Elder Dragon Greyoll is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat Greyoll easily, as well as boss stats and lore for Greyoll.

Elder Dragon Greyoll is a massive dragon, laying on the ground surrounded by five Lesser Dragons and is found in Caelid. When players encounter her, they will find her motionless and unable to attack.

This is an optional boss, but it is a popular one, as it can net players a large amount of Runes for the relative ease of killing her. There are two ways of defeating the boss. One is by killing all of the smaller dragons around her. Defeating each one takes off a portion of her health away from her, and defeating all five defeats this boss as well. Alternatively, you can avoid fighting all the smaller dragons and just chip away at her health by attacking her tail directly. It may take a while, but you get the same rewards no matter what method you choose to defeat her. Greyoll and her children drop five Dragon Hearts and unlock Greyoll's Roar for purchase when defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. They can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

Greyoll was the mother of all dragons, dwarfing all who stood before her like a looming mountain.

Elden Ring Elder Dragon Greyoll Boss

Elder Dragon Greyoll is a Field Boss found in Caelid

  • This boss is optional
  • Closest Site of Grace: Fort Faroth
  • Multiplayer is allowed for this boss
  • You can summon Spirit Ashes for this battle
  • Defeating Elder Dragon Greyoll unlocks Elder Dragon Greyoll's Roar at the  Cathedral of Dragon Communion
  • The 5 smaller dragons in front of her are her children. The death of each will deal around 20% of her maximum health her; therefore, killing all 5 dragons will leave her to be killed with a single hit.

Elder Dragon Greyoll Combat Information

  • Health: NG (87,664), NG+ (87,751), NG+2 (96,526), NG+3 (100,913), NG+4 (105,301), NG+5 (114,076), NG+6 (118,463), NG+7 (122,851)
  • Does not attack, but will instead roar to alert nearby dragons.
  • Lesser Dragons deal Standard Damage.
  • dragon icon 40px Dragon type
  • Can't be poise broken
  • Relatively weak to Pierce Damage
  • Resistant to other types of damages and all status effects.
  • Immune to Death Blight.
  • On NG, has 627 bleed resist initially, then 917 after the 1st proc, and 1,374 after the 2nd proc onward

Absorptions:

The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example if an absorption is 60. 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number= less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Elder Dragon Greyoll Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Elder Dragon Greyoll:

  • The easiest way to kill her is by going to her left side (from a player's perspective), and hit the tail with any weapon of your choice. Neither her, nor her children will fight back.
  • Armaments that inflict Hemorrhage or/and Frostbite are incredibly useful against Greyoll, as they do a percentage of HP, and as it can proc relatively fast. It is possible to kill Greyoll from a very low level with this method.
  • Before going to eliminate this boss, it is recommended to get at least one Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot (consume shortly before killing the dragon) and the Golden Scarab, found by beating the boss of the Abandoned Cave
  • Stay in behind Greyoll, near the wings and the legs to avoid aggroing any dragons or falling victim to nasty attacks. She can be easily cheesed with this method.
  • When you first ascend using the Spirit Spring directly north of Church of the Plague, run directly towards Greyroll's head and summon any spirit ash (preferably a tanky one) to draw the attention of the smaller dragons. She will alert the nearby dragons who will walk towards her head. After, try to ignore as many as you can and head straight towards the right side of her tail (if looking directly at Greyroll from the front, otherwise it would be the left side of her tail if looking at her from the back), at which point you should be able to freely attack Greyroll without drawing the attention of the smaller dragons. They may investigate if they were still aggro'd on you from before, but like unlike regular dragons these do not fly around so they are easy to lose aggro on. From this spot you should be able to attack her without any interference, since she relies completely on the smaller dragons for defense and does not attack the player.
Melee Users

Add Bloody Slash to a simple Longsword, the Blood Loss will help kill it faster. Any other Bleed attacks will speed up the attack process. Kill the small dragons in the area that appear when it roars and it will also deplete its health. Clearing them will fnish off Greyoll without actually having to face her. Likewise, clearing Greyoll herself will clear all the smaller dragons, and this is quicker. These smaller dragons move very slowly and are easy to run underneath most of the time to throw in some hits without taking damage. If you prefer, go ahead and approach Greyoll herself and throw in as many hits as you can until her HP bar depletes.

Magic and Ranged Users

You don't need a fancy weapon. Simply add Bloody Slash  basic dagger and it will do just fine. As a ranged player, this will be a easy encounter due to their slow movement. They don't run at you and your main concern may be its lunge attacks that is still very slow and easy to predict. The time before its lunge attack while in the air is also a great opportunity to deal any ranged attacks. Continue this until all dragons are cleared then Greyoll will turn to ash.

