Black blade spinning slash that emits wave of light.
![]() |
Black Blade is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Black Blade spell throws a drill attack emitting a wave of light. Updated to Patch 1.07.
Power gleaned from the remembrance of Maliketh.
Caster creates an illusory black blade, then leaps forward to deliver a spinning slash that emits a wave of light. This can be followed up with one additional attack.
This blade was once imbued with Destined Death. In addition to dealing damage, it reduces foes' maximum HP and continues to sap their current HP for a very short time.
Where to find Black Blade
Where to find Black Blade:
- Trade Remembrance of the Black Blade with Enia at Roundtable Hold.
Elden Ring Black Blade Guide
- Erdtree Incantation
- Stamina Cost: 44
- Note: In Patch 1.07, the stamina cost has been reduced to 44 from 51. Improved turning performance and shortened recovery time. The sword and the wave attack have been changed so that they hit at the same time. Attack power, stamina attack power and poise damage of each part have been decreased. Decreased the number of times the wave part hits large enemies.
(This incantation is currently missing its follow up attack when cast from the left hand. This issue will be corrected in a future update.) - Reduces enemy max HP by 10% for 15 seconds.
- Saps enemy HP for 2 seconds
- Deals 10 stance damage
- The damage type is 100% Holy Damage. The sapping damage can be increased by Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Sacred Scorpion Charm, as well as other generic attack buffs like Golden Vow, etc.
- Debuff stacks with either the Destined Death OR Blade of Death but NOT both.
- Black Blade performs a spinning slash that emits a vertical wave that passes through enemies. The follow-up spin and its wave is angled diagonally.
- See Buffs and Debuffs for more information on stacking debuffs.

After testing on Greyoll with an un upgraded seal I found the hp % drain to be between 3 to 4% on a single hit. Another note is that the blade and projectile have separate hit boxes which mean it can hit twice in a single cast.
- Anonymous
Does the blade also do damage? I noticed I deal around 300 damage if I hit with only the projectile but when someone gets within melee distance it deals like 600. I assumed it was because the blade also hit.
- Anonymous
Does the hp sap on this deal a percentage of damage like black flame does or is it like a static number? (just to clarify I don't mean the 10% max hp reduction but the "saps enemy hp for 2 seconds")
- Anonymous
You spam spells and run away the moment someone gets close. I free aim chain cast combo this while doing 360s to absolutely dunk on people. We are not the same.
- Anonymous
Honestly it should have a cooler moveset, like the way maliketh does it in the fight
- Anonymous
I have an issue with this incantation. Yes, is really cool and the destined death effect is very good. But it seems that due to the max health reduction the first blast (ranged) does 0 damage and all comes from the latter damage ticks and the followup attack. I hope that this is a bug and the end up fixing it because it is a shame
- Anonymous
Someone please explain the math to me. Both this and Blade of Death are supposed to drain 10% of max HP from bosses. You can stack both effects at once, presumably for 20% health lost. The bosses don't regain the health they lost when the effect wears off, yet hitting them with it ten times doesn't kill them, or even come close. This is against Placidusax btw, what's happening?
- Anonymous
Like all black flame incantations, it's great against bosses with huge health bars.
- Anonymous
You can actually get some really high damage if you hit the enemy with the illusory sword. Even though it seems more like a projectile incantation, it does twice as much damage when you use it like a melee attack.
- Anonymous
Is the hp draining part of this spell have it's damage increased over time with the Old Lord talisman?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Interestingly enough, it doesn't seem to produce an Incantation sigil. Not sure if any other incantations are like this. It goes immediately into the blade used to attack with, no sigils appearing either in-hand, along the blade, or on impact.
- Anonymous
does this incantation count as a jump attack? i would think so because of the attack animation
- Anonymous
Pretty much strictly a PvE spell. No way in hell you're landing this on anybody.

Just now realizing that this is an updated gravelord sword dance from ds1. Also nito is the lord of death. Maliketh holds the rune of death. These games are so good at improving their ideas and making them feel new. It's not just a re-used spell from an old game. Its completly re-imagined.

You can currently do the follow-up attack from the left hand.

