Such a strong Ash of War, super fun to use, spammable with cheap FP cost, super wide AOE, staggers a lot of enemies to death when you spam it, one of the best skills for farming the albinaurics and you can also easily complete the whole game with only using this(a bit boring though). I combined it with Founding Rain of Stars and it's a super strong magic damage build and very fun to play! I absolutely love the skill and spell variety in this game!! Hope the DLC brings even a lot more cool things to play with!

Honestly the most reliable way to procc Frost prior to Ranni's Dark Moon. Comes out fast, has decent range, and unlike the Mist options, the hit box isn't so ill-defined that you'll have no clue whether or not you're even hitting anything.

        • Anonymous

Can Hoarfrost Stomp hit multiple times on enemies/bosses with large hitboxes? The animation looks like it makes multiple squares on the ground that should be able to hit multiple times.

the ice spear ashes of war does 20 stance damage... pre-nerf flame of redmane did 40 while this stomp does 0

            • Anonymous

Needs slight damage buff and time recovery buff, as is don't be surprised by eating a jump attack in pvp. (No it won't be busted, frenzied flame and beast claws have better recovery time)

              • Anonymous

One of the coolest abilities in the game, but what's up with the ice completely disappearing doing 0 damage? Seriously is it because of water I'm not seeing or anything? Or a bug?

Best ash to inflict frost status, really good for crowd control and also really useful for spacing or roll catching.
You can also use it as an awakening attack after a riposte/backstab.

Any good for farming birds? Shooting them is good and all, but using shooting materials to farm shooting materials kind of defeats the purpose, especially with 13 Arcane and no Silver Scarab Talisman.

                      HEY BRO, BRO!

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN USE HOARFROST STOMP TO NAVIGATE SAFELY ON INVISIBLE PLATFORMS?

THAT'S RIGHT, ONCE YOU'RE ON TOP OF ONE, JUST CAST THE ASH OF WAR AND IT WILL COVER THE AREA YOU CAN WALK ON, AND IT WILL TRIVIALIZE ALL THE ISSUES YOU MAY HAVE FINDING YOUR WAY IN THE HIDDEN PATH TO HALIGTREE AND THAT *ONE* PUZZLE FROM THAT *ONE* RISE IN THE MOUNTAINTOP OF THE GIANTS.

                      • Pretty good skill.. when it actually works. What feels like half of the time ice animation wont even appear and enemies will just take minor dmg from the initial stomp. Happens annoyingly often on the uneven terrain so it seems like some weird interaction with the ground surfaces. For example i couldnt use it successfully even once in a fight with the named magma wyrm boss (the one guarding the secret back entrance to Altus Plateau, Rya tells you about).

It's damage scales with both intelligence and dexterity. They seem to be equal contributors. Tested many times with stat boosting physick and equipment. Increasing either attribute from 50 to 60 produces the same damage increase.

im playing as frost mage and this thing is still ridiculous after nerf patch. i wonder what's the complains about

I did some testing with this. As this wiki mentions in the Ash of War page, the damage of this is based largely on your weapon's upgrade level and also on your Intelligence. (It is not based on the weapon's damage itself, nor on the affinity.) Flame of the Redmanes is similar but is strength-based instead.

With a level 0 dagger, 12 str, and 12 int, this spell averaged roughly 56 points of damage against the stagecoach trolls in Limgrave, although that's taking into account the frostbite bonus, and once in a while it did 250 damage due to Frostbite procing (20% of HP).

Flame of the Redmanes, by contrast, did 150 damage each time and also staggered the troll on the first hit, and on every second hit when it was free. Hoarfrost literally never staggers anyone.

The advantage of Hoarfrost is that you do not have to target anyone to use it since it just travels along the ground automatically, it covers a very wide area, and it makes everyone flink twice (once immediately, once a second later when the main damage is applied) so it works very well defensively, as well as being excellent at applying Frostbite. I think if you're primarily a sorcerer, this is a good ash to interrupt the attacks of everyone in front of you as well as procing Frostbite, but if you primarily use weapons, Redmanes' stagger and direct damage may be more valuable.