Alternatively, if the player has no such weapon, instead of getting it he may try to kill lesser dragons with Rock Sling (while using Meteorite Staff). Headshots with rocks can deal quite a damage and poise-break them.

Any Faith build can use Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike to cause large amounts of damage to Dragon enemies. With 70 Faith, one or two casts can kill multiple of her Dragon offspring simultaneously.

Elder Dragon Greyoll Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Greyoll's Roar This is Greyoll's only tactic, which will debilitate your stats and awaken the smaller dragons around her. You will be facing the smaller dragons instead. Killing one will deplete her health significantly. Clear the smaller dragons. Their Attacks will be found below.
Smaller Dragon
Stomp The dragon lifts one foot and stomps down, creating a shockwave. You can watch as the dragon lifts its foot in preparation for this attack.
Wing Attack The dragon lifts one of its wings and smashes it into the ground in front of it. When it lifts a single wing, stay clear of that side.
Lunge Done after flying. The dragon flies into the air and lunges down during their landing.   Remain out of any area it will potentially land on. You'll notice it flying and begin to target you. This is when you should back away.
Tail Lash The dragon repositions to face you, whipping its tail around in an arc. This attack is triggered by being behind it. When you see the tail lift and curl to one side, step away.
Bite The dragon leans its head to one side, screeching, before snapping quickly in an arc in front of it. This attack is triggered by being in front of it. When you see its head wind up for a bite, step away or under the dragon.
Charge After a scream, the dragon takes a few steps forward and attacks head-first. After it screams, either dodge closer between its legs or stay away. The dragon can move quite a bit forward, so be warry of midrange.

Elder Dragon Greyoll Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • When measured from head to tail, Greyoll is currently the second largest dragon in FromSoftware history, beating out the Dragon God from Demon’s Souls and the Divine Dragon from Sekiro.
She is beaten out by Gransax, the giant Dragon corpse in the Royal Capital.
  • Due to her reusing the same model, Greyoll can be made to perform animations and attacks of other dragons, but this will lead to framerate issues and crashes due to inability of Elden Ring's game engine to handle the dragon's size.
  • After killing Greyoll, player will additionally receive around ~20,000 extra Runes, as the smaller Dragons surrounding Greyoll will die along with it.

Why are people so ashamed of killing her? She's suffering from the scarlet rot. You're essentially euthanising a terminally ill patient.

      • Anonymous

honestly, they really missed the chance to be able to summon a younger version of Greyoll as a boss somewhere, something as large as our dragon lord placy. Would be funny if she was peaceful, but If you killed her old version she'd attack you.

        • Anonymous

The only reason that you want to get runes by killing her rather than shooting birds is that you have trouble getting the first great rune. But it's better to upgrade your weapons than to level up in order to defeat godrick. You can get a +4 special weapon assisted by the big white guy of Ranni or get some smith's stones from caves.

          • I just killed her by hunting her children down one at a time. I feel dirty...

Also, there appears to be 6 dragons connected to her, not just five, although killing five will do all of her health (maybe slightly less since I think a couple stray shots hit Greyoll)

            • Anonymous

I see people talking about how it feels bad to kill ther, from an RP perspective that is. From that point of few I would say I'd kill her even more than for runes. She is rotting away slowy and can do nothing about it.

Here is my setup for an (infinite) early game boost: I start by acquiring some gold fowl foot. One is found in Limgrave, and ypu can buy some from patches too. Then, you rush to Caelid, and go to the Isolated Shack and buy the Spiked Caestus from the merchant. (Probably the earliest, most effective bleed weapon that almost any starting class can wield). At this point, you can go and kill her if you want, but if you wanna further cheese, here is the optional setup: After acquiring the items above, go find the Abandoned Cave in caelid. If you are good, you can get to the boss safely, and you can cheese the Haligtree Knights with a spirit ash that has multiple units. The boss gives you the Gond Scarab talisman that you can use to further boost the souls you get, BUT WAIT, THERE IS MORE in the abandoned cave you also find the Venomous Fang claw weapon that inflicta poison damage, and again, can be wielded by probably every starting class.

To kill the dragon, you wanna just whack her leg, until about 5-6 blood losses (not sure how many tbh), you will know when to stop, because it will have too little HP left for another blood loss. Now, you switch to Venonous Fangs, and apply Poison. Once the poison is applied, you get on torrent and rush to the Grace, where you wait until it dies. DONT WAIT FOR THE SOUND CUE, OR THE SOULS! As soon as you see the HP bar vanish and the dragon ******es a bit, you know its dead. Rest at the grace, and you will see that you get all tue souls, but the dragon is still there. You can repeat it as many times you want.