LORD FAITH GET COOLER AND STRONGER SWORD LIKE ATTACKS. Plus they can hold lightning bolts in their hands. makes Intelligence look like trash

I also really liked this spell because of its range and strength (and I would have made the wave stronger then against small enemies, and not weakened it, as they did now). The only weakening of the wave was needed for big enemies and that's it. But it would be cooler if we did this spell with charging. The wave flew out only after charging and with good damage, and without charging, a melee strike and with faster cast animation and also with good damage. Now, as a melee spell, the black blade has been cast for too long. Now the spell can be used twice and the second animation is a little faster. I would have the charged blade use the first animation and start a wave, and the melee use the second animation, the one that is faster

I wish they had just added a hitbox to the blade without lowering the projectioe damage. The damage is great when both the blade and wave hit but as someone who used it more as a ranged attack, like a longer ranged Black Knife, the changes feel dissapointing. You already have great Incantations for closer range where the damage on this is optimal, but what about long range? You have Frenzied Burst and free aimed Stones of Gurranq. Feels like a nice ranged tool in the kit was severely diminished to make yet another close range incant but with a ranged flourish added on. Totally don't have multiple lightning attacks that do that already.

Can't decide which remembrances to duplicate. Do you need this one if you can wield the actual Black Blade sword?
Is there a popular consensus for Faith/Dex ?

It has a left hand glitch so you can't use the full combo, and it doesn't even hit as hard as the black knife weapon art at 60fth and 282 incant scaling

This spell is bugged. For some reason putting in an additional input no longer allows the second animation and simply restarts the original spell animation
- Anonymous
This Incantation is currently glitched if you decide to use it with your left hand seal.
It makes you unable to do the follow up attack and has you reset to the first attack.

Literally have other spells that manifest swords that have a melee hitbox but this doesn’t. Silly and non-intuitive.
- Anonymous
I have found that while it doesn’t stack with blade of death and dagger of death. It will stack with black blade summon.

After using it for a bit I like this incantation a lot more than I thought I was going to after reading some of the comments here. The range might not match frenzied burst but it comes out a lot quicker and just like frenzied burst it will pass through at least one enemy to hit one target-locked behind it. I have 80 FTH and this hits hard for me, even without the two fingers heirloom or sacred scorpion. It also looks pretty spectacular every time it's cast. There is a lot to like here and I'm happy I duplicated Maliketh's remembrance to get this and the sword.
The only let down was using it on the Omen in the shunning grounds, I don't know what their holy damage negation is, but seeing it wreck T-Rex dogs then doing negligible damage to late game Omen makes it perfectly clear holy damage on it's own for a pure faith build isn't as viable as a faith/pyromancer build.
- Anonymous
I don't know which I want to cash in from the remembrance. This needing two slots makes me wary of how much use I'll get out of it and a comment saying the actual blade does no damage only the projectile is another thing against it. So should I just take the sword? but I took the sacred blade from the Elden Beast remembrance so I'm not sure I need another holy damage sword. Opinions on this are most welcome.
- Anonymous
This is a really cool looking incantation, but isn't it castrated by doing holy damage? Maybe not for the Albinaurics down hill from the palace approach ledge road in the video here but don't a lot of end game enemies and bosses have high holy damage negation? or am I missing something?
- Anonymous
Its raw damage is not anything crazy, but the fact that it temporarily lowers enemies' max health aswell as causing dot makes it excellent against tanky enemies and especially bosses, it's range isn't anything to scoff at not to mention it's just absolutely awesome looking.

Why fromsoft... why doesn't the blade have an actual hitbox.
Adulas moonblade is faster, can be chaincasted and has both blade and projectile hitbox.
It just doesn't make any sense that this spell cant hit with the blade.

"The damage type is Holy Damage and scales with Faith. The sapping damage can be increased by Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Sacred Scorpion Charm, as well as other generic attack buffs like Golden Vow, Flame Grant Me Strength, etc."
doesnt flame grant me strength only increase physical and flame damage? so this wouldnt be affected since this deals entirely holy damage, right? i dont know how to edit the wiki so someone else do it pls.

Pretty fun in PVE, and is useful as a first move or a finisher against a bunch of bosses.

For all faith incantation users here’s a little tip for using this weapon. Against bosses with large health pools immediately use this weapon for the first projectile to cause the boss to lose about 10% of their health pool with the tick damage. This is very good because you maximize the damage the sword deals by immediately using it! Unless you are fighting a boss like Malenia who can heal back to full, this will put a big dent into a boss’s health bar with the simple press of a button. Outside of this utility, it’s an alright/ pretty good incantation for PvE despite the 2 slots taken away. 8/10 if you ask me.

Absolutely baffled as to how the current state of this, Maliketh's Black Blade, and the Black Knife made it to the final release. God-slaying weapons, imbued with the power of death, all totally worthless against the final bosses all of whom are gods and demigods. It would be so easy to just add another damage type (death? dark? occult???) that only these sources deal. Hell, join it with occult weapons, which as an "elemental" upgrade feel seriously undercooked.

