30 Stance damage would have been perfectly fine, putting it on par with other Ashes of War like Unsheathe or Lion's Claw. 10 is just too low, it's stupid.
- Anonymous
Any ash of war that does a certain amount of stance break, like 30 for example, should be on par with other weapon arts. FOTR was designed to do big stance break, it should have stayed that way. It should have just been made to compete with other weapon arts designed for stance breaking.
Lion's Claw: 30. Unsheathe: 30. Square Off: Freaking 40. 30 is the ballpark that FOTR should have been in, not 10.
- Anonymous
It was way too effective thats why I personally did not used it (was very boring)
But its fair to say this nerf went way too far if its only can break a stance of a snow troll by casting it 8 times in a row
- Anonymous
Damage and speed increases would be nice for pve and pvp.
It's bad to mediocre without stagger locking. Some compensation buffs wouldn't break the game.
- Anonymous
Huge, wide cone of damage, hits at mid-range, moves slowly so you can follow up with a melee attack, melts enemies and bosses weak to fire (like Erdtree Avatars and Cleanrot Knights,) and gets pretty excellent damage when investing in strength. Before it was abused; now it's used. There's still plenty of things to abuse in Elden Ring if you're knowledgeable enough, of course. It's just that this one has been put more in line with what the devs intended it to do. (I'm still kinda bummed though.) Try a dex or int-focused Ice Spear build for a spiritual successor.

It baffles my mind how people can be so whiny about PvP that they would get useful things for single player wiped out. PvP is a small aspect of this game...stop ruining things for people playing the other 99% of the game

I totally agree that this had way too much poise damage pre-nerf, but now it's more or less useless. The damage isn't that great, so all it really does well now is deal with dogs and finger creepers, which aren't that much of an issue anyway. Such a shame, this was a really cool skill. Overtuned, but undeniably cool.
- Anonymous
This is still an awesome AOW; aesthetically fantastic, decent damage, okay against crowds. Look, yeah, before the nerf the poise damage was amazing, and probably way overtuned. Was the nerf too much? Probably, but eh, still a fun ability for any fire-themed builds.
- Anonymous
There are nuclear test sites less toxic than this discussions page, jesus. This ash wasn't even that good in PVP, why does anybody care how good it was in singleplayer. Just don't use it if you don't like it.
This still does a lot of damage. It just won't completely trivialize the entire game to the point where you might as well go play Tetris anymore.

Poise damage still at10? Why? 0 is fine. Btw damage can also be 0, nobody gonna use it anyway.

regarding strength scaling
Using uchigatana with a str/dex build-> if I am leveling up dex, will flame of redmane's still increase because the uchi scales w/dex? or will it only increase w/str?
- Anonymous
guarantee you these are the same people who say int makes the game too easy
Was quite effective against flying enemies before 1.08, now I would say don't bother unless you can one-shot. It doesn't poise break so it doesn't knock them down. Usually one is all you can get out before bird talons are within kissing distance
- Anonymous
I never used it before the nerf, but the damage is still great. One of my favorites!
- Anonymous
Don't worry guys! In the same patch they buffed the poise damage of Moonveil. What a joke
- Anonymous
Reduced? Poise damage has been eliminated. Looking for another suggestion for light weight poise damage skill. Spectral Lance?

Something is good->nerf it by 75%->Something is bad and unused->Stop updating the game
good job fromsoftware

Another thing lobotomized because Miyazaki doesn't like seeing people easily beat his games, so rather than give it a slight nerf, he flat out kills it. RIP to Flame of redmanes, the ds3 sunslight swagsword knows your pain.

I'm on my 5th playthrough and looks like it's time to finally learn Maliketh's moveset
- Anonymous
My absolute favorite aow and now it's unusable garbage. Way over nerfed.
- Anonymous
I'm on my first playthrough and chose to play Katana and Misericorde. Suddenly I can't stagger and crit bosses anymore. That sucks.
- Anonymous
it carried me from maliketh to elden beast, i saw it flourish, i saw it die

Miyazaki: NOOOO ITS MAKING THE GAME TOO EASY PEOPLE MIGHT SEE I AM NOT A GOD!! NERFFFF

Love how the comments went from “this is such a cheese aow” to “you’d be better off with lions claw”

I feel like they should have nerfed it only to 25 Stance damage. With the Stonebarb Cracked Tear the Stance damage would be 32.5 (can someone confirm if the tear affects FOTR).
Most bosses have around 80-120 Stance health, so with 25 stance damage FOTR could have poise broke most bosses with 5 uses without tear tear, 4 uses with the tear.
I get that 40 Stance damage might have seem a bit high for an ash of war that could come out really quickly, but 10 Stance damage, it's just too low man.
- Anonymous
Flame of the Redmanes' poise damage was nerfed way too hard. It should have just been lowered to 30, not lowered BY 30. Please From Software, give Flame of the Redmanes 20 stagger points back.

