Esgar, Priest of Blood is a Boss in Elden Ring. Esgar, Priest of Blood is a highly aggressive humanoid boss equipped with a dagger and utilizes bleed attacks and spells. He is accompanied by two dogs that also inflict bleed. Esgar can be found in the Leyndell Catacombs, deep beneath Leyndell, Royal Capital. This is an optional boss as players don't have to defeat it to advance in Elden Ring, but will be rewarded with useful items and Runes for doing so.

Aided by his two ferocious dogs, this Priest is capable of the deadliest hemorrhage-inducing attacks.

Esgar, Priest of Blood can be found in Leyndell Catacombs, which is a massive mausoleum found deep beneath Leyndell, Royal Capital. These catacombs are accessed through the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. Esgar's boss door can be found just in front of the Leyndell Catacombs site of grace near the entrance. However, you will need to venture deeper into the catacombs to unlock it.

Even after Leyndell, Royal Capital becomes Leyndell, Ashen Capital, the sewers are not affected and thus Esgar can still be fought.

Esgar, Priest of Blood Combat Information

Absorptions:

The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example if an absorption is 60. 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number= less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Esgar, Priest of Blood Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Esgar, Priest of Blood:

  • Use items that boost your Robustness such as Invigorating Cured Meat to slow the build-up of bleed effects.
  • Esgar is a human-type enemy, therefore bring weaponry inflicting Status Effects.
  • Focus on the two dogs first before moving onto the boss.  Players having trouble with the dogs can try using the Beast-Repellent Torch.
  • Consider using a summon to distract the boss and/or one of the dogs.

General Strategy

Esgar is a relatively simple boss that relies heavily on the bleed mechanic applied by both himself and his dogs. It is imperative that you do not let this effect build up as the blood loss triggered can one-shot players even at higher levels. Consider using a summon to distract either the boss or one of the dogs for an easier time. You should aim for the boss only after taking care of his canine companions, as they are much quicker and also inflict bleed. The dogs do not take too much to kill but getting hit by them can prove dangerous due to the bleed.

Esgar himself will mostly try to close the distance with dodge rolls and jump attacks. His weapon automatically builds up bleed on hit but he does not have any complex or extensive combos. After dodging his jump attacks, you can punish him with heavy jump attacks of your own to send him plopping facedown on the ground. When he casts his Swarm of Flies move, get ready to dodge through the slow-moving initial swarm. A direct hit from this will cause a burst that quickly builds bleed. Another attack Esgar will use commonly is the Bloodflame Talons. This attack has a very obvious telegraph and the higher damage portion only happens after a short delay.

Melee Users

For melee users, you can use any weapon you want, this boss does not have a lot of poise and you can stagger and stunlock him easily. You just have to be careful with its attacks as it stacks bleed and can build-up quite quickly, and being on the receiving end of his attacks can mean life or death if you're not careful. Take your time in getting a few hits in with him, use the whole arena and kite him when needed, take advantage of the pillars in the area to block or hide from some of his attacks, like the swarm of flies, then flask up when needed. You can get a few attacks in after his jumping attack, just don't get too greedy as he can use Swarm of Flies or the Bloodflame Talons, which can deal massive burst damage on impact.

Magic and Ranged Users

For magic and ranged users, it is recommended that you use a spell/incantations or a skill that can deal AoE damage at the start of the fight where you can clip Esgar as well as his canine companions. Then you can equip a heavy-hitting spell/incantation of your choice in whittling down his health if you've managed to take out the canine companions. Esgar can rush towards you if you keep on creating distance, or he can use some of his projectile attacks, either way, just keep kiting him while using your ranged attacks and take advantage of the pillars in the area.

For Incantation users - Ekzykes's Decay with around 30-35 Mind is a free win, as both dogs and Esgar will not have a chance to retaliate/jump away.

