Hold the sword level and prepare to cast a sorcery. Follow up with a normal attack to cast the Night Comet sorcery, or a strong attack to sweep forward with a burst of flames.

Night-and-Flame Stance is a Skill in Elden Ring. Night-and-Flame Stance is a unique skill on the Sword of Night and Flame that allows the user to hold the sword level and then have the option to follow up with a normal attack to cast the Comet Azur sorcery or follow up with a sweep flame attack causing Fire Damage. Updated to Patch 1.07.
How to get Night-and-Flame Stance

Although most use the Astrologer or Prophet for this weapon, I think the Confessor is actually the most optimized starting class for it since they already meet the str/dex requirements by not a point over and they don't severely lack in either faith or intelligence.
Unfortunately, this sword has been nerfed yet again, increasing the fp cost from 19/23 to 26/32

Worth noting, you cannot use either stance even if you meet the requirements for the stance that scales with the stat. i.e. even with 24 faith you cannot use just the flame stance.
imo this should be changed, after the nerfs I think it would be balanced and lore thematical.
The weapon's in-game description does state it uses the "Night Comet" sorcery, but it quite clearly doesn't and the wiki should reflect that.

Would anyone happen to know if the Shard of Alexander talisman (Greatly boosts the attack power of skills) would buff the skills on this sword?

Just have to say I'm blown away by how many people don't use a gamepad with a From Software game on PC, they're totally designed for it. Xbox One controller = plug and play, massive quality of life upgrade over keyboard mouse on any Souls game or Elden Ring on PC.

For those who wonder how to set off a comet attack on KBM-it's very easy. You enter the stance by pressing SHIFT+RMB, then you let go RMB. This kicks you out of stance true, but the character still maintains the stance, almost by inertia, for a second or two, which is more than enough to hit LMB and initiate the comet strike.
Regarding scaling-both attacks scale with weapon's power rating, so buffing any of four stats(STR, DEX, INT, FAI) will buff damage of the attacks.
Likewise, buffs that directly buff attack damage, melee damage and power rating, all increase damage of both default and special attacks. So Golden Vow buff increases damage of both Comet and Fire Wave, so does "Flame Grant Me Strength," but only melee buff affects Comet, while Wave gets buff from both melee and fire buffs. Also, "Determination", "Royal Knight's Determination" ashes of war affect both attacks.
In addition to this, everything that buffs magic damage-buffs comet, and everything that buffs fire damage-buffs the wave attack.
You can't seem to keep chaining comet attack, like you do with comet spells and it has a limited range, and target lock can't aim above or below, manual aiming is required in those cases.

to use on keyboard add a second key to regular attack (like Z or something) alternately hold shift and right click to activate skill then immediately let go of shift and then left click to attack to use the magic attack. for that to work you have to do it immediately after starting it otherwise your character will lower the sword when you release shift

To use the Comet Azur sorcery with this sword you need to hold shift + mouse right button very fast and then mouse left button

Hold left and right click on mouse, then hold **** to use Night attack. -SoupTime454

the problem is that with the default keyboard controls to use a skill you have to hold shift, and while holding shift you can only perform a heavy attack, so with this weapon only the fire attack is usable. changing skill (or heavy attack) key from shift to anything else fixes it.

I’m on PlayStation and I am wondering how the heck do I get the magic effects to happen with vagabond? It’s requiring me to have 24 int / faith, and I’m guessing it works once you reach that level?

The in-game description is actually wrong: it uses the Comet Azur sorcery, not the Night Comet.

So when this talks about casting a sorcery, does that mean the sword’s weapon art allows you to cast sorceries without needing a staff?

Is the Night Comet sorcery affected by Faith, or does it only scale with Intelligence?
Powerful, but not broken or weak anymore.
