Sweeps area before caster with black flame
![]() |
Scouring Black Flame is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Scouring Black Flame spell creates fire in a wide area in front of the user. Can be charged for increased range. Updated to Patch 1.07.
A black flame incantation of the Godskin Apostles.
Sweeps a wide area before the caster with black flame.
Charging enhances range.
The black flame could once slay gods. But when Maliketh sealed Destined Death, the true power of the black flame was lost.

Elden Ring Scouring Black Flame Guide
- Godskin Apostle Incantation
- Stamina Cost: 36
- Deal (Seal Scaling x1,98) fire damage before resistances, with an additional 2,5% of the enemy's max health, charging incrases damage by +22%
- Travels outward and upward in an arc from the player, making it tough to deal with smaller enemies on the ground like Rats or Dogs
- This can be somewhat mitigated by free-aiming the camera downward before casting
- Compared to Black Flame, this spell is stronger in damage, however charging both spells makes them equal
- Notes: As of Patch 1.07, increased stamina attack power against guarding enemies and increased poise damage when charged.

i used this at 52 faith with a +9 erdtree seal against radahn using fire scorpion, godfrey icon, flame shrouding tear, and canvas talisman. i think it hit him multiple times cause it did a quarter of his health instantly

it nukes in pvp if you dont get screwed over by the weird trajectory
- Anonymous
I just hate how this things hitbox travels upwards and i always find theres weird vertical dead angles when trying to free aim this. Same thing happens with glintstone arc when you try to point it up or down theres certain angles you just cant seem to get.

Compared to Black Flame:
- Costs 3 (17%) more FP
- deals only 4% more damage (deals equal damage when both are charged)
+ 1.5s cast and recovery, vs 2.2s
+ can hit multiple enemies
+ deals twice as much poise damage in PvE (25 vs 12).
If I has to choose between the two, I would pick this.

This can be reflected by erdtree great shield. It actually looks epic because it will flow around the shield.

This need a buff so badly. It barely deals more damage than the normal black flame (which is faster and has longer reach). Also, it doesnt have any stun potential while Flame of the Redmanes can stun any enemy with just a few uses. There is no reason to use this over the other 2 as it stands.

Enemy AI will not attempt to dodge this incantation, unlike as in the case of Black Flame

The description for this incantation "sweeps a wide area before the caster with black flame" is misleading, it gives the impression that it travels at speed from the caster in a wide arc damaging anything in its path. Instead it moves a little forward then up over the heads of any enemy, target-locked or not.
The only time I ever saw this do any damage was when I was standing right behind an enemy, close enough to back stab doing a lot more damage than this does.

This incantation seems broken, in the not working properly sense of the word. You read the description and you think it's going to be shooting down a corridor damaging anything it touches, but the reality is far from that.
It's laughable, black flame can be charged and it will hit a target locked enemy, on top of that it uses less FP to cast

is the damage over time after-effect the same as on Black Flame?
- Anonymous
Absolutely amazing spell, can even hit big enemies multiple times. Similar damage to Black Flame, except enemies have way harder time dodging it, and it only costs 3FP more.

Excellent spell. It was also part of the funniest thing I’ve seen thus far in Elden Ring. Fighting the Erdtree Avatar in Mountaintops of the Giants, it hits 60% and goes to do its split move. I throw out a charged Scouring Black Flame with tons of fire buffs and charged spell buffs on. The new double hitbox takes the Avatar from 60% to 0 within a second. Genuinely did not understand why it dealt so much damage ‘til next playthrough and I actually got to see it split apart without instakilling it.

This spell seems to aim higher when fully charged, which can make you miss some shorter enemies, still chunks radagon tho :)

maybe it's cuz i don't have 40 dex but this casting speed being slower than black flame ritual feels so awkward in pvp. like why would i ever cast this over black flame ritual when it takes twice as long to come out just for it to fly over the host's head and not hit them

For anyone wondering, this does NOT break Stance like Flames of the Redmane does.
- Anonymous
Maybe not the most damaging incantation but the cone goes surprisingly far that it's good to hit fidgety enemies at medium range.

According to the description, maliketh reduced the power of this (and all the other black flame spells) when he sealed the rune of death so it would be cool if those spells got a worse version of the max health reduction of the other destined death death weapons and spells after you beat him. It wouldn’t be too op since all of them already deal minor percentage damage so it would be a cool lore friendly buff that makes them all slightly better at finishing off enemies.

The vertical arc of this spell is still kind of dodgy when there are elevation differences between you and the enemy. It often misses enemies that are clearly in its range.
Still gonna use it cause when it works it's very effective.
Hopefully they'll manage to make it even better at some point.

Scouring Black Flame have very similiar animation to Flame of the Redmane, but does it stuns after 2 hits in a head as Redmane?