So I've been playing around with the black blade incantation, and I've noticed something. When I hit the troll outside the secluded cell site of grace, it takes the first hit and the sapping damage. On the second input, it takes the hit damage, the sapping damage, but also takes a third chunk of damage. Idk what NG+ I'm in (enough to platinum the game), and this seems to happen to SOME of the enemies with higher HP. Has anyone seen this? If so, how did you get it to proc more consistently?

I would like delete this thing and make it to the Malikeths Black Balde skill instead of what we have right now. With the same stats as the original weapon skill. Just imagine, it could be one of the broken weapons after Rivers Of Blood.

cast animation is bugged after honed bolt or lightning strike combo
- Anonymous
Its amazing against mage cause you can hyperarmor their spell, the wave does a hefty 70 poise, wich the stun true combo into a chain casted honed bolt, and than a roll catch honed bolt. If someone roll into you to dodge it, you can cast catch flame instantly to hit the end if their roll. Really nice spell for pvp
- Anonymous
Try sprinting Catch Flame or Bestial Sling into Black Blade combo. Makes you hit with an invisible Black Blade in front of yourself.

Try this combo. Bestial Sling into Honed bolt into Black Blade. Snaps your character's spine

It melts the fire giant. Try to make the attack go through the giant

I really wish it dealt more damage or cost a little bit less FP maybe like 20 because as it stands outside of an opening act on a meaty enemies ie mostly bosses it's quite inefficient to incorporate it as an incantation I would use frequently even as burst damage it can't quality so I'm hoping for a buff honestly.
- Anonymous
Best opening attack to use on tanky bosses in the game. Super fun to help people with Radagon/Elden Beast and immediately chunk their health the moment each fight starts.
- Anonymous
One of my favorite incantations. While it may not be the most efficient, the original hit plus the follow up does solid damage to bosses, as well as the DOT effect and the health bar reduction. Bosses like placidusax that are resistant to both fire and lightning get shredded by this spell. Looks badass too.
- Anonymous
From personal experience with the incantation;
PVE: Great for bosses. Will apply a 20% reduction to the bosses max health allowing you to drop a boss 20% in your first hit. The draining effect from hitting the incantation is nice but for the FP cost is not worth in my opinion as I would rather use blackflame fireball for its HP drain effect at a much more efficient FP cost. I use this as a way to quickly remove 20% of a bosses health and then continue the fight as normal.
PVP: Pretty poor. It has a long wind-up which is really obvious making the actual projectile pretty easy to dodge. The damage for the wind-up is not particularly impressive either. Fortunately it does have the benefit of having high hyper armour meaning its really hard to break you out the spell. If you are invading it might be useful if it hits someone as a surprise but in a duel you will find very few opportunities to actually hit someone with the projectile.
- Anonymous
Unfortunately, obsolete and useless even after the 1.04 patch. Doesn't do enough for the FP cost and windup when lightning spear/giant's flame take thee exist. Also the actual black blade AoW and black knife AoW are strictly better.

Seems like the Fire Giant is immune to the max HP reduction

The hilarious thing about this Incant is that if you cast two spells as part of a combo, using this as your third cast will yield some...interesting results...