Cant find this freaking scarab for this skill. Anyone else had such problem? I double checked if I did got him earlier but thats not the case. Are there some restriction for getting him at all?

I'm on the Xbox one s and currently my hoarfrost stomp skill is bugged the animation doesn't always appear, most of the time I've only seen it when facing uphill but not guaranteed, it always uses MP to use but apart from the initial stomp damage nothing else happens, all I'm doing is stomping for a bit of damage, supper inconsistent frost animation and damage.

                                        • Anonymous

Got question about pure physical STR builds, melee only. Think of using golden vow + hoarfrost stomp. And hoarfrost stomp i want to use only to apply Frostbite, to boost my autoattacks by 20%. From what i understand, Hoarfrost stomp basically guarantees frostbite effect on bosses?

                                          • Anonymous

Still an excellent ash of war. Just because it doesn’t do gigatons of damage anymore doesn’t mean it’s useless. The fact that it can still apply frostbite in such a wide area of effect for very minimal FP continues to make it top tier.

                                            • Anonymous

This thing is still ridiculous even after nerf. Like its range, power and wind-up animation are still so far ahead most other ashes of war, I don't see myself not using it over the vast majority of AoW against mobs.

Did they move the location with the patch? The place it says to find it gave me Storm Stomp ash of war instead?

I guess the nerf was deserved
You could stunlock and kill most enemies by spamming that thing lol

I'll miss the old Hoarfrost Stomp

Man, I got to Niall too late. Apparently they've nerfed this now and it was the best tip I had for the fight. Those summons have just massacred me like 20 times now and it's getting ridiculous.

                                                    • Anonymous

I think this nerf was actually good. So obviously this nerf from 1.0.3 was directed toward speedrunners. Hoarfrost still has an amazing AoE and decent damage for a WA. sure it can't be spammed like before, in my head the WA has moved from a do everything whenever WA to don't use this on bosses

This nerf will actually make the game more enjoyable for me, i want to rp as a frost battlemage, so now i can't solely rely on hoarfrost stomp like i've tended to do in the past. It's still a useful and cool ash of war. Frost>Fire Gang

Absolutely fair - Melee build shouldnt have access to a ranged AOE attack that performs arguably better than something available to a magic build with 40 int.

RIP. You helped me put down Malenia and the Elden Beast and I will never forget you for that great service. I'm sure it still works, but probably not like the machine gun of death it was before!

Half dmg and one third longer cast time - they nerfed through the ground so that nobody will use it again. Finally, my Mimic Frost Stompy Steamroll build got destroyed. Glad I have collected all the achievements already. Now the Age of Occult Bleed has truly begun.

                                                                • I was just thinking yesterday on how extremely OP this skill was. The game suddenly wasn't as hard anymore after using it. I mean, almost every boss I encountered suddenly became a piece of cake. It kinda felt...too easy. But I guess be careful what you wish for, because now it's certainly nerfed to the ground. And not only that, they've also managed to mess up the animation for when you change the direction of the skill mid-channeling. Many times the frost part isn't there at all, at least not visually. You're just left with a hard stomp to the ground. Much like what From did to this skill.

R.I.P Hoarfrost, we had a good run...

                                                                        • Anonymous

Still great for killing trash mobs but no longer the "win the game" button. May I redirect people to Flame of the Redmanes which is similar in usage and damage with the bonus of poise break ;)

The weapon skill scales with 3 things: Weapon upgrade level, Weapon AR, and all magic damage bonuses (In order of impact).
Because intelligence applies a flat buff to magic damage, it will slightly increase the damage of hoarfrost stomp. Raw AR increases have a much more significant impact on the skill's damage. So, when choosing your affinity, always choose the one with the highest TOTAL AR. The game does not care about split damage when calculating the weapon skill damage. The biggest AR value will give the biggest skill damage value.