If I'm gonna give myself a rune boost on a NG I'd rather do the Dragonbarrow Night Cavalry cheese. Doesnt feel right to kill her,

                  • Anonymous

“The boss is optional.” That’s all I need to know, so I’m leaving her in peace along with her children just trying to defend her.

In celebration of the complete disappearance of balance these games used to have, I like to start my playthroughts by getting something with bleed, putting this dragon out of her misery and spending EVERY. SINGLE. RUNE. in leveling vigor. Pinwheel was more challenging than this and the juicy reward didn't felt like cheating at all, heh

                      • Anonymous

What was the point? I understand the game chugged if she was upright and walking around but seriously what the **** were they thinking? Should've made her have a rot aura when you get too close. Even then the souls you get are miniscule in comparison to the fight you were supposed to do, it's like they were begging players to swiss cheese this boss.

                        • Anonymous

You can lock onto her head. This saved me the effort that I would've spent on killing her on my bow only playthrough, I just used Rain of Arrows with poison/rot arrows and she got melted, so I didn't have to fight smaller dragons or waste all my ammunition. Gotta like how devs still give you the opportunity to kill a gimmick miniboss in the normal way, but I honestly think she should be immune to status effects, or at least bleed/frost should deal small, flat amount of damage instead of 13k. Her being so cheesy is just wrong

                          • Anonymous

There are six smaller dragons:one directly under left wing, one slightly further, three directly near the maw and another one near right wing;killing 5 in any order kills the boss and the remaining one.

Imagine being the mother of an entire generation of dragons, being feared by all, only for you to be disabled by an incurable disease and used as an early game rune station by some asshat Tarnished with a bleed weapon.

Fast way to kill her early game is to use a morning star with Wild Strikes applied, and buff it with blood grease for extra blood loss buildup. You'll want to head to Fort Haight for the Dectus half anyways, so you may as well craft some blood grease along the way. Swap all your flasks over to blues and spam wild strikes until dead. You'll need ~4 greases throughout the process if you want full uptime on the blood loss buff, so make sure to grab sufficient resin and Bloodflowers

Me and a friend walked up to this boss during co op, saw the grace and went to go activate it. Upon doing so the boss just died instantly for no reason.

Does anyone know what the fastest way to kill Greyoll is? With my current build, I have the minimum required stats to wield the Godskin Peeler with Black Flame Tornado, the Carian Filigreed Crest, Green Turtle Talismans, and enough stats to use Rotten Breath. With that set up, I can use BFT 7 times and each use does around 11,000 points of damage (the GP is unupgraded) and then I finish it off with Rotten Breath for the proc and go back to the site of grace to wait for the trigger that way I can do the respawn glitch. So, is there a faster way or is this kind of the best case scenario?

rush back to the grace (ON TORRENT) if you want it to respawn after killing it.. won't get the dragon hearts but you'll have another chance to kill it :)

there iss a bug that hhappened to me in abandoned cave that if you wait long enough, Greyoll will die by it's own

Boss can be farmed endlessly on Xbox, PS, and PC. However, on Xbox, as you cannot directly back up save data like you can on PS and PC, if you make an error doing the glitch you are screwed. Unless you immediately cut the power or are not connected to the internet and have a prior cloud save, which requires going through a large drawn out process. This glitch is really good as you can net 50-70k souls per kill very early game, allowing you to quickly build multiple characters. You can easily reach meta level in a few hours. Which I found very useful in determining what kind of build I wanted to make as my main character in this massive adventure. But you should then restart the game if you plan on any online play because: ******NOTE: Doing this early can of course give you an advantage in PvE, but over leveling early game can make PvP insanely hard to impossible, as you will only have beginner gear and will be matched against players with fully upgraded weapons and end game gear and abilities. It will also make you pretty useless as a coop summons for these same facts. So this provides NO ADVANTAGE WHATSOEVER for online play, rather the exact opposite. But I thought I would mention it, as it can be very useful in saving your valuable time to find the playstyle that best suits you before embarking. Amazing game.

On coop mod I just had Greyroll stand up, turn 180, and chomp one-shot both of us hitting her back left leg. I’ve never been so flabbergasted. So fair warning that big mommy may be fake stuck.

