Unleash the power of the Rune of Death to fire off a blade-like projectile.
In addition to dealing immediate damage, the blade reduces the enemy's maximum HP and continues to wear down HP for a while.

Blade of Death is a Skill in Elden Ring. Blade of Death is a Unique skill for the Black Knife.  It shares an animation with Blade of Gold, the unique skill for the Blade of Calling. It allows user to fire a projectile and deal additional damage. This also has a unique feature that debuffs a few enemy stats. Updated to Patch 1.07.

  • This is a Unique Skill
  • FP Cost: 25
  • This Skill is not Chargeable
  • This Skill cannot be Parried (the Destined Death projectile can be Parried with Carian Retaliation)
  • Reduces enemy max HP by 10% for 15 seconds.
  • Saps enemy HP for 5 seconds
  • Deals 10 stance damage.
  • Damage type is Holy Damage and scales purely with Faith. Damage can be increased by Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Sacred Scorpion Charm, as well as other generic attack buffs like Golden Vow and Howl of Shabriri.
  • The debuff stacks with either the Black Blade incantation OR Destined Death but NOT both.
  • The range of Blade of Death is longer than Reduvia Blood Blade and equivalent to Sorceries and Incantations.
  • Stealth attacks with Blade of Death will do additional damage.
  • The burning effect from the Blade of Death weapon art, like status effects, will go through i-frames.
  • Both this and the Blade of Calling have substantial hyper-armor once the player is in the air.
  • Comparison to Blade of Gold, Blade of Gold values are represented first and in yellow, Blade of Death values are represented second and in red: FP Cost: 17/25, Poise damage (PVE/PVP): 180/100, 180/100, CC type: Knock back/Stagger, Total AR 421/430 (50 FTH), 443/446 (80 FTH), Holy Damage Motion Values: 145/180, Actual damage at 80 faith and Upgrade level +10: 1323/1150.
    • In short, Blade of Gold deals more damage that blade of Death at a cheaper FP cost, but Blade of Death applies a DoT and a debuff.
  • Note: This Skill was changed with Patch 1.07 as follows: Effect duration that reduces maximum HP has been increased.

      tl;dr no dot is not holy, it is % dmg, but whatgives?!

      The BOLT is holy yes, the DoT however is not. I have tested with Marika's + Radagon's Soreseal; Magic+Fire+Lightning+Sacred Scorpion, Not even Shard of Alexander affects the DoT portion. It behaves like a % DoT, just like someone commented on. So I decided this is not documented thoroughly enough and decided to delve deeper.

      I compared the DoT with that of Black Flame incantation. Launching at an enemy, saving recording after it stoped ticking, compare the initial hit (the Holy portion of the damage for Black Knife and the Fire Portion for Black Flame; it varies with gear etc, just as you'd expect) with the final damage (Ininial hit + DoT) and then subtracting the initial hit to get the DoT dmg isolated. Then comparing that to the HP of the poor sods i decided to test this on. Which i found in a google docs on a reddit thread somewhere with datamined values in volumes that'd deter most people.       And it is by the point of me going far even as digging into actual game data that i felt my IRL madness meter starting to fill up.

      I could provide the numbers but who needs it. As for Black Fire bolt this pretty much just above 2% every time. Good old Black Flame, Nothing Beats that.

      For Blade of Death % varies. The game files does infact include % damage for the effect. Yes. 4.5% hp over 5s. (this matches my testing tho 5 s. for sure) According to the files at least.. But unlike any other % dmg in the game, it varies on regular(ish) mobs. The usual poison/rot/bleed/frost/b.flame etc varies between boss and regular enemies sure, and a bit on the rounding of the numbers, but this damn thing goes 8.1% on Troll in Stormveil, 4.2% on Colossal Fingercreeper and 3.1% on Golem in ... Cool, Cool Mountain? Snowhead? Eleum Loyce? whatever, u know the place.

      I will be back after testing this some more. But considering the wiki doesn't even mention the dot being % i felt like this needs to be rectified.

      Im probably jsut being stupid and not realizing those mobs take boss discount % dmg or smth but that % dmg does not make sense. It cant be the rounding alone. It being ,afaik, completely unaffected by any dmg increase I cared to try but also vary in damage that much bugs me to no end. If someone with less clouded mind care to weigh in on it feel free, otherwise ill post here in afew days i guess. Call me Shabriri cuz woes on me.

        For additional info: Tested this and the destined death health reduction effect on blade of death lasts for like ~40 seconds after the hp sap ends, the Black Blade incantation effect however lasts for only 15 seconds including the sap duration (13 seconds after sap ends). Why is the effect on this so much stronger then the incantation?

