Golden Retaliation |
---|
Ready the shield to unleash its protective incantation.
This will dispel sorceries and incantations, retaliating with golden power. |
Golden Retaliation is a Skill in Elden Ring. Golden Retaliation is a special skill only available for an individual Shield, and cannot be applied to other Shields via Ashes of War.
How to get Golden Retaliation in Elden Ring
- This Skill can only be acquired by equipping Erdtree Greatshield.
Elden Ring Golden Retaliation Guide, Notes & Tips
- This is a Unique Skill
- FP Cost: 4
- This Skill is not Chargeable
- Intercepts a single magical projectile and fires a homing projectile in return. The projectile deals holy damage and scales with the upgrade level of the shield and marginally with the player's Faith stat, but not any other stats.
- The active parry window is shorter than the animation that accompanies the ash of war. Try to press L2 so that the spell strikes right after you lift up the shield.
- Due to recovery frames it is difficult to parry multiple spells cast by the same source. During PvP spells such as Glintstone Pebble and others with a similar cast-speed will likely give too little spacing between them to parry multiple spells in a row.
- Ash of War damage scales with weapon upgrade level and marginally with the player's Faith, but not with any other stats.
- Talismans like Shard of Alexander and Sacred Scorpion Charm increase the damage of the projectile.
- The projectile fired by Golden Retaliation cannot be intercepted by another Golden Retaliation.
- The player's own spells/incantations can be reflected by this, so Discus of Light and Triple Rings of Light, which automatically return to the caster after reaching their max travel distance can set this skill up. Since all of them deal holy damage, you get great value out of the Sacred Scorpion Charm and Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear with this set up.
- The projectile deals reduced damage the farther it travels due to severe damage dropoff, but the Arrow's Reach Talisman can alleviate this. (In this case, the talisman only reduces the damage dropoff penalty, leaving the actual range of the projectile unchanged.)
- If multiple projectiles are approaching in quick succession, this skill will only intercept one of the projectiles. The rest will still connect.

I wish there was a spell that fired a simple beam of holy light like this skill. There aren't many good holy damage incantations and none of them really let me play into classic archetypes.

The spears from sacred phalanx sadly do NOT trigger retaliation.

What if you could parry more than one hit and go full auto rocket launcher when hit by stars of ruin

I love that wing of astel ignored this. It is the only way for sorcerers to get past it lol

Very good for the DST, since you can bait his horse fireball and get a good bit of damage in

I feel like they designed this attack to keep people from cheesing the first tree sentinel with magic right out the gate. And I love that.

I'd like it if you could put that on all greatshields. Would make it slightly easier to fool magic users into a false sense of security.

i did some testing regarding the range, max damage (fall off) and how much of a difference the "arrows's reach" talisman does:
units are in medium backsteps:
ca. 4 backsteps from the target it reaches the max damage
with the arrow's reach talisman that is extended to ca. 6 and a half backsteps
while the projectile itself travels max 8 and a half backsteps
so basically:
2 backsteps from its max reach towards the target are enough with the arrow's reach talisman to get max damage
otherwise 4 backsteps and a half are needed
also for damage comparison:
1239 was for me the max damage
743 was the min damage
also it did ca. 825 at the point where it would reach max damage with the arrow's reach talisman

I don't understand the part about triple rings of light, what would be the point of parrying my own incantations?
Is it known if the skill is activated by melee-based spells? I know the wiki specifies projectiles but I think additional clarifying would help. Such as carian slicer, gavel of haima, or ancient dragon lightning spear. I'll test it later if I get the chance and update accordingly. If it doesn't proc off of those types, the gavel of haima might be a good counter if you can hit it as it recently got increased stamina damage against blocking opponents.

Has anyone been brave enough to try this against bolt of gransacks?
If so, does it work?

Golden Retaliation does scale with Strength and Faith after testing.
Arrow’s Reach Talisman also affects the damage falloff of the projectile, though Arrow’s Sting does not boost damage.

What is the timing on this? I tried several times in pvp and it never worked. Is there a patch that messed with its moonveil counter?

If this is used against Elden Beast, does he regain his health? (Given it is holy damage)

Can it intercept dragon breath attacks? Or bestial incantations, such as bestial sling or rock throw? Since, well, they are projectiles, even though they are physical.

So we can get a magic version of this, Carian Retaliation, which scales with INT but it is also an ash if war so you can put it on any shield and also give better INT scaling through the same ash of war. But a faith build has to pump 30 points into STR to use this. Cool

Does upgrading the shield improve the damages of the GOLDEN RETALIATION ?

is it just me or does this shield shoot a golden projectile regardless of parrying spells?
saw some ridiculous golden beams hitting me for 800 a piece from a guy without actually using spells on them

Golden retaliation also works while you're poisoned! Interesting...

Does this WA work against Moonveil WA? Cuz if it does... hihi watch out dual katana invaders

Apparently this can be combined with Fire's Deadly Sin to replicate the Crystal Ring Shield's ranged attack from DS1.

I noticed if you use Multilayered Rings of Light and cast it on the ground, seems you can parry until it works since it is a multi hit.