Did they really have to nerf it that hard? I'd get if they halved of from 40 to 20 poise damage but to 10? Way to nerf it into the ground, not that they needed to nerf it in the first place. Couldn't they have just nerfed its effectiveness in PvP and not ruin it in the PvE?
- Anonymous
Malenia was first try with this AoW in my first playthrough. They nerfed it, but I still first try Malenia on my NG+ with Lion's Claw + Ultra Big Hammer. So everything is gucci my friends.
- Anonymous
So, how is this for damage on a proper strength build?
I like the animation and theme, but always ended up avoiding it due to how funky all that posture breaking was

Flame of the Redmans is giga nerfed in 1.08, went from dealing 40 poise damage to 12
- Anonymous
I will admit that this was way too strong, but the nerf might have gone too far.
Going from 40 to 10 stance damage will quadruple the hits to stagger, meaning this is likely inferior to Flaming Strike from a damage perspective. It will barely stagger anymore, so most of its damage will come from the WA itself, which Flaming Strike does better via buffing.
For those looking for alternatives to this for a stagger build, the Glintblade Phalanx AoW still does 40 stagger damage, if slower and less spammable, and Square Off deals 40 stagger on its Heavy input. There are still options, just not as simple as rushing Caelid for the AoW.

How much stance damage DID it do before it got nerfed in 1.08?
- Anonymous
Wow, From really nerfed this. They massacred my boy in 1.08!

They nerfed this thing today. Guess people are going to have to actually play the game now and not cheese every boss lmao.

Me and my boy +10 mimic tear destroyed maleketh, and 1st tried gideon, godfey and radagon/ elden beast with a +25 fire uchigatana with fotrm.

(note: this NEVER scales with faith, only strength).
This ash of war is OP for critical hit builds. It has the highest stance damage per second of any ability. Not only is it fast, it's cheap. At only 14 FP, it's the only FP-costing move that costs less to stance break most enemies than you get from critting with the assassin's cerulean dagger talisman (restores 15 per damagign part of crit animation, so you can do it indefinitely. Everything else costs >15. Glintblade phalanx is 18 (combos well with this tho). Everything else is way slower and more costly.
Its a shame, because this overshadows a lot of potential crit builds with little effort. Stone of gurranq, aspect of the crucible: tail, heavy finisher, and trolls roar are decent alternatives if you don't want to use this meta junk or spam jumping heavies, but it won't be a very clean build.

Does the poise damage scale with weapon upgrade? I used this now on Istvan (a humanoid NPC) with a +0 caestus, I hit him four times in quick succession and no stagger.
- Anonymous
I really hope this doesn't get nerfed because it's super fun, really usefull for RL1 runs.

Definitely needs a nerf for PvE. unlike other overtuned strats like comet azur/ metorite of astel + infinite fp (which can only be done once before resting) or lion's claw/ giant hunt on gugs or other colossals (which require a dedicated strength build), or bleed builds (also requiring a dedicated build), this thing is universally useful, can be applied to any build, can inflict bloodloss via bloodflame blade, and combined with misrecorde, makes it so that you basically don't even have to engage with any of the core mechanics of the game (i-frame dodges, positioning, guard counters, etc.), since you can just stun lock bosses to death.
Increase the damage scaling with the weapon's AR (25% or so), make the stagger damage be like half or a fourth of what it is currently. It retains use as a decent stagger and crowd control option for mobs on builds that aren't speced into the spell caster stats, or don't use heavy weapons, and gives them elemental damage in addition.
The stance damage on this doesn't make any sense, a small cloud of flame shouldn't be doing more stance damage than artorias-flipping with a hunk of steel the size of a bike.
- Anonymous
Hoo boy is this thing massively overtuned. Breaks Elden Beast's poise in four hits, and less against most other bosses in the game. Allows for 3-5 ripostes you would never have gotten otherwise. On top of that, it does decent straight up damage, comes out fast and costs little FP. There are basically no drawbacks to this.
- Anonymous
This is ass in PVP, which is the only place nerfs should be put in place. Taking away people's ability to smash bosses with intended game mechanics is petty.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I don’t understand why some people say this needs a nerf. It isn’t even good in pvp.
- Anonymous
no requirements, any weapon, obtainable immediately. found this on a second playthrough and just stunned at the strength of this thing. pair with misercorde for the closest thing to an easy mode
- Anonymous
"It seems to scale only with the weapon AR."
I dont think so: for me it seems to scale with the strength scaling of the weapon, at least strongly modified by it, because (60 str / 60 fth build) I got more dmg out of it with a heavy affinity, than with a flame affinity. Tried several weapons.

