Chilling Mist

chilling mist
Coat armament in frost, and then slash, spreading frigid mist forwards. The armament retains its frost for a while.

Chilling Mist is a Skill in Elden Ring. Chilling Mist is a regular skill that can be found in Ashes of War that can be used on many melee armaments. Updated to Patch 1.07

How to get Chilling Mist

Elden Ring Chilling Mist Guide, Notes & Tips

  • This is an Ash of War Skill, associated with the Ash of War: Chilling Mist.
  • FP Cost: 14 on use.
  • This Skill is not Chargeable
  • Upon activation, the user raises their armament (weapon) and coats it with frost, before performing a sweep in front of them that releases a cold mist in a small area.
    • The frost coating counts as a weapon buff.
    • This skill consumes FP before the sweep and mist are performed. If the user is interrupted but has consumed FP, only the weapon buff will be performed.
    • Consumes approximately 30 stamina.
  • The weapon is buffed with a 60 Frost buildup per hit effect, after consuming FP.
    • This buff lasts for 40 seconds after use.
    • This buff is not reflected in the weapon's stat screen.
    • This buff stacks with the innate status buildup the weapon has (if any), including frost.
    • The buff only applies to the weapon in the right hand.
  • The sweep attack deals aproximately 100% more damage than a light attack.
    • It also applies 120 frostbite on hit.
    • This sweep can be aimed in any direction before its release.
  • After the sweep, the weapon leaves a stationary mist that continues to apply 120 more frost buildup per tick.
    • The mist lingers for 5 seconds upon appearing.
    • Has a small area of effect that can affect multiple enemies if clustered together.
  • If used without FP:
    • No weapon buff is added.
    • The sweep deals the same damage as a light attack, and doesn't have additional buildup.
    • No mist is released.

NOTES: This Skill was changed with Patch 1.07 as follows:

  • Motion speed has been increased.
  • Duration of the weapon's frostbite effect has been increased from 20 to 40 seconds.

Does the example video show the changes from Patch 1.07?
Thank you in advance for the yes or no response, only if you know for certain.

Casting black flame blade on your weapon after using this ash causes the frost mist to also do the black flame tick damage. You can then hit them with said buffed flame weapon to reset the frost.

        It's pretty nutty.

so if I apply chilling mist on my nagakiba and then put it to my left hand in my double katana build, then the frosbite buff on hit will not apply ?

          • A +12 Cold Shamshir with Chilling Mist will apply 145 Frostbite per hit, which will proc basically every target in the Level 60 range in 2 hits, on top of dealing split physical and magic damage which is much better because of the lower defense values that would otherwise make split damage suboptimal at meta levels. It's honestly kind of busted at lower levels all the way up to level 60, which is weird considering you can get this within 10 minutes of starting the game if you go straight for it after you get Torrent, and the Shamshir is available as a pick-up in Limgrave. In fact, if you were an evil bastard, you could abuse this at level 10 with a +2 Cold Shamshir if you really wanted to, although that might be balanced out by Level 713 "downscaled" Phantoms.

If you saw someone using this on a curved sword in pvp,RUN! The pontiff knight curved sword still curses the fromsoftware games,we can't hide

Really liking this on a zweihander / int build, even with high int i find i hardly end up using spells very often because the zwei with this ash handles most everything so well already

Double this enchant and put them on 2 forked greatswords. Add ravens cape and claw talisman. Now you have +30% damage poise-breaking jump attacks that do bleed and frost damage. I keep mine at +3, rune level 21, so that any new player can summon me and these things shred pretty much anything that comes at us from beginning of stormveil to killing godrick with no flasks remaining because you just do too much damage and stagger. Enchant both weapons with extra frost for bosses, invaders, big enemies, or whatever, or do so in combat, including the incredibly powerful chilling mist cloud and (strong greatsword) attack, open any bossfight by carefully deleting 20% of their health bar in 2 attacks and frostbiting them.

I like to run cold weapons so this ash is very important for a little extra drip in PvE. Also gives me a reason to use all those firebombs I keep crafting.

New S tier build in 1.07: Pure strength with 25 faith. Cold twinned knight swords, two-handed, with chilling mist AoW. Golden vow, fires deadly sin, black flame. Rotten winged sword insignia, millicents prosthesis, godskin swaddling cloth, green turtle talisman. Thorny cracked tear, opaline hard tear. This build will shred anything not immune to frostbite

Other cold weapons that work great on this build: greatsword, giants crusher, brick hammer or rusted anchor

Apparently that "sweep" animation is very damaging. I put it on a magic clayman harpoon +24 and on a 69 int character, it deals 1.2k damage on hit and that's before the frost proc. Before 1.07, I don't remember it being like that. It seemed like it only stunned the enemy back and did no damage.

Malenia dodges the lingering mist like any other projectile... then promptly steps right back into it to get popped by frostbite super easily

                          • Anonymous

My favorite AOW. I use this on my Zweihander weilding mage INT build. Even though I only have 19 poise, the sweep never gets interrupted because it acts as a two handed colossal swing. Deals insanely high damage when the uninterruptible sweep lands, adds instant frost bite 9/10 times even when i use the magic affinity not cold, plus serves as area control in pvp when I need space to chug a flask of cerulean tears or cast a longer timed spell.

Great against Malenia. Infuse your weapon as STR/DEX/QUAL... whichever is the strongest and with this ash. The mist and frost weapon buff procs on Malenia in no time. Then switch to a bleed weapon to bleed her while she's frosted.

Finally beat malenia and it was thanks to this. After trying every thinkable combo of weapons and ashes of wars on my pure str build I put this on my claymore and absolutely dumped on her with it lol

Can be used to buff the Glintblade Phalanx Ash of War with frost damage.

Cast Phalanx, switch weapons, then cast this before the glintblades fire.

If you cast this on your right hand weapon, can a crossbow on your left hand get the frostbite effect (similar to how bloodflame or seppuku adds bleed to crossbows)?

Actually unironically a really good Ash of War now that 1.04 hit. It was always quite powerful, a real boss buster thanks to the Frostbite ailment but it lacked the cast speed to go off reliably, since 1.04 though it has that speed and it's now a very good Ash of War.

I can’t find it at the ruins :( idk what’s going on but I’ve tried everything. And no I didn’t find it and sell it already. I don’t sell ashes at all

It says it isn't chargeable but you can definitely charge it, needs to be fixed. I literally second-guessed myself and did a comparison in game and you can charge it

can confirm this frost buff does not replace any other ailment your weapon inflicts, it stacks. might be obvious but well
