Block it. That's all you have to do to counter it. Medium weapon or higher, just hold block when they get close and punish the follow-up attack.

I think this ash was probably designed to give light roll builds a way to compete with high poise. I think it serves that purpose really well. The main issue is you can put it on anything. IMO opinion it should be limited to medium weapons, since it's not a great way to give those builds an edge if every build can use it.

In Elden Ring pvp has become mostly centered around big weapons and the abuse of their hyperarmor. Essentially, two handing large weapons has no downsides when compared to the last game with pvp, DS3. Newcomers have gotten used to the fact they can mash R1 without any knowledge of spacing or frame data, and this ash punishes that playstyle. I guess that's where the hate comes from. Don't get me wrong, this AoW definitely isn't balanced, but I don't think it's OP. I think it's one of the few options in game that let players counter large weapons and a less-than-deal netcode.

Im pretty sure this skill is silent for npcs, I tried to stance break the giant outside godricks arena for fun and the exile soldiers didnt notice anything untill i riposted it then they turned around.

            • This thing has great potential in PVE, it can use to stun almost anything that is human size.
              Banished knights? stunned.
              Omens? stunned.
              Battlemages? stunned.
On top of that this thing has frame 1 hyperarmor and a R1 true combo in pvp!

Don’t think this is broken? That’s ok, if you have poise, I’ll get 3 slicer hits on you before you poise break and can roll away. And you know I got the cold banished knight halberd so I can mindlessly joust forward and mindlessly L2 anyone who tries to flank or attack. Star shower, Godfrey icon and Lusat head piece to ruin anyone who can space.

Easiest way to knock down the fallingstar beast after Flame of Redmanes' nerf. Can slap it on everything and has style

I do a lot of co-op and I value fashion over efficiency so I run very low poise armor. Most times when an experienced invader invades they just equip quickstep thrusting sword to kill me. This shuts that off. It's so satisfying to block those tryhards cheesers tactics with this.

You can't convince me that it's not intentional that all the storm ashes look really unassuming and simple, but in reality are the largest salt generators in the entire game. It's legit hilarious when some guy transcends into the manifestation of the outer god of death lasers to shoot magic from his eyes that can dissolve the order of the entire universe, only for him to get knocked flat on his ass by someone stomping the ground very hard.

shuts down pretty much everything, but fists especially. all these caestus r2 spammers getting decked by my free gugs r1

I haven’t tried this in PvP but I can definitely believe it’d be obnoxious given how the Halberd-wielding Banished Knight in Stormveil uses it. He throws it out if you hang out close to him and you can’t dodge through it and it stuns for so long that he gets a free hit off it, which means you have to stay back from him in general.

(Speaking of PvP not PvE) Storm Stomp, otherwise known as the "utterly safe and free damage" Ash of War. Just cast it in someone's face and they won't be able to dodge it unless they're light-rolling.

                            • Anonymous

People will try their best to rationalize why this ability isn't broken in PvP, but it 100% is. You can literally hyperarmor and counter storm stomp with storm stomp, it's absolutely stupid. I tried dozens of different AoW in PvP and none trivialized it as much as storm stomp. Unless your opponent can hyperarmor through the stun this ability can do, there's not much to be done about it. Definitely needs an adjustment but not a major one.

I like how many people hate this (and other skills) in PvP, seeming to forget that ER is a PvE game with optional PvP.

Some skills seem overpowered in PvP because player-type enemies are but a single variety in the vast array of encounters that ER has to offer, and those skills are designed to counter exactly those types of enemies.

You don't bring a fly swatter to a gunfight, and you don't bring a gun to try and take down flies.

Its a shame that top player community didn't ban this WA, it's very powerful in terms of cast speed, range, and storm duration time. Either nerf range & speed, or make it not be able do any damage. Combo availability is a great aspect of this WA, but other than that, it is too powerful. It is just very boring to see so many top players are using the same veteran greatsword storm-stomp build to abuse other good players when comes to hardcore PVP. That's being said, a lot of WA need to be nerfed to improve the balance.

Funny people in the comments saying this is OP because it combos a R1 or R2(rarely) while there are weapon arts that can reduce your HP by 70-80% easily with Alexander shard. I swear. This does not even stagger and becomes useless if someone has 111 poise or above, which can be achieved at RL125.

This doesn't need nerfing, it's pretty easy to dodge as you can see the character animation of lifting their foot up. Don't spam attacks and play smart. Things don't always need to be nerfed to just to make the game more convenient for you and you not wanting to learn or adapt. Now the Rivers of Blood...now that's nerf worthy

This thing is becoming stupid, sure you combo into r1s fine, even r2s I wont argue. However you should not be able to combo this into incantations, especially considering how absurd the damages of incants have and how easy to just spam this. Even less reason since incantations have been buffed with hyperarmor

They should nerf this, people are abusing it to deliver so-called "combo". It has no reason to stun you so bad compare to its cast speed, and player can even follow it up with a two-handed heavy weapon attack. = =

i have been searching everywhere for an answer but did anyone else not get the storm stomp out of the chest? I opened it and got the knife but the ash of war is not in my inventory.

                                              • If you didn't know this skill in the network test was a combo starter for greatswords (didn't test any other weapon with it)

you could've L2'd and then R1 and it would combo