                                            • Anonymous

Just killed Greyoll in NG+ with a bleed weapon (Lordsworn Sword w/ Wild Strikes bleed) on her hind leg. Had Golden Scarab equipped, and right before killing her activated a golden fowl foot. She died, and I saw about 240000 runes enter my inventory, but then crashed to desktop and when I got back I had only received 156000 for the kill. No idea of the cause so others beware.

                                              • for the sake of curiosity, i was wondering how long it would take to emerge from Cave of Knowledge as a hero class and head to Elder Dragon Greyoll to get an assumed easy 75k souls. holy cow, what a grind... so on the way over i stopped at gatefront ruins for the Lordsworn's Greatsword, ran past the dragon spawning in at the lake for some quick souls from the downed hollows, leveled up dex 1 point to meet min req for sword, stopped by fort gael to grab the Starscourge Heirloom for a quick boost in strength, then ran over to Fort Faroth to set up.

so i 2 handed the sword, ran over and just started whacking her leg. and at starter stats, it took me 44 minutes and 39 seconds to fell the beast. of course this is all for the sake of experimentation, but it would have taken, what, 4 minutes to get 75k souls chasing the boulder at lenne's rise. if you are going to do this, really the only feasible path is starting out as a bandit, immediately getting reduvia, then hemorrhaging the dragon to death. with reduvia you can beat her pretty quickly just hammering bleed procs. and especially if you dual wield with the starter dagger and just keep spamming l1, her hp drops super fast.

that being said, with the souls i was able to raise my stats up to vgr20 / end14 / str31 / dex12 so at least now i can 1-hand the greatsword. at the very start of the game. now to go get 1 shot by margit since my hp is like nothing... :)

                                                • Anonymous

You can farm her very safely by bleeding her repeatedly and use rotten breath when the health is already at a quarter or less. After rot is applied you can run back to the grace. As soon as her dead animation starts you can sit down at the grace. I would sit down the instant her body moves. (Happens before the health bar even disappears)
That way you have a lot of tolerance (at least 3 seconds probably more) to not mess the timing up.

if you excel at ranged combat, the thing about her kids is that they are not equipped for ranged combat..You can kill one of her kids for about 3,000 runes a piece and rest, You can rinse and repeat this infinitely for unlimited runes.. She is worth what about 50,000? if you are up for it, you can get 6,000 off of two her kids, and do that 9 times you get 54,000 runes, which is more than you can get from her, but since they will respawn, it can be repeated as many times as desired.. Torrent gives you a mobility advantage, and best of all, you can float the fight over to the area that is close to the site of grace in case you die for easy runes retrieval.. You can let the old feeble girl rot in peace, just don't kill all of her offspring and you will be fine..

You can farm her easily without cheats, simply start at Fort Faroth grace and hit her tail with a bleed weapon, get on torrent and perform the last few hits, AS SOON as the dying animation starts you run back to the grace and rest. This will get you the runes AND she will respawn.

If you get the hearts you were too slow and she won't respawn.

6 bleed procs and one poison proc to finish her off. no fuss, no panic running back to the grace. Do not improve the weapons that you are using past about 5 or 6 or you will do too much damage between the procs.

Just grab any bleed weapon that you can use and poison mist from the swamp bug to throw on anything.

With Lordsworn for both, it takes around 14 hits to proc bleed and 6 to proc poison. Poison does around 4000 damage to Greyoll. You should have around 2000hp to get back to the grace, or about 30s

I don't understand how, but my girlfriend and I had just finished getting the Bull-Goat's Talisman and upon leaving and going back to the grace we randomly got 70,000 runes and 5 dragon hearts. We went up to investigate if Greyoll was there, but she was nowhere to be found... We.. don't understand how this happened but we'll take it.

The base drop, with the 5 minor dragons, would be 134,700, with just the scarab it would be 161,640, with the Gold Pickled 175,110, and with both 210,132. I've miscalculated something? Because I even have it clipped, because I wanted to bring more data about rune drops for the page (unti noticed that this is the first go to ATM on the Lands Between).

It is actually a little too affective so if you want to farm her use it with care. One full charge of the ash of war was enough to deal 20K damage while under the buffs of (flaming-shrouding cracked tear and flame grant me strength). Bloodloss is like 13k and you can't buff it.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I had this for a while, thankfully I kind of died when trying to kill 3rd dragon, so I just went, took back my lost runes, and kept on killing and piling up runes, and while trying I do get killed, so runes just keep on piling up until I killed all of the half HP dragons around, at least those were all I saw, and hit the big one out of curiosity, and it died from one hit...and all the farmland was gone.

So heads up for anyone who happens to stumble here before, or just arriving at the location, and reading this.