Esgar, Priest of Blood Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Swarm of Flies Esgar releases a swarm of flies that fly towards his target, bursting into a larger AoE that deals damage and builds up bleed. Dodge through the initial projectile. It has decent tracking and will likely hit if you dodge backwards or sideways.
Bloodflame Talons Esgar slashes with magical claws in front of him. After a short delay, an explosion is released from the claw marks. Maintain distance and do not close in until the explosion happens.
Bloody Slash Uses the dagger to unleash a rending blood slash in a wide arc. Dodge roll through or either side of the projectile.
Jumping Attack Runs forward and performs a jumping attack with the dagger. Dodge roll through the attack, and you can get a 1-3 swings in depending on your weapon.

Esgar, Priest of Blood Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Voice Actor: ??
  • Considering his obvious blood associations and the fact that he drops Lord of Blood's Exultation, Esgar is almost certainly a servant of Mohg. What exactly he's doing in the catacombs is unclear - possibly he has been sent there to retrieve Mohg's Shackle, which is found nearby the catacombs' entrance.
  • Possible refference to Titchy Gren from Dark Souls 2, or more precisely, Nahr Alma, the God of Blood.

This complete joke of a boss turns into an absolute nightmare in RL1 +0, holy ****. Probably the highest jump in difficulty in the entire game.

I only found the entrance to this dudes entire area while I was omw to endgame in the Ashen capital so he kinda stood no chance

For those of you running really high dex, fun trick: Perfumer's Talisman, Spark Aromatic while they run up to you. He doesn't know how to evade it. Killed both dogs and chunked him badly in one splash, starting the fight off poised for an easy win.

I am confident the rune value on this page needs updating. Saw 2 videos from this month showing the boss dropped 30000 runes and 1 video from 8 months ago showing the boss dropping 26000 Runes.
Trying to fill in the missing names for each boss on my dsmapstudio params, was confused on why I didn't see 22500 runes.

NPCs can't see Night sorceries (Night Shard + Night Comet), so won't dodge out of the way of them. Using these spells, a high enough INT w/ upgraded staff will chew through 3511hp before he has time to even do anything in return.

Dropped greatshielder ashes then spewed rotten breath when the dogs got close, fight literally lasted like 4 seconds. The greatshielders pinned him between them and he went down.

never mind, the torch made no difference, I summoned the wolves and between them and bloodflame blade esgar was trivial. right from when I first started playing elden ring I can't get the right balance between a fun boss fight, a spirit summons making the boss a triviality or banging my head against a wall dying over and over.

I've just found the lever and I'm ready to try the boss, I just need to know how the beast repellent torch works, by that I mean do I have to have it in my left hand until the dogs are dead? have it on my back while two handing a weapon? or just have it in an equipment slot to get the passive effect?

Blasphemous blade killed his two dogs and staggered him with it's weapon art. He didn't last much longer after that...

Arcane/Dexterity build with dragon spells. Start with Greyoll's Roar to demolish the dogs and knock the boss down, proceed to rush him with dual blood scimitars or Dragonmaw. Died really fast with Dragon Communion Seal +9 and 28 FTH + 50 ARC.

I don't know if this has happened to anyone but the boss died while I was going down the elevator that unlocks the shortcut.
I didn't even open the door that leads to it. It gave me the talisman and the 30k runes.

Tip for INT builds and magic users, Star Shower destroys him and basically every NPC invader and NPC enemy like him. Since they expertly dodge incoming sorceries, they'll try to dodge it but still get hit by the extra projectiles. Stars of Ruin will also work, but Shower is much cheaper

Bleed dogs are fixed now but still very dangerous, if you are having trouble with this fight, the greatshield spirits from nokron are a hard counter - spirits can't be bled, and his feeble knife and pathetic dogs just bounce fight off glorious nokron steel.
Summon shield bros and then sit back and laugh as he is staggered into oblivion

Frenzied Burst (using the Dragon Communion Seal and 58 arcane) instantly deletes this guy. Just snipe him from the entrance.

Frenzied burst with Dragon Communion Seal and high arcane one shots this guy, even in co op with 2 phantoms. Just snipe him immediately and win, GG.