This can hit the Troll by Secluded Cell from just outside the Grace door.
- Anonymous
I'm noticing damage buffs from both flame shrouded and holy shrouded cracked tears; separately and together. I've also noticed this with other black flame incantations. Holy flames cook many bosses.
- Anonymous
It would be nice if you could spin a bit more while casting, something similar to stone or qurranq.
To whoever put the gif of what the spell actually does, thank you, that's an awesome addition that i think should happen to more pages on here.
- Anonymous
So this doesn't stack and phantom hit applies the max hp debuff
So for pvp this is really easy to just debuff someone without even hitting and swap to something else
- Anonymous
Is the blade supposed to hit or deal damage?
I feel the only damage stems from the projectile.
- Anonymous
Slow and short range. More show than impact. Stay away . If you are faith build use swarm of flied wherever you are considering to use this
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Great projectile speed and tracking. Hits hard, casting has decent hyper armor. Late game you should have enough fp to not worry about efficiency as much. Great incantation for the toolbox.
- Anonymous
absolutely obliterated dragonlord placidusax on my third try with this, and i thought rotten breath was cheddar
- Anonymous
It’s a good spell, its just that faith users have access to two phenomenal weapons: Blasphemous Blade and Envoys Long Horn. These weapons skills (Takers Flames & Bubble Shower) absolutely destroy everything and are much more worthy of your FP usage.
Another thing is by the time you get this spell, the only bosses left in the game are holy resistant, which makes it seem less useful.
- Anonymous
I shouldn't need to look up a wikipedia article to know this does holy damage. They really did need to update the game to not need so much third party involvement to be able to make decisions in game.
- Anonymous
We need a page dedicated to the destined death flame effect. I've seen some really strange behaviors from this such as low health enemies dying after the HP reduction wears off or enemies being incapable of dying until it wears off.
- Anonymous
So fun fact. Based on the data shown, the 10% max health debuff does stack! But Few rules apply.
1, You can only stack Black Blade incantation's 10% max health debuff with either Maliketh's Black Blade or Black Knife's 10% max health debuff
2, You cannot stack Maliketh's Black Blade's 10% max health debuff with Black Knife's.
3, Under any circumstance the buff will not stack with itself, must be Black Blade incantation and one of your choices from above mentioned.
4, Boss which is already under 80% health, the debuff stacking will do pretty much nothing.
- Anonymous
I guess I dont understand the reduce max hp ability all that much - like I assume a mob/boss doesnt receive that hp back similar to us vs maliketh?
- Anonymous
Cast this on Great Stars with Prelate's Charge ash, then Flame, Grant Me Strength and then Golden Vow. Lord of Blood's Exultation + Rotten Winged Sword Insignia + Millicent's Prosthesis.

i dont belive its damage is holy since enemies with High holy resistance like Radagon and Elden beast recieve pretty good damage from it.
I think that is a "rune of death" special type of damage.
To add to this, Malekiths Black Blade (wich does holy damage) does less damage than the blasphemous blade (wich does fire) but Destined Death does between 2.3k and 3.2k of damage to the elden beast, while Taker's Flames did less (belive that around 1.7k)

Might just be large enemies but each wave can hit up to two times doing pretty good damage, this thing can also hit and go through multiple enemies that are lined up, and lastly a nice alternative to Frenzied burst for long range attacks, a lot of diversity but most importantly it looks cool
- Anonymous
One of the issues I have with souls games is that a lot of good weapons/spells come way too late in the game. I guess it pretty much makes NG+ a requirement.

i've got very epic moment while using this spell on pvp, so basicly i met with a frost mage, i think he's very dedicated frosmage since he wear ranni's hat, and use icerag instead of pebble, not to mention his constang spam of ranni's dark moon right after casting that ice tornado, very crafty, i in the other hand was doing my elden bling build with 80 faith, i basicly went to this red mage look with red colour incantations and some buff, unfortunate for him cuz i've always brought barrier of gold with me, despite that he manage to chip my 60% of my hp, and then the epic moment come, his hp is low so was mine, then i use this spell to finish him off at the samd time he use adula's moonblade and both of our spell hit, he died from the damage while i died from frostbite lol.

I've noticed that the black flame effect that stays after this or the actual sword burns for much shorter than the black knife's black flame projectile.
Black Knife's flame definitely lingers longer on the target than this does. Though It also looks like the burn ticks faster on the spell than on the knife's projectile.
can't really confirm if it ticks faster or not for sure though because things just keep dying too quick.
Though I can say without a doubt, black knife's black flame lasts longer than both the black sword and the black blade incantation.
this might also be my eyes playing tricks on me but the flame effect left behind seems a lot more red and black where as the flame effect the black knife leaves on the victim is much more faded in colors.
This is one of those spells that seems worse than it is until you realize you can use the distance. It deals reasonably heavy damage and does the Maliketh burn effect. It is a bit of a slow cast but worth it with the range
- Anonymous
Don't sleep on this
A double hit takes ~3000 of placidusax and made the fight a cakewalk
- Anonymous
One thing people miss about this incantation is that it has incredible range. Most clips of people demonstrating it use it like a melee spell. But the range is greater than spells like black flame/lightning spear.

Does the damage significantly increase with the clawmark? Or is it not much of a difference using a different seal.

There is a glitch if you chain this after Honed Bolt. Use Honed Bolt 2x then switch to black blade and your character then spins their torso while their legs stay still. It is very easy to pull off
The hp debuff seems to be stackable meaning if you hit the enemy with the blade and projectile you’ll get two instances of destined death simultaneously. Occasionally, the projectile hits twice on larger targets resulting in three destined death dots. Malikeths black blade seems to work the same. Probably one of the best options on elden beast