I gave brother Corhyn the godskin spellbook, but I still can't learn it, is there something else I have to do

As of 1.04 this spell uses less FP, have less recovery time, more range and wider AoE, and i feel like the arc is more horizontal now i can even shoot dogs fine with it… God Tier

After the 1.04 buffs, I was able to use this to quite good effect against malenia in my incantation-only run. Malenia kept dodging all my incantations, making me run out of mana before she died, and this was the solution. I could turn off target-lock and aim to the left side of malenia, causing her to "dodge" the cast and jump straight into the cone. Combining the fire-shrouding cracked tear, fire scorpion charm, golden vow, and godslayer's seal, I could easily hit 1500+ damage per cast.
- Anonymous
It is a lot better since the 1.04. Now reasonable for PVP catching people. While it does not chain cast, you can catch flame -> scouring black flame to grab people rolling away.
- Anonymous
It's super good as of 1.04. I suggest everyone gives it a second try.
- Anonymous
All they need to do is make it have a lower curve. Even with the buffs to the distance, it will never hit somebody unless you unlock your camera and attack at a very specific angle. Too much effort for not enough payoff.
- Anonymous
Yeah the weird upwards angle makes this useless in situations that it should shine in like dogs or hoards of the sub humans. I like the spell they just need to fix that bit. I have even had it miss soldiers because they crouch during certain attacks.
- Anonymous
I try to aim this spell slightly downward to compensate for its upward trajectory but it feels like theres this weird deadzone that makes it very difficult to aim at slight downward angles :/
- Anonymous
After 1.04, this now has absurdly long range even without charging, and even more with. It's now likely a go-to AOE spell for Faith builds.

So this sometimes seems to hit my favorite troll in Stormveil castle for testing purposes twice. Is there a specific way you need to angle this to get multiple hits from one cast? I cant ever seem to replicate it on purpose. The two proc damage isnt all that bad.
- Anonymous
If the fire spread out at a regular angle instead of above your lock-on target this incantation would be god-tier
- Anonymous
Black flame spells could use a buff, despite teh %hp aspect, I cant ever seem to get it to out damage other spells. I suppose its meant for lower faith builds.
- Anonymous
Decent spell, needs better tracking near the end of cast however.

I've actually found this to deal more damage than the black flame incantation. Black Flame, however, can interrupt heavy enemies and has longer range. Essentially if you're using both: Scouring Black Flame for AoE and dmg/Black Flame for Range and single target stagger. On the subject of it's hitbox, I find that it does have issues with elevation. Although most of the time I still land the incantation medium range and if you're building around spell casting you're going to 1-2 enemies with massive damage. So I feel like it's a small price to pay. Between these two spell you can definitely eliminate the risk of melee combat unless absolutely necessary (Which is where Black Blade comes in, but that's a discussion for another time.)
For building around black flame/scouring black flame spell casting, I recommend Flock's Canvas Talisman, Godfrey Icon, and Primal Glintstone blade(4th is preference). This will, fully charged, will easily deal over 1k per cast (The dot will do the rest.). A combination of black flame protection and healing incantations easily cover the Primal Glintstone blade weakness. I've been using this in endgame areas and have been destroying with black flame incantations. It definitely rivals blood and Intelligence builds.

Even if it isn't effective, it looks really ****ing cool.
Fashion is the true endgame.

This is really only good for clearing mobs. A fully charged black flame fireball hits harder. This does have a great fan shape for deali my with multiple enemies
- Anonymous
I've hit people with it. It hit's hard.
I'd rather have a godslayer version of catch flame.
- Anonymous
needing to unlock and aim downwards is annoying, but the flames lingering for a bit kinda make up for it and make this a perfectly mediocre and usable incant in kiting or pvp situations

Odd 'V' or gull-wing shaped spread. Does decent damage when it hits as far as I can tell. However, it easily flies over the heads of human-height enemies on either side of a group. Probably pretty effective on larger enemies/bosses (like dark hail from ds2) and maybe useful in situations when free aiming... but it's a bit too quirky to justify replacing Flame of Frenzy of whatever dragon breath I have up for a given area. Definitely earmarked for more testing after I finish my first story playthrough.

This curves upwards slightly. The best way to make it hits targets is to angle your camera slightly down and not lock on. This does not excuse how badly this spell is designed.
- Anonymous
i'm not sure what the use case for this is. if i am trying to attack a single target, i will just use black flame. if i am trying to fight multiple enemies at once, i'll use black flame ritual. the slow casting speed also doesn't do it any favours.
- Anonymous
The flames persist for maybe a second after casting, so it's possible to toss it at approaching enemies and let them walk into it
- Anonymous
Does great damage, but so rarely does it actually hit targets.
When it does, it can easily one shot things.
This thing doesn't hit targets very well, even if they're right in front of you. There are way better AoE spells out there.

Its deals More damag than black flame
i think is like 20% more