                                        • Just want to let everyone having a hard time with this boss (yes imo it feels like the Capra Demon fight all over again...due to the delay and such when entering the room), I would highly suggest using the Fanged Imp Ashes as your summon. Was 112 when I fought Esgar, Fanged Imps were at +5. I then proceeded to move to pick off enemies one at a time (of course dogs 1st). - iS1!

If you go back to the Ashen Capital from the Forgotten Lands bonfire, you'll find a large open area with three Ulcerated Tree Spirits (two of them are hiding underground) and at the very end of it, the Erdtree's Favor+2 talisman. You do not have to kill the tree spirits to get the emblem, and can simply rush or sneak through.

After spending some time killing all three Ulcerated Tree Spirits without reloading the area, and then coming back after sitting at a grace, I can confirm that not only does killing all three of them not give you any reward (other than runes, which is granted a fair amount, albeit I didn't count the amount per Ulcerated Tree Spirit.)

                                            But they also Respawn.

It seems like they're treated as "Normal Enemies," and as such unless you're really confident and want those runes it's better off to run or sneak past to grab the talisman.

There's a slim chance these tree spirits have some sort of random drop pool, but I didn't get anything from them at all, and currently don't feel like farming Ulcerated Tree Spirits to find out if they drop anything.

I am so confused right now. I keep going back to the room where he's supposed to be, but there's just two omens there, this guy is nowhere to be found, and I can't find any mention of anyone else having this problem.

                                              • Anonymous

The dogs are definitely bugged; good ol’ Zullie put out a video on the small bleed dogs. Apparently the game processes a hit every frame that you’re in the dogs hitbox, instead of cancelling further damage from the hitbox that has already hit you once, as the game conventionally does with other enemies. So you get a metric crap ton of damage from one single bite. Hopefully I summarised the video accurately, I’m not a techie haha… if anyone’s interested, search up “What’s wrong with the bleed dogs” by Zullie the Witch (I dunno if posting links are allowed)… fascinating stuff really

Casting Unseen Form makes only Esgar run at you initially. Activate any buffs you have and finish him before spell ends. Dogs will despawn once he is gone

                                                  • Anonymous

Since he’s a human NPC, he can be affected by Madness which deals a lot of damage and also stuns him. Use AoE or summons to handle his dogs then beat the crap out of the scrub.

Funnily, he can get one-shot in co-op.

Do not use Mimic Tear. It will get shredded by the bleed effect from both Swarm and the dogs if it tries face tanking for you. If you do use Mimic Tear, AoE the dogs down first so you can gang up on the discount blood lord.

Easiest method I could find is that Adula's Moonblade has a wide enough arc to hit all three on entry to the arena. 2 or 3 Adula's killed the doggos and took a good chunk off Esgars HP. Understandably, the fight is a lot easier once Esgar is on his own.

                                                                        • Anonymous

I think the dogs in this fight are bugged. I used a greatshield with 68 stability + barricade shield active, and one of the dogs drained all my stamina in a split second and then oneshot me with a single attack. I could hear like 30 hits landing like rapid fire on my shield.

                                                                          • Anonymous

The boss AI just wants to dodge everything. Summon the 2 skellys with double bows and he never even attacks. Funniest boss fight yet

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

This boss and his two dogs are entirely built around the bleed they apply. The blood loss one-shot me from full hp at 53 vigor and medium armour - and the dogs have a heavy attack of some sort that can guard-break you through a shield (although it seems rarely used and easy to dodge - they usually do light attacks into shields and get stuned like other dogs). The boss can-and-will riposte, but the blood loss would kill you anyway.

The dogs have low hp, I was able to buff my sword and two shot them while my summons briefly distracted the boss. The boss and enemies themselves were fairly weak with predictable attacks and low hp, and if you manage to avoid the blood loss before you finish off the dogs you shouldn't have any trouble - especially if your ash summons are still alive.
