guards consume very little Stamina. You can also use greatshields with Thrusting Swords, Heavy Thrusting Swords, or Spears for a stamina-friendly combo that lets you attack without dropping your guard.

Greatshields can be modified by Ashes of War, allowing you to change their Skill and their Damage Reductions when Blocking.

  With a bit of param tampering (EquipParamGem to be precise), (Golden) Parry/Carian Retaliation/Thops' Barrier AoWs can be made available for these. Surprisingly enough, they work flawlessly, both in animation and actual parrying. Though parrying with a giant slab of stone does look quite silly

  Super fun in PvP, and a lot of your opponents wont be familiar with the moveset. The crouch attack especially is very fast, so its good for rollcatches.
  The damage is low and the range is short, so dont expect it to perform super well, it is a shield after all.

  What I really hate about great shields (apart from golden gr8shield) is the tarnished character looks like they are only using it to protect their..tarnished parts. Why is there head and neck completely exposed? Looks so weird

  Shield poking is in a great spot right now imo, if you want to spam it, you really need to spec your entire build around it, but otherwise, its a decent mixup move that works best when used as a follow up to punish people that try to challenge your attack.

  They're worse at turtling now, but still incredibly versatile tools for PvE and PvP. They can counter lighter weapons quite handily and even stand up to bigger weapons with shield grease and barricade shield. You can also go the opposite route and use them as a weapon (personal fave is visage shield). I give them a 9/10, fun and functional.

  I think they could lower str requirements on most greatshields a little bit since the guardboost difference is small compared to the best medium shields (best medium shields 14 str 55 guardboost / greatshields 30 str 65 guardboost).
  The tradeoff isn't that good when you can use barricade shield on Mshields too and it would let greatshield users put more points into endurance.

  Kinda sucks that this page has the shields offensive info listed instead of their defensive properties.
  Those are shields... I'm aware you can use shields to attack, hell even do a shields-only run, but to list here their offensive properties only rather than their defensive properties is clearly pointless.

  Anybody ever used one of these as a weapon? Like an actual non-defensive weapon? I think they're pretty useful if you're going into a mine and have to deal with an enemy (eg: miner) that won't budge from anything short of Strike damage.

  All these stupidly high STR requirements make my head hurt. The limiting factor for Greatshields should be WEIGHT, not STR requirement, because a greatshield is heavy but it's not likely you're swinging most of them around. Besides, given that stamina and equipment load are now under a single stat, it makes sense that you get a fatter stamina bar to go with the heavy shield.

  Looks like the new patch has buffed some or all of the greatshields' guard boost, probably to compensate for the Barricade nerf.
  
  Manor Towershield now starts at 67 Guard Boost, Wooden Greatshield at
  56, Gilded Greatshield 69, Ant's Skull Plate 63, Lansworn's Shield 60, Crucible Hornshield 60, Dragonclaw Shield 61. Jellyfish Shield 52. Golden Beast Crest Shield now reaches 65 at +18.

  Fingerprint has Madness building up 70. If you make it Blood it goes Madness 70 and Blood loss 83. Just put shield bash on it and its the best shield to use.

  Found Haligtreecrest Greatshield. Start at Sewercanal Grace in Haligtree go outside and work your way to the building left by going over the tree branches and rafters you can drop through a hole and you can find the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman go outside of the building and go right where you see a couple of Knights just standing there one of them drops the shield. You can look up a guide to get the Talisman and that should already give a good idea what i mean.

  I summoned someone to co-op Melania, Blade of Miquella yesterday. They had a shield that looked like a big slab of rock. I messaged and asked what shield they were using, and they said it's called the "Fingerprint Stone Shield". Does anyone have any information on this shield? I can't seem to find anything about it anywhere

  There is also the Cuckoo great shield. Gorgeous shield! I farmed mine from a Cairan horseback rider south of the Nothern Liurna lake shore grace. (south of giant blacksmith). Not quite the stats of Gilded but a decent bit lighter.