          Idk how well this would work on rl1 runs but I did my best to calculate more breakpoints for the AR with levels of faith that you can get from stat boosting gear, with max level black knife
          what I usually run: two fingers talisman (+5), commoner's chest piece (+1), (faith knot tear (+10), total:26 faith, gives 937.728 AR
          Max faith for wretch: two fingers talisman (+5) commoner's chest piece (+1) Greathood / haligtreeknight helm/ Imp corpse helm (+2) Marika's scarseal (+5) faith knot tear (+10) oath of vengeance (+5) godrick's great rune (+5), total: 43 faith, gives 1040.544 AR
          Max faith for confessor (for dex requirement): all the same stuff, total: 47 faith, gives 1064.736 AR
          Max faith for prophet: faith total: 49, gives 1076.832 AR
          I think when it says that it only does 430 AR, that was tested at +0 upgrade level, but I could be wrong

          TLDR: The faith scaling falls off, if you can meet the requirements, you'll deal decent damage. The overall level of the weapon matters way more.

            NOTE: The damage over time effect does NOT get boosted by e. g. Shard of Alexander or Holy Scorpion Charm, which I tested. That means it probably is percentage-based and not boostable by anything.

              I have seen people call blade of death objectively better than blade of gold. This is incorrect, as blade of gold deals vastly more damage at high faith investment (yes it doesn't have the debuff, but that mostly matters for bosses or i-frame cheese in pvp).

              I tested AoW damage on a 80 faith build with +10 weapons, with albinaurics as test subjects. Blade of gold deals 1918 damage, while blade of death deals 1667 damage.

              In conclusion, blade of death is better most of the time as others have established earlier, but blade of gold is better for high faith builds only looking for the highest burst of damage.

                This and black knife Tiche hard carried my sorry a-s through Malenia's boss fight, also a very useful aow in the overworld for enemies that are just way to annoying to fight straight up (Like the fire prelates).

                    It seems like the power of the rune of death comes in the color red, being a deep crimson red when at its highest power (With Maliketh’s uses of it) and a more faded pink at a lesser extent (when the assassins and the black blade kindreds use it).

                      While the percentage is something I see mentioned a lot, I'm noticing that on godfrey at RL1, with stat boost gear to use the weapon, I'm hitting for a specific number each hit [882]. When I use a rune arc it increases the damage to about 902. So I'm assuming that's the faith scaling. I'm not sure how this affects the percentage calculation but the damage output is consistent at least on this boss. The effect seems a little different from how tische's works, which seems more in line with the percentage.

                        Does Shard of Alexander affect the damage and sapping damage of this? I know it probably doesn't affect the HP reduction but what about the other two?

                          Can you essentially kill any boss in the game with no more than ten uses of this ash of war, or am I misunderstanding something?

                            The max health debuff seems inconsistent/bugged. It doesn't work on Godfrey's first phase but does on his second phase (which is useless at that point).

                            • I was reading the comments and to save your time, the debuff of 10% of health it's great to use in the star of the boss fight. It will drain automacally 10% and it will NOT recover after the effect has passed out, unless the boss has a way to heal (malenia). However if Tiche uses this skill, once the effect passes way, the health WILL RECOVER the 10%. So in the end, if you use it the damage is permanent, if Tiche uses, the health will recover at end of the effect. Hope this helps someone.

                                So if I open a boss fight with this, does the 10% reduction basically mean I deal 10% of their total health bar in damage immediately?

                                  What's the point of this? Reduces 10% max hp, nonstackable, for what? After 15 seconds enemy will return to max hp. It's like... I don't see the real benefit of reducing max hp. Maybe in PVP so enemy can't heal at full HP, but after 15s will be able to do again...

                                    This can be parried with carian retaliation, though you may still take the health dot if you dont time it perfectly.

                                      Something ive found quite interesting is that if you hit a late game boss with it after they've taken some damage the skill will appear to be healing the boss when in actuality its making the hp pool much shorter and therefore the hp left is a higher percentage of the total. Bet thats been confusing some of the people ive been helping as a summon!

                                              This skill is not Chargeable.

                                              Initial damage does not scale with Strength, Dex or Faith.

                                              Initial damage IS affected by buffs to Holy damage (Sacred Scorpion Charm and Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear Physick).

                                              Damage over time scales with Faith only.

                                              Damage over time is not affected by buffs to Holy damage.

                                              Neither initial damage or DoT is affected by Red-Feathered Branchsword or buffs to AR.

                                                Insane utility against all high hp bosses, just use it once to take a few thousand hit points off the boss.