I'm not ashamed at all to use this against fights like the Crucible duo,

I killed the omen king first try with a miséricorde +14 and this ash of war, use margit shackle, then 2 woosh woosh, critical hit, 2 woosh woosh, critical hit, drink when you need, I just got damaged when he phased transition, otherwise yes I didn't see much of the moveset. So op. It would be nice to have something in between having a sh*t weapon that tickle bosses (at level 1) and this lol. When it's your first rl1 you might want to try several weapons but the most important bell bearings are AFTER this boss....

Way overdue for a nerf. FotR makes beating some of the toughest enemies and bosses in the game child's play, and definitely makes me feel like the rightful Elden Lord.
- Anonymous
I threw this on my misericorde and buckler build. anything i'm having a hard time parrying, gets the flamey stagger and then a doink.
- Anonymous
Does anyone know if using Flame Grant Me Strength incantation with this Ashes would further improve the Fire damage?
- Anonymous
Even if they resist the fire damage you deal with this, if they are a staggerable enemy, it will still break their stance. Tried it on Man serpents that are immune to fire damage and it still broke their stance.
- Anonymous
Amazing vs all those enemies that have absurd poise, like the Crucible Knights.
- Anonymous
Just so you know, Square Off's heavy version also deals 40 stance damage. What makes this skill infinitely better in my opinion is its range and spammability. A banished knight in Stormveil will be stance broken in two hits from this or square off, but you'll have such an easier time with two of these than two square offs.
- Anonymous
This is the most powerful weapon skill in the game in my opinion, and even as a sorcerer I find many enemies, and even many bosses, easiest to fight using this skill instead of sorcery.
But anyway, for those wondering how strength affects it, I did some testing with two characters that both have a +16 misericorde. With a strength of 12, the skill typically did 505 damage. With a strength of 53, it typically did 650 damage. So while strength increases damage a bit, you do NOT need high strength to utilize this ability even if you just want it for AoE fire damage. Also strength had no apparent effect on poise damage, which of course is the raison d'etre of this skill.
- Anonymous
As good as this skill is it has to be said it will NOT beat every boss in the game. Additionally to boss resistances it is totally useless against bosses on a horse bc they are way too fast and just jump over it and don't get hit by it at all. So Night Cavalry, Tree Sentinels, Loretta etc. are unbeatable without having a plan B using some other stuff. Just saying.
Volcano pots are stupid good for killing the invisible scarabs since they only have 1 hp and the pots leave a lingering cloud of damage.
- Anonymous
This thing is just bananas. It may be the most powerful Ash in the game. It's ability to stagger is so good its broken. Most bosses are staggered in 2-4 casts, you can cast it pretty quickly and it doesn't even use much FP. Not to mention the flames themselves do decent damage on their own. Combining this with the Dagger Talisman can absolutely SHRED bosses, if they aren't too quick and agile. It is slow enough that really fast bosses are tough to hit with it. But besides that, this thing is OP. I'm actually going to stop using it unless I'm really stuck on a boss because it's just that powerful.
- Anonymous
Either this got changed, deals different stance damage based on weapon, or Bernhal is busted. I hit him with this like ten times, in groups of 3-4 in quick succession, and he didn't stance break once.
- Anonymous
The scarab for this Ash must be bugged. No feetsteps are sowing in my area. I tried glintblade, even after reloading the area a few times. Even used the Magma Wyrm Scalesword to coat the area in lava. No dice.
- Anonymous
Do people have no will power? If you think its op, just dont use it...
- Anonymous
This skill is broken yo
1 hit and it stagges almost all enemies
2-3 Hits and it staggers most big enemies and bosses
Completely destroys any boss fight with the amount of damage it does
- Anonymous
With Carian Filigreed Crest and the talismans that give HP/FP on crit, sticking this on the Misericord will carry you through most of the game while still letting you learn boss mechanics.
- Anonymous
The insane amount of stagger this deals makes it shatter Crystalians in 2-3 hits. Absolutely insane!
- Anonymous
Poise damage is independent from stance/posture damage, and the corresponding enemy health for each (poise health, stance health) are also independent. Malenia has low enough poise to get stunned by a curved sword (so long as she doesn't have hyperarmor), but she has the stance/posture of a large enemy so two hits from this skill would put her in a brake/riposte state, while it would take many more hits from a curved sword to do the same.
